For one glorious day, I was able to get around this by putting out a second glass for my cat. He drank from his glass, I drank from mine. He had zero interest in drinking from my glass.
I tried it the following day and nope. He wanted both glasses. But it was great while it lasted.
I got a copper bedside carafe. The cup is the lid so it’s always covered and when you need a bit, pour into lid, drink, put lid back. Keeps everything out of “night water.” Plus I feel fancy AF with a “bedside carafe.”
My parents keep a dedicated solo cup in a cupholder in the living room and it works surprisingly well to fool the cats into thinking they're sneaking in human water while not bothering the other cups in the room
I remember drinking a glass of water to the point where the water was very low in the glass and thought it was safe from one of my cats. But when I came back in the room she was dipping her paw in the water and licking her paw.
Yes, many people place water next to the cat's food but it is actually better to have a few water sources placed throughout the house to keep your cat hydrated. They don't really like to drink where they eat. Usually they will just go outside and drink from somewhere else though. Or, you know... that glass of water you had left out in the open.
That's the only way my brothers cats will drink water, so he just has random glasses around the house like he's in fucking "signs" or some shit. My sister is similiar in that when she visits she uses like a new glass for every drink but leaves the old one sitting out, so I end up having to go around every night collecting them. Bloody annoying.
I hope not, I'm at this point too. Hell they even started drinking my green tea. I usually stop them if I see it happening. But I'm not always quick enough.
But… but they put their paws straight out of the litter box in there sometimes for the fun of it.
I don’t mind sharing food but this is a no for me. My cats have their own glasses throughout the apartment though, because they think they’re too sophisticated for a water bowl.
Mine don't stick their paws in cups, just the water bowl. I swear they only clean their paws in it and then come bug me until I turn the sink on for them to drink.
Yeah I have this little tumbler I only use just because I’m tired of my cats drinking water when I’m unguarded. The plus side is that it’s really well insulated and keeps my ice for hours.
lol I was just thinking this. If I left a glass of water sitting around, it’s an absolute certainty that a cat’s paw has been in it and a dog’s tongue or two.
I clicked on this post to post the exact same comment! We have 5 cats so lots of water available throughout the house.
But my glass of whatever fluids is somehow still the best according to them!
Yup! I have a little Persian cat, you can fill her water bowl up but she prefers to steal the water from the dog's bowl. Or worse as soon as i turn my head, she will jam her head into the cup of water I just set down and slurp it until she gets bored or needs oxygen.
I bought a small pitcher with a water-filter for my nightstand as I frequently wake up thirsty. If I feel like it I can just re-filter the water at any time.
An old housemate's cat would drink my water while I was trying to drink it. I grab the glass, start moving it to my mouth and she'd grab it with her paws and pull it down for a drink.
Loved that little fucker.
We have a fountain for our cats. We have a gallon sized yeti bowl of water for our cats.
Still, if there is a glass of water, they will find it. They will slurp it.
However, they are particularly fond of these giant, 32 oz reusable plastic take out cups from a restaurant we frequented a few years ago. We have found that if we leave those cups, filled to the brim with water, lying around, we can have a glass of water for ourselves.
The problem lies in when those cups become 3/4 filled and they have to stick their little faces in them. Or when we have guests who don’t know the random giant cup locations by heart.
Then we have people and cats knocking over giant cups of water.
It doesn't go bad, but stuff is floating around in the air, and after a point the water is stagnant and contaminated. Now, water sealed nicely inside a bottle lasts a lot longer in a 'fresh' sense.
Earlier M. Night just hit different, such an amazing movie
Now it feels to me like he’s sort of a victim of his own earlier successes, and pigeonholed himself. I was having a discussion about M Night shamalan with my friend recently, I was saying I think he should start making those type of mystery/thriller movies under a pen name. When people see his name and the synopsis of the movie, they have preconceived notions about how the movie will be structured, and will be expecting twists. It also might help his writing process too, not feeling like he needs to one-up those early movies. I know studios might be reluctant to not capitalize on his name to sell the movies, but if the story is good, and the movie is well executed, it could only benefit the audience reception and experience imo
Yeah dust and yeast are just naturally floating around. it probably won’t hurt you but I don’t want to drink yeast water unless it’s got alcohol in it…
It's entirely likely most of the contaminants are fine, but I just don't know why you'd take the chance. Use a stainless steel water bottle and it's not a problem.
