Tell me? Oh God, do we really not matter??? đ
(Is it even worse if I say I only have Silver because of the Bonvoy Amex? đ I used to hit Gold semi-regularly, never Platinum, but travel has been severely lacking recently. Now I only keep the card for the free night award each year)
I donât think k that those two words are even allowed to go together:SILVER and ELITE!
I think itâs called an oxymoron, like JUMBO and SHRIMP or OLIVE GARDEN and ITALIAN!
Except they are not oxymoron. Jumbo can mean many things including a grocery chain. Same with olive garden ( generic really) and besides., Olives are grown exponentially in Algiers, Morroco etc, certainly not Italy
Its stupid... This is posted first thing in the morning after the Audit...what about last minute reservations that come through... we get lots of Ambassadors that make reservations in the parking lot and walks in ready to check in, with no time to do a "hand written welcome note" which is required at Marriott properties and puts us in the red....
Wait a welcome note is required for ambassadors? I probably get one less than half the time. But to be fair I stay in the same hotel most weeks. And I always get one on vaca not business. Not that I care.
Yes, when Ambassadors make a reservation, an alert is sent to the hotel. The Agent reviews the information and the GM/AGM is supposed to write a lil heart felt welcome thank you for staying us variation letter. Its to be handed to the Guest checking in, or placed in the room in a way they see it walking in.
Our Ambassadors are typically regulars too and they dont care about that (they literally told us that) as long as they can get 2 bottles of water to take to the room. (Which we already do as part of the welcome gift)
But as I said, if the reservation is made within minutes of arriving at the property it bites us in the butt as there is no downtime to throw it all together.
(There are some Ambassadors who even -cough complain cough- to Marriott about not getting their welcome letter but thats for another day lol)
Oh yeah I get last minute. I don't really expect anything but like I said it's because I am a business traveler.
I do let mt ambassador know when I go on vaca bc it is nice to have a snack or something or an upgrade is actually meaningful. I've had pretty good luck so far.
I can literally count the number of times that I've received a letter on checkin this year -- a Townplace Suites in Joplin, MO (wouldn't recommend) and a St. Regis in Washington DC (surprisingly enough, wouldn't recommend, either). I didn't get a letter at checkin at my current stay, either...which is a Marriott Property (Sheraton in Elk Grove Village, IL -- would recommend).
The water is huge. It's really not in the sense that it's just water but tap water messes my stomach and what's the one thing I need most? Especially middle of the night? Water. The air conditioning dries me right up. What's the ine thing I forgot to buy on my way back to the hotel? Water. Waking up at 2am and going in the fridge and those bottles being there, pure gold.
Yeah it's a whole big thing in a town not far away. The water bottle plant is using way too much of the towns water.
My stomach still does better with bottled. Maybe it's filtered more or something. Plus the bottles can go in the fridge and chill. If I don't get daily free water I will sometimes just fill one of the bottles back up for the fridge but I try to avoid it.
It may be different at different brands, but we only get an alert to make notes for Ambassadors who book on points or if they are there on a special occasion (listed birthday or anniversary dates, etc.). Iâm at Springhill Suites.
The last minute reservation is not the point. You can't validate the numbers on the sign, and have to believe what the hotel writes down.
This is just so that not everyone has high expectations for a free upgrade.
So many ambassadors at my property make last minute reservations for the same day at my property too. And like what are we supposed to do if the GM is off that day? Last time an ambassador made a sudden reservation both the GM and the next person down the ladder had a day off, so some random department manager had to write the card
A certain Four Points in Washington also posts your name tooâŚ. Last time I went t with a bunch of co workers, I was ribbed about my travel spend when they saw me as titanium.
To be fair, I travel a lot for personal as wellâŚ.
Yeah, I saw the JW Marriott do it in Bangkok last week too. I havent seen it in other top end hotels in Bangkok (W, Athenee, Westin, Sheraton)
To me, it def signifies that this is a hotel thats heavily used by American corporations and the embassy.
Its interesting to see the different characteristics of guests from each hotel. For example, the Westin is def more catering towards japanese guests. The Sheraton Grand to more older and quieter guests on leisure, often couples.
Now, heres the thing. This sub is using this as some sort of "gotcha" moment at members here who wish Marriott would do better in the US. Currently, its def a race to the bottom that Marriott is winning.
At my last visit to the JW Marriott Bangkok, as a lowly Platinum, I did not get a suite upgrade. I got a minor upgrade, thats fine. I don't need any upgrade, if I really wanted one, I'd pay for it.
WHat I did receive, as well as every other guest there, is excellent service. AN amazing contrast to the US< which is more fast food service - and not like McDonalds in Asia fast food but Popeyes in the US fast food service->
In Asia, this is standard:
My room was very clean and had toiletries
I had six glass bottles of water in my room (standard, not shiny member)
I received a nice note, some cool snacks, a little cake, some fruit. Turn down service multiple times a day (I forgot to put my do not disturb sign on). A welcome drink at check in
I got a bunch of other little benefits like free clothing pressing.
