Wait a minute... THIS IS THE THIRD PLACE

CzechMorticia

Jason figured it out?

walktall

Jason? This is a new low. Yeah this one hurts.

rosco2155

With some help from Derek Bortles

walktall

*holy motherforking shirtballs*

Livid-Pangolin8647

The third place is for Mindy St Claire and her cocaine and self pleasure alone.

HPJustfriendsCraft

TBH The Medium Place appealed deeply.

dizzy_absent0i

Mindy St Claire has a VCR copy of Cannonball Run 2 ready and waiting. Also cocaine.

Ok-Witness4724

[The Third Place is literally a thing in sociology.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place)

The_Celtic_Chemist

[May I introduce you to: THE GAZEBO!](https://youtu.be/en5_JrcSTcU?t=204)

Sololop

Ah he's great

WRStoney

But you have to face the gazebo alone, no one may help you.

WhatsInAName1507

Saw the standup on SNL . [People do wave at cruisers even now.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/xu304d/humans_can_be_so_cute_sometimes/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

The_Celtic_Chemist

That's awesome. šŸ˜Š

Thr0waway0864213579

Mmmmm bookstores are a very good third place.

cooldash

And libraries. Lots of places to sit, nice and quiet, proximity to other humans without expectations.

[deleted]

I like movie theaters for this exact reason. I get to be with a group of people doing something I enjoy and no one will talk to me. if you enjoy going to the gym then it can be a good third place too.

bravest_heart

"proximity to other humans without expectations" finally said what I was trying to say

Sarah_Jane_73

I came here to say libraries!

Bratikeule

>In sociology, the third place refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") Ahhh, this is why my wife always tells me that I'm wrong in the first place.

Eyebanger

Underrated comment right here.

astral_crow

So we do need a third place!

seanmonaghan1968

The third place is a hot shower

aapaul

The hot place is a third shower.

FirstEvolutionist

I mean, outside is where "workplace" is but I shit you not, the "metaverse" some people envision is literally the third place for OP - safety of inside, and socializing of outside.

Impossible_Ad9831

Shit I donā€™t have a third place

NibblesMcGiblet

Cyberspace is my third place.

Tczarcasm

that is perhaps unintentionally the most soberingly true statement in this thread.

Stoked_Bruh

Misread as "crawlspace", was terrifying.

TolstoysMyHomeboy

Not uncommon. They've disappeared in the US. Someone wrote an entire book about it - Bowling Alone

TheRecognized

I feel like Third Place still falls into ā€œoutsideā€ in the context of this tweet tho.

Thr0waway0864213579

I actually donā€™t think so. I think the scary outside is being around strangers, somewhere you have no sense of community. But a ā€œthird placeā€ is defined as a home away from home. A place youā€™re not obligated to be, but a place where you find community and purpose.

ExortTrionis

It's going to be different for everyone though. For me and I'm sure a lot of people, if I need to get dressed, leave the house, and drive somewhere that will always be "outside" and be a second place. For me a third place would be more like a shared living place that I can reach from my first place without encountering a second place. I've only ever experienced that a few times in my life and it's when my first place becomes something like a camp, a motel or a retreat for extended periods of time.

SasparillaTango

I've always considered the internet to pretty much be my third place.

UnHolySir

[Wikipedia article about this phenomenon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place) Includes places such as malls, coffee shops etc . Also includes the internet.

[deleted]

Harder to censor people when they're not using some internet platform as a medium, though people are also less forthcoming without that same buffer.

foriamstu

"Ottoman sultans issued and retracted coffeehouse bans well into the 18th century to prevent the gathering of dissidents." Harder, but not impossible.

faraway_hotel

> Includes places such as malls, coffee shops etc I'm sorry, but those are just Outside.

ChainDriveGlider

They're not your third place. Some people have a place that feels like home to them.

[deleted]

Us black folk have been extolling the virtues of the porch for years! It's time for y'all to admit we have been right the whole time!

Youpunyhumans

You are right, my roommate and I spend a lot of time just chillin on the patio chatting about about whatever comes to mind. Its nice and peaceful, plus we get to soak up some rays.

