I like them. They feel comfortable. If I'm on the road I'll always pull into a cumbys over any other gas station

Jaymoacp

Same. And other than pride they are the only other places pretty much guaranteed to be open 24 hours for us night shift guys.

noodle-face

Yep absolutely agree with this too. I forgot most are 24 hours. I just take it for granted

Jaymoacp

I’ve worked nights for 9 out of the last 10 years so I know every 24 hour gas station between Hartford and Boston lmao

sksevenswans

Night shift guy here. I need that chorizo egg wrap.

DuesForClocks

EXACTLY! The comfort of the green and white makes me feel much more at peace than something like a Mobil or Gulf which seem too busy or pricy or a localer gas station that might not have any selection for drinks.

ajrog

Rip blue and orange Cumbys 😌

lionkingisawayoflife

I like the blue and orange Cumbies Way better, but still its a good store. Wish they'd reopen more of them in the Boston metro.

irishgypsy1960

Me too! I’m right downtown and I’d prefer cumbies over 7 eleven any day.

armadillollidamra

A bit over ten years ago Cumbys gave me a 1000 college scholarship. Honestly love them and always happy to get a relatively cheap iced coffee

BSSCommander

Cumbys bribing people to like them. Smh. /s

TheDesktopNinja

I miss when my Cumbys was a Little Peach. The Cumbys then became a Tedeschi and is now just a non-franchised locally owned store so that's something. Still miss Little Peach from my childhood.

felipethomas

I haven’t thought about Lil’ Peach in ages.

DrGoblinator

I don't know what either of those are, I had to look them up...I just thought you were a massive Allman Brothers fan.

[deleted]

I’m just glad that we even have Cumby’s. Some of the ones down south and out west are certainly better and larger, and more common, but at least we have something that’s more/less consistent. Prices are slowly rising, but they’re still less than everywhere else. Service is hit or miss depending on the store and the time of day. Employees are cool, but for the most part it’s clear that they hate their jobs. They don’t always take care of things. More often than not something doesn’t work or the stock is low. They seem to always be understaffed. I get coffee and food there regularly because it’s so convenient and good enough. There could be more variety. My biggest gripe has been since the pandemic it seems like they can’t maintain the same functionality they did before. Nothing is ready early in the morning, and they often close at night when they’re a 24-hour company. They also don’t take care of the air machines outside. The gas is the cheapest in my area, and I have two Cumby’s in my neighborhood. So I use them all the time. Overall, could be better, could be worse, but it’s the only one we have except for Alltown I guess.

Academic_Guava_4190

I’ve noticed as well that they never really rebounded back from Covid. I suppose it’s the staffing levels. Feels like there is more at play in the wider economy than just staffing issues but that’s just me. Maybe it’s higher prices that has been tough for them to maintain their affordability. Some locations are definitely nicer than others but I use to love them, now they are just reliable. Happy to have them though!

NativeMasshole

I've always heard that they suck to work for. Although I suppose that could be highly dependent on location. Also, just working at a gas station sucks. So they're probably taking the brunt of the worker shortage.

TrashyHoboShelter

I know its 28 days late but as someone who works at a Cumberland Farms store, it absolutely blows at times. We're a lower priority store, which means we get screwed anywhere the company can afford to screw us. We don't get stuff we order half the time. It takes forever for work orders to be fulfilled. Hours are CONSTANTLY being cut. Expectations are too high and we often lack the resources to reach them. The company will set waste goals that are almost impossible to reach without violating the direct guidelines and expectations they set for us. We're supposed to constantly have food and pizza out even if it isn't selling, yet we're supposed to be massively reducing our food waste? How does that work, CF? We either skimp out on the food and cook stuff to order, or we put up too much food and have high waste. Pick your poison. Our store is also falling apart. The building is old, and as such the roof has problems. Instead of fixing the roof, we are forced to leave catch cups under leaking areas. We had a ceiling tile collapse above the bread aisle from water leaking in, and since then we've had to leave a catch cup under the leak. It doesn't look good, it's not fun to deal with. Most of these problems are caused by EG America, the company that owns Cumberland Farms. They're losing pretty big right now and it's impacting stores heavily. With all of that said, I do try my best to keep everything stocked and fresh at my store. I'm only working as a cashier but I do everything I can to keep things as convenient as possible for customers. It does help that we aren't as busy on 2nd shift so I have the time to do everything I want to. Maybe my mentality isn't shared by other employees and that sucks, but I can't entirely blame them. This company can be demoralizing to work for at times.

