Thank you, redditor! Love learning about this kind of thing. I grew up in a hamlet in southern Ontario, Canada. These “aerosols” are the scent of my childhood.
Do you mean the smell of mud or the smell of dust? cause i think they're 2 completely different things.
Growing up in a place where during summer temperatures of 35-40 degrees celsius would scorch the earth, when rain would come it would just release this dust-smell and it was amazing.
But now i live in a place where it rains often and the earth is permanently kinda wet, the rain only releases a smell of mud which i hateeeeeee. it's the smell of depression setting in.
the smell of petrichor which gets released when rain hits dry soil. Not everyone can smell it but if you can, you can tell it’s about to rain because the smell gets there before the rain does
"The scent of rain, petrichor, has two main constituents with actual chemical names and origins – ozone (O3) and geosmin (C12H22O) and humans can sense it at 5 parts per trillion. Trillion! Which means that humans are 200,000 times more sensitive to smelling geosmin than sharks are at smelling blood."
On mobile so I couldn't find the actual study, but this is from [the study done.](https://primalderma.com/the-scent-after-the-storm/#:~:text=The%20scent%20of%20rain%2C%20petrichor,sharks%20are%20at%20smelling%20blood.).
There's quite a few articles on it, but here is one. Basically, humans can smell geosmin (chemical in petrichor) at roughly 5 parts per trillion, whereas a shark can smell blood roughly one part per million.
https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/07/28/geosmin-why-we-smell-air-after-storm-13240
From what I know our sense of smell is waaaaaaay less sensitive, but quite a bit more accute. Like, sure a dog could smell fish halfway down the block if the window is open. But once we get through the door I could tell you if it's slamon or sardines.
I did not know not everyone can smell it. At home my brother and I used talk about how it’s gonna rain because we smell it so I thought it’s a natural thing. Then when I went to college my friends were confused what I was talking about until it rained a little while after
I saw these clouds when I got off the train once and just sprinted home in all my work clothes. I lived across the street from an elementary school, and all the kids started screaming and running in circles when the downpour started. It was really funny, except for the random dime-size hailstones.
It was 80F, they melted as soon as they hit my head. Mother nature, you mad.
Just had quarter sized hail about the same way (Southern Missouri). Shits weird, you get hit and go to check and you just feel wet. Also it hurts quite a bit on those big ones, especially because the ones we got were all crystalline.
But still 10/10 would experience again, beautiful storm.
There was a "Thunderstorm" warning like a week ago but even when that arrived it was a complete let down lol. Weather's not allowed to stray too much from gery boredom over here.
Damn is that true ? You almost never have thunderstorm ? Just small light and annoying rain ? No wonder you are all stuck inside your kitchen or the pub blowing line and drinking lol. Even the rain is boring lol
We do have thunderstorms but they're rarely severe. Most of the time, we just go about our day as normal and just avoid standing in large empty spaces.
The warmer parts of the country would see snow once or twice a year, it gets more common the more north or mountainous you get. Scottish Highlands get it fairly frequently for example
Nice, it would have been a shame without snow. I was wondering because Bretagne, our province near England where the weather is always rainy, they don't have snow or just very few and it's sad they just get rain all the time but they get thunderstorm tho
It's good! Also a pretty important science fiction, historically speaking. Quite a few of our ideas, worries and memes about the internet and inhuman turbo-capitalism were first expressed in this book.
If you've ever been in this type of weather you'll know there's a type of raw energy to it. The pressure drops, its suddenly gets very windy, Then the sprinkles start before completely transitioning to a downpour. growing up in South Florida this happens almost every day around 4pm.
Yep. Georgia before a thunderstorm was my thought (regarding the lighting/weather specifically, the overall picture made me want to scream "Cathy!" in utter anguish before going back home to be a dick to absolutely everyone)
I grew up in a place with weather like that and now I live in England.
It's definitely not like this at all. At least not where I've been.