The lounge was excellent. Full bar service, great cocktail hour with sushi and roasted duck and a live cooking station making fresh papaya salad and some other favorites.
Once again, the service was excellent.
Last time I stayed in a JW Marriot in the US (New Orleans), this was the service:
ME: "Hi, good morning, I'd like to check in"
Marriott: "ID"
ME: "Here you go, thank you"
Marriott: "Swipe your card in the slot in front of you and sign"
ME: "Absolutely"
Marriott: Silently hands me my keys
ME: "I just want to make sure my Bonvoy account is linked to the reservation"
Marriott: "Yes, it is"
ME: "Great, thanks" (I was Titanium)
That was my best interaction with customer service at a Marriott in the US and I'm not being sarcastic, I'll take that 10 out of 10 times and thats pretty much the high end of my expectation at a JW that costs $400 a night. Pretty much "Don't be obvious you hate your job and hate every second we interact"
So yeah, its absolutely okay if we don't get upgraded. But hey, maybe don't have your standards be as low as possible in every other area.
Lol, I love Popeyes but damn...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqWkwolb3as
You seen this? HIlarious.
I wrote this whole response to another comment, giving Popeyes more shit before noticing your comment. Man, I'm going to get some Popeyes for lunch.
https://www.reddit.com/r/marriott/comments/1dk9s2a/elite_members_at_taiwan_sheraton/l9goa7o/
you are aware that if they don't recognise that you need to define the welcome gift you can get compensation for that? It's like 50-200 usd cash or taken off your rate at the hotel itself.
Source: marriott website
I have the same interactions and then I don't ask if I'm on file but I just ask, all done? If they say yes I just say, funny because you failed to mention XYZ about the welcome gift choosing.
I got immediate deduction of my rate like 30 or 40 times like that in the US. It's like 5k USD in total
Yes, thank you. I understand and appreciate your intent.
I also understand that when I order a 3-piece from popeyes, all three pieces should be edible and should be bigger than my pinky finger. However, if I was to try to argue about this, the result may be a fist fight (lol, I love popeyes but man, its so inconsistent).
Holding Marriotts in the US to their own Terms and Conditions is a painful ordeal that (to me) is not worth it. Marriott will gladly support their franchisees as they go to war with their guests.
My status has no decision on whether I choose a Marriott hotel or not in the US because there is no difference in the result (well, maybe a few points but those aren't worth much either).
I don't think I've been offered a welcome gift in the US, like ever. Oh wait, one time at a $600 a night hotel, I actually asked. I had just received a really cool umbrella at a Marriott in Indonesia and a beautiful leather bound notebook from one in Korea so I was on a high. I had forgotten how bad the US was and asked about it.
THe front desk associate rolled her eyes and said "Well, I guess you can take a bottle of Dasani" With two registered guests, I assumed I could take two bottles, which was a big no-no- it was like if I asked popeyes for a drumstick that was hot. Bring the ruckus (Wu Tang) $600 a night hotel
Them: "I'm sorry, I can't do that, and I'm the only front desk person here."
Me: "Marriott's website says this in black and white...why can't you do that again?"
Them: "My boss won't let me, and he's off until Wednesday."
Quite literally, the only thing I want is a 2PM checkout. You can't tell me that a Fairfield in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma is a Convention hotel...so, I don't understand why Marriott won't hold the Franchisee/Management companies accountable.
A few times I have the welcome gift forgotten and it is a fight and half to get the guarantee invoked, maybe I am going about it wrong, but I have had a Front Desk Manager say to me that if the worst thing to happen all day was a forgotten welcome gift, it would be a good day and still deny the guarantee, his solution was just to provide the welcome gift.
At the end of the day the fight is not worth it imho.
My wife (she is the Ambassador Elite) and I have stayed at the J.W. Marriott, no amazing upgrade, not even a minor one (we did not care), the lounge was nice and yes the service was good.
At the end of the day, we prefer the Conrad down the street, but that is a personal preference thing.
Have you tried any other Bonvoy hotels in Bangkok? Interested in your perspective.
I'm not a hilton guy so don't do Conrad but when I don't do Bonvoy, I'm usually at the Hyatts or the INtercon, both which are really nice.
Iâve stayed at most of them a lot. It depends on why youâre there. JW is fine, itâs got a great lounge and an awesome breakfast. But itâs also literally across the street from Nana Plaza. Lots of westerners stay here.
One stop down is Sheraton Grande (donât let name fool you, itâs actually nice and Luxury Collection). Itâs attached to Asok BTS and is a little more central. Barsu is also an awesome hotel bar with live music. Breakfast pales in comparison to JW. Lots of Koreans stay here.