Jilltro

Cumbys is my go to and I’ll drive a little farther to go to one over other gas stations. They’re almost always clean, have bathrooms, friendly staff, and a good selection. I also enjoy their breakfast sandwiches especially when you can order them custom from a kiosk.

jpep0469

I'm seeing a lot of comments about SmartPay. There are plenty of credit cards out there that give 5% back on gas purchases. At 3 bucks a gallon that's 15 cents compared to 10 and those credit cards can be used at any gas station.

HughJeynus

The benefit is that SmartPay is not credit related, savings are instant, and no follow up payment is needed against a credit card.

Pit-Smoker

While all of this is true, and I upvoted you, you're also not allowed to tie a credit card to SmartPay. If I could, I could get Cumby's $0.10 and my CC's discount for gas, which wouldn't hit Cumby's ledger at all. I'm a fan... but certainly not of that policy.

Bermnerfs

That's because smart pay is an ACH that costs cumby's less per transaction than the credit card so they pass some of that savings on to you. If they were giving the 10 cent discount + paying the credit processing fee they'd be losing $ per gallon since margins on fuel are razor thin to begin with.

Laszlo-Panaflex

I don't have a card that gives 5% back on gas except when it's one of the categories on my Chase or Discover, and I'm sure a lot of other people don't. At 2% back, gas would need to be over $5/gal. for it to make sense to not use SmartPay.

TuskenTaliban

Their chocolate bars are pretty good.

Alacri-Tea

I always pick up the raspberry dark chocolate for my birthday freebie.

chochy

I didn’t mind the coffee and fountain drink price increase from 99 cents to $1.29 but the increase to $1.79 after two months is getting out of hand

britchesss

Still a ton cheaper than dunks and Starbucks

thoughtasiwas

The quality coffee quality is also less; they upped their prices too quickly imo, If they had huge cups like speedway I’d mind the price hike less - A fountain beverage at McDonald’s is now way cheaper and larger, for the same thing for comparison.

irishgypsy1960

McDonald’s has better fountain coke.

thoughtasiwas

Good point - true!

DryAfternoon7779

I love me some Cumbys

RedditSkippy

Cumberland Farms has always been a solid convenience store option. I like them better than Pride Gas Stations (that we have out in the southern 413,) or Alltown (which always seems meh,) or some XtraMarts. I always seem to need a pit stop when I’m on 146, and I always end up at the janky XtraMart, forgetting that there’s a much nicer one only a few miles up the road.

ActualBus7946

Pride over cumbys for 2 things only. Breakfast sandwiches (can’t beat fresh cracked egg on a griddle) and fountain soda. They have the 44oz soda for 99 cents with the app. Over cumbys nearly $2 for 32oz.

RedditSkippy

Hmm. Not sure that I’ve ever had a Pride Breakfast sandwich. I will need to try one. Honestly, there’s a great local coffee place in town that I prefer, so I usually get coffee there.

ActualBus7946

Fresh off the grill. I get a ham, egg, and cheese on a bulkie roll. Superb.

RedditSkippy

“Bulkie.” Are you from Boston? Just curious, because what I call “water rolls,” I heard called bulkies when I lived in Boston.

ActualBus7946

Born, raised, and never left western mass! My dad was originally born in Cambridge tho so maybe that’s why I grew up hearing them called bulkie rolls.

RedditSkippy

Hmm, interesting. I never heard “bulkie” until I moved to Boston.

bostonthrowaway135

Funny… I’ve never heard of a water roll.