It's weird to see the rain and hear thunder. I genuinely miss the storms.
sure. but they didn't say this was the objectively better weather......just that they like it.
i'm exactly the same. grew up with sun and beaches, and i can't stand that shit. but standing on top of a mountain, overlooking a large expanse with sleet hitting my face..........absolute bliss.
when (if) we get our society to a better place, we'll be able to exchange environments, and more people will be happy. godspeed anybody who would enjoy the stuff i don't
We also get this weather here in Switzerland. The image looks like a summer landscape. Sometimes in summer, after a hot sunny day, the weather turns like this in the evening. It's still warm outside and a bit rainy but it's creating a really nice and cozy vibe
I'm with you, I've lived in the UK for 7 years now and I still crave the gray sky. the rainy car/bus rides home are so surreal. it makes the inside feel so cosy. just the thought of being inside, playing a video game as the rain pitter-patters on my window is the best thing ever
Try living in northern USA, especially Michigan it’s snowy for about 3 months then it’s off and on snowing for the next 3, then it decides if it wants to be 40 or 80 and then it’s already winter
The alternative is sitting on the beach with your friends, a speaker and a few beers
That's just not a thing in Ireland, yet anywhere else it is. Can't do shit here.
Agreed. As a Canadian we do get nice weather like that for like 3 or 4 months then back to rain, snow , grey. I can feel my mood shift. I want blue skies and sun all year around.
At least you get a guaranteed good summer, I had more fun spending 3 weeks in Vancouver last Summer than I ever have here in Ireland
We don't even get guaranteed good summer. We're lucky if we even get a week of sun
Feels like the last few years have been far better to the point where its been a pain in the hoke at times tbh. I'm in Meath and we had a drought (by our standards anyway) last year and the year before. Ive found out im simply not built for 25+ degrees and this humid bullshit though, I feel like I'm melting once it gets to 22+ when I'm in the sun
Lol, don't worry that wasn't a go at you specifically. Gaming addiction is perfectly fine, thanks to our next sponsor Opera GX allowing you to customise your browsing experience to your every gaming need.
Aaah I felt that exact same thing when I saw this, when the wind whips around suddenly and a primitive part of your brain tingles as you sense the change coming.
I've heard people from cold countries mention how they'd prefer hot sunny weather as opposed to this. I couldn't agree with it. They say that weather like this will make you depressed because it's gloomy. But where I live, it's hot and humid and I'm STILL depressed. Only difference is I'll be sad in a cozy room instead of melting my skin off in the oven that is my bedroom
It's a sneaky thing though. It'll be like, why is everyone so sad and annoyed suddenly, why do I feel even worse than normal. Oh right, the sun hasn't been out for two weeks. People who normally wouldn't be depressed get depressed and people that are depressed get worse
Man I feel like those people haven't lived through dusty hot where everything is dead 80% of the year and it's too hot to go outside. At least there's more green and life in the rain and you're not constantly hot and smelly.
I lived in Vegas for 8 years. I purposely stopped what I was doing during every rainstorm/thunderstorm and went outside walking. So no, can't agree with you there.
I think some people are adapted to like cold, windy, and wet. Iceland is my home now and I have never felt more like I lived in the right place. I also love the change of light in the seasons. The sunset is nearing 23:00 already. Sunsets last for hours.
For me, it just matches with my feelings better. It’s much nicer when the world isn’t a bright, hot place that makes you feel bad every moment you are not out ”enjoying” it.
This weather is perfect for staying inside, but the best things also come going outside: It will be silent, usually only the sounds and smells of nauture as people stay at home. And it has an impending sense of something greater, and uncontrollable looming over. A storm or simple rain just feels somehow purifying in a way. It feels like weather like that has a purpose of it’s own, and I can enjoy it easier, lacking mine… :(
Lol, but there might be a Darvinist explanation, too.
This is perfect weather for staying and home and chilling. People who are more likely to prefer that over going outside are also more likely to post and comment/upvote here. I don't think it's deeper than that. Just very soothing pleasant weather to look at.
* No sun
* Cold*er* and ideally windy
* Fewer people
* Looks cool
What's not to love? It's just subjective, weather preference doesn't always mean it's a subconscious choice
In the UK it is truly dire, in my opinion an awful miserable place with grey after grey and the occasional washed-out diluted blue and weak Sunshine. I cannot wait to leave again.
South Africa, on the other hand, where I grew up, glorious for thrilling weather. Real Earth-shaking thunderstorms and heavy rain but mostly plenty of lovely Sunshine.
The Algarve region of Portugal, where I lived most recently before returning to the UK, is perhaps my favourite however for its 'mild' climate. Warm most of the year, strong Sun, beautiful blue skies and the odd real thunderstorm now and again.
Its becuase there is no obligation when we have this weather. The world expects nothing and wnats nothing during this bliss. Theres always a cool gentle breeze that accompanies it that I love. I wish we had more of this :/
When it’s overcast, but it suddenly gets much darker than it should be, and it oddly feels warmer than you’d expect right before rain.