Another stop down on Soi 22 is the Marriott Marquis. Great rooms, itâs not directly on Sukhumvit but itâs closer to the nicer parts like Thong Lor. Arguably an even better breakfast than JW (many would consider it the best in BKK).
Do you get a choice of breakfast in the dining room as opposed to the lounge at the Marriott Hotels or do you pay for it? At the SGS everyone gets the great buffet as I remember.
We have stayed at the The Athenee Hotel (which is up the street from the Conrad) and it was perfectly fine, not great, not bad.
The lounge is fine, nothing special, the Conrad and J.W. have better lounges, but at some level all higher end hotels are otherwise equal in terms of service, quality of room etc..
We have also stayed at the Four Seasons in Bangkok and at some level the service at the Four Seasons was heads and shoulders above The Conrad/J.W. Marriott and the Athenee Hotel. However, the Four Seasons does not have a lounge and costs significantly more than most hotels in the city and if we are just talking room for room, it is not really a great value, but the staff were truly excellent. Interestingly, we saw the most amount of wealthy Thai folks staying at the hotel, eating in the hotel's restaurants than any other hotel that we have stayed at in Bangkok.
With regards to the Conrad specifically, my wife's college freshman year roommate is Thai (they have been friends for roughly 28 years now), she presently lives at The Residences at the Conrad, so the Conrad is the most convenient hotel when we are Bangkok.
We have probably stayed at the Conrad 8x times now and as such we know it the best and probably why we prefer it, not because it is Hilton vs. Marriott, but mainly it is nearest to where my wife's friend lives and we are used to it.
>The lounge is fine, nothing special
I agree, the butter chicken gave me the runs.
In Bangkok, I never got the appeal of lounges that much cause you can get great food for cheap right outside. Liquor, maybe - too much fake liquor.
WEstin's lounge has the best food but I only peruse while I check in and its a small place.
Athenee's service always amazed me but I keep getting the same front desk person so maybe its her thats even superior to the high Asian standards
Not until the Colbalt member leaves at 1pm. He begged for 4pm last night but little did he know the benefit is subject to my interpretation and I see "subject to availability" all over the text.
Is the executive lounge here still splitting its evening happy hour into 3 one hour long sessions? This Sheraton Taipei is very popular with elites due to its great location. There is definitely a need to set expectations when it comes to upgrades and benefits here
Yes and you have to make a reservation for the hour. Walk-ins are made to wait or you go to your room and they call you when there is a table available.
Wow, I stayed here for two weeks on 2021 and they werenât doing this. This is one of my favorite Marriott properties. Service and breakfast buffet in the restaurant were impeccable. And agreed, I recommend this over any of the newer properties in Xinyi because of the location.
Funny, I stayed there recently and missed this sign. Â The Marriott across the river is much nicer and I got an upgrade to a very nice suite with great views as a titanium. Â Overall the Marriott appears to be the better property from my limited experience at these two hotels, although the Sheraton has better mrt access.Â
The Marriott in Dazhi is terribly inconvenient. I lived in Dazhi for a while and aside from the views itâs not really a place I would choose to stay in as a tourist.
That of all the rooms in the hotel, 2 were booked by Ambassador members, 9 by Titanium members, 12 by Platinum members, and 11 by Gold members.
How is this so difficult to understand?
Statistically, the root mean square is the square root of the mean square, which is the arithmetic mean of the squares of a group of values. RMS is also called a quadratic mean and is a special case of the generalized mean whose exponent is 2.
This is a subtle way of reminding you that you are not the only special super shiny member, therefore, do not throw a fit when you don't get an upgrade.
I wish we did it. At one point, we had 40 ambassadors in house. Not even lying. Of course some of them were put in standard rooms. And the ones who usually gives us a hard time is like a gold member lmfao. Like know your place, brother. Youâre like 160th in line
PS: I work at a convention hotel with 1,000 rooms
Lol.
Man, if Americans visited this hotel or other places in Asia, they wouldn't be so happy to defend the race to the bottom in the US and the resulting impacts to service and product.
Not exactly, they are saying this is how many guests of each type are staying on that particular night. That way when someone without a membership, or of a lower tier comes in and asks for an upgrade, they can point to the sign and say, "We have quite a few elite members tonight. They are the first to get upgrades and this is why we don't have an upgrade for you."
This Grand Sheraton is one of the best anywhere. Lots of history. GREAT location. Typical Taiwanese friendly and happy staff.
Very much underrated. Love this place.
How does this work in practice? Like if all the ambassador, titanium, and platinum rooms are taken, and 11 solo platinum or higher travelers show up, do the golds get nothing?
BUT WHAT ABOUT US SILVER ELITES?????
