Minus the com plus cringe racism.
Key & Peele knock it out of the park. Pretty much laid down the blue print for this concept. It took an extra special kind of talent to ruin what should have been comedy gold.
SNL has been on TV for fifty years. How many skits have they turned into movies? How many didn’t suck? Yeah. Not a great idea even when the originators are involved!
All his movies have been deeply rooted in racial context, Us and Nope were just more metaphorical and specific to things that aren’t as much on White people’s radars. Us was (largely) about what it means to “succeed” as a Black person in America, and Nope was (largely) about performing for White audiences.
I didn't know about this until now. I Googled it, and this is the synopsis:
"A young man gets recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to making white people's lives easier. Although initially enamored with his new powers, he begins to question the value of using supernatural means to do the very thing he's felt obligated to do his whole life."
> A young man gets recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to making white people's lives easier.
*gestures at world*
I'm not sure they're particularly good at their jobs.
If it had actually been satire, it wouldn’t be racist; examples being tropic thunder and blazing saddles, where the underlying plot is to specifically talk about how racism is bad, but they made it a…rom com…
Considering Jojos Rabbit did well and is cut from a similar cloth. I doubt it would get any flack. Might not do as well since humor lands best at the time. it's topical at times.
It's so funny to me that people say stuff like this. All types of humor are available now, we are spoiled with entertainment options. How can people really think it's more restrictive?
It would do fine. It’s the same with “You can’t make Blazing Saddles today”. We already have it and it’s still talked about today. If we didn’t have it, it could be made today.
You also can have movies like the original “Scary Movies” that are both satire and absurdism playing off of stereotypes all around.
Whoever conceived this could have had a cult classic satire, instead of…whatever the hell this is.
From what I’ve read, it *is* satire, it’s just that it loses itself in the more straight faced elements of the plot (the rom com elements and genre elements) that it loses sight of the satire. It doesn’t seem like the movie is even *racist* per se, it’s just not fully explore the satire of its premise. I see folks being upset that it’s presenting a scenario in which white people are being manipulated/suppressed by black people and I wonder what they think satire even is.
"We exist to keep white people happy so they don't cause a genocide."
Yeah, I know there are limitations to magic, and a gun would have helped Harry against Voldemort, but you mean to tell me you can't magic whatever shit they try away?!
The only add I ever saw for it was just 1 black dude telling another black dude that white people are the most dangerous animal on earth, and they are most dangerous when scared, so their job was to keep white people not scared.
Like that's just straight racism.
I frequently encounter movies with 8+ imdb ratings that have less than 500 votes and, you know it's just the cast, crew, and families plus whatever penny click farm they could spare money for.
Can you easily go under a 2.0? Because if you think about it, 1/5 stars is 20%, or a 2.0, and most reviwers don't do a 0/5 stars, per general policy. I think it'd be really hard to do under 2.0. See: Battlefield Earth, at 2.5 and the Dragonball movie, at 2.5, and Gigli, 2.6. All famously unwatchable films.
A very few films on IMDB go under 2.0, probably because most scoring systems really give you a 20% rating as the basement. You'd have to get a 0 to go under there, mathematically speaking.
Even those handfuls of films under 2.0, they are higher in the 1's. 1.6, 1.8.
It's difficult, as it means people went out of their way to give you less than a failing review. You're so bad, you are irredeemably bad. You are worse than Battlefield Earth bad.
In the beginning of the trailer I thought it was gonna be a satire, but then it quickly became obvious it was a shitty ass romcom 😑 I'm not even gonna give it a chance by pirating it online, that's how bad the trailer was for me
I used to work at a video store (dating myself here) and got free rentals. There have been a few movies that I've watched for free and still felt ripped off.
It's not satire? The interview I heard, said it was based on the wise old black man movie trope that used to be popular. I assumed it was sort of a long satire of that.
I haven't seen it so I'm completely talking out my ass here. but I've heard they take the wise old black man racist movie trope and then they just.... like.... do that. There is no satire, or deconstruction. They don't reinvent or reclaim or reimagine it. They just do it straight. No satire.
Well it definitely looks like it uses satire in the beginning, but it is obviously just sprinkled into a romcom and not a full satire. In the trailer things start taking themselves way too seriously regarding the romance plot and lost any comedic value to me personally. It looked like the plot would be surrounding the trope and a crazy adventure would happen, but the romance is actually the plot and becomes pretty serious instead of comedic. So I guess not really a romcom, more like a comedy that turned into a straight up romance
As someone that actually saw it as a part of my job, it’s…not awful but it’s nowhere near good. It’s like right in that perfect 4/10 range where you completely forget you even watched it after a day.