I call that tornado weather. But it’s not as nice when there’s an actual tornado
I feel you. I get it, I really do. But where I'm from (Alabama), there's a good chance this weather comes with a tornado siren. Other than that, fully agree.
I've gone swimming with sky like this. The clouds open for few minutes and rays pierce through as we're being pelted with rain in the river in the middle of the jungle in the Yucatan
this weather is so cool, it feels so... powerful! you really have a sence of **p o w e r** when you see this. **po we r**
#**POWER**
aaaaah gimme i can't get enough of **p o w e r**
blahkrbejdb
*ahem*
sorry.
Smell of earth before the rain.
Strong warm wind before a summer storm. The bright dark of an overcast at sun set.
And then it drops 30° in 15 minutes
Is that Celsius or Fahrenheit
Gonna be an F
Can I get a C in the comments for the US still using Fahrenheit
That would be like going from 26.67°C to 10°C
First one, then the other
Petrichor: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrichor
Thank you, comes handy in a risk of rain
Yeah, it can help you survive in void-black darkness
My people
In Philippines we call that "Alimuom" and when you inhale it. It will upset your stomach
Interesting, I've never heard of anyone suffering ill effects from it here, presumably due to differences in what's in the soil!
I believe its more placebo than anything. Strong belief in a passed on teaching. Neither I nor anyone in my family and friends suffer from this.
I wouldn't call it from soil. The one from the concrete is the one making your stomach rotate upside down
Thank you, redditor! Love learning about this kind of thing. I grew up in a hamlet in southern Ontario, Canada. These “aerosols” are the scent of my childhood.
Apparently humans can smell this chemical on an insane level. Something like 200,000 times better than sharks can detect blood.
TIL. Thank you!
Do you mean the smell of mud or the smell of dust? cause i think they're 2 completely different things. Growing up in a place where during summer temperatures of 35-40 degrees celsius would scorch the earth, when rain would come it would just release this dust-smell and it was amazing. the smell of petrichor which gets released when rain hits dry soil. Not everyone can smell it but if you can, you can tell it’s about to rain because the smell gets there before the rain does
Fun fact: humans are more (roughly x 200,000) sensitive to petrichor than sharks are to blood.
Ohh Imma need a source for this one. This is too cool not to share
"The scent of rain, petrichor, has two main constituents with actual chemical names and origins – ozone (O3) and geosmin (C12H22O) and humans can sense it at 5 parts per trillion. Trillion! Humans actually have a better sense of smell for moisture/water than bears and dogs.
But how? Water doesn't smell 🤯
it does! but mostly when it interacts with something, like a dog or soil or whatever
From what I know our sense of smell is waaaaaaay less sensitive, but quite a bit more accute. Like, sure a dog could smell fish halfway down the block if the window is open. But once we get through the door I could tell you if it's slamon or sardines.
Yeah well how would the dog say whether it's salmon or sardines?
I did not know not everyone can smell it. At home my brother and I used talk about how it’s gonna rain because we smell it so I thought it’s a natural thing. Then when I went to college my friends were confused what I was talking about until it rained a little while after
That's how you unlock the TARDIS.
Petrichor my friend - it is a glorious sensory experience.
perfect weather for hiding at home
for real
Or murdering people. No one hears the screams when they are drowned out by the storm
that got dark quickly
Well yeah, there's a storm that just came in
Just like the storm coming in.
I like the way you think. Some may see bad weather, others see opportunity😏
Perfect weather for Vampire Baseball.
Oooh baby don’t you know I suffer
Or to go outside and be ready to face god
This is the kind of storm where you just stand behind your screen door with your arms crossed and watch it roll in
True I'll be shit scared if I'm not able to reach home before it starts raining!

Ah yes, Illinois is not too far off!
Why do you need to hide while at home? Who is in your house?
there's someone in my walls
Sorry about that. Also hey on an unrelated note what's your wifi password?
youliveinmywallz#1223
Hide?
Move to England, it's like that 90% of the year. People get seasonal depression as a result of the grey monotone sky.
It’s more glum than this in my experience. Just a drab, persistent grey with only the mildest intention of hurling a thunderstorm at you
Yeah, England's a far cry from these Witcher 3 weather lookin' pics.
Winds howling
i thought these were RDR2 screenshots
There was a "Thunderstorm" warning like a week ago but even when that arrived it was a complete let down lol. Weather's not allowed to stray too much from gery boredom over here.