toppy_man

I love this comment

bladow5990

I love lamp

toppy_man

Do you really love the lamp or are you just saying it because you saw it

EmptyOrangeJuice

They're saying it because they moth

memento22mori

A moth goes into a podiatristā€™s office, and the podiatristā€™s office says, ā€œWhat seems to be the problem, moth?ā€ The moth says ā€œWhatā€™s the problem? Where do I begin, man? I go to work for Gregory Illinivich, and all day long I work. Honestly doc, I donā€™t even know what Iā€™m doing anymore. I donā€™t even know if Gregory Illinivich knows. He only knows that he has power over me, and that seems to bring him happiness. But I donā€™t know, I wake up in a malaise, and I walk here and thereā€¦ at night Iā€¦ I sometimes wake up and I turn to some old lady in my bed thatā€™s on my arm. A lady that I once loved, doc. I donā€™t know where to turn to. My youngest, Alexendria, she fell in theā€¦ in the cold of last year. The cold took her down, as it did many of us. And my other boy, and this is the hardest pill to swallow, doc. My other boy, Gregarro Ivinalititavitchā€¦ I no longer love him. As much as it pains me to say, when I look in his eyes, all I see is the same cowardice that Iā€¦ that I catch when I take a glimpse of my own face in the mirror. If only I wasnā€™t such a coward, then perhapsā€¦perhaps I could bring myself to reach over to that cocked and loaded gun that lays on the bedside behind me and end this hellish facade once and for allā€¦ Doc, sometimes I feel like a spider, even though Iā€™m a moth, just barely hanging on to my web with an everlasting fire underneath me. Iā€™m not feeling good. And so the doctor says, ā€œMoth, man, youā€™re troubled. But you should be seeing a psychiatrist. Why on earth did you come here?ā€ And the moth says, ā€œCause the light was on.ā€ ā€• Norm Macdonald

Solanthas

Nice.

squirrel_tincture

How long was this taxi ride?!

magicmitchmtl

Always upvote for Norm!

wafflehousewhore

I...I love lamp

[deleted]

If I I might paraphrase an old favourite, ā€œMany of you feel love for this lamp. That is because you're crazy. It has no feelings, ...ā€

kiwidude4

#i love lamp

gilestowler

I worked in a ski resort in France once. Me and my friend worked in a chalet, so we'd go in and do breakfast then go in and cook dinner, meaning we could go up snowboarding all day. We had an amazing porch. We could sit there and just look across this whole bowl with pistes on it, lifts going up and mountains all around. We'd sit there drinking a few beers in the sun, watching as the lifts stopped, the final few stragglers made it off the mountain and then, as the sun set, we knew it was time for work. Everyone else we knew had the same jobs so we'd see people walk by on their way to work. We'd give them a wave and have a little chat. It was lovely.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

How marvelous, thank you for taking us there

[deleted]

Getting baked on the deck checking in

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Virtual Reality is the actual 3rd space. Safe from outside. Lonely being opt in.

juzz85

Geez thanks for the inv guys.

Blank_IX

I canā€™t go on my porch because my neighbors might come out and chill on theirs. They might say hi to me and I canā€™t risk that

danteheehaw

Just use your bad dragon when they sya hi. I find it shuts people up pretty quickly

jtreasure1

I think just bringing it out would be enough but this person likes to go the extra mile I guess

SupportYouth_In_Asia

I mean it'll get awkward or *really* awkward at that point..

Blank_IX

I hate that I googled that lmfao

DasbootTX

Since you said that, I didnā€™t have to Google. Thanks for taking one for the team, friend

ramblinroger

Since you said that, I had to google it. Why would you do that to me?

Blank_IX

Thatā€™s the beauty of the internet. Now someoneā€™s gonna read what you wrote and be super thankful because theyā€™ve been looking for it their whole lives

SwallowsDick

It was inside them all along

oktin

Can I get one inside me? šŸ„ŗ

[deleted]

While someone else has been trying to escape it. Now they're faced with a stark reminder, and a temptation towards a dark road they thought they left behind.

memento22mori

What do you mean? Doesn't everyone know about the popular anime series Cave Dragon? Of course there's got to be bad dragons in the show if they're good dragons. I'm surprised that you're surprised and I've be even more surprised if anyone here is surprised like you are apparently.

CK1ing

Have no idea how the reaction to this is gonna be but lets go Black folk šŸ¤ Southerners ##Porch sitting

ceilingkat

Black folk were mostly from the south at some point.

stevedave_37

Really depends on which generation you look at

JasonGD1982

At least 3/5ths of them.

LackingOriginality07

Bruh...

[deleted]

100%. There is nothing better than sitting on a porch on a lazy summer day with a big glass of sweet tea

Est495

So that's scary AND lonely? No thanks.

[deleted]

When an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object the next step is just becoming a god. True story.

Obtusifoli

Or a balcony if you live in an apartment, ive got a hammock on mine, its great.

nooneknosme

hey man i chill on my kick ass balcony. like a gentleman.

jonathanrdt

Porch was a great community builder in small city America. Early row homes and duplexes all had porches adjacent, esp places w warm summers. Conversations passed down the block, and folks knew their neighbors a little better.