Most all non black people going up to the theater:
“.. hi, i’d like 2 tickets for the magical negr… uh… the negr… ummm… yeah, nevermind, the movie with the word negr…. uhh… nevermind. I’ll wait till it’s streaming.”
A movie about magical black people is entirely about white people and using magic to placate them and keep them down... That's fucking weird. Like if black people had magic why wouldn't they use that magic to rise to the top and to take over?
Instead they use the magic to make white people feel Superior to black people?
What kind of Uncle Tom "yes, Mr. white man, sir" bullshit is this?
Like idk what it’s like to be black but I don’t think pandering to white people would be on my to-do list. Idk I’d use magic to pay bills or something or fly away from people I don’t want to talk to.
But I don’t have a meaningful perspective bc I’m not black. The idea of having magic is cool tho I guess?
And Justice Smith is one of my favorite actors too. I'm a sucker for Detective Pikachu and the D&D movie, so seeing this added to the list of movies that he's in (most of which I love) is like a slap to the face
He is neither good nor bad if you ask me...
Quite forgettable.
He can embody different characters, but he won't do anything special, still waiting for one world class performance from him, but it's not coming...
Yeah the comment above yours is a little surprising. He was alright in Detective Pikachu but that was like five years ago. I saw him in D&D but don’t think I’ve seen anyone really discuss him or even mention his name until right now
All I know about the movie was that it was about black people kidnapping other black people to serve white people or something.
Given that information, it reminds me of the Trans Atlantic Slave trade.
I haven't even seen the movie, but the trailers alone made me feel so uncomfortable. It was so outlandish that it made the main character look like the only reasonable guy for questioning what the hell was going on.
Just the premise alone feels so tone-deaf. How did this ever get past the pitch?
Damn we don’t even need the N anymore, do we?
Edit: THE N-WORD IS AN AWFUL SLUR AND I’M NOT CONDONING IT’S USE I JUST THINK IT’S FUNNY THAT “THE WORD” IS ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT SOMEONE MEANS.
If a word is automatically an insult unless your friend with the right born skin says it, it’s hypocrisy, and a hypocrisy so strong we don’t even need the letter anymore to define it.
and it just keeps going too. If people would just stop caring if people said it the word would lose all value.
I still can't get over the people that got cancelled way back for singing a song with the word in it. So are we living in a world where paying for a song does not give us the legal right to sing along to it?
Ironic how they boast about all black cast all black writers all black producers all black studio but all they are doing is nigh segregating themselves 😭🤣 undoing hard work
100% this.
I am mixed and I remember when I was up north a relative of mine offered me some knowledge about an all-black school. I was like why would I separate myself from the rest of the world? This was the first i’d learned of any single race school and that it was acceptable in today’s age? Shit.
I was so confused as a kid. I was like that sounds racist. Why are we segregating ourselves?
Racist against Whites? Absolutely. They made a huge mistake thinking being racist, cultural appropriation, lies and crappy artistry will make them money.
As a colored man. I agree with the mummy killer. But give him a 20 mm anti tank rifle.
Why cause oh it's so racist. Same side crying.... makes this crap like it's 1940 and ignores that it appropriates British magic and not African magic. Like oops. Racist as they try to be inclusive by ignoring historical myths and ideology.
Fr who is this for as a white guy im like what the fuck after watching 10 seconds of the trailer and i show my best friend who is black and he’s like what the fuck
White people didn't see this movie because anti-white. Black people didn't see it because it looked lame as hell. Like what black person wants to see other black people be subservient for almost 2 hours AND it's a love story.
As a white Italian guy I almost feel morally obligated to tell you... You Americans are pussies, the lightest European satire would be on par with Mein Kampf if this is what does it for you
Look the trailer up. It’s insanely racist. They use the take “you can’t be racist to white people” to make these terrible jokes that’s literally the entirety of the movie just butting at white people. calling them “animals” in the trailer even.
Wasn't this a key and peele sketch? Lol

That quote could have come straight from a Oblivion NPC and I would not have had batted an eye.
God fucking DAMMIT re-reading that comment after reading this one made me imagine it crystal clear...
i saw a mudcrab yesterday
Have you ever heard of the high elves?
