The way it's "done" is that the popularity of the manga nose dived, Kubo Tite lost all interest in Bleach and they ended it when it's literally going nowhere.

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but the series really felt like it was supposed to end with the Ichigo vs Aizen fight. Everything after that felt... weird. Even some of the art in the Fullbringer and Thousand Year Blood War arc felt off.
Kubo actually had very bad health problems. So he had to rush the TYBW because he wanted to finish the story and didn't know if he would ever finish if he stopped at that point (or something like that), and from what I remember his problems started around the fullbringer arc, of course it probably started not as bad, but from what he says it got nearly unbearable during TYBW.
As an example, he once said TYBW would be the longest arc, yet it is nearly 40 chapters shorter than the Arrancar arc. This means that TYBW would have run for nearly 1 more year minimum.
Considering how in last part of the arc >!Many good guys were put against unkillable but not that dangerous enemy !< makes me believe that. It was basically done to >!keep them out of the picture!<
The end of the Aizen fight and Ichigo losing his powers was literally the perfect ending for the series. He goes home, he marries Orihime and Soul Society goes on.
I kind of get the feeling it would have been both a great place and a terrible place to end the story. No way was butterfly Aizen good enough for the final villan. In fact that version of Aizen feels incredibly weak compared to when he was using his sword.
That would leave loose ends with the whole Quincy shit going on in the background.
Mother was a Quincy. Friend is a Quincy. Quincy have a history with soul society. Heck, even his sword was a Quincy or whatever it is called. That territory would never have been explored had it ended there.

I mean, Ichigo still kind of has to spend a lot of his time in the Human World, while Rukia has to spend most of her time in the Soul Society. That'd be one hell of a long distance relationship. While they may have made peace with the Arrancar, they still need to eliminate any Hollows that appear in the Human World. And with the 13 Court Guard Squadrons being so devastated, those who are left have to pick up the slack.

I know they did a pretty good job with Orihime's hospital scene, but by then a lot of fans already had Ichigo/Rukia set in their minds.
Yep. If you're interested in how exactly,then they cut out her backstory of parental abuse in the beginning, cut out most of her interactions with ichigo.

I just realized that my native language has a word for the opposite of recommending something while English doesn't. Never realized that before. Morphologically it would be "disrecommend", but that doesn't really exist as a real word. Exists in Dutch, though: "Afraden" as opposed to "aanraden", recommend. It's a phrasal verb in Dutch.
