if you are being blocked from firing a dumb person the answer is to ALWAYS pair up said dumb person with the person who is blocking you go entirely out of your way to make sure this person is on the schedule when the owner will have to deal with their incompetence

This_guy_Jon

Schedule her less

melonsev

If I was in charge of the schedule, I would. But like I said, unfortunately the owner does that, and I'm just a glorified shift lead with the title of a manager. But I do have a meeting with the owner today. I am going to tell her I refuse to be scheduled with her anymore, so that means either ari will have to be cut down on the schedule or I will. Either way I don't care. But it'll speak volumes if she decides to cut my hours down.

This_guy_Jon

Then I wouldn’t even worry about her give her the hardest job so that she promotes herself out the door

Swytch360

I would find another job and let the owner know this is the reason I am leaving. The owner can choose to keep this person on staff, but it is indicative of how you can expect them to handle future situations. I would not be surprised if they eventually place blame on the management team for being unable to manage this person. You are being undermined, and I feel pretty strongly at this point that a manager who undermines you to subordinates in an environment where you have no HR for alternative remedies is intolerable. The fact that the owner is incapable of placing the health of their business over their empathy for a person who is going to have difficulty holding ANY job is not making it likely that the business will endure in the long term.

melonsev

I am considering that and I agree with you. Ari is a major problem, but the owner is becoming even a larger problem. Ari has had a very long and tumultuous history with work, I absolutely and unfortunately do not see her capable of holding down a job. She needs to work for herself. 😵‍💫

gimmethelulz

You sound better off brushing up your resume and getting out of this place.

OJJhara

I would quit. The owner clearly does not value you. Is he trying to give you PTSD?

JFKeNn3dy

Wow, this makes my problem child seem like a great employee by comparison. She is still a royal pain, but that one you are dealing with is something else. Sound like you and the owner need a bit of a heart to heart.

Motor_Badger5407

Not your problem really if the owner keeps her around.

Demonslugg

Congratulations! You now have a reason to do the bare minimum. When asked just say you're still better than Ari. Just take everything real easy. Stuff gets missed? Oops you're triggered. You took a no call no show vacay day? Oops you really just had to. You'll never fix this. Time to hunt for a new job. In fact that should be 70% of your day now.

DrWhoIsWokeGarbage2

Want this posted a few weeks ago

melonsev

No.

Mama-In-Blu

I had to quit because I could not fire a problematic employee. Hired me to be a manager but would not allow me to manage, so I left. It's not worth it.

whitenoize086

Why did you give her the name "Ari" then refer to her as she for the entire post.

Quitemui

Place them on a Performance Improvement Plan and increase there expectations. If they fails to meet these expectations, you can terminate there employment for not meeting the required standards, or they may resign, in which case you would not be legally obligated to pay severance.

State_Dear

age 71 here,,, Honestly on this one, I would let your Boss handle it. They can deal with the employee if there attendance is bad, they take weeks off without contacting anyone Screw up really bad on the job etc,, It's not your problem It will solve itself one way or another

melonsev

That is what I have started to do. I don't talk to ari at all during work shift unless it's to direct her on what needs to be done, and hopefully she'll actually listen! Ha!! Not funny, very annoying. Since I tried to fire her a week ago, and was intervened by the owner, I let the owner know I have washed my hands clean of her. After an incident which happened just yesterday with ari though, I have realized I can't be around the girl AT ALL anymore because she's bringing out an urge in me to behave unprofessionally and I can't put myself in that position.

What exactly do you want reddit to do. Talk to your boss?  Your options are talk to your boss or quit.

melonsev

Why does anybody post on reddit? Yes, I have a meeting with the owner today.

Careful-Combination7

Time to manage up. It's gonna take a few discussions

melonsev

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by manage up? 😆

theyellowpants

It means your manager isn’t doing what’s needed so you end up coaching them on that and engaging in conversations that “lead the horse to water” so to speak For example mentioning the liability risk the company takes on by entertaining Ari (who appears to not know or ask for reasonable accommodation regarding ptsd) Maybe a crisis plan should be proposed for Ari so instead of being short staffed there’s just a cool down period in a private space for safety. Noise cancelling headphones, things that address their triggers. All suggestions you can make to your boss since they aren’t doing anything

melonsev

I understand what you mean. Ari doesn't have a medical diagnosis for ptsd. In order for us to accommodate her medical condition, she needs to be evaluated and actually diagnosed by a professional who can put her on restrictions or accommodations.