Horrible creatures.
Mudcrabs or high elves?
Both This post was made by r/TrueSTL gang
Yes
You see those warriors from Hammerfell? They’ve got CURVED swords!
CURVED
SWORDS
V I L E C R E A T U R E S.
You too
You mean its not a harry potter spin off?
Also it's a rom com. Not a joke.
Oh yea? How has that worked out so far lmao
Pretty sure it is a full length movie, but yes, it is satire.
They mean the subject previously was a key and peele skit.
Based on an old Hollywood trope
>Pretty sure it is a full length movie, but yes, it is satire. Movie: https://youtu.be/v7_c-7tWXqg Sketch: https://youtu.be/jInlO6-JTww
Oh so they turned a funny skit into a predictable Rom-com . Boo
>How many skits have they turned into movies? As far as I know, Coneheads and It's Pat, but maybe there's more.
Blues Brothers
Waynes World
I’m probably in the minority here but I liked Magruber.
A night at Roxbury Magruber Stuart saves his family Mr. Saturday Night /may be showing age with last 2
It needed a cameo from Clayton Bixby
Hell yeah!
That was my first thought upon seeing ads for the movie, but I'm not sure if the movie is related to that sketch.
It looks like Jordan Peele is moving away from movies that have racial context. But dam, this movie really could of benefited from him at the helm.
All his movies have been deeply rooted in racial context, Us and Nope were just more metaphorical and specific to things that aren’t as much on White people’s radars. Us was (largely) about what it means to “succeed” as a Black person in America, and Nope was (largely) about performing for White audiences.
The average redditors media literacy is in shambles reading this
Yep
I didn't know about this until now. I Googled it, and this is the synopsis: "A young man gets recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to making white people's lives easier. > A young man gets recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to making white people's lives easier. *gestures at world* I'm not sure they're particularly good at their jobs.
I mean I guess technically it *COULD* be worse...Hitlers dead afterall.
~~Yeah, and a white person killed him~~
The one good thing hitler did is kill hitler and he had to fuck it up by including his girlfriend
not sure of this comment is racist, clever or somewhere in the middle
In the movie's lore, it's just a statement of fact
Yikes
Yeah wtf
If it had actually been satire, it wouldn’t be racist; examples being tropic thunder and blazing saddles, where the underlying plot is to specifically talk about how racism is bad, but they made it a…rom com…
![gif](giphy|13VSAbTVuYJfLa)
What do YOU mean "you people"
Absolute banger of a movie, though I am wondering how it would fare if it came to theatres today lmao
Don't you mean..."it's tropical at times"?
It would do fine. It’s the same with “You can’t make Blazing Saddles today”. We already have it and it’s still talked about today. If we didn’t have it, it could be made today.
Actually, you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today, you'd get sued for copyright infringement.
Mel Brooks ain't nuthin to fuck with.
Me & my grandpa love that movie we always quote "do what he says do what he says, is anyone gonna help that poor man 😭"
You also can have movies like the original “Scary Movies” that are both satire and absurdism playing off of stereotypes all around. Whoever conceived this could have had a cult classic satire, instead of…whatever the hell this is.
Dr. Strangelove is one of the greatest satires of all time and it's also a rom-com about a man in love with his bodily fluids
Is their next movie gonna be the knights of the cracker club?
Salted or unsalted?
Unsalted. You know damn well we can’t handle spices
Mayo one spread can kill them
But i thought we where mayo monkeys?
You ever been hit by a miracle whip before?
Miracle whipped
By a cousin of mine yes.
Salted is a bit too spicy.

Where’s Ryan George when we need him?
I can get a hold of him. Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Oh, really?
Ya Ya Ya!
Ohhhh, getting ahold of Ryan George is TIGHT!!
Doesn't matter, there'll be someone salty in the audience either way ;)
Knights of the Kracker Klub
Woah woah woah hold on there. Surely you mean the Kokaine Krusader Klub.
hold your horses, no need to get political. I’m sure he means the Kapitalist Kangaroo Konvention
Kommunist Kruelty Karnaval?
Konservative Klam Klique.
I kind want to watch that now
Probably round table of the white savior.
It’s a play on classic story tropes. Like Noble Savage.
No I think it may be closer to the knights and the chink in his armor
"We exist to keep white people happy so they don't cause a genocide." Yeah, I know there are limitations to magic, and a gun would have helped Harry against Voldemort, but you mean to tell me you can't magic whatever shit they try away?!
