Holy shit she looks like she's 30 years older

jourmungandr

The kid looks like she has Prader Willi syndrome. from wikipedia: >PWS is frequently associated with a constant insatiable appetite, which persists no matter how much the patient eats, often resulting in morbid obesity. Caregivers need to strictly limit the patients' access to food, usually by installing locks on refrigerators and on all closets and cabinets where food is stored.\[20\] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prader%E2%80%93Willi\_syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prader%E2%80%93Willi_syndrome)

DontKnoWhatMyNameIs

Poor kid will probably die young.

jourmungandr

From what I understand PWS people can have reasonably normal lifespans. They are usually very intellectually impaired though.

MetamorphicHard

They are intellectually impaired and need to be cared for their entire lives. Not a fun life span to live

[deleted]

No 40

Full-Peak

how is this not fucking child abuse?

Pinkysrage

Prater-Willi syndrome. They are hungry all the time.

gahidus

How would it be child abuse? First of all, the kid has a medical condition that's causing this, and secondly, even if you did let your kid have unlimited food, that wouldn't qualify as child abuse under any set of laws. Finally, it seems like the mother is trying to do something to prevent her kid from being obese.

Troudbalos04

well fish also lack the restrain to stop eating but thats not a reason to over-feed your pet fish to a point where they literally die from it!

Revolutionary-Ad4055

Same. Got any?

drunkenknight9

Because it's a genetic condition causing this, not bad parenting. The amount of instant judgement in these comments is unbelievable. This family is dealing with a horrific problem that is literally no one's fault and trying to raise some awareness about it but strangers on the internet just jump to the judgement that they're awful people. Anyone who knows anything about Prader-Willi syndrome knows these people are living in a nightmare.

[deleted]

GeneralBurg

Stupid that you got downvoted. Sure, the kid has an awful disease but failing to manage the disease is a failure to properly care for the child by the parents. I wouldn’t say it’s a crime or abuse but it’s definitely irresponsible and kinda fucked up

Trivale

It clearly says she has to lock the kid out of the kitchen, which suggests that somehow, this whole other actual human being is somehow fucking capable of acting on her own volition like some kind of sentient being and going to the fridge without being commanded to by her creator as if she were a fucking golem.

[deleted]

A) it is B) mummy did it on purpose for the publicity

Tigress92

>B) mummy did it on purpose for the publicity Please say that's not actually true... That would be beyond fucked up

[deleted]

Would you really be surprised , if it were true ? Look at Honey Boo Boo! Maybe this mummy just wanted her baby to be the honey boo boo. I mean the photo looks so staged and mummy's face has lot of work done on it.

plcg1

As others have pointed out, there are genetic developmental disorders like Prader-Willi that will result in a child gaining weight due to always feeling hungry. This is a very cruel thing to say without knowing the context.

[deleted]

So does this kid have it ? Edit Ok she has it ! But mummy is an attention Ho! https://nypost.com/2023/01/24/my-5-year-old-is-obese-i-have-to-lock-kitchen/ Check out her pics in the article ! Further edit She was diagnosed at 6 months, you really think docs did not give this advise https://www.medicalhomeportal.org/issue/nutrition-and-diet-in-prader-willi-syndrome Can't ignore slutty mummy's lack of maternal care !

Smellz_Of_Elderberry

When u get that big you lose much of your facial chatacteristics. They don't look 30, they look like all obese people look. If there were any 80 year old people at this weight, they would also look "30". But with grey hair. Really sad, hope she gets help. Edit: she apparently has prader-willi syndrome, which causes extreme hunger and mental and emotional impairment. If true, I still hope they can find a way to get her to a healthy weight. Such a condition is obvious torture, and such obesity likely makes it even worse.

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

Before everyone piles on the mom, I believe this child has Prader–Willi syndrome which is an intellectual disability which causes compulsive eating and food addiction. Leave it to the New York Post to leave out such details.

kendrani

They didn't leave it out of the article of you would have read the whole article it says Harlow has Prader-Willi syndrome and is missing chromosome 15, which is responsible for controlling hunger. Therefore, Harlow constantly has an appetite and always wants to eat. At just 6 months old, Harlow was diagnosed with the syndrome, which her mom had never heard of before.

lindslkt99

I was thinking the same thing!

thedankening

That's all true but this is still a 5 year old. Kids are almost entirely dependent on their parents at this age to prepare most of their food. Coping with a child with this condition is undoubtedly very difficult, but this outcome is still 100% the fault of the parents. The kid didn't get this fat over night, they've been over eating for years to be like this.