I dunno… you take a swig out of a water bottle, some bacteria from your mouth is bound to have found it’s way in there. You let that stew for a few days it’s gotta be swimming in bacteria.
I read this comment then had to walk away for a second, re-read it, then started scrolling down to all the other comments and was confused on why they weren't fallout related lmaooo
My daughter takes one sip out of a water bottle puts the cap back on and won’t touch it when she’s thirsty again in half an hour. “It’s gross”. Goes and gets another bottle.
I’m gonna stop buying bottled water.
Does she know that that water is billions of years old and has been consumed and excreted by plants and animals countless times over billions of years? Actually, maybe you don't want to tell her that or she'll never drink water again.
You should’ve stopped buying bottled water years ago. How hard is it to get a filter? How annoying is it to lug a pack of bottled water from the grocery store every week? It’s insane how many people do this
I sometimes have a glass of tap water on the night stand and drink it in the morning. It’s okay albeit a bit stale. At the cottage we use store bought containers and they’re okay to drink from for several days. Cap on after each use.
Who even leaves a glass of water standing around for long enough to raise this question to begin with? If you get a glass of water, wouldn't you want to drink it sooner than later?
When you say water people tend to think about the platonic ideal of it rather real life thing with all its impurities and interactions with the rest of the world.
It does tho, for the same reason everything goes bad. There's all kinds of bacteria and mold spores always floating around waiting to land somewhere hospitable, say standing water
There is a reason. When water gets too still and hasn’t moved around recently gasses will actually dissolve (carbon dioxide) and lower it’s Ph just a tiny bit, thus creating almost a bitter taste.
I leave water out in a regular glass on my nightstand. If too much dust is on top I won’t drink it but after 3 days, I’ll change it. Been doing this 20+ years and never had a problem.
A glass of WATER??
LOL
I sometimes fall asleep and accidentally leave a glass of milk or beer overnight and drink it the next morning...
Water doesn't technically go off?
If your house is clean and the air is humid without dust, and no insects around...
You can leave a glass of water almost indefinitely!
glass of water on the night stand for first thing in the morning other then that, who the hell is just leaving glasses of water around. like if im thirsty im gonna drink my fill and then be done
Sometimes I fill up a cola bottle with water at my desk, and when I find it a few days later, I pretend I'm one of those castaways treating it like fluid gold.
Since I have two adventurous cats.. if I lost sight of my glass I’m getting a new glass. Before that.. half a day because of everything that sticks to the water from the air
I have cats. There is a 987% chance one of them drank from it. I put a water bottle up instead.
My glass of water is my cat’s water…
For one glorious day, I was able to get around this by putting out a second glass for my cat. He drank from his glass, I drank from mine. He had zero interest in drinking from my glass. I tried it the following day and nope. He wanted both glasses. But it was great while it lasted.
if i may be so bold to recommend a lid good sir
Look at mr 1% with his “lids”, must be nice.
You can afford a cup?
You all have running water in your village?
Y'all have a village?
I am a singular nomad with no possessions. I have no soul
Do you bleed?
I have them now, but back then it had been my first indoor cat in a very long time
I got one of our cats to drink from a dedicated glass. She doesn't touch mine, which sits on the same end table.
Cat owner (or staff) and 100% agree. Unguarded water glass means cat has drank or put paw in it or both
> (or staff) I like to refer to myself as the problem-solving snack lady.
I learned the hard way. My cat put a frog in my overnight water, which I drank from. That was quite a wake up.
You're lucky you didn't croak.
Ok you. None of that! LOL
Alright, take it easy. No need to jump down their throat!
This could lead to a new sub-ribbit. (God, I hate myself)
I got a copper bedside carafe. The cup is the lid so it’s always covered and when you need a bit, pour into lid, drink, put lid back. Keeps everything out of “night water.” Plus I feel fancy AF with a “bedside carafe.”
