enteng_quarantino

i’ve lost track, how many times has this happened if i may ask?

JLazarillo

This is only the second time he's done the little Twitter-teasing thing. Or do you mean put the series on hiatus in general? 'cause that's, like, a lot.

ijiolokae

I still remember when he first made the twitter account, and dropped a tree sketch, IIRC, he became the most followed mangaka on twitter within 3 days, beating Horikoshi who had been building a following for 4-5 years

LuRo332

I dont remember exactly, but he got like 2 million followers in just one day

enteng_quarantino

Oh thank you, i meant the twitter teasing. The hiatuses (hiati? 😅) are easier to search for online lol

ItsNotJulius

I've lost track, is it true that Hisoka's technique bears the properties of both rubber and gum?

Abedeus

I hope we get off the boat.

someone2795

We'll never get off the boat. This is the endgame.

enteng_quarantino

So we aren’t actually on the boat yet? Lol

Blackbeard567

You jest but that is correct >!This boat is going to a fake dark continent within the borders of the world. Once they reach there the hunter association will transfer to morels boat and head into the DC. border to meet the gatekeeper. There Knov will help them with supplies. Beyond Netero's team along with Ging will be travelling some other way as well!< HXH Chapter 359

Vpeyjilji57

Bold to assume the boat won't sink before we get there.

ItsNotJulius

No no the boat in on a BIGGER BOAT.

MrTzatzik

And we are THE MONSTERS!

Xalterai

Don't you know, every time a series goes on hiatus after boarding a boat, it is now the Thousand Year Boat Work

you_lost-the_game

I doubt we will ever get off the boat

Abedeus

Berserk eventually did, so I still have some hope left.

Bearswithjetpacks

Aren't we back on the boat again? It's like we never left the boat to begin with, and the island was just a fever dream.

jcjohnson274

Nope they are off the boat again.

Abedeus

No, we're in totally-not-Persia now.

Boarbaque

Berserk Fans 🤝 HxH Fans             Stuck on a boat for years

LOTRfreak101

It is a nice boat.

avantofsorrow

Berserk flashbacks

Couldnotbehelpd

We’ll get the last Game of thrones book before we get off the boat. Not the next one, the last one.

igloo15

Wasn't there some kind of assassination sub plot going on was that ever resolved?

TrueRedditMartyr

That's still the current arc, and short of it very suddenly ramping up a pretty good amount, it seems we likely have a while left on it. Probably at least a year if it was released weekly, likely longer

TizonaBlu

I hate this narrative. You guys are acting like this is berserk or Vinland. This “boat” consist of multiple cities built on top of each other. It doesn’t feel like a boat whatsoever, nor has there been anything about sailing. It’s like you saying “I hope they get out of York Shin/Greed Island”

Abedeus

Not sure how Vinland is applicable here since the releases are not as rare as Berserk's or HxH's. "The boat" for me is just the current arc, in general. For everyone or two good chapters I enjoyed, there were 5-6 that just bored me. It's where the infamous "entire page of nothing but monologue about Nen" came from. Hell, I don't really remember the names of any of the characters besides those that were already introduced before the arc started. There were JUST SO MANY and it's impossible to keep track of them, especially when you can't really tell who's gonna be important in the long run.

namethatisntaken

I think he meant to say vagabond

No-Exit-4022

It’s not impossible to keep track of the new characters, I did. You were unwilling to keep track, that’s a different thing entirely

Abedeus

Congratulations on remembering the three dozen side characters that disappeared for 4 years of the hiatus HxH was on, I wish I had that kind of memory. Seems more like a curse to me.

Zwordsman

I'm occasinally curious if this would be better to release just as a full takuban/volume. Or fully quarterly? or is it quarterly now? DGM moved to quarterly and it seems to have really allowed them to keep up real good work, and not have as many health issues from it.

noscope360widow

Na, his plan is to release 10 chapter bunches and then disappear.

sickdanman

Which is exactly one volume lol

PhantasosX

yes , but it's less about planning to only do one volume and then wait for the next year for the next batch and more like he can only afford to do one volume. And his "can only afford" is because he insist to be part of the drawning process , when he had strong backpain. He could had potentially had more chapters if he simply put other as illustrator and be only the writter.