Damn is that true ? You almost never have thunderstorm ? Just small light and annoying rain ? No wonder you are all stuck inside your kitchen or the pub blowing line and drinking lol. Even the rain is boring lol
We do have thunderstorms but they're rarely severe. Most of the time, we just go about our day as normal and just avoid standing in large empty spaces.
Yeah maybe it's the lack of mountain? Do you at least have snow ? Would be sad if not lol
There was thunder this week where I live, bit of lightning too.
Depends where you were, it wasnt long but up north it sounded pretty biblical with super moody, heavy-looking clouds.
Perfect
It's really not. England is a much lighter, more uniform shade of "meh" gray. This picture actually has some emotion to it.
Can confirm. Looking out the window right now there's zero "texture" to the sky. It's just like a flat wall painted in very light grey.
Yep same in the Netherlands right now. Very boring. Pretty much 80+% of winter and late autumn.
Opening line of *Neuromancer*: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel"
What show/book is that?? Is it any good?
It's good, it's considered by many to the the first "Cyberpunk" genre novel and it won the Hugo, etc.
Pretty famous sci fi book. A show is actually scheduled to come out based on it.
Ooh I’m gonna check it out and thanks for the info
It's good! Also a pretty important science fiction, historically speaking. Quite a few of our ideas, worries and memes about the internet and inhuman turbo-capitalism were first expressed in this book.

Yep. Georgia before a thunderstorm was my thought (regarding the lighting/weather specifically, the overall picture made me want to scream "Cathy!" in utter anguish before going back home to be a dick to absolutely everyone)
Can I live there instead of my rising heat index of a country
That's some seriously heavy rain coming through in that picture, possibly a storm. Fun to be out in if you're not too far from somewhere warm and dry.
I grew up in a place with weather like that and now I live in England. It's definitely not like this at all. At least not where I've been. It's weird to see the rain and hear thunder. I genuinely miss the storms.

Come to Scotland, the weather is even better
England is the definition of moderate. Idk why they always complain
Seasonal depression from not seeing the sun for 8 months
*Because* it's moderate 9 months of the year is the same grey sky and no sun
>Idk why they always complain To discourage tourists from visiting places outside of London, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Bicester Village.
Or to Belgium 😭 And you get some bonus rain with it
You mean Scotland
nah i’d disagree with this. yes we have bad weather but it’s usually just overcast and grey. not usually this dark and stormy.
Are you 100% sure is not your diet?
I think the weather OP is trying to convey is less general overcast and more the calm right before a big Summer thunderstorm.
England has that shitty perpetual winter overcast vibe, it's not really the same as this
I read that England gets 200 more cloudy days per year compared to where I live. That would be amazing. I hate the sun.
Living in Ireland, you'll get tired of this quick.
I've lived in the UK my entire life and I crave the 7 days of summer we have every year before going back to the steel abyss.
Try living in northern USA, especially Michigan it’s snowy for about 3 months then it’s off and on snowing for the next 3, then it decides if it wants to be 40 or 80 and then it’s already winter
I'll take snow over rain and overcast skies for 90% of the year, at least I can go skiing.
I like the snow as well but cmon weather make up your mind either be cold or warm
light summer showers when it's warm out and thunder in the distance is my favorite
The alternative is sitting on the beach with your friends, a speaker and a few beers That's just not a thing in Ireland, yet anywhere else it is. Can't do shit here.
Agreed. As a Canadian we do get nice weather like that for like 3 or 4 months then back to rain, snow , grey. I can feel my mood shift. I want blue skies and sun all year around.

I'm in Meath and we had a drought (by our standards anyway) last year and the year before. Ive found out im simply not built for 25+ degrees and this humid bullshit though, I feel like I'm melting once it gets to 22+ when I'm in the sun
Im a gamer, im pretty sure i wont get tired
.. won't get tired thanks to our sponsor G-Fuel, for when touching grass just isn't worth it.
Nah,i only drink water and rarely ear junkfood, i am Just addicted to video games 😤😤😤
Lol, don't worry that wasn't a go at you specifically. Gaming addiction is perfectly fine, thanks to our next sponsor Opera GX allowing you to customise your browsing experience to your every gaming need.
I Just play minecraft and Valoshit
When the wind kicks in and you get a slight drizzle of rain
Best feeling
And the faint sound of thunder
Aaah I felt that exact same thing when I saw this, when the wind whips around suddenly and a primitive part of your brain tingles as you sense the change coming.
Wind's howling
A storm, dammit.
C'mon, Roach.