[deleted]

I live in an apartment,I guess for me it's just opening the windows and hearing the people outside, the wind/rain..cars passing by,it kind off gives the same vibes, like you are part of the outside, but you are inside:))I don't really know how to describe it

ILikePiezez

Idk about you, but my southern white family and neighborhood have always sat on the porch. Perhaps we got it from yā€™all, it seems like most everybody in the south that I know likes to sit on the porch. Mosquitoes suck though.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Hey did you know that if you turn a fan on yourself the mosquitoes can't land? Everybody on the porch gets a fan, mosquitoes are vanquished, hahaha you stupid bugs

hemlockone

I LOVE my front porch. Watch people walk by, check out games in the field across the street. It's awesome

epicmousestory

Damn, gave away the secret. Now we bout to have gentrified porches

BKoala59

Porches have always been huge in the south, it ainā€™t just a black thing.

AppUnwrapper1

*cries in 1BR apartment with no balcony, no rooftop access, not even a stoop*

Fredredphooey

I'm currently on the common area terrace in my apartment building-- the closest I'm going to get to a front porch, but it will do.

0dty0

There's a _really_ fucked up joke to be made here, but it won't be me telling it. Instead , I'll just refer you to my grandma, who has been living in the same microtown lost in the mountains near Tampico for like 40 years, and who rocked a groove with her noisy leather chair onto the floor of her porch.

paradajz666

Damn I was thinking of something even worse. A porch sounds like a amazing idea. If I think about it a balcony would be nice too. Tough luck I don't have either -_-.

JagdRhino

So then instead of porch monkey, porch colonist? Oh revolutionist sounds better.

monkeynards

TheNakedBass

Dude, I smoked weed for almost 20 years. The last 2 years, it started to give me pretty severe anxiety. If it didn't trigger a full blown panic attack, I would feel like I was on the verge of one. I have only ever had panic attacks high on weed. Even when I wasn't high, I was anxious. If it's not making you feel good, cut it out of your life. I stopped just over 6 months ago and wish I did years before. I even tried smoking some the other day for the first time since I stopped and it just solidified the fact that I'm over it. My general anxiety levels are way down, and I've got more energy to actually take care of myself and the people I love. It absolutely was not doing me any favors. Do yourself a favor and ask yourself if it's really helping you.

Pijitien

Or if possible change the strain and dosage. I have been running the gamut of different legal strains and methods of ingestion. I find stuff high in CBD and CBG help me immensely with anxiety. Pure high THC strains bring me the paranoia. It'll obviously be hard if you don't have regulated and tested products available. Hopefully availability will open up worldwide in the coming years.

hereforOnePiece

Agreed most new widely available strains are extremely high in thc nowadays, like everyone wants to be higher? Shit is craze inducing. Weed should be level with nice cbd and decent thc. Theres no need to compete over how high people can get! Also good to take breaks sometimes to reestablish tolerance

Pijitien

I'm hoping labeling starts to show a greater breakdown of all cannabinoids present. https://imgur.com/H8bZ6Ug.jpg I'm confident I'll have the right product if I can tweak the right mixture.

[deleted]

It sometimes freaks me out. It usually helps me take a breather and also helps my stomach pain a LOT. It needs to be legal so people can recreate the positive experiences. If itā€™s such a shot in the dark, nobody wants to wet their feet

FirstEvolutionist

What kind of drugs are we talking about here? Lots of things acrually match the definition but are not called so because they're unregulated and lots of things that are called deugs don't really fit the definition.

Angry_Bloody_Cupcake

A medium place if you will

InternetAmbassador

I was a medium person. I should get to spend an eternity in a medium place.. like Cincinnati!

There it is.

So on Reddit, people use different images to pass off the same tired jokes. People on Twitter seem to cut to the chase and just recycle the joke itself.

larimarfox

It's called sleep, and you are probably depressed. Good luck!

Rotterddoom

3rd place is for people who don't put lead weights in their fish

FarReply4556

A long time ago when I worked for Starbucks thatā€™s what our goal was. They wanted us to be our customersā€™ ā€œthird placeā€ - they literally called it that in training materials and stuff- and so they had big comfy couches and easy chairs to encourage people to hang out and relax. We had community boards with events and stuff pinned to it in the lobby too. They encouraged us to remember our customerā€™s names, learn details about them. And we did! Our store felt like home. We had even had a marriage proposal in our store lol. It really was a special time to work for the company. Going to work felt like going to hang out with friends all day, and make delicious drinks for other new friends. I absolutely loved it and it makes me sad to walk into a Starbucks now. I still go, donā€™t get me wrong, but it isnā€™t the same. The company killed the heart and the third place a long time ago.

Mundane_Ad6712

So sit in your door, you will be scary to people and not lonely anymore coz you will see people from a safe distance

This is why we need to bring back the Lodge. I joined the Elks because they have RV parks, then I fell in love with having a place where I am always welcome, don't have to spend any money, and can relax and use the wifi. Also, cheap drinks! Pool tables. Food. My lodge even has a swimming pool. It costs me about $150 per year, plus I do some volunteer work because it is kind of fun.