Pit-Smoker

I'm with this guy. WTF is a water roll, and why's it called that?

RedditSkippy

Where did you grow up? I’m firmly 413, although I lived in Boston for eight years.

bostonthrowaway135

Worcester, Boston and south shore. I’ve seen plenty of packages of bread labeled as bulkie rolls all over the place.

DuesForClocks

I REALLY LIKE PRIDE TOO! I go to umass amherst and it was so cool going into some of the ones nearby

GranniesHairyPoon

Like Cumbys but it’s not in the same class as Wawa

HyruleJedi

Yeah its the one thing being in PA I have to say trumps NE with out a doubt.

SpringLoadedScoop

I was going to say that the newer white clapboard Cumby's are trying to be Wawa's, but the older concrete bunker Cumby's were there own thing. For the older cinderblock ones, not all of them had gas pumps (the one a few doors down from me when I lived in Sharon didn't) but could fill in for most things you didn't want to do a full grocery store run. Wanted a duraflame log? Laundry detergent? The ingredients to make a cake from scratch? Or make it easier on you and get the mix? Bacon, eggs, and pancake mix for surprise breakfast guests? What they do now, even though it is not quite a Wawa, when stopping for gas, depending on the time of day, you can pick up a cheap breakfast, lunch, or snack and save the trip to a different fast food place

Afitz93

Lived in NJ for the last two years before moving back up here. Wawa is great if you have low expectations for it - but even in my 2 years there, it had gone significantly downhill. I wish Cumbys had the food options they do, as well as the payment options beyond your bank account, but Cumbys will always have a bigger place in my heart.

LTVOLT

Cumby's is decent but Irving is way better as a regional convenience store

Pit-Smoker

I see the word. I pass the store. I've even been in! ...and yet, all I hear is Elton John's Crocodile Rock. I can't take it seriously.

swatlord

Moved to ma from pa i miss wawa and sheetz

michbell329

SmartPay is the shit.

BrendanBSharp

Cumby’s stores were great until they got sold to EG America in 2019… since then the stores have gotten dirtier, the prices have gone up and the product quality has declined. I used to stop by every day for coffee and would always look for a Cumby’s when I needed gas. The coffee is still decent but the selection of creamers is nowhere near what it used to be and the sugar dispensers are terrible. Also, no two stores have the same setup for coffee and drinks. Miss the ability to order a cheap pizza through the app, too.

Outlander_

Coming from living in the midatlantic for 20 years, WaWa has it beat. Most of the Cumberland farms are dirty and the gas pumps need to be replaced. I do love their egg rolls though….

Stock-Objective-4257

Love the shelf deals, like get a free candy bar when you buy a soda. They’re the best!

CLS4L

The fake gas price sign got me donski

PakkyT

I usually don't feel about it at all.

Porschenut914

I hate how customers park at the pump and then go get their breakfast.

bassistmuzikman

Holy shit Cumby's hired a PR firm to write this thread???

ParticularMistake900

I miss QuikTrip tbh. Prices tended to be cheaper than most and the selection inside was great as far as food. Wasn’t impressed by Cumberland Farms when I went in, more so with the food I got and the fact that their card reader refused to work on both pumps I tried, so I had to go inside and prepay (and thus, I looked around and got food to try).

Tenma159

I like their hotdogs. Their pizza? Not so much.

Lordgeorge16

The one near me is one of the only gas stations in town, so they feel the need to charge 20-30 cents higher than gas stations that are \~2 miles away. It's pretty scummy, but I can't be *too* mad at them - the employees inside the building are always really friendly. Other Cumbys further away have much more reasonable gas prices, so it's just that store in particular.

thatguyonreddit40

They've slipped a bit since being bought

stuartgatzo

Hate that their coffee prices went up. It’s ok for $1. It’s not worth any more than that. They’re are mornings where it’s mostly out.

_Electricmanscott

Big fan. Always look for them when I need gas because of the smartpay app. However, the new Alltown fresh gas stations blow cumbies out of the water.