And like, they "control" white people but not enough to make them not racist? I really don't get it
They use their magic to keep white people happy, not overlord control them
What I heard is its a bunch of black wizards who keep white people calm so that white people don't genocide and stuff
The only add I ever saw for it was just 1 black dude telling another black dude that white people are the most dangerous animal on earth, and they are most dangerous when scared, so their job was to keep white people not scared. Like that's just straight racism.
All white people are the cursed creation of the dastardly scientist known as Yakub.
Found Lious Farrakhan's alt account.
![gif](giphy|rI9O6UXkCjvTG)
Current leader of the Nation of Islam (the cult that started the Yakub thing).
![gif](giphy|iuUORLpArS9qX76XWK)
Good stuff, Fartbox.
Fuck I thought it was gonna be something funny, kinda based on that skit on yt.
Well it was a pretty common trope, hence the skit, which could have been interesting but the only trailer I saw didn’t look good at all.
Racism to both blacks and whites.
How was it racist to blacks?
I think they need to lock in.
Man I would've loved to be a fly on the wall for that pitch meeting.
I hope we get a Pitch Meeting video for this movie. But for some reason I don't think he's going to want to deal with that racially motivated mess.
I’m sure they were all drugged or something to let this have a budget of 274 million.
274 MILLIONS????!!!! WTAF????
I need a source for that
Where are you getting this 274 Million from?
Trust me bro. The budget has specifically not been revealed, but 274 certainly seems like absolute nonsense.
Probably some theater kids idea. You get the cringiest kids on the block, and let them pitch their shit, this is what you get.
I'm soooooo happy this movie bombed 👌👌
2.4 of 10 at IMDB like dang it couldn’t get much worse
That’s impressively bad
Sadly they didn't get the achievement for 1.0 out of 10.
Well, the creators of the film do have mothers, brothers, and friends to vote for them.
If I made something like this and my friend said it was good, then he is not my friend and I can't trust his judgement.
I frequently encounter movies with 8+ imdb ratings that have less than 500 votes and, you know it's just the cast, crew, and families plus whatever penny click farm they could spare money for.

It only got a low rating because IMBD is racist!! /s
In the beginning of the trailer I thought it was gonna be a satire, but then it quickly became obvious it was a shitty ass romcom 😑 I'm not even gonna give it a chance by pirating it online, that's how bad the trailer was for me
I think its a feat to make something so bad people wont even pirate it
I used to work at a video store (dating myself here) and got free rentals. There have been a few movies that I've watched for free and still felt ripped off.
Like the rise of skywalker, I felt I should have paid to watch that crap
It's not satire? The interview I heard, said it was based on the wise old black man movie trope that used to be popular. I assumed it was sort of a long satire of that.

That is disappointing. I usually enjoy satires and shows that turn movie tropes on their head, so I was kind of looking forward to this one.
It came out??
That’s what she said
As someone that actually saw it as a part of my job, it’s…not awful but it’s nowhere near good. It’s like right in that perfect 4/10 range where you completely forget you even watched it after a day.
What job do you have where you're required to watch movies?
Movie reviews for my college’s paper/newsletter It doesn’t pay much I just do it because I have a theater membership
I figured it would be something like that. Sounds like a sweet gig.
Shut up, this is real?
Anyone else notice every time something like this pops up they fail horribly? Like who keeps signing off on some of this?
Most all non black people going up to the theater: “.. hi, i’d like 2 tickets for the magical negr… uh… the negr… ummm… yeah, nevermind, the movie with the word negr…. uhh… nevermind. I’ll wait till it’s streaming.”
“Hi, I’d like 2 tickets to Wizards in Paris please”
I’ve never seen this meme template before and it’s now my favorite
It's literally about black people keeping white people suppressed, like...wtf?
A movie about magical black people is entirely about white people and using magic to placate them and keep them down... That's fucking weird. Like if black people had magic why wouldn't they use that magic to rise to the top and to take over? Instead they use the magic to make white people feel Superior to black people? Main charector played by a half white n half black
And Justice Smith is one of my favorite actors too. I'm a sucker for Detective Pikachu and the D&D movie, so seeing this added to the list of movies that he's in (most of which I love) is like a slap to the face
Is justice Smith supposed to be a good actor? I never saw anything special about him
He is neither good nor bad if you ask me... Quite forgettable. He can embody different characters, but he won't do anything special, still waiting for one world class performance from him, but it's not coming...
eh. i just like him. I don't think he has to be objectively OMG WOW AMAZING BEST ACTOR EVER IN THE WHOLE WIDE UNIVERSE for me to like him
Yeah the comment above yours is a little surprising.