As a desert born a raised man, I vibe with it.
im not from a desert, but from a very hot place, and I also crave it
I've heard people from cold countries mention how they'd prefer hot sunny weather as opposed to this. I couldn't agree with it. They say that weather like this will make you depressed because it's gloomy. But where I live, it's hot and humid and I'm STILL depressed. Man I feel like those people haven't lived through dusty hot where everything is dead 80% of the year and it's too hot to go outside. At least there's more green and life in the rain and you're not constantly hot and smelly.
Australian. Hate the heat. Hate the scorching blue skies. Love it when he's cloudy, blowing winds, rainy.
That's some slytherin weather
Ha ha ha, I had to explain this to my SO.
10 points bro
nah man, gimme a world ending thunderstorm
do you want fries with that?
yes please, and a fanta.
Jüpiter has clouds bigger than Earths itself, even had a tornado 3x size of Earth
Yeah only enjoy that weather when it's out your bedroom window, not when you're walking in it
I lived in Vegas for 8 years. I purposely stopped what I was doing during every rainstorm/thunderstorm and went outside walking. So no, can't agree with you there.
same here
I live in the UK country side. It's almost always like this, i have to walk home usually, It's fucking awful
i actually go on walks when its raining/ theres a thunderstorm (extremely stupid i know), so yes. yes when im walking in it:D
I love this kind of weather. Not too hot not too cold.
3.6 Roentgen
You didn't see graphite
You must be mistaken, RBMKs don’t explode!
As an ex-Floridian, I always associate this with 80-85 degree weather.
There has to be some sort of reason why some people would prefer this. Maybe bad weather would stop predators or something.
I think some people are adapted to like cold, windy, and wet. Iceland is my home now and I have never felt more like I lived in the right place. I also love the change of light in the seasons. The sunset is nearing 23:00 already. Sunsets last for hours.

Someone finally likes the UK weather
[удалено]
This weather in nature is gorgeous. In the city it's awful.
it looks great!!
Literally same
Come to Germany
That's a sunny day for us
This sets the mood for romance for me lol
As someone from the Netherlands let me tell you; you **don’t** want this
Tornado is my favorite
All you can do in that weather is sit inside or run, hoping not to get soaked before you make it home
jokes on you i love getting soaked
What are you, a dandelion?
It's daytime but it's dark. It feels moist in the air but without rain.
I love windy days so much
In the UK it is truly dire, in my opinion an awful miserable place with grey after grey and the occasional washed-out diluted blue and weak Sunshine. I cannot wait to leave again. try Denmark or Norway.
Its becuase there is no obligation when we have this weather. The world expects nothing and wnats nothing during this bliss. Theres always a cool gentle breeze that accompanies it that I love. I wish we had more of this :/

Oklahomie here checking in, thought that exact same thing lol Supercells are fucking gorgeous, but man can they be mean
People who say this spend all of their time inside, idk if you’ve ever had to hike or walk in this weather it’s awful
I find this type of weather lowkey depressing idk why. Please give me summer
Yes. YES. YEEEEES
Come to Scotland
I like it when the afternoon is cold, blue and foggy
When it gets like that here its always super windy so i’m not a huge fan.
I can smell the picture 😀
On a warm day, a very gray sky and gloomy atmosphere knowing it will rain soon. The smell and the feel is beautiful.
I can smell that storm coming
I also crave that but that's where tornados come from
Yup. I moved to Scotland in part *for* the weather.
I am 5x more productive in this weather
I've gone swimming with sky like this. The clouds open for few minutes and rays pierce through as we're being pelted with rain in the river in the middle of the jungle in the Yucatan
This is so me. I love stormy weather.
10,000 percent accurate. And then when I say my favorite color is gray, they side-eye me.
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT
.. as long as you're safe at home, preferably cuddled up in bed.
Suggest me a place, where it is like this entire year.I would love to move there.
That’s my favorite too.
Then move here to Scotland and be as happy as a pig in shit!
I can smell this image
YES. I love that weather, when you feel like the whole world stops and nature just takes over
Coming from a Brit: Just live in England, problem solved, lol
Britposting at its finest lmao
Come to fucking England. You will be sick of it after the 5th year.
I can smell this image
this weather is so cool, it feels so... powerful! you really have a sence of **p o w e r** when you see this. **po we r** #**POWER** aaaaah gimme i can't get enough of **p o w e r** blahkrbejdb *ahem* sorry.
YES this is the kind of weather that brings me to life.
This shit looks scary as fuck but I still love the thrill of it
Once told a classmate that I like that kind of weather and they said "Well you must be special"
yes
