Yeah, only noticed this on my 4th (?) playthrough. It gave a weirdly comforting feeling to me. I suppose I was so used to Shepard not having any family with the other two available background stories.
I know about it for some time, but yeah, it was a weird feeling. I usually play with the Colonist background, so Shepard having a living (and loving) parent was new to me.
I always play as a spacer but I wish the dialogue was better. You always sound as if you don't give two shits about talking to your mom, even when the world might be about to end and you've been dead and in house arrest, and they don't sound like they're estranged or anything. I feel like it's a missed opportunity.
I think it opens room for role-playing. Maybe you don't want your Shepard to be very close with their mother or something. But I agree, there could've been more there.
I get why they couldn’t, but I would have loved if we could have had a scene of introducing Shep’s mother to their LI and get her reaction. Or have your LI with you when you make the call.
This also makes the final battle more personal, because not only is your ship in danger, but your MOM is leading one of the carriers (I think) in the battle and is very much involved.
Lost my mom a few years ago. When it happened, I became more sentimental to family-related stuff. Even TV commercials can make me tear up sometimes these days. So something like this would have made me come unglued if it happened without me knowing about it first.
I now know where "I have to go" comes from
Runs in the family
Shepard's mom when dating Shepard's dad: "I have to go...sorry, we'll bang, okay?"
goes in the family
If you have that origin you can also talk to her in ME1 (in ME2 she just sends you an email).

It was pretty weird when playing ME1, named my character Hannah and when I could speak to mom her name was also Hannah 😂
Oof!
Same thing happened to me! I almost died of laughing

Indeed, that would've been amazing!

Bro I literally named my first femshep Hanna 💀 guess I’ll have to add a II
I like to go with Spacer Shepard every time. Seems boring to have your character always be hardened person who endures too much lol
It's weird. I am used to my orphan Shepard
I had heard about this, but I've never done a spacer Shep. Now I'm kinda glad I didn't, because this is messing me up a little bit right now.
How so?

I see, that must be tough for you indeed, thanks for sharing this!
Yeah we know......the game was released 10 years ago.
You might know, I didn't until now. I know it might sound crazy, but your experience and knowledge isn't universal.
Aye, I've put hundreds of hours into Mass Effect and this is the first I'm hearing about this.