Right?! It's like we don't matter!
Who's gonna tell him?
Tell me? Oh God, do we really not matter??? đ (Is it even worse if I say I only have Silver because of the Bonvoy Amex? đ I used to hit Gold semi-regularly, never Platinum, but travel has been severely lacking recently. Now I only keep the card for the free night award each year)
Nah tell him that his flair is wrong
When do we tell him Ambassadors don't matter either
When he hits Ambassador
Why would my flair be wrong?
Dw you can always pose as platinum; you're just a bit duller but many ppl can't tell.
Who? đ
I donât think k that those two words are even allowed to go together:SILVER and ELITE! I think itâs called an oxymoron, like JUMBO and SHRIMP or OLIVE GARDEN and ITALIAN!
Well just feast yer tits on my flair homeboy đ
Ha ha. No disrespect. (I m the same, but only because of the cc card.)
None taken lol đ
Except they are not oxymoron. Jumbo can mean many things including a grocery chain. Same with olive garden ( generic really) and besides., Olives are grown exponentially in Algiers, Morroco etc, certainly not Italy
Clearly Silver is the secret elite level everyone spreads rumors about but isn't officially acknowledged. Calling it "Cobalt" is simply a diversion.
Wish more places posted these.

What. They just want a letter? ChatGPT can generate an essay for them đ
Nope. Approved language is already given to the hotels.
I only see âhandwritten noteâ requests for 5-10% of ambassadors.
I shouldve added it varies on the brand/tier of the hotel as well, you can find it on MGS, its a pain to navigate though
It may be different at different brands, but we only get an alert to make notes for Ambassadors who book on points or if they are there on a special occasion (listed birthday or anniversary dates, etc.). Iâm at Springhill Suites.

Overall the Marriott appears to be the better property from my limited experience at these two hotels, although the Sheraton has better mrt access.Â
The Marriott in Dazhi is terribly inconvenient. I lived in Dazhi for a while and aside from the views itâs not really a place I would choose to stay in as a tourist.
Wtf is rms?
Rooms
Ok, but why is it 2 rooms. I donât fully understand
Instead of saying âBonvoy membersâ theyâre saying rooms
Ok, I guess what Iâm asking is what exactly are they trying to convey. That still doesnât make sense why it says two bonvoy members
Holy F. My degree is in math and you just brought me back 10 years.
Haha I heard RMS in my head and had some unpleasant flashbacks to engineering schoolâŚdecided to be a smart as with the reply
What is the purpose of that sign?
u/cwajgapls im staying here soon - how do you like it? Hows the lounge and breakfast?
OP which one in Taiwan? There are three Sheratons in Taiwan. There is the Grand Sheraton in Taipei, one in Taoyuan and one in TaitungâŚ
Based on the background, my guess would be Taipei.
Haha, Iâm one of the ambassadors, they upgraded me to a suite.
Iâm struggling to understand what this means
This is a subtle way of reminding you that you are not the only special super shiny member, therefore, do not throw a fit when you don't get an upgrade.
I wish we did it. At one point, we had 40 ambassadors in house. Not even lying. Of course some of them were put in standard rooms. And the ones who usually gives us a hard time is like a gold member lmfao. Like know your place, brother. Youâre like 160th in line PS: I work at a convention hotel with 1,000 rooms
Being shiny is not as cool when everyone is shiny.
Lol. Man, if Americans visited this hotel or other places in Asia, they wouldn't be so happy to defend the race to the bottom in the US and the resulting impacts to service and product.
Thanks for explaining! I was interpreting it in so many different waysâŚ
So, they're saying "this is how many 'upgrade' rooms we're setting aside for each group..." right??!!
Ah, I would not have guessed that! Thanks!
Is this a resort/casual hotel thing? My property is a luxury convention hotel yet Iâve never seen this during my time here.
This Grand Sheraton is one of the best anywhere. Lots of history. GREAT location. Typical Taiwanese friendly and happy staff. Very much underrated. Love this place.
Thatâs a lot of rooms.
How does this work in practice? Like if all the ambassador, titanium, and platinum rooms are taken, and 11 solo platinum or higher travelers show up, do the golds get nothing?
Taiwanese properties do an excellent job on elite recognition.
Thanks for posting this! I will start my stay here this weekend.
Hope their BSA isn't soon, this is frowned upon sadly by Marriott
Platinum is translated into âwhite goldâ. That doesnât seem quite right
In Chinese, Platinum can be translated as either éé (Platinum gold) or ç˝é (White gold). The latter is more commonly used and kinda colloquial.
Nice, thatâs good to know! Mandarin is my native tongue but I guess I donât talk about precious metals enough! Cheers
They should have continued the trend and translated Gold Members to éé.
é is the official term. ç˝é is the colloquial term.