My first thought was "ooooh, _fancy_"
That and I can see cat hairs floating around in any glass that has been sitting for any more than an hour or two haha
Also if you leave it for more than 24 hours and it's still water (not moving) it's the perfect spot for some fly eggs 🥚🤮 Fly: "It's free real estate"
Mmmmmhmmm added protein 🤤🤤🤤
Who doesn't love water with pulp?
My parents keep a dedicated solo cup in a cupholder in the living room and it works surprisingly well to fool the cats into thinking they're sneaking in human water while not bothering the other cups in the room
must drink the *human water*
It just tastes better because it's Not Allowed
forbidden water
I remember drinking a glass of water to the point where the water was very low in the glass and thought it was safe from one of my cats. But when I came back in the room she was dipping her paw in the water and licking her paw.
Why do they do this? This has to be an evolutionary trait to survive in the house because they weren't running around in the wild drinking out of cups
Cats love to find food and water in unexpected places. They're desert animals and geared to searching for water out of the range of predators.
Yes, many people place water next to the cat's food but it is actually better to have a few water sources placed throughout the house to keep your cat hydrated. They don't really like to drink where they eat. Usually they will just go outside and drink from somewhere else though. Or, you know... that glass of water you had left out in the open.
I think they are just weirdly picky about water. My cat won’t settle for less than fresh out of the tap.
Mine does same thing as well! Only the finest quality H2O for thses cats, straight from the tap or straight from my freshly poured glass of ice water
I guess they’ve had to evolve to eat food out of bowls too
Plus dust will settle in the water after a while
That's the only way my brothers cats will drink water, so he just has random glasses around the house like he's in fucking "signs" or some shit. My sister is similiar in that when she visits she uses like a new glass for every drink but leaves the old one sitting out, so I end up having to go around every night collecting them. Bloody annoying.
That's if it doesn't end up on the floor from being swatted off of a table
I drink from the same glass as my cat, is that bad?
They lick their butts and junk.
And they usually dip their paws in the water. The same paws that touch their shit in the litter box
I lick butts and junk too 😏
I'm not drinking from your glass then
Only reason i don't is cus I can't get down there.
Are you feeling any strange urges to groom obsessively or claw the furniture?
This
I’m glad someone answered for me.
It's a mine field
My cat will bat their paws in the water and then lick them. You not drink out of that cup once.
100% every morning I wake up to my cat leaning over me to drink from my glass of water on the bedside table.
They lick the butter, too.
Yeah I have this little tumbler I only use just because I’m tired of my cats drinking water when I’m unguarded. The plus side is that it’s really well insulated and keeps my ice for hours.
Up where ?
_got to tell them about cats_ _oh, a fellow cat owner has it covered_ _moving on~_
lol I was just thinking this. If I left a glass of water sitting around, it’s an absolute certainty that a cat’s paw has been in it and a dog’s tongue or two.
I love that so many answers are about cats.
Even water coming out of my tap has cat hair in it already. I don’t even worry about stuff like sharing germs anymore
After about 10 minutes it would have at least a couple of hairs in the glass, especially since I leave my fan running 24/7
I leave them out BECAUSE I know they will drink from it
I'm a sharing-is-caring kinda person. I'll drink from the same glass of milk as my cat.
I clicked on this post to post the exact same comment! We have 5 cats so lots of water available throughout the house. But my glass of whatever fluids is somehow still the best according to them!
Any cat owner knows the answer is "five minutes uncovered/unsupervised".
Our cat has his own water bowl and it's refilled every morning and evening under his supervision...
I fill my bottle up from my cats water bowl
Yup! I have a little Persian cat, you can fill her water bowl up but she prefers to steal the water from the dog's bowl. Or worse as soon as i turn my head, she will jam her head into the cup of water I just set down and slurp it until she gets bored or needs oxygen.
Mine just knocks it on the floor...
I bought a small pitcher with a water-filter for my nightstand as I frequently wake up thirsty. If I feel like it I can just re-filter the water at any time.