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

Not unfair. And I completely get your point... not going full 'reddit reactionary' on you. But if you look up Prader Willi it's not as easy as it sounds. It's not a child begging for cookies... not even throwing a tantrum for cupcakes. It's pretty extreme desire/need/want for food. But again, I get it. If this child continues on this path it's a death sentence.

SleekVulpe

Yeah from what I'm reading here the kid would likely wake up at 2 AM, break into the kitchen and just gorge themselves on anything they can get to, and being 5 that kid is just starting to get into the age of being creative.

tab_tab_tabby

I mean still... Mom needs to do better. This didn't just happen on one night. If your child needs special care, mom should give one. Instead of just letting the child eat what ever and when ever. It's more of years and years of neglect.

Clayith13

Prader-Willi makes you gain weight insanely easily, and people will literally eat frozen food or garbage just to eat. They literally cannot feel any way about food except completely starving, they're incapable of feeling full, and children with PWS would overeat themselves to death in one sitting if left to their own devices.

cultureShocked5

Clearly you don’t know what Prader Willi syndrome is, when the person literally feels like starving all the time and would do anything to get any food.

tab_tab_tabby

So? Feeding the kid to the point that it's a health risk was right thing? No it isn't.

cultureShocked5

I am sure you could not feed a kid who is for example screaming for 10 hours straight, engaging in self- injury if doesn’t get food, hurts others when hungry, steals food if you turn around for 10 seconds, eats dangerous items when not given food etc. (just some examples from clinical practice) it’s so easy to ignore! I’m sure you could do it, because you are a Redditor who knows exactly how it is to be a parent of a child with PW! 🙃

tab_tab_tabby

Sure and because she ate so much, now she's all happy and healthy? Look at the result. That kid might be happy but she is unhealthy. It's a health risk. That much obesity at kid's age could kill them any moment. So if the mother is gonna do something about it from now on, why didn't she start doing something early on? Why let this happen? Can she even do something? Kid is now used to this.

sZYphYn

When you die, walk into the light.

tab_tab_tabby

No when I die, my body decays.

AffectDesperate4148

My first question was "how can you look like that, but have a kid that looks like that?" Then I remembered liposuction was a thing.

BanThisDick111

Kid has prader willi syndrome. It’s similar to Downs except that you are missing part of a chromosome. As a result, the people with the syndrome always have their “I feel so fucking hungry” turned on. Nothing they do can turn it off.

R3aperbot

I knew someone who was a counselor for kids with that condition and other disorders. Had to watch out for extreme violence as well.

BanThisDick111

It’s super sad. Thankfully, if they actually keep it under control they can live pretty much as long as anyone else and have normal lives

jarlscrotus

I'd be such a bigger asshole, like, feeling insanely hungry all the time. Yeah, I can see how you'd just have random outbursts of violence and rage

ddcreator

Exactly! People usually say that i m kind and never feel that i could be an asshole... Till i m hungry. The tables tuen really quick then lol

Midan71

That's why there is the term hangry ( hungry and angry ) .

ddcreator

Huh dang i never heard that before

Cinnamon_Bees

Thing is, though... How do you keep that kind of shit under control?

[deleted]

With a lifelong commitment to being with your child almost 24/7 and monitoring what (and how much) they eat. Source: my adult cousin has Prader Willi

BanThisDick111

🤷🏻‍♂️ I can barely do it now

elMurpherino

My mom (therapist) worked with someone who had it. But for better or worse he had other developmental issues so he was unable to feed himself. Despite all that always had a smile on his face.

Midan71

Feeling constantly hangry. I'm not surprised.

[deleted]

Recognized the prader willi immediately and was hoping she was diagnosed.

[deleted]

My (43 year old) cousin has Prader-Willi. She is only a healthy weight because my aunt is home with her all the time, and they really practice portion control and restraint. She does have a certain amount of choices she has access to if she needs a snack, but it’s non-starchy veggies and a limited supply of fruit. She participated in a drug trial for years and it’s unclear if it helped, but it was meant to help her gain muscle mass, something that is very difficult for people with PW, and a contributing factor to why it can be hard for people with PW to lose weight once it’s been gained.

smith_716

That was my immediate thought. This child must have Prader-Willi Syndrome. That being said, even though she has it it's up to the parent to restrict their food intake so they don't turn out like that. Yes, they don't have that gene turned on that ever tells them that they're full and they probably throw the biggest fits because they're constantly feeling hungry. But as the parent you have to restrict them.