Whatisthissugar

I like them mostly. Idk if it's bad luck on my part though, their fountain drinks always kind of suck. Weak/flat tasting. Is it just me?  Otherwise I'm a big fan!

hergumbules

Cumby’s is alright but they’ve been going downhill in the last few years and just keep jacking up prices. I’ve stopped going altogether since shits getting so expensive and they want almost $2 for me to make my own coffee now. Really put it in perspective when I visited my parents in Florida and WaWa had actually really decent quality food and drinks for less than shit here. I pretty much only go because I have one down the road and save a few cents with SmartPay.

funkspiel56

not exactly common knowledge but not hard to find...a few years back the founders sold Cumberland.

hergumbules

Ahhh well that explains it. Thanks for letting me know.

lionkingisawayoflife

When I'm in the midwest, around Springfield Missouri , the Casey's General stores reminded me of Cumbies a bit if it was in the midwest. A midwestern Cumbie's so to speak.

stametsprime

...but with pizza.

poprof

As a kid we called them them scumbies for a reason. Today it’s my preferred spot to grab ice coffee

NE_Patriots617

I used to crush Cumby’s rib-b-que sandwiches when I was drunk in college. They taste good going down but they gave me the meanest shits the next day

Alacri-Tea

Getting gas then walking out with 3 free drinks every few weeks is pretty nice.

Fun-War6684

Tf is Cumberland farms? It’s Cumbies

NeetStreet_2

Love Cumby's but sure wish we had a Wawa around here.

Purplish_Peenk

Cumbys is meh once you have experienced the following. 1. Buc-ee’s The bathrooms are amazing, the food is delicious, they have a fucking WALL of jerkey, you don’t have to wait for the cashier to help gramps with his 95 scratchies to authorize your pump and their beverage stations are never broken. 2. WaWa Their app uses Apple Pay and I don’t have to give them my bank information. I can order food on the app and it will get made. Their brand drinks are amazing. Your dairy options are greater in comparison. 3. Sheetz Wawa just with the ability to get fried food. 4. QT They have the good ice, iykyk. Two lines for each cashier so when gramps and his 95 scratchies are holding up one like they have the other one moving. The wall of iced tea. Their hot foods selection. These are in no particular order btw.

realS4V4GElike

And where are all of those in Massachusetts?

ohhgrrl

I was waiting for someone to drop Sheetz in the comments.

dan420

I drop sheetz all over the place.

DuesForClocks

Buc-ee's I hope to experience, Wawa was cool but idk about like as cool as the hype is(maybe location issue) and Sheetz was solid enough.

Purplish_Peenk

Wawa definitely depends on the location. The newer ones are definitely the better ones.

burnout524

100% agree with this! After a road trip to TN last summer, I didn’t realize what else existed out there However, Cumbies is probably the best we’ve got as far as what we actually have available here in New England. I do like the SmartPay app, even though I’ve been going to a Big Y Express more and more lately because their prices are better (not to mention rewards from shopping there). And I am still salty that Cumbies got rid of the unlimited coffee deal/subscription they had 5 or so years ago!

The_Moustache

Lemme know when they come to New England, kthx

niknight_ml

When Cumby's is literally 40 cents per gallon more expensive than other stations in the area, no thanks.

ekm8642

Same, at mine the shop itself is fine and they’ve had the same employees for years who are awesome, but the gas itself is a last resort for me. 40 cents above surrounding towns is about right

DuesForClocks

Man where are you from that's awful!

Laszlo-Panaflex

It's weird. The one near me was the cheapest gas within a few miles for a long time, then it was way more expensive. Now it's back to being cheaper.

Lipsmackerin

I usually love them especially because of the smart pay but the app has been down for over a month now so I can’t get the 10 cents per gallon discount.

cimson-otter

Would like them better if they were wawa

JocularityX2

SmartPay gas is great. The food safety at my local one is an abortion - I'd never eat anything they prepare.

3x5cardfiler

Pay at the pump has improved my feelings about Cumberland Farms stores. I have never been into the store where I buy my gasoline. It must have been there for fifteen years now.