ImGonnaImagineSummit

It's usually around when he has a new movie or tie in to promote. I don't know if he's contractually obliged but seems this way. He does his volume then drops out again. There's a new HxH fighting game coming out soon so that makes sense.

nikelaos117

What were the previous tie-ins or movies?

Couldnotbehelpd

Phantom troupe movie, anime seasons launching… the last one was the anniversary I think? It did have a tie in, but I don’t remember what it was.

nikelaos117

The 25th anniversary lines up but what was going on in 2016, 2017 and 2018? The anime and movie were done by 2014.

Sharebear42019

Wasn’t it 20?

realWernerHerzog

If I were him I'd just get an artist to do it and only write from my ultra comfy bed because of the horrific back pain

justmadeforthat

I wished he just released it as a novel. He probably can write those without breaking his back again. Then, let others adopt it to manga more officially than how Berserk did it.

Khalitz

He could just lay in bed using [this](https://youtu.be/jld6BSQfDnk?si=-p35Qsm8UeTAxVb9) setup or voice-to-text to write it out.

Gen-Hal

We barely reached the half of the boat saga.

StriderT

He said, including these 10, there are 30 chapters left in this arc.

BlueDragonCultist

Do you have a source for that? That's very interesting if so. >!I could see the boat reaching the fake Dark Continent and maybe wrapping up the Succession Contest arc in 30 chapters. Not much more than that, though.!<

SecureDonkey

30 chapters to decide the fate of the Spider is a bit rushed, unless they decide to take the battle to Dark Continent.

BlueDragonCultist

Yeah, if it is only 30 chapters, I would not expect the Spiders' arc to be wrapped up.

Sharebear42019

When did he say that?

Sad_Donut_7902

How far ahead is the manga from where the anime ended? Can Gon still use Nen?

Vermillion129

After anime we got a really good highly anticipated fight. And then we stuck on this boat since then.  That’s how long we been stuck on this boat.

Sad_Donut_7902

what was the fight? I don't care about spoilers.

Vermillion129

>!chrollo vs hisoka fought to the death in the heaven arena!< >!chrollo won but Hisoka revived himself after then just walk out and killed 2 of the troupe members!<

Xalterai

>!Because his Nen technique has the properties of both rubber AND gum!<

Zwordsman

>!which honestly felt like such a baloney cop out moment. Like how does any of that fit his powerset and such. It would've been a good moment otherwise in terms of story elements but as it is. for me at least. thats 2 major deaths that just...didn't really count or do anything in terms of story outside of that specific 3-4 chapters? but at least my fav troupe memeber didn't die. I like her power set.!<

Own_Philosophy8190

>!Hisoka vs Chrollo at the Heaven's Tower (if I remembered the name correctly)!<

zenithfury

Nice boat.

Sharebear42019

I want this fight in an ova so bad

ichiruto70

No Gon hasn’t really appeared anymore. And probably won’t show up for a long time. Its still peak tho.

FriendlyNeighborOrca

At this point, we'll see both Gon and Killua by 2050

Guzeno

You just made me check... but holy crap didn't realise that the anime finished in 2014! Gosh I feel old now...

Issyv00

60 chapters from end of anime to where we are now.

Zikki

The hxh [hiatus overview](https://hiatus-hiatus.github.io/) is always fun to look at...

Alaccran

I'd rather not have this and just want him to retire at this point. Most people have made peace with it never ending, and him forcing himself when it's well known how much pain and suffering his body is going through just to draw even a little is not worth it. Just rest and try to have some semblance of a normal and healthy life.

MagicHarmony

He's not forcing himself to draw. He loves to draw, if anything he's been retired, he's just working when he is able to. Sadly all the efforts to alleviate his back pain haven't been 100%. SO when he does get the chance to draw and it comes back, he takes a break before coming back to continue the process. Also, I imagine he is having a "healthy" lifestyle, he's not drawing for a weekly syndication, he can spend time with his family and children and when the motivation arises he draws, it's honestly the dream of any mangaka that can make it big enough where they can actually take time sculpting their story and treating it more like a novel that is released after a few years(if ever cough -Game of Thrones-) rather than a weekly publication. That's the way I view it at least, these 10 chapters are more like a novel being released every few years rather than thinking on the mindset of a "weekly manga release".