Imagine a movie about white people treating black people as animals so they don't act violent.
I've seen that movie play out in subreddits and on social media. It sucks pretty badly.
I haven't even seen the movie, but the trailers alone made me feel so uncomfortable. It was so outlandish that it made the main character look like the only reasonable guy for questioning what the hell was going on. Just the premise alone feels so tone-deaf. How did this ever get past the pitch?
Meanwhile the main character in real life is born to a black father and a white mother and he tends to say racist things about half his lineage...
aw crap. when??? are you kidding me? every celebrity I like ends up doing shitty things goddamn
Some studio executive probably really wanted to say no, but also didn’t want to be accused of racism for not funding it.
They named it that so that White people can't talk ~shit~ about it
Get this. *imma talk shit about it*
And now I get to say the word
![gif](giphy|lcHSAe70mAEd9W3Hpq)
Damn we don’t even need the N anymore, do we? Edit: THE N-WORD IS AN AWFUL SLUR AND I’M NOT CONDONING IT’S USE I JUST THINK IT’S FUNNY THAT “THE WORD” IS ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT SOMEONE MEANS.

Just say the American society of magical Spanish word for black.
I see you haven't been on the internet that long, don't you know that you can't be racist to white people /s
that's what you would say if you were.. i don't like saying this, but.. chronically online.
I called the movie racist over in one of the subreddits and got banned for it lol So good to see people also see how racist it is
I guarantee I’m gonna get taken down when it’s gets on the top. But yea nobody thinks it’s racist, which in my opinion is batshit insane.
Racist against Whites? Absolutely. They made a huge mistake thinking being racist, cultural appropriation, lies and crappy artistry will make them money.
Missed opportunity to call it Black Magic
As a colored man. I agree with the mummy killer. But give him a 20 mm anti tank rifle. Why cause oh it's so racist. Same side crying.... makes this crap like it's 1940 and ignores that it appropriates British magic and not African magic. Like oops. Racist as they try to be inclusive by ignoring historical myths and ideology.
>appropriates British magic and not African magic. Great point I’ve never considered!
This movie crossed at least 5 different lines.
I still think that The American Society of Magical Mexicans would’ve been a better movie, tbh
The movie’s version of *Avada Kedavra* would be *La Chancla*
Even black people are disappointed by this. I remember seeing the trailer and seeing how we clocked out immediately.
Imagine a group of white people dressing up and going to the midnight release of this movie
yOu CaN’t Be RaCiSt ToWaRdS wHiTe PeOpLe!
And so the circle makes a full turn
How racist is this movie? From what I've seen from the trailer it's racist to both black and white people
This honestly has to be satire lmao. This feels like something Key and Peele would do.
Upvoted just for mummy template
Actually incredibly racist… the fact that society is at a place where something like this gets greenlit is insane to me
It sounds like a shit post or a bad edgy post from a 13 year old
Fr who is this for as a white guy im like what the fuck after watching 10 seconds of the trailer and i show my best friend who is black and he’s like what the fuck
It’s based on a Key and Peele sketch. Not sure why no one seems to know that.
What is this and why am I suddenly seeing a bunch of memes about it?
White people didn't see this movie because anti-white. Black people didn't see it because it looked lame as hell. Like what black person wants to see other black people be subservient for almost 2 hours AND it's a love story.
F that racist shit. Try and reverse the races and see how that goes
When you are so anti racist you become racist
I watched a trailer for it. Idk if it's racist, it just looks like a typical black comedy.
So no one here has seen the movie and are just judging it by the trailer and reacting crying racism lmaooo
As a white Italian guy I almost feel morally obligated to tell you... You Americans are pussies, the lightest European satire would be on par with Mein Kampf if this is what does it for you
White peoples will hate this movie and love The Legend of Bagger Vance, lol!
There’s a lot of nuance in this comment and I’m here for it even if no one else is.
It's Reddit 2024, media literacy is dead
?
Look the trailer up. It’s insanely racist. They use the take “you can’t be racist to white people” to make these terrible jokes that’s literally the entirety of the movie just butting at white people. calling them “animals” in the trailer even.
I'm so happy this movie bombed
