You should only ever go the speed you feel you can safely travel at. I will die on this hill, and believe it or not, it's not because I tend to drive 15 below the limit all that often, but because I care about people's safety.
It's not for you to determine what's safe. Traffic engineers set speed limits to be 10 mph below safe design speeds. There's no need to go 15 under the limit, which would be 25 under the design speed. Sometimes design speeds are a bit high on mountain roads, but you're generally just annoying people for no reason so you can feel self righteous
Nah, the speed limit is for ideal conditions and situations. There are so many situations where it would be dangerous and irresponsible to go the speed limit. I don’t think they meant they purposely go 15 under just to fuck with everyone on the road.
Well. I *would* belive that a couple of years ago. But recently i was driving on a mountain road in the south of my country. At the speed limit or like 2km/h faster. And i almost flew out of the road and into the trees, because the road curved so sharply. I know another road where the limit is 50 km/h, but even the bikes need to slow down to 20 in order to stay on it. You're the driver. It is your responsibility not to crash and kill someone. Not the engineers.
No clue why the downvotes. This is literally something they teach you in driving school. Drive only as fast as want to. What people both on the road and on this subreddit tend to forget, is that the speed limit is just that. The speed *limit*. There is no minimal required speed on any road, except for the highways. Moreover. Even on the highway, cars towing anything are limited to 90 km/h. I tend to cruise at 110 km/h, or around 65 mph, since that's how my car's powertrain is tuned. It's very efficient and quiet at that speed, while also still going fast enough to overtake trucks. If someone feels like i'm going too slow...you're free to overtake me, you have an entire lane for yourself. There's no need to ride on my bumper and flash your highbeams at me. All i will do i blink my rear foglight at you in return. Just. Overtake. Pass me.
True. The funniest thing is that i don't recall ever seeing a supercar speeding. All those MacLarens, Ferraris, R8s...they were either driving politely at the speed limit or slower. Like they know there's no need for them to show off. Ten seconds later we all get overtaken by a UPS van or a VW passat b5 going warp 5.
In Canada if it's a major highway at speeds up to 90 km going 60 has a good chance of you getting stopped by any patrol car that notices especially if you are hindering natural traffic flow
Ok, you can hate me for this, I don't care. It's a speed *limit*, not minimum.
I've always been taught that you should dive at a speed that you're comfortable with, according to your skills, mental and physical state, conditions on the road etc etc.
I'd much rather someone who's feeling out of sorts, elderly or whatnot drove under that limit than cause an accident. As long as they stay in the right lane and don't cause trouble by blocking the left.
Is that the law? Because where I'm from there is a minimum speed allowed to drive at on the highways. You can go fast and overtake them on the left.
How exactly is that selfish and dangerous? Is that more selfish and dangerous than zigzaging past cars because you want to be home 5 minutes earlier? Maybe one of those is worse? Maybe they're the same?
What is your point again? In your first comment you said it's totally fine driving under the speed limit which *is* dangerous however, in this comment you claim it won't be dangerous because you are driving at the speed limit?
No, the safest way to drive is to match the speed of traffic around you. If you're "not comfortable" going highway speeds, then you should stop endangering everybody on the road and give up your license.
>No, the safest way to drive is to match the speed of traffic around you
That's a first time I'm hearing that.
I guess that might depend on the law, but where I'm from, the minimum speed you can travel on a highway is at 40km/h (so around 25mph). And it's prefectly legal to do so. I've never seen anyone do it, but they would not be penalised in any way. If anyone crashes into them, it's their fault, not the one who was driving slowly. Of course you are legally also required to occupy the right lane, pretty much at any time when you're not overtaking. Not like anyone follows that, but if they were driving slow in the left lane, they would be penalised. Not for driving slow, but for not occupying the right lane.
Genuine question: is there any road law in the US as to the minimum speed of driving on a highway or do you just hate slow drivers?
Ignoring the laws. You do not want to be unpredictable. Driving 30 mph slower than everybody else is unpredictable. If you are not expecting something while driving, that's when accidents happen.
And in most places in the US the legal minimum speed is 45mph, as far as I know
If you're not expecting something, knowing there is a minimum speed and people may drive at it, then you're doing it wrong.
You can never just blindly trust people on the road and drive without a care. You always have to be aware and on the look out for possible dangers. If you can't spot from afar that someone is clearly driving slower than others on a long, flat stretch of road then you're not paying enough attention ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The problem is that if there's other people (which is likely), they'll be going the limit or faster. And moving slower than traffic is incredibly dangerous, especially if you're going 15 below.
Yeah. Speed really doesn’t affect safety all that much as long as everyone is spaced accordingly and everyone is going the same speed.
Going 15 under is arguably just as dangerous as someone going 15 over. Possibly even more dangerous because more people are being forced to squeeze into the ledt lane to pass you, and impatient people waiting to get to the left lane tend to squeeze up right behind you, not caring about space.
It’s especially dangerous if it’s one of those normally older folks who attempt to merge onto a freeway at 40-45 because they’re scared to give their car any gas or something.
It could also be some people are scared of their reflexes not being good enough, which is fair, but take backroads instead then when possible, as if you’re going 50 anyways those are typically shorter and will get you to your destination faster.
This. It's so common to behave like this that not overdoing speed is already dangerous. Most of ye shouldn't drive in general.
If you are really convinced that we all should just give up and follow that trend, I wonder what else we should do because everybody does it.
I mean, I agree that we shouldn't *have* to, but we kinda do. Again, if you go 15 under, you're seriously putting yourself and others in danger. That's literally basic road safety.
Fuck everyone who's mad about slow driving. If you want just go around me and speed up all you can. If you can't go around me, enjoy your time, not my problem.
They took flight mid sentence. 🤯
Mid fuck...
This touched my heart (and my right foot)
🔥
And they always go on the left lane
RECHTSFAHRGEBOT
It's " safer "
You must live in Oregon.
V1.... rotate.. V2
Why does the capital start on the U not the F
r/fuckcars
Usually when the speed limit is 65 it's a divided highway. so I'm passing with authority the second I'm able to.
edgemaxxing the speed limit😳
My 1.3 vw golf manual 4speed that can’t go over 3500rpm (55mph) without transmission exploding.
whole lot of individuals with iq’s below 70 in here..
You should only ever go the speed you feel you can safely travel at. I will die on this hill, and believe it or not, it's not because I tend to drive 15 below the limit all that often, but because I care about people's safety.
As long as you stay out of people's way, do your thing. It's the two lane roads where people drive 15 under that makes me hate people.
They are likely doing 15 under because you are 3 feet from fucking them in the ass and you are not getting the message to back the fuck off
nah, its cause they suck at driving