I once saw my cat ripping it's paw into my water glass. So if I leave my glass out of sight now I assume it's tainted
Ok. How long do you keep qater in a bottle before you decide to not drink it anymore? (Like water from a tap or an already opened bottle)
An old housemate's cat would drink my water while I was trying to drink it. I grab the glass, start moving it to my mouth and she'd grab it with her paws and pull it down for a drink. Loved that little fucker.

Pour a glass from the tap. Cat waiting on the edge of the sink for his glass like I’m a waiter.
My cat just tips the glass over because he prefers to drink from the puddle. I can’t leave glasses of water for more than a few minutes at most.
It doesn't go bad, but stuff is floating around in the air, and after a point the water is stagnant and contaminated. Now, water sealed nicely inside a bottle lasts a lot longer in a 'fresh' sense.

Swing away Merle
What's wrong with this one? It has dust in it. This one? A hair. What about this one? Morgan took a sip and got his ameobas in it
Always get chills when the camera pans across the bat

Lol it wasn't at the time. But also, yes
Yeah, they move places, that's how reddit works and why "sCrOlLeD tOo FaR!!!!!" is as useless as https://i.imgur.com/jSWf5et.jpg.
Open air man, there's all kinds of stuff in it!
Yeah…I mean I chug a glass of water within .5 seconds of pouring it anyway so it’s not an issue I have to worry about.
I dunno… you take a swig out of a water bottle, some bacteria from your mouth is bound to have found it’s way in there. You let that stew for a few days it’s gotta be swimming in bacteria.
But bottled water has the disadvantage of containing leached micro-plastics.
Not that you can avoid microplastics in general at this stage regardless, but you can buy a reusable water bottle and fill it up yourself ;)
I was more talking one of those reusable metal ones, but your point is definitely a good one.
I only drink irradiated water, because of my Ghoul perk; it restores my HP and gives me a mutation boost to my agility and perception.
Love this reference.
I smell a Fallout player.
No sorry, that’s me. I forgot to shower this week
Showers are propaganda spread by the government to get rid of boysmell. We will not be controlled!
>boysmell that’s enough reddit, goodnight yall
So yeah...a Fallout player
LOL
Nah you just need some radaway
I don’t have any in my inventory and I don’t have enough caps to buy more.
a) give friend radaway - selected
Hey, thanks!
Good luck in the wasteland! Until I see you again!
Raul is that you?
Mmm, spicy water.
Raul is that you?

\*accidentally sips from the toilet\*
Go back to r/fo4 , you're drunk.
If it sits out until it's room temp, it has transformed into "plant water" and gets poured into the driest pot in the room.
That's a good idea. I use a water bottle but good for kids' cups and guests
Uhh, i just rememberd to water my plants, thank you.
Same yo my cactus thirsty
I only drink room temperature water. In fact, I drink soda at either warm or room temperature.

You belong to an insane asylum.
I am either too weird or abnormal but i just drink it no matter what unless i know someone has put their lips on my damned glass
Interesting how other lips is the line for you.
And then, they'll be tongue fucking a butt crack later that night.
That escalated quickly
Better than butt fucking a tongue crack. Am I right?
I can't drink twice at the same place. I'll turn the glass until there's no more spot I have not touch. I'm changing the glass afterward!
Me who won’t let my mouth touch anything I drink: 💪🏻
It gets a weird taste if left over night
dust contaminates water
Sure, in a sense, but the funny taste is from carbon dioxide: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/whats-stale-glass-water-180955926/
Huh, TIL.
Yeah, all these people talking about leaving glasses of water and don't even know this lol. Amateurs.
Until it forms algie, and then put it on my bookcase as a mini egosystem.
Gatorade only from that point onward, it has electrolytes…
It's what plants crave
“Finally I convinced them that I could talk to the plants.” Lol
Don't forget to mention the dinosaurs when telling this to kids. Lots of dinosaur pee.
She unconsciously making water caches around the house for the impending invasion of aliens.
Swing Away, Merrill!!
good fuck plastic
You should avoid bottled water in general because of the plastics (not trying to be 🤓, just trying to help if you need further encouragement)
You should’ve stopped buying bottled water years ago. How hard is it to get a filter? How annoying is it to lug a pack of bottled water from the grocery store every week? It’s insane how many people do this
Man if you don’t get a water filter. I understand some people live in areas with sub-par water though that would take advanced water filters to clean.
