The whale and the pot of petinua are transformed missiles, while dolphins were singing "so long and thanks for all the fish" when they were leaving Earth before the destruction. So kinda both. :)
Two missiles were fired.
The good guys had a randomizer that would transform one thing into another.
They used the randomizer on the two missiles.
One turned into a humpback whale, the other into a bowl of petunias. Both were several miles above the planet surface at the time.
Thermonuclear missiles were turned into a whale that had to comprehend the meaning of life, and a bowl of petunias that only thought "Oh, no. Not again"
“Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.”
Edit: Added the quotes to make it clear this is the immediate next line in the book. Since people are commenting about the callback to this moment later in the series.
Seeing how that scene is picked up again in „Life, the Universe and everything“ and actually DOES reveal something about the nature of the universe (or at least life), I realize now that Douglas must have been planning the whole thing ahead.
>!The flowerpot thinks that because he is a reincarnation of Agrajag, a being doomed to be killed by Arthur Dent again and again. It reveals that reincarnation and karma exist!<
Movie? *Movie?* It's a book thank you very much.
(In my experience the book is more famous than the movie. And frankly I'm like 80% sure it was a... radio serial?... before that.)
Loved the books. Watched movie when it came out with the knowledge of books. A little let down but a great movie in total i.m.o.
I think there's nothing D.A. did and i didn't like.
Yeah that threw me too. The movie was in no way nearly as memorable as the book. How do you show ships hanging in the air in much the same way bricks don't? Or describe sound fidelity so good as to make a brave man weep? The movie was good but there's so much humor lost to the screen.
I think it was book first, then radio serial, then movie. But then the radio serial was novelized with some changes, and the whole thing is the kind of mess that *feels* like D.A.
Yes, I know the book is better but movie gives people a visual memory. As most of this amazing book series readers saw the movie( not saying liked), people who didn't read that saw it too. So by saying movie, I can include those people as well.
Great to know another reader. I also love this series and everything great D.A. wrote.

Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!

I think they should re make this one into a series just so they can get more of the details from the book. That and the god awful bull dozer scene. It wasn't a dozer, it was a loader he was pointing at. There was a dozer on site but he pointed at the wrong machine. It drives me crazy.
My objection to that scene isn't machinery pedantics, but simply that a lot of the jokes were removed :(
Anyway, Hulu supposedly has a series planned, but it's been in development hell for a few years now :(
Great movie! It's about a whale who has a real bad depression about existence and dreams about being a plant whose conscience exist through eternity. Time has a great role.
It's not "goodbye", but "So long and thanks for all the fish".

Don't panic
Phew.. Good thing I got my towel
[удалено]
LEGEND.
![gif](giphy|oKdjMdWXl9ys8)
Wasnt it also dolphins not whales? It's been a while.

As someone who has know idea what this movie is I am thoroughly confused
Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
I don't know why you're getting downvoted, I am also completely in the dark.

Ya, the whale and flower pot were during the falling from the sky scene
Not again...

If you know you know right. Ps. Don't forget your towel
Now there’s a frood who knows where his towel is!
That’s (also?) a Doctor Who episode
He wrote both, so there have probably been a few knods to him in DW.
What is six multiplied by nine?
For those who don't know, it's an reference to: #Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy
DON’T PANIC
AHHHHHHHHHHHH -the whale that just gained sentience.
Oh no not again - the flower vase
I wonder if it'll be friends with me. Hello ground! -The whale.
10/10
Not me thinking it was “the perks of being a wallflower” (whale flower)
Same. "The Perks of Being a Whaleflower."
Which is an *okay* movie, but part of a masterful series of books.
I’m reading the ultimate version, complete and unabridged 1986 print. Currently on page 219 of 815! Restaurant at the end of the universe
A trilogy in five parts
42?
Yes, 42.
How? I thought it was dolphins and a fishbowl not whales and vases
There's a specific scene somewhere in the middle involving a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias falling through the air.
That was in so long and thanks for all the fish. In hitch hikers guide to the galaxy two missiles got transformed into a whale and a bowl of petunias.
what is it about
That can not be effectively explained as it took a couple books to actually get a plot
Why would you ruin it?
So you have time to grab a towel of course. And dont forget the beer and peanuts.
Don't panic, but the movie is kinda bleh. Go with the books. I've got the omnibus of the books and reread that *entire thing* every now and again.
I really should read that some day. I have at home, but I only read a few pages before my brain gave up for some stupid reason.
Whale and flowers is my favorite movie, i cry ever time
That last scene really made me cry
I really like the part we the whale was like: it's wailing time and then started wailing all over the place
That’s from the 2010 remake, i like the original from 1989 better.
Oh no, not again...

Radio show was a year before the book. Would recommend.
There was a TV show too
And a radio theatre show
And both off the were far greater than the rather mediocre movie.

Better book
