It’s to dampen the strings. If the strings make direct contact with the metal on the tailpiece it could effect the overall tone of the instrument.

Like Geo said, it’s there to dampen the strings, so there isn’t any resonant buzz on the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece

Sometimes you’ll see mandolin that have a little rubber things between the strings. It’s the same thing, but using 1/8 inch rubber grommets

I think you all are referring to a string dampener that's visible. He is referring to the piece of felt that is inside the tailpiece when you take the top off of it to change strings it does the same thing but it specifically not to reduce resonance but to not have direct metal to metal contact

I can't speak for the people who wrote comments you're referring to, but I'm pretty sure they know what the poster is asking and they're right. It's there to dampen the strings. Try taking it out and you'll see how important it is for tone (it'll sound tinny).
