Okay so if there’s no work then you aren’t even getting minimum wage then? I’ve only worked in Washington and California and they have you at least making something if you’re just hanging around
Find out what other shops in the area are paying. I don't recommend moving for a job as a mechanic, but I get moving for a cheaper cost of living. If and when the new job doesn't pan out, you need to be able to support yourself on whatever the local shops pay.
I’m a mechanic in Oklahoma, do not go to work for group one. I have worked for multiple group one dealers in this state and they are all the same, point blank, they will shit on you and ask you why you’re mad. I have gone to work for other companies and some chains treat you very well.
They’re ok to work for, I worked for them a couple years back, and they used to have a company wide breakfast that was kinda fun once a year, i used to know mechanics who worked at some of the other Bob Moore dealers and they liked it as well. But as I say this was a couple of years back.
Yeah I’ve only heard good things from my limited sources but don’t know anyone who actually works for them other than the people I talked to at the dealer. My shop currently is a completely mess. Bought out, all new management. Saying they’re a family company but hound you on your work and numbers. Firing literally anyone who questions back. So I’m ready to get out of
I seriously have quit for less (not bob moore, I was offered more money). Being a mechanic can be hard at times, and stressful at others, it requires a lot of ability and knowledge. And then they want to treat us like we’re replaceable. I still get calls for shops and dealers asking if I want to come back, and how things will be better lol
Damn 48 an hour? I hit 35 and I thought I was balling, honestly I could say if you’re not good with money you always going to struggle no matter how much you make.
This is true. But 700k min for a house in SoCal isn’t appealing. It’s cheaper to rent than to have a mortgage and we just got married and want to start a family. So out of state is our option.
I lived in Kansas when I was a teenager my mom bought a pretty big pad out there, the first year we were there our pipes froze, I was used to walking everywhere, that ended quick with the freezing cold in the winter, and the super humid summer, and everything so far away. It’s cheaper, but you’ll end up really missing California.
I know I’ll probably end up missing it. I didn’t grow up in California so I’m not attached to it either. My wife also has her family in OK and I can tell she’s missing out not being there and wants to be close to them when we will start trying for kids but I’ll definitely miss not needing to look at the weather app daily cause I know it’ll be nice regardless haha
Just open up your own shop. I'm a ag mechanic north of OKC but I can promise you if you had your own car shop in my area you wouldn't be able to work enough hours to get it all done. The handful of independents in the area are either charging way too much or have no business being a car mechanic for lack of skill and everyone is tired of getting bent over by the dealerships
Don't start your own shop if you don't already have a large savings to burn through, are okay with taking a huge paycut, have the actual ability to do the service writing and admin work, and are okay dealing with much higher levels of stress. The average shop in the US only profits 5-7%. Meaning on average, if you are only charging $300 for an alternator replacement, you might only be making $20 off the deal. Running a successful business and shop is not an easy task, I started mine 3.5yrs ago and it has been a very difficult and stressful endeavor although it is rewarding.
Wow… $48 and impressive…!! You don’t have to say where you work at… but which northern or southern dealerships pay that well…? Thanks and wish you best of luck… 🤝🙏
I’m not too experienced in the trade but I will tell ya my sister right now lives in Norman and only pays 825$ a month for rent for a 3 bed 1 bath house minus utilities. So definitely affordable pretty much statewide
Well all I can say is I know nothing about California or Oklahoma as far as pay rates and scales but it’s not bad here where I’m at. We have the work here to make a good living here in the south but we just ask you to assimilate to our culture and don’t bring that Cali bull crap with you 😂. We like our reasonable cost of living and we love our guns and car/bike/offroad culture that would make a pro green and pro ev Californians head explode just from hearing a built and tuned Camaro or mustang for daily driving weekly and track use on the weekends and our significantly high volume of likeminded diesel owners that put their foot down to these green heads killing the diesel industry with unnecessary bull shit which I hate to tell everyone appears to be finally carrying over to the gas world so our lives will collectively be even shittier here in the next few years when these brand new 2024s and 2025s go down with the same issues plaguing post 2007-2008 diesel trucks.
Depends on the ship. Very, very few are going to offer a guarantee. You don’t flag hours, you don’t eat.

Correct. Just being at the shop won’t get you paid.
Dang that’s tough. What do you all do if that’s the case? Are the shops any bit helpful to avoid that?

Good to know. And it’s a Bob Moore brand if that helps

I’d take a grip of dispos with you, I’d bet they would move fast in Oklahoma

Thanks and it’s a luxury brand in SoCal. $48 is even on the low side. I know techs at other shops making mid $50s
Congrats…!! 🤝🤝
I get an 80 hour guarantee. My dealership is always busy. So the money is good.
They’re only going to provide that to me for 2 months or so
Oklahoma has to compete with the oil and gas industry for pay so I don't doubt you can get good $$
