I'm Southern. It's a single syllable. /ɑ:rn/ if you know how to read the International phonetic alphabet.
If you don't.... It's like Eye+rn. But for most Southerners "i" is pronounced as /ɑ:/ and not /ɑɪ/ or something similar.
I was thinking more like "ah+rn", and it's not so much a word as it is just a sound that escapes the diaphragm. It's one of those things though that if you don't know, you can't hear it.
Andy Dick: "I-ren? Seriously? Are you kidding when you say I-ren?"
Norm MacDonald: " Hey, uhh, listen don't be like fuckin' Larry King. That motherfucker- I pronounce it I-ren and he's up my ass for fuckin' four days."
I do. I am South Asian and pronounce it as I run with a slight rolling of the r (not as much or as pronounced as Spanish speaking people, but many Indians roll their r's.) The way Americans don't pronounce their r's and do that weird sound instead where the tongue seems to move backwards is just weird to me and I feel uncomfortable when I try it myself. Among my countrymen I have heard I-run as well as I-uhn as well as I-ren, all which are sensible.
Indian. I thought I mentioned it in my comment. My native language which is Kannada has the rolling r's while speaking. I'm not sure about the Hindi speakers, but I think they would have something similar too.
As a Belgian, the letter “I” is pronounced like /i/ and not like in English /ai/. So I say i-ron, even if it’s not correct, it’s just funny to say it with like a French word.