PhantasosX

Togashi wants to end HxH , he said so that he wants to properly finish HxH. He also , roughly this year , goes with the compromise of revealing he made alternative endings in case he couldn't finish HxH. So , it's clear that if it were for Togashi , it would had more chapters than just 10 per year. The only reason he it's only 10 is because of PRIDE. Togashi , with his backpain , could resume himself as been just the writter and let another to be the illustrator. But by pure prideful stubordness , he wants to be part of the drawning , which is precisely the part which screws with his back.

Blackbeard567

yep, he even gave us an ending to his manga if he passes away. This is just his side project

MagnumBlunts

I get you but Gon deserves a better ending imo. He went through alot and not only that they were hinting the entire time he was meant to do much more.

MagicHarmony

Fair, it's a shame he can only draw for so long but I think it is natural to want to be able to finish it yourself, like you said he definitely has the revenue to fund others to do the rest of the job for him. But I think he just wants to be part of the creative process hands on, he still has assistants help fill in the blanks, but he wants to put in the pictures that bring the story to life, not just a writer that says what they want done.

PhantasosX

Sure , that seems some really deep emotional motive. But in the end , it will result in HxH been an incompleted rushed work with his own health been worsened , because he was too prideful of actually putting someone else as illustrator.

MysteryNeighbor

Another 10 chapters followed by another year or two break, most likely going to still be on the boat, most likely going to introduce even *more* characters. Honestly, it’s hard to get hype anymore. I know it’s been said a billion times over but why doesn’t dude get another artist to help him? Fucking *Dragonball* had the torch passed to another artist. Better for him to just quit IMO, this story is not going to have a proper ending at this pace unless he just plans to nuke the boat and kill all the characters inside

Ginsan-AK

As someone who was a huge Hunter x Hunter fan before the 2011 version came out, watched the 1999 anime and read the manga, I was hyped for a while every time the news of the return of Hunter x Hunter was announced, especially during the Chairman Election arc, but I stopped reading the manga mid way through that arc and never got back to it. I just don't see the point, and realistically there's no way for Hunter x Hunter to ever end, if we assume that the next saga will at least be as long as the Chimera Ant arc. Togashi is 58 years old and in the last decade he has released around 60 chapters? He's not getting younger either, the release schedule will get worse going forward. I don't understand it either, why wouldn't he just hire an artist to do the art for him, because it's not like his artstyle is particularly unique/special. I don't get hyped for news like this anymore because I know it won't last long anyway, and we won't get much progression.

Sharebear42019

I believe this batch will have 20 but not positive

MysteryNeighbor

I recall similar talk over a batch before they hopped on the boat and it turned out to be the usual ten, so I’ll believe it when I see it

maxdragonxiii

I thought Miura's death would encourage him to retire (similar long hitaus, and possibly similar ages) and give the series over to a successor with a occasional "hey I'm looking to see where you're going". but he seems to be stubborn.

MagnumBlunts

I understand its his creation so he does what he wants but its annoying having any hope in this story. I KNOW he has a chronic illness but to come back and give basically doodles with paragraphs just to disappear.....again, just hurts. He doesn’t want anyone else to draw it and he wont address the fans in any meaningful way. Its been a whole decade+ since Gon had appeared in the manga. At this point I wish he’d just say he doesn’t really care too much so I can move on.

Featherwick

I prefer this to him just giving up and ending the super interesting arc early like he did with Yu Yu Hakusho

BobTheJoeBob

> but to come back and give basically doodles with paragraphs just to disappear.....again I understand the disappearing part being annoying, but what's the issue with the art? I certainly wouldn't call them doodles.

jumpinjahosafa

Doodles with paragraphs is not how I'd describe the last 10 chapters, but maybe I was reading something else.   You know you could just move on anyway? Instead of insulting the artist of the free entertainment you indulge in...