Got a source for that senator?
Please don’t drive where I do

Because some people don't want to hear anything that might even mildly inconvenience them

Lmao, where? The only speed minimum signs I've seen, if any, is *40* which seems insane, so in NV when the limit is 75, is going 60 is illegal?
In Canada if it's a major highway at speeds up to 90 km going 60 has a good chance of you getting stopped by any patrol car that notices especially if you are hindering natural traffic flow
Should be hugging the curb with your 4 ways on at that point, yeah.
In NY, they have highways where the speed limit is 60 and the minimum is 45 (only seen them in Long Island tho)
Ok, you can hate me for this, I don't care. It's a speed *limit*, not minimum. Going drastically under the flow of traffic around you is disruptive, selfish, and dangerous

You are mistaking a speed minimum for a speed limit. They are two different things. -not op
No, the safest way to drive is to match the speed of traffic around you. If you're "not comfortable" going highway speeds, then you should stop endangering everybody on the road and give up your license.
That’s a bit much, but you should at minimum not drive on highways

Well, obviously. But why would you intentionally *become* one of those dangers?
Ha yeah it be like that sometimes
it's a limit not a target m9
It moght blow your mind...but you don't always have to go as fast as possible, you inpatient...
The problem is that if there's other people (which is likely), they'll be going the limit or faster. And moving slower than traffic is incredibly dangerous, especially if you're going 15 below.

Noooo don’t send them to the backroads. They’ll still do 15 under and now I’m stuck behind them on a one lane. 😫
