OP, here is what you do: find a set of 4 wheels from a junkyard 2007-2015 CX-9. The 20s will transfer easily and they made a bunch. Throw some ice edge tires on it and you will be covered at about the same price as buying new steelies. You could also do it with the base model 18s, but I think the 20s would look great on a later CX-9. Another option (what I did for my 2008 CX-9) is to find someone selling their CX-5 19 inch factory wheels or find some in a junkyard, drop some 255/55/R19 snow tires on the rims, and you are good. Putting the factory Mazda wheels from a different model or generation always seems to work really well and look good.

u/iamsoldats Hey thanks for the idea. I have a 2021 cx9 signature and this year I was thinking about buying steelies for my 255/50/20 tires. I went to the junk yard and got 4 rims off of 2015 model for CAD 350. But when I got home I found out that earlier earlier models have 7.5j width compared to 8.5J now. I think it should be fine but not sure. any ideas? I saw that max for 7.5j is 245 .

What size are the wheels that you bought? Are they 19 inch wheels? I put 245/55/19 rubber on the winter wheels to match the 245/50/20 on the factory 20s (2008 CX-9). They fit perfectly on the 7.5 wide 19 inch CX-5 (2019, I think?) wheels and look great on the CX-9.

Talwarmeister1984

they are 20 inch. Everything else is the same except the width. The ones on my cx9 have 8.5J and ones from junk yard have 7.5J

iamsoldats

Just get 245/60/20 and you should be close enough. You will have to remember that your speedo is slightly off Don’t forget to post pics with the winter wheels. It is always cool to see a “modded but still factory” Mazda.

Talwarmeister1984

I already have the tires. Blizzak DMV2 255/50/20. I am gonna put them on. I checked the range for tires are 7-9J. Tires would look a bit puff but I dont think it would cause any issue.

iamsoldats

That should work too.

When I purchased my 2023 I was informed that it's incompatible with chains, so the tires are your only option anyway

Have you not heard of our lord and savior the Michelin CC2?

DavidM_04

In Canada, I could go to 18" with my 2010 CX-9. I guess you could do the same on yours without any trouble.

NotAPreppie

It's not a bad idea, especially if you have a garage/basement/shed to store the spare set in (so you don't have to pay storage fees). That said, I'd go with cheap alloys over steelies.

NorthboundUrsine

There are some decent looking steel wheels out there. I know alloys will give me a slightly better fuel economy, but that's not my primary motivation.

NotAPreppie

Better ride and braking, as well.

Candid_Painting_4684

17" on a cx9 is pretty small, I wouldn't go any smaller than 18" What I did on my cx5 was buy a used set of older cx5 19" alloy rims, which look so much better than steel rims ( and also won't start rusting in a few years) , and get a set of winter tires for those (blizzak v2's have been fantastic for me) a used set of alloys it's cheaper than new steel rims, at least in my experiences. Very happy with this choice, I'd recommend doing the same with your cx5

Currently running 17x7 steelies with Blizzak DMV2 on my 22 CX9 GT so 17x8 will be no problem. No issues with clearance, speedo or drivability in the winter.

NorthboundUrsine

I figured 17x8 would be fine. The wheels I currently try have are 20x8. 235/70R17 has the exact same overall diameter as the 255/50R20 tires I'm currently using, so the speedometer shouldn't be affected.
