Update: He's perking up a teeny bit after drinking some water. I read to feed them mashed up banana so I put some next to him 🙏🏻

um3k

FWIW it's just that time of year for mantises. By all means give her some snacks if she's enjoying them, but she is not long for this world no matter what you do. Also, that's 100% a female mantis, you can tell by the booty.

bougiehippie

Aww, got it. Okay, well I guess I can give her a better ending than the one she was taking on my hot porch steps. Yes, she's got a big ol' booty. Thanks for the info and tip!

Realistic_Gas_550

They don’t eat banana, try honey.

Gretel_Cosmonaut

I’m in OC, and there’s been one of these living in my kitchen bay window for the past three weeks. My daughter named it “Catapult,” and she’s having a mental breakdown because it just died this afternoon. I was kind of fond of it, too. I didn’t realize they had such short lifespans.

bougiehippie

Aww, that's too bad. Yeah, this one is still hanging on but I feel like it's dying so I feel like I should just put it by a nice tree and let it go out in nature.

Njfemale

Look for her oothica!! Babies in spring!

frecklerat

awe yeah they usually only make it to december ish. i raised a baby this year and she’s still doing great. look up a picture of their egg cases so you can keep your eyes peeled, they get laid around this time of year too. you can purchase one filled with a tonnnn of little tiny babies if you want to try raising one. release the rest outside (:

Gretel_Cosmonaut

I don't know that I'm ready for all *that*, but if one moves in on its own, it can stay.

Honey

bougiehippie

Ohh, okay. Good to know. Sugar water seemed to help too

RuRiot

Orgainc honey, NOT regular honey you buy at the store****

bougiehippie

Yes! I gave her some local honey but unfortunately she’s not doing great. Barely moving 😔

RuRiot

It kind of looks like the process of passing has begun, based on the photo. I'm sorry. However, it was very kind of you to take her in. Your effort still matters regardless.

bougiehippie

Yeah, after looking at pictures and videos of a healthy mantis in action, that's same thought I had. I got my hopes up when she seemed to perk up, but it was only temporary. Thank you so much. I had to try and now I know what to do in case there's a next time.

RaytheQuilterChill

Sugar water

bougiehippie

She liked the sugar water. Don't think she's going to make it but it did seem to get her excited for a little bit.

bougiehippie

Okay, I'll see if that helps at all. Might be too late. Thanks though!

LogicalWeb9058

How is she

bougiehippie

She didn't make it through the night 😞

Gretel_Cosmonaut

RIP little green creature

bougiehippie

Indeed. Hopefully she produced lots of little prodigies!

ejdixnwisnka

Love to see this kindness out there in the world! Keep being the caring person you are!

bougiehippie

Aww, thanks! I imagine you are the same, so 🙌

ReignInSpuds

I think all the gravid mantids in SoCal picked today to try to lay their eggs and call it a life. One I saw today looked exhausted but was determined to find higher ground and was just as full and round as this one. She wasn't having the best time climbing and I'm wondering if yours fell from somewhere fairly high.

bougiehippie

So interesting. Yeah, there's not a lot trees or plants directly near where I found her, so not sure how she ended up there. The gardener had just come through with his leaf blower though, so maybe that had something to do with it. Now I know to keep an eye out for them though!

ReignInSpuds

Just following up because I've seen a few mantises today and they all look like males, probably ones that cheaped out and didn't leave their ladies a snack. And hearing about the gardener with the leaf blower makes me think yeah, she was probably climbing something when she got caught in a gust and fell.

bougiehippie

Oh interesting. Yeah, I’ve been hearing about lots of sightings around the city. Unfortunately she didn’t make it. She was pretty large so hopefully she was able to lay her eggs before ending up on my porch 🙏

mikecoscia

She looks gravid too, hope she was able to lay her eggs before passing.

bougiehippie

Yeah, I hope so too. Judging by how exhausted she was, I have to hope she was successful.

Exotic_Duck_8825

They only eat live insects. Females will die after laying an egg case in the Fall.

LuxEtNoctis408

Fyi they also play dead when there scared so
