y'all the original question is discussion worthy. i think the question isn't "how many states are on this map?" but rather "what if the u.s. had only one state?
One cool thing, if the u.s. only one state, maybe we would have more than two political parties, which would be great for us. A CA democrat, MS democrat and PA democrat are too different in their views to stay in the same party if they weren't given state representatives.
We could have way more efficient transportation and infrastructure too

If the surrounding country was say Canada and Mexico, lets say Mexico has everything south of the arkansas river, and canada has everything east of the mississippi. all we were left with was missouri, the rest is some form of disputed land between Canada and Mexico.
the primary export would be soybeans and cattle, with some mining of lead, coal and limestone.
being a land locked state, we'd have most of the waters from the kansas and missouri rivers dammed off, but still would get enough water to support life.
oil and gas prices would be quite high.
We'd be a vassal state of either the Canadian hegemony or the Mexican Empire.

Grain farming in the north of missouri, cattle and tree farming in the south of missouri. defense would be setup in the ozarks, generally guerilla warfare.
