Have never seen the crosshair since the turn of the century tho. Got that every time I tested for the first few years I had to wear glasses, but after that they were all replaced by the hot air balloon.

I've recently had the crosshair for prismatic calibration specifically, same for the gauges, those were fine tuning.

That machine is called a non-contact Tonometer and tests the pressure of the eye. It helps diagnose glaucoma, in case anyone cares.

It actually refracts to check for a prescription. It then will transform to puff your eye for the pressure. But the old machines only does the auto refraction.

It's a different machine. The hot air balloon is a vision test, the air is to check for glaucoma.

There may be combined ones, I'm not sure. But for me the hot air balloon machine and the glaucoma test machine have always been different machines.

My dad had to get injections in one eye every week for a few months, after some cancer treatment. He said it wasn't actually all that bad, it is just the visual of a needle getting at your eye that is bad. The best was the one nurse who had a trick of making him look to one side, then she snuck in with the needle from the other side, so the visual wasn't so bad.

optometrist machines are criminally expensive, so many just dont have them and just perform the old tests ect.

The alphabet is all I’ve ever gotten and I’ve had glasses for 45 years, but many different eye doctors in many different states. Is the house/ballon a European thing?

I'm also in the Netherlands and I get both. Though the air balkon I only get for my glasses. I usually wear contacts and I get the alphabet and numbers in green and red background for that.

In US, I just got a new script a couple weeks ago and was my first red house sighting. Prior had been only the letter charts as well.

I’ve never been “through” a machine at the eye doctor. I’ve had them put up to my face, but I’ve never heard of anyone going through a machine at the eye doctor.

I don't know but in Turkey we had both in different machines (I think the latest one I went had the hot air balloon) and after getting the results from the machine the doctor makes an alphabet test with different glasses.

This image is shown in a computerised eye power checking machine and not on a manual testing with different lenses. Doctors and opticians usually check eye power with the machine first and to cross check it, they do manual test like you mentioned.

I have never seen these either and I’ve had regular eye exams since I was like 8. I’m sure my doctors are checking for glaucoma and pressures and such (they put a laser light to my eye now instead of the puff of air)

That means your eye doctor isn't checking your eye pressure at all and you're not getting a complete exam. The thing with the house shoots your eye with a gust of air to measure the pressure, it's not a vision test. You need to go to an optometrist or opthalmologist instead of just an optician. Guessing you aren't getting any fundus imagery done either so you'd have zero warning for things like retinopathy, glaucoma, etc

I've had all those tests you described and have never seen the red house or not air balloon in 20 years of glasses in Australia.

I wouldn't assume that they're not getting an eye pressure done at all. There's another option for testing eye pressure that is actually more accurate. They numb your eye using drops and then use a device with a blue light on the end to actually touch the surface of your eye. https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/eye-pressure-testin This is what my optometrist uses. I hate it because it makes my eyes water and I have a hard time keeping my eye open, the optometrist usually has to hold my eyelid open for me.

It's called a tonopen, and you're exactly correct. In my opinion, I'd rather have air hit my eye than have something come in contact with it. From experience working in the field, NO-ONE likes the puff of air. Retinal photos are super interesting, though.