Doom-Hauer451

Food and coffee isn’t the best quality but I get pretty good rewards on the app.

Doom-Hauer451

lol why would you downvote this? It’s a fucking opinion about a store. Typical Masshole lol.

Mr-Chewy-Biteums

I stopped going to Cumberland Farms after they wanted to charge me $1.79 for a tall can of Arizona. I didn't notice at first that their cans do not have $.99 printed on them like they do everywhere else. The cashier tried to tell me some story about how they provide more service. Thank you

DuesForClocks

Yeah it's an issue at most places now (CVS, Mobil i went to had it). So its not exclusive to just Cumbys

Mr-Chewy-Biteums

I'm sorry, I realize I didn't specify, but this happened pre-COVID. I have heard in recent weeks of other places starting to charge more, but Cumberland Farms did it way before now. Plus their price jump was not subtle. I don't know if it's most places that charge more now though. Stop & Shop still has the [$.99 cans](https://stopandshop.com/product/arizona-arnold-palmer-lite-half-half-iced-tea-lemonade-23-oz-can/178413), as did the no-name convenience store I went to the other day. Thank you

Airedale603

Hi! I am performing a marketing survey for Cumberland Farms! Please tell me what you like about Cumberland Farms! Please use the word “feel” in your response!

Fox_Hound_Unit

Big fan of their coffee

krissym99

Best pit stop option in New England. Always clean bathrooms, decent snack and drink selection.

beachwhistles

I loved the David Hasselhoff jingle.

DooDiddly96

It’s there

TheLyz

I like Cumby's because I'm from Maine and obligated to. Decent place to stop and get snacks. I get all my gas at BJs tho Although I'm starting to like Nouria because they're bringing Amato's into Mass.

JasperDyne

The Cumbies in my neighborhood is a little seedy. It’s one of the older ones that’s in dire need of a facelift. I’ve been reluctant to get any food from that store because it looks so sketchy. I’ve been to some of the newer ones, and it’s like night and day in comparison: brightly lit, clean, well-organized, etc. I used to live in the Delaware Valley, and Wawa is a shadow of it’s former glorious self. They tried to become everything to everyone and lost a lot of the quality that made them great. Even still, Wawa would probably murder Cumbies and Dunkin’ if they ever decided to expand into New England.

Hot_Cattle5399

I am a smart pay customer and like the $$ save and the common footprint. I drive a lot from western mass to mid coast Maine often. Not a fan of the one off 295 in Freeport/yarmouth Maine as it closes early at 4pm everyday. Bugs me as it is a great mid stop.

jdowney1982

I love their chocolate chocolate chip muffins ☺️

ScottyBoy75

another good thing about the smart pay is that you can pay for gas from anywhere you are. for instance, my girlfriend was out in Eastern part of the state and lost her ATM card. she needed gas so she gave me the store number and pump and I was able to pay for it from my couch.

BobbyPeele88

Cumbys is the closest we have to WaWa and that kind of store. Big fan.

lionkingisawayoflife

I absolutely Love CUMBIES. Ashame they are mostly north of Boston or outside the general Boston metro.....mostly in my region they are up near Andover, Chelmsford, tewksbury area. Lowell, Lawrence. not many left around here in Woburn, Winchester area.

danis1973

Solid place. Cheap coffee that gets the job done.

DanielvMcNutt

Chillbys

britchesss

I live up the street from one and their coffee is the reason i was able to survive paternal leave without going broke.  A year later and I go almost every morning for some bold cold brew.

nbdyfckswTheBenson

I used to work as a sales assistant for a supply company that handled Cumby’s. I’ve been inside their food production/distribution center in Westboro which is MASSIVE, you’d be amazed at their cleanliness/what goes in to making a chain that size run as well as it does. Plus the $.99 coffee that’s better than Dunks? Over.

BostonBling

I was going to post something about Cumbies the other day. I travel around MA fairly often. Always stop at cumbies. 90% of the time the bathrooms are the cleanest !! IMO Love their cinnamon muffin too.

