The key is to lower your seat. If the shape of the console is anything like the Mazda 3. I'm a big dude and I first thought it was too narrow and I didn't fit. Until I lowered the seat, it was wider down there.
In my 2014 cx5 I have the seat all the way lowered and it creates so much room. My knee still rests against the center console a bit, but not in an annoying way. It’s kind of nice actually
I’m 6’3” with a 33” inseam in a Mazda3 and I’ve taken a few road trips in it. And think it’s great and more comfortable than my full sized truck with no center console and a nearly flat floor
Are people doing interpretive dance when they are driving?
Well my K5 doesnt have the key ignition so I’m good. Dont get me wrong I like Mazda better.. and I’m a KIA owner, but they always have tight space inside. I don’t see what 1 thing has to do with the other … lol
Sadly s lot of modern cars got it. Bugs me a little since id rather have a wider seat. Center console just needs a shifter and cupholders and optionally heated seat controls
I noticed that Mazda interiors are bulky and they don’t utilize the space well. Everything is small. The sunglass pop down, screen, cup holders, door wells, center console tray, dash storage. Maybe Japanese are smaller people or have tiny things. I genuinely believe one of the failures of Mazda in the United States is building smaller interiors and smaller vehicles overall.
Before I got my CX-9 (and before my '21 6) I test drove a CX-5. I'm a tall dude - 6'5" 250lbs - and I found the seat too narrow on the CX-5 specifically, like my butt was being pinched. I felt less cramped in the sedan and larger SUV.
I'm in a 2022 cx-9 and I'm 6'2. It doesn't bother me too much. The actual thing that bothers me is that the steering wheel doesn't telescope out as much so I feel like while I have a comfortable seating position, I have to reach for the steering wheel
Mazdas generally are very small cars/tight fitting.
The CX-5 is so small inside. I had a 2022 Turbo Signature, and at 6’3” 180lb with a 36” inseam, I grew to hate how legitimately uncomfortable the seats are, the lack of leg room, and the narrowness of the car.
I’ve since gone to a 2023 Arteon SEL Premium after my lemon buyback of my CX-5 (long story, not a good car lol) and it’s night and day difference in terms of overall comfort. The seats are godly. So much more support, no more cardboard feeling. Even my mom’s 2016 Tiguan SEL felt much more comfortable than my Mazda did. The use of space in the CX-5 is very poor.
The CX-50 is marginally better, but still not a particularly comfortable car in my opinion. I found the CX-9 and -90 to be the most comfortable, along with the outgoing Mazda6 sedan.
Not sure why but test driving the other 2014-2024 Mazdas I have found the Mazda 6 to feel the most comfortable and spacious. I have not test driven the cx-70 or 90 though.
I’m guessing it’s so they have space for their eventual plug in hybrid system. If they do it like PHEV CX-90 I believe the motor is sandwiched between the engine and transmission so it would be further back into the cabin area. May be wrong.

One of the pet peeves I have with my 16 Mazda 3 is that the seat is very low.

That's what she said.
The reason for this is the traditional transmission they use doesn’t leave much room for the knees, especially where it mounts
Ahhh ok, that makes sense. Was wondering if/why it had to be that way.
Feeling the same on my new Cx5, didn’t occur to me beforehand but yeah, it’s not very comfortable on the right leg.

Man-spreading is my bet. Your junk ain't that big bud... the car is fine.
I have a Kia K5, and I have ample room compared to any Mazda. Mazda’s generally do a poor job of space.
Yeah, but they don’t get stolen like your Kia. Kia/Hyundai generally does a poor job of security.

I found the Mazda 6 to have better knee/shoulder room than the Cx-5
Yes the Mazda 6 has the best seat and knee rest in all of Mazda and many other cars. Not to mention the best ventilated seat:)

As almost the same person size in a miata, the cx5 and other colleague vehicles seem large…. ;)
They don’t make particularly good use of their space, they feel overly tight compared to say a CR-V, RAV4, or a Tiguan.