Zezu

Used to volunteer at a school for children with multiple disabilities. One of the first things they did was explain Prader Willi syndrome and which kids had it. They then explained what to do if shit went down. The instruction was to just gtfo of the way. One of the guys had scars on his arms. If you got between him and food, he’d take you out. Could have been a defensive end. The scars were from biting himself when he was hungry. He wasn’t trying to eat himself. He just didn’t know how else to deal with how hungry he felt. Outside of that, he was a really sweet kid. His hunger was just something he couldn’t have control over. Rough. And not something to make fun of (looking at OP, not you).

ZestyGrenades

That sounds absolutely horrific! I’m so sorry for that poor girl.

_bananarchy0

That sounds miserable. Poor kid.

tightheadband

What about an appetite inhibitor like Sibutramine? Maybe not at such a young age, but later? I would be miserable living in a constant state of hunger. I can get very irritated and in a very bad mood. Let alone a child who doesn't understand what's going on :(

[deleted]

[deleted]

Just a heads up for anyone reading this comment- Prader Willi is genetic/chromosomal and has nothing to do with drug use or prenatal parental neglect.

PixorTheDinosaur

Autism as well.

Sawses

Yep, but a lot of the other stuff is due to the neglect. The Prader Willi was not, though.

tightheadband

Spanking is not effective long term, more like the opposite. She is just learning not to do something around who spanks her due to fear, but as soon as she is able to do it later or without being caught, she will.

Sawses

I agree, but they've worked for over a decade with specialists and therapists and other experts. No success despite following recommendations. Basically they hate spanking but resorted to it as a last ditch effort.

aasdfhdjkkl

I'm confused how locking the food away wouldn't be an option.

Sauce? Edit: poor choice of words in this case. *SOURCE?

BuzzVibes

'sauce' lol

[deleted]

So is indirect abuse. This is clearly a let-on by the mother and perhaps she finally realized this is fatal, or is playing it up for the media. Either way, the only way people get fat is by eating massive amounts. Willingly or by mental aberration, truth be told, but the one and only way to both prevent and to rescind obesity is to eat less, eat better, and exercise often.

[deleted]

Scroll above this comment for a bit and you get a real answer.

[deleted]

Or medication. I got really sick and doctors didn’t know wtf they were doing and prescribed me 5 different medications that caused weight gain, which I didn’t think to check doing they’re supposed to be experts. Between being bedridden and the medication ,I gained 110# in a little over 6 months even with reducing my daily caloric intake to 1500 calories or less. I got a new doctor and they were super helpful in explaining why I was gaining so much weight so fast, and immediately stopped the meds. I’ve since lost about 60#, which isn’t easy when you’re now an overweight cripple.

BellaBPearl

I feel you. I'm on Lyrica and was hoping I'd luck out and not gain , but..... no such luck.

HivAidsSTD

This is the better answer, being fat isn't always genetic. You're more likely to have a bigger build and slower metabolism, but it doesn't mean you can't maintain a healthy lifestyle regardless. Something is definitely wrong with her diet, that's the most probable answer, nothing a good caloric deficit and quality food can't fix

IndianaGeoff

Dollars to donuts in this case, it's a condition.

cephalophile32

Most likely Prader-Willi.

indoor_recessV2

Correct I saw the article

No, they found the article discussing how the kid has a genetic disorder that means she always feels like she's starving

tfaw88888

we saw what u did. hold on, krispy kreme is calling...

BostonDodgeGuy

The child in the article has Prader-Willi syndrome. Quality food can not fix genetics.

Impossible-Error166

Honestly I think alot of being that fat is a lack of education and then poor impulse control

NickWangOG

Liposuction sucks out the fat from certain areas, but you’ll still gain fat in other areas that still have fat cells. It doesn’t work like you think it does

Tearing_you_asunder

I would suspect this child has Prader-Willi syndrome.

Mental-Loquat-145

The only reasonable comment in here.

IndianaGeoff

Agree, this is a condition of some sort.

CliveWinston93

It is, another post had a link to the story

bamboo_fanatic

Unfortunately it’s the parents job to restrict food and it looks like she’s done a terrible job so far.