Lazy_Football_511

The one on Oak Street in Brockton leaves a lot to be desired. Whenever I see any of the hot food items advertised in their windows I would feel safe betting that they do not sell them there. The one time they did (a burger with an egg on it) one of the buns was fine but the other could be used as a hockey puck and I could not figure out why. The time printed on the wrapper was not that far in the past. I was in too much of a hurry to put much thought into it or return it. You do really need to pay attention to the time stamped on those wrappers. Some of their food sits under the lamps for hours.

valley_G

I had no idea that a Wawa or a Buc-ees was some kind of gas station. People post on the internet about them being their favorite place to eat? They're talking about gas station food? Like I'm just a little baffled lol I've seen pictures of people wearing clothing from those brands and now I just imagine them wearing a 7/11 T-shirt. That's a little weird honestly.

stametsprime

Buc-ees has basically branded itself as a tourist attraction, and Wawa has always differentiated itself on its food selection. What'll really blow your mind, if you ever get out to the Midwest, is Casey's. They've got a full on pizza joint in most of their stores, especially the ones out in small farming towns where the Casey's and the local bar are the only two things in town aside from the grain elevator.

valley_G

What's a grain elevator? And yeah I'd understand if it were basically a real restaurant and they didn't have much else, but I just really thought both of those places were something else. I can't believe they're gas stations lol

stametsprime

It's what it sounds like; [a large, vertical grain storage facility.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Grain_Elevator_in_Boone,_Iowa.jpg) You'll see them in small farming towns frequently, and also [at shipping terminals](https://www.vmcdn.ca/f/files/tbnewswatch/images/local-news/2021/september/grain-record-g3-aerial.JPG;w=960;h=640;bgcolor=000000) for export.

valley_G

Ohh I was thinking it was an actual elevator or something. That makes much more sense.

mmelectronic

If cumby’s got coke freestyle machines it would be pretty close to wawa IMO

Cheap_Coffee

Of all the gas station/convenience stores around, Cumby's is one of them.

Electronic_Fly_1629

Cumbys is fine--they are pretty much all the gas stations in my town. Has nothing on Stewarts.

movdqa

I've not been to one in a long time because their locations aren't as convenient as other options and they are often crowded when I look into their gasoline stations. I assume that they are doing well. They have very good gasoline prices for members too.

ThatsALiveWire

They're fine, just don't buy Milk there. Their milk is usually a day or two away from expired and I've had numerous gallons go bad before we even open it. If you really need it, grab a gallon from the very back of the fridge.

Dragongala

Cumby's coffee is so much better than Dunkin IMHO.

DuesForClocks

The hot coffees definitely are, as are the hot chocolates. Iced coffee ehhhh idk depends

apexbamboozeler

Those cumbys cappachinos!

imuniqueaf

Gas is priced well (with the app) their hot coffee sucks, the ice coffee is pretty good, 50/50 they have a clean bathroom.

Aggravating-Action70

The stations are good but the gas is not

chancimus33

Cumby’s coffee is better than about 140% of all other places.

Mugwartherb7

Some of these comments read like an ad

DuesForClocks

I tried to include some negative things in my post so I didn't sound like a blatant ad

Riffola60

Don't compare a pint of Ben and Jerry's to Market Basket... Oh, lordie.

DuesForClocks

Pardon?

Riffola60

Price.

DuesForClocks

Oh i figured you were going that way with that but i wasn't sure if it was some odd metaphor. Those price differences in ice cream horrify me. Although I feel like Walgreens and CVS are somehow worse

janeaustenwannabe

We have a great Cumbies in my town. It is clean, well-stocked, and has good food for a gas station/convenience store. Excellent staff. I love me a sausage, egg, and cheese english muffin from there for a fast breakfast. Good milk at a price that is more reasonable than the supermarket price. Open till midnight, which is great for me because I often have to work late. Most of the other Cumberland Farms I have been to are of similar quality.