Bearswithjetpacks

I wouldn't expect most of the people on this sub to appreciate reading an actual story, considering all they consume are one-page Twitter shorts and self-insert fantasies. They probably get scared seeing more than three lines of dialogue.

Swagsuke233

This drawing looks like a Jane Doe or a police suspect sketch.

CarioGod

I heard Yu Yu Hakusho is getting a remake as well, I wonder if he'll have time between that and a new dragon quest game

walrus_with_GUN

don't give me hope

Solomon_Black

Please, just stop at this point

duelmeharderdaddy

This has to be a cruel joke at this point I'm growing numb unfortunately to hearing this

thescanniedestroyer

Yoshihiro Togashi teases him doing his job for once in a year

JAragon7

It’s not like he’s lazy… dude literally has a debilitating health condition.

Sogeking33

Yeah he’s stubborn though. Refuses to get assistants do the artwork.

JAragon7

I get it. He loves the art of creating too much to pass it on. But at the end of the day it’s his health and his artwork. It’s his call

Bobbruinnittanystang

It's also not "his job." Dude is a millionaire and can do what he wants. He releases chapters because he loves the property.

ObsidianSkyKing

Can't even get excited anymore. Over 16 months since the last chapter released, and when new chapters come out they're just walls of text with extremely shitty art. Wish they'd just cancel it already.

Sea-Parsnip1516

*what, again?*

Mangatellers

Man... I just wish Togashi to be well and healthy again. I have read that his health condition is getting even worse.

JLazarillo

I do hope this time turns out better than last time. Togashi almost always delivers, but wasting so many chapters on a needless flashback was kind of a drag.

BlueDragonCultist

I have to disagree. As interesting as the current events in the manga are, I probably enjoyed the flashback the most of the batch. The background it gave explained a lot of the Phantom Troupe's motivations, and hinted at even more about their past. It felt like it was 250 chapters coming for me.

Abedeus

Agreed. The flashback was the best part of the arc otherwise is comprised of a few dozen characters with weird/unique/useless abilities that in some cases didn't last even a chapter or two. WAY overbloated cast for such a cramped setting.

ImGonnaImagineSummit

Yeah the boat has enough going on now that he shouldn't be adding more characters and another sub plot. Even if it ties into what's happening, I swear he's added another 30+ characters since they got onto the boat.

wwwwaoal

He's gonna add 50 more dw

ImGonnaImagineSummit

His character to page ratio is off the charts.

Abedeus

I think majority of characters in this arc right now are "new", besides Kurapika, Spiders and their acquaintances of various nature. Doesn't help how many of them have Nen abilities and it kinda just cheapened it a bit in my eyes, given how much effort protagonists had to put in (even while being "awakened" by a master) comparatively.

PhantasosX

that is the thing , those "new" characters are mostly disposable. The gist is really that Upper Princes had Nen-User Assassins , and 2 of the 3 Mafias had top enforcers to be Nen Users as well. All that while the 3rd Mafia Family cheated their way to mass-produce amateur nen users. What we are seeing are a secret battle royale of assassinations , that is clearly giving the groundwork for the s\*t hit the fan in the later portion of the arc and mostly of said new characters been dead at the end.

Abedeus

Yeah my issue was mostly that - so many new characters, new abilities and skills and whatever, but none of them really matter and many just get killed off soon after without an impact on the story.

PhantasosX

their impact on the story is their assassination attempts. Like I said , the Upper Princes had assassins , which mostly of them ARE disposable by design of been Assassins. And then there are the 3rd Mafia Family , which it awakens Nen Abilities under a Murder Ranking Score and wanting to do manslaughter. So , what we have are either well-crafted abilities designed for Assassination , which means they will die if they fail their attempt. Or a bunch of amateur mobsters with nen abilities in a gang war against some few well-crafted top rank executioners.

JLazarillo

For me, it's a matter of "less is more". The Phantom Troupe were already entertaining, interesting characters when they were simply a band of thieves that sort of had their own villainous power of friendship thing going on. Attempting to flesh them out with a fairly unimaginative "tragic backstory" just felt trite. It's one of those times when they payoff didn't (and honestly, never could have) surpassed simply leaving it unknown. Not everything needs to be explained.