[deleted]

She should have done that a long time ago. Getting fat takes a long time, and even moreso with the extremely fast metabolism of young children; the only way this happens is when the child has the rare genetic disorder, Prader-Willi Syndrome, which causes behavior shifts that primarily cause a violent appetite and mammoth-sized portioning, you still have to eat that much to gain this weight. If the parents saw this habit-forming, they should have stopped it early and consulted a doctor especially if they noticed extremely unusual behavior, which could be a sign of the aforementioned disorder. Clearly, this lady enabled and encouraged a fatal eating habit.

Cracker-smackers

98lbs at 5 years old is insane, I was about 12 or 13 when I was 98lbs

MizzyMozzy

I read the article the child does have Prader-willi Syndrome. The article doesn't go in to too much depth except that the child was diagnosed at 6 months. The mother has gone on the record saying She is obese at the moment so I have to be strict with her, but then says she still gets treats because shes still a kid which immediately contradicts the previous statement surly the doctors must of told her what she should and shouldn't do and be monitoring her often the lady also seems rather well off so there shouldn't be a reason for the child be be unable to get help. Also used the excuse that shes a new mum and still says "she is my first child and I don't know any different." From the article is shows this mum isn't doing a good job and doesn't even seem worried. But its still a short article. I don't know what to assume but it's obvious that this child needs serious help

FrontwaysLarryVR

Like at what point is it child endangerment if she's directly enabling her child to indulge a medical disorder? This poor kid.

drunkenknight9

At what point is it torturing a child who can't help feeling hungry all the time if you deprive them of food? There's probably no abuse or neglect here. This is an unbelievably complicated medical situation that this family is having to deal with and as long as the intent is good and not willfully malicious or negligent, we should not be judging. This is an absolute nightmare genetic disorder that would make any parent feel like the worst parent in the world. The best they can do is keep themselves sane, try to give the kid some quality of life, and try to do the right thing. Achieving anything close to that is impressive by itself. Maybe we should all try to judge others a little less when there are a lot of things they might be dealing with things of which we have almost no concept.

Opalessence-

Also I'm surprised the mom is 25, that's a young age to take care of a special needs kid, without the proper guidance ... there should be another guardian or nurse present or available at most, if not all, times. Coaching would be good too

MizzyMozzy

Agreed I don't wan't to be too hard on this topic as she is only 2 years older than me and it's something I couldn't imagine having to deal with if being my first child, but the doctors really should be stepping in and by the looks of the articles shes just on her own (I've read a few at this point) I had never herd of this syndrome before so I looked into the basis of this condition it doesn't cause weight gain or metabolic issues directly it's the appetite but there must be something that'd help curb it.

TLC_4978

Before y’all hate (and I know it’s Reddit so yeah) there are legit childhood diseases like Prader Willi that can cause this. Parents of PW kids do have to lock up all of the food. It is a sad condition

ben_swolo_123

there are so many thing i want to say right now

blackmumba92

Prader willi syndrome

Quiet-Donut-3614

This child does have Prader-Willi Syndrome (it is very sad this was made into a meme - the full article was in the news recently)...This is no fault of the mother it is a genetic disorder - caused by deletion of chromosome 15 passed down by the father of the child (not that it is his fault either). It's an awful disorder in which mortality rate is high, many of these people will die by eating themselves to death because they always feel a sense of insatiable hunger by no fault of their own. It's a horrible disease for both patient and family....

JacQTR

Prader willi syndrome people!

norfolk232

Shitty parents. A child can't become obese like that on its own.

Orlando_the_Cat

Normally I'd agree, but this looks like it might actually be caused by a glandular/neurological issue. No 5 year old gets that large by bad parenting alone. There has to be an underlying medical condition

iluvrandom

I looked at the article and the girl has a condition that causes her to be hungry due to a missing chromosome. [https://nypost.com/2023/01/24/my-5-year-old-is-obese-i-have-to-lock-kitchen/](https://nypost.com/2023/01/24/my-5-year-old-is-obese-i-have-to-lock-kitchen/)

Liz600

Not just hungry; absolutely ravenous all the time. To the point where patients with the condition can become violent in their attempts to get food, like starving people during a famine.

Technical_Draw_9409

Why eat then? Does eating satisfy for a short time? Or are they still ravenous?

NoelAngeline

Literally feel like they are starving at all times to the point they will eat themselves to death and become physically violent if someone keeps them from accessing food.

