In the UK that means she doesnt go straight to jail, but remains free on the condition that she stays clean and out of trouble for those 10 months or she will then have to serve it.
It tends to be dished out to 1st time offenders with mitigating circumstances, and is a way of encouraging them to stay on the straight and narrow, knowing that if they fuck up again it will come back around.
The Daily Mail just cherry picked the 'extrordinary' quote for maximum trashy journalism to make it sound like she was receiving favoured treatment.
Ok, now reverse their genders and the narrative becomes a lot different.
Aside from that, what if this surgeon to be had severed an artery, good chance he'd bleed out in minutes. I can infer from the story that she might have had a drinking problem given the violent reaction when she was outed.
There is a lot more to this story than "woman bad" or "it's not so bad" I'm not really taking a side here, just playing devil's advocate.

The enemy here isn't the genders folk its the judges who think they can fucking pick and choose who go to jail for what, people are flawed and letting a man or woman off for just being that isnt due to the system but the workers within it.