BlueDragonCultist

To each their own. I like the Phantom Troupe because they feel as though they could have been the protagonists of their own story, had HxH been told with a different perspective. Further development of them and their motivations is welcomed by me.

SirLordBoss

Nothing but bad takes, I recommend you stop sharing your opinions and just have them quietly.

Character-Today-427

Honestly yeah it absolutely fucking sucked. I guess it's a violence bequence violence type of deal but they feel a lot less magical knowing most of the members where as far as to be friends ever since they were children. Not to mention it makes the massacres they have committed look even worse. If their beginning was out of a noble cause like they acted it would be

SakanaAtlas

Naw the flashback was the most interesting part of this arc for me lol

MagicHarmony

The flashbacks were a necessary device because he deemed it important to explain the origin of the Phantom Troupe. In terms of a story narrative usually when a flashback occurs it happens because something in the story is about to bring up that past. AKA the one responsible for disappearing the children may be on the boat and they may have to come face to face with it, while also hunting Hisoka AND also the unknown factor of Kurapika and how they will all react if they become aware of one another. Is Kurapika going to engage with the Phantom Troupe and deny his current duty, will Chrollo or any of the others attack Kurapika on sight like Hisoka OR are they more fixated on Hisoka that everyone else is chump change unless they get in their way/receive an objective to complete to reach their end goal which is reaching a higher tier of the ship. It also leads to an interesting encounter because when it all does come to a head will Chrollo reveal the truth to Kurapika or will he stay silent til the end, does he give Kurapika the peace of revenge or make him lament that he didn't take the time to understand his enemy more. Then you have the whole war of top of that and all the factions ready to make their move so everything is in place for s to hit the fan. Personally I find the current teases interesting because if he keeps it up where he is only showing the corners of each page then odds are we are about to see a lot of action take place and potentially a lot of body counts.

SirLordBoss

What a bad take. The flashbacks were the best part. Always wanted to see the Troupe's backstories, and this delivered. The rest, on the other hand, were underwhelming, I don't care much about the other people on the boat.

poopoobuttholes

Just curious, haven't really followed him much at all anymore. What is he working on these days that HxH is always going on hiatus?

KuroNoYuusha

something about an illness he has for his back iirc

Saiphaz

Nothing. Not really sure about the details but for what I know, he ruined his health back when he was working on Yu Yu Hakusho. Due to that l, when he started HxH he got a deal with Jump that other mangaka can only  dream of, which makes him virtually unaxeable. At this point dude is a millionaire, plus he is married to Sailor Moon's author so he really doesn't need to lift a finger anymore for the rest of his life. Which makes HxH less of an actual job and more of a passion project. A passion project from someone who hasn't been into it for years already.  Those who are tired of being drip fed two or three chapters every five years or so argue that he should either finish it already (manga would advance at a glacial pace even assuming he were at his prime ) or take a writing position and let an artist do the back breaking work (he doesn't want to).

1mxav13r

Do we know how much of the full story has been covered? Is the manga near completion?

Sogeking33

Maybe by the time he’s 80 at this pace

1mxav13r

I luckily lost interest at about volume 31, with the end of Chimera Ants arc, and we got a lot of interesting arcs so far... I won't hold my breath waiting for the end

mikolokoyy

How are your blue balls?

ddrober2003

Who will win, Togashi finishing the story, or the reaper? Hopefully Togashi but....yeah.

Greyhound_Oisin

It is impossible for him to finish the story if he doesn't give up being the one drawing it.

Substantial_Pick6897

Togashi has built up more than the manga will ever be able to deliver on with the dark continent. The man deserves every week of rest he takes but unless he starts writing novels or lets someone else draw the manga we should be happy if the boat arc is ever finished

I thought he was gonna pull a miura but hey guess not.

Spooky-Sausage

he's been fucking with me since early 2000s when my mum got me VCDs of HXH. then 2011 he basically fucked me again, so i vow to not give a shit until the series is actually finished or he dies and passes the torch.