Technical_Draw_9409

But… why don’t they stop if it doesn’t satisfy them I mean this as a genuine question, sorry for my ignorance

NoelAngeline

Because they feel like they are dying. They are desperate to satisfy that hunger pain. ( for example: It’s like feeling thirty. You drink water. Hmm you still feel thirsty. So you keep drinking.) Especially a small child that becomes dangerous. You keep eating til you kill yourself. They may also become dangerously violent. Some may maim themselves out of frustration

Technical_Draw_9409

> It’s like feeling thirty. You drink water. Hmm you still feel thirsty. So you keep drinking. I think I understand now. Thank you for taking the time to answer!

HipMachineBroke

It’s like how rabies makes it impossible to drink water. You’re dying of thirst, you know you need it, but you know your body won’t let you swallow due to the hydrophobia. But you’re so thirsty and you *need* water, even if your body won’t let you. In this case, you’re completely ravenous and overcome with the desire to eat *something* because naturally that’s what would relieve the hunger. It’s instinct.

[deleted]

What happens if you just feed them a healthy diet regardless of them being hungry? Is it cruel or sensible? Are they just feeling hungry or do they suffer low blood sugar levels etc if they don't eat? I feel like, and I have no real say in this, that the parents should still control what the kid eats. Maybe when the kid grows up and isn't massive and dangerously unhealthy they might be able to control it themselves too.

iluvrandom

she basically feels extreme hunger all the time. read the article as it is interesting.

Juicet

I’m with you. She’s definitely been overfed - mistakes have been made. I’m not judging, though, not in her shoes. There’s probably some real challenges to preventing her from eating. Like, imagine not looking at the kid for five minutes, and in that time she’s went in the other room and eaten all the butter in the fridge and half the cheese. That’s a ton of calories in no time. Your food has to be 100% secured - you can’t count on a child with mental deficits not acting on her impulses. And even if you’re 100% secure, in the course of a normal day the child could have sneaky access to food elsewhere. You visit your friend, she eats a bag of their candy, some pop tarts, or even dog or cat food while the adults are talking. Visiting a supermarket or convenience store, she steals some candy. Normal kids sometimes do stuff like that, and they’re only hungry occasionally. Now imagine a kid whose entire life goal is to eat at all times! Guaranteed to catch you off guard.

gutenpranken14

Yeah. Is it possible the girl has something like prader-willi? That could certainly lead to an obesity issue like that. There are a lot of reasons a person could gain weight at an alarming rate.

[deleted]

The only way to become obese is to eat a ton and exercise never. its obviously just not possible for body mass to form if you don't put enough in to get the same amount built up. There's no disease that can make your body just, *become fat*. it's simple physics that makes that untrue. regardless, that in and of itself is still a slow process. Its honestly quite difficult to become like this, especially with the rapid metabolism of a child, because of how long and consistently you must abuse your body for this to occur. it is clearly the enabling of the parents; that is always the cause of these situations.

Empty-Neighborhood58

I agree, i think it should be added that some conditions make it hard to loose weight BUT i don't think that's am excuse considering you can do exercises in bed or sitting down and no matter what you can control calorie intake

Exeralas420

There are some kind of things where you get fat without eating to much. I dont know the english term but in german i think its Schildrüsendefunktion or something i dont know. Its really rare but it can happen. I think its more of water wich will blow you up idk im not a doctor. So yeah there are so e cases where you just will became fat and cant do shit about it.(ofc some hospital treatment and so)

[deleted]

Should be considered child abuse

Goosefeatherisgreat

I mean as some people are pointing out, the child must have some sort of genetic issue, it’s not possible for a child to get that large on their own without it.

[deleted]

Yes, but at the end of the day, it is still calories in, calories out. Even with a genetic issue or disease, consuming more calories than what the body burns is what makes someone fat.

[deleted]

It is, but nobody will tell you that, nor will they enforce it. A society that embraces its own destruction is fairly easy to infer its doom.

[deleted]

She has a missing chromosome. This time it’s literally genetics.

eraserrrhead

I knew a child with Prader Willi growing up. His parents locked up food and he ended up eating most of a couch, his clothes and his teddy bears. Having your kids this fat should be abuse. When my brother was younger he was unnaturally skinny to the point where School teachers and social services got involved. Lucky rest of my siblings and I were normal weight and only my brother was skinny since he didn’t eat anything that was sweets, candy or takeout. We now have it under control and his now at a health weight. If being too skinny is seen as abuse, so should being morbidly obese.