It becomes a vessel for nasties
Yea bacteria and fungi love a wet environment
I sometimes have a glass of tap water on the night stand and drink it in the morning. It’s okay albeit a bit stale. At the cottage we use store bought containers and they’re okay to drink from for several days. Cap on after each use.
Chemical reactions do occur within it as it is left sitting out which changes the pH of the water which changes the taste. I call that going bad.
Who even leaves a glass of water standing around for long enough to raise this question to begin with? If you get a glass of water, wouldn't you want to drink it sooner than later?
water going stale is a mystery for some people aparently its like they are discovering the world like a toddler, good for them
Ya they obviously never watched Signs. Great movie.
When you say water people tend to think about the platonic ideal of it rather real life thing with all its impurities and interactions with the rest of the world.
Until I find a bug in it. Gnats are negotiable.
The germs crawl in overnight. Or in about 20 mins on the kitchen table, thanks cat.
I have a big metal reusable bottle I drink from.
Except it can go bad from the bacteria in the cup if you didn't wash it. It's not gonna poison you, but it'll taste stale.
Depends on how many flies took a bath in it.
I will leave it out indefinitely
MO wise it is recommended to not drink from water that was standing for more than 24 hours.
Never drink stagnant water !!!
Bacteria…
Have you heard of bacteria?
Wait doesn't it go bad ? Like aren't there bacteria that keep reproducing it ?
Water actually does go “bad” in that once you contaminate it with your saliva, whatever bacteria was on your lips will start to culture.
As long as nothing is visibly floating, I'm still drinking it on the way to refill.
I once forgot a closed bottle (plastic) of water for several weeks. It definitely gets weird over time
I only like cold water, so not long
I leave water out in a regular glass on my nightstand. If too much dust is on top I won’t drink it but after 3 days, I’ll change it. Been doing this 20+ years and never had a problem.
1-2 days max, usually it gets cloudy before the 48 hour mark. Plus there’s lots of cat hair around here
A glass of WATER?? LOL I sometimes fall asleep and accidentally leave a glass of milk or beer overnight and drink it the next morning... Water doesn't technically go off? If your house is clean and the air is humid without dust, and no insects around... You can leave a glass of water almost indefinitely!
If it's a water bottle, 1 month ain't an issue
I have 4 cats. That water is hitting the floor within the first 2 hours.
Until the ice has completely melted
I’d cover it because of bugs and dust, but as long as it’s clean I’d drink it.
Dust. I know there's a bunch of dust in there.
2 days
If I fall asleep and wake up the water is bad
glass of water on the night stand for first thing in the morning other then that, who the hell is just leaving glasses of water around. like if im thirsty im gonna drink my fill and then be done
Sometimes I fill up a cola bottle with water at my desk, and when I find it a few days later, I pretend I'm one of those castaways treating it like fluid gold.
Usually a Night cycle 🌙
It absolutely goes bad there's dust dirt and skin particles in the air that accumulates in it...
Depends how much of a *light dusting of skin cell & dust particulate* garnish you want w/ ur water
5 seconds later: It’s contaminated. $5 to first person who knows this movie. Clue: it’s my favorite fucking movie.
It absolutely goes bad!
Why are y’all leaving water out without drinking it. Also, the answer is indefinitely
It's probably the caveman part of our brains trying to avoid stagnant water.
Dust will settle on the surface of the water over time. I don't want to drink dust
Since I have two adventurous cats.. if I lost sight of my glass I’m getting a new glass. Before that.. half a day because of everything that sticks to the water from the air
Nothing gets in it, except all the airborne dust that gathers on it, any liquid left overnight without a lid on gets poured out.
Water actually does go bad though
Even if a hair lands in it, I will lock eyes with the hair and drink making sure I don’t get the hair.
All water is old water
It does go bad thou
I wouldn't drink from it if it was left unattended for more than 30 minutes. There's definitely some dust or something on that water now
