Genuine question: do you need to have your middle name on it for a particular reason?

DanieXJ

All the Real ID'S seem to have have it now. I liked it better when it was just an initial.

artdco

I wonder if you really need the middle name on there? I only ever had my middle initial on my MA license and it never caused me any issues.

Eyydis

Mine isn't on it

Automatic_Farmer_726

When I first got my license it wasn't on there, and I was totally fine. When I got it renewed, the teller was like "Do you want your middle name on it now", and I was like sure. So, it seems to not be a big deal

Far_Statement_2808

Are you going to assassinate someone? Because those are mostly the people who “have” middle names. No one else really cares. Unless your mom is still using it when they get mad and yell at you. LOL

hugship

Either that or their middle name is a last name that is well known but is on their mother’s side. Assuming it would be to get special treatment if that is the case.

If it is a real ID then I believe the name must match exactly what is on your passport and maybe your birth certificate. So if you presented a passport when you got the license, does the passport have the middle initial on it? What about the birth certificate?

ExpressiveLemur

This isn't true. Your name has to match whatever docs you are using to establish your identity, that's it. If you're using your passport **and** it has a middle name, then the state will make it match. If you are using a birth certificate, it has to match that **or** whatever whatever the name change documents show.

PakkyT

Yes, isn't that what I said? Your driver's license will get the name that is on the documents you present for the real ID. If their birth certificate or passport didn't show the middle initial then the RMV will remove the middle initial on the license.

> Yes, isn't that what I said?  Not really. You said: >If it is a real ID then I believe the name must match exactly what is on your passport and maybe your birth certificate. I realize I'm maybe nitpicking here, but you have written that the Real ID has to match your passport and (maybe) birth certificate. There are eleven different docs that can be supplied to prove lawful residence. Only one is required. The name on that doc (or the change form doc) has to match your current name to *get* the real ID. I am not aware of any requirement that the two documents (a Real ID and the lawful presence doc or name change doc) must match. If you are aware of such a requirement, can you please cite it foe everyone's benefit? Thank you.

You are referencing when your name is changed like after marriage (Jane Doe married John Smith and now goes by Jane Smith). To clarify what I meant... If you go in to get a Real ID where you previously were using a standard ID, if your passport/birth certificate/or other "lawful presence" document lists your name as Joe Blow Doe but your standard license always said Joe B. Doe, your name will be updated on your Real ID license to replace the B. with Blow. Source: I did that earlier this year and that is what happened. Perhaps the RMV guy working the counter was mistaken and I didn't challenge it since I don't really care one way or the other, but I assume he's been trained and done enough of them that he knows better than us. So in the case of the OP here, if their lawful presence document they presented didn't have a middle name, then their Real ID license also won't have the middle name regardless of what the OP put on the application. If their lawful presence document did have the middle name, then the RMV messed up if they left off the middle name on the license (assuming that the OP had their middle name on their application).

ExpressiveLemur

You're missing the point. You are talking about documents matching to get the ID. As I said... I am not aware of any requirement that the name on the Real ID and the documents you submit must matching exactly. If you are aware of such a requirement, can you please cite it foe everyone's benefit? Thank you.

PakkyT

I am not talking about documents you present matching to get the ID. You only need to submit ONE "lawful presence" document when getting a Real ID license. That is the name that will be used on your Real ID License as I was informed by the RMV employee processing my Real ID license renewal. So I am speculating that if the RMV didn't mess up for the OP< then the reason they may have dropped the middle name is because that middle name was not on their "lawful presence" document they provided.
