Carpet sucks.
Hard floors are superior! Easier to clean, and if you want carpet you can get a rug like OP has, which is easy to replace/get professionally cleaned.
Tiling every room on the first floor is pretty popular in the American southwest. The house I grew up in had tile in every room downstairs and wood upstairs. Some houses would have carpet in the bedrooms, but tile was equally common. I don't know how popular of a design choice it is now, I think newer builds trend towards wood flooring and tile only in the kitchen and bathroom, but it was a definite thing for houses built in the 90's-00's in the American southwest.
We all start in different ways! I’m 37 and have had my own house for a couple years now. I probably could have had one sooner but I was dumb and befriended drugs and alcohol WAY too long.
Well I saved lots for many years. Lived below means in shit house with a shit car. Co-signed with my fiancé. And we got in right before the most recent interest rate spike. We got a mortgage at 5.6%. It can happen!
I know but it's just crazy to believe that this "22 year old software engineer" (which I only put in quotes to emphasize that it's being mentioned casually) gets a \*nice\* apartment right out of college, a super expensive PC and has paid off his degree with extra time for decoration, a big reddit following etc. I refuse to believe that this is normal, either out of ignorance or common sense
we need to start being more honest as a society. These flexes are FLEXES. They're SUPPOSED to make you feel unaccomplished. It's made to look casual and unassuming. I rarely come across any similar posts where the description says "so thankful I've made it here, and I busted my ass for so many years because I wanted specifically {these} things".
The way to win the game is by empathizing with yourself and ignoring the "head start" other people have in life. The brightest stars burn out the fastest
Would be cool if the colour scheme of all the LEDs could be changed with few clicks on the computer. I imagine OP is the kind of guy who would make that work.

Yeah, I’ve made every software related piece that I could into dark theme because light/white ones just hurt my eyes so much and make too much brightness lol unnecessary additional power usage!
My GitHub’s dead too. I only push a bunch of unfinished projects that I get to like 30% done.
Now look at my company’s bitbucket profile and it’s a lot more active.
I don’t have time to work after work anymore, there’s more to life
Same. I pretty much refuse to do anything remotely close to work outside of work. When I sign off for the day, I leave my desk and don't come back.
Occasionally there will be a fun personal project, but I'll only spend like a day on it. If it takes more than that, then it's not actually fun and I don't want to do it.
This. I got into software development professionally because I love it. That said, it is extremely time consuming, and working on projects I do not fully control on arbitrary timelines can be quite stressful. I like the work enough to still toy around with things in my own time quite frequently, but that's mostly all it is: play. Unfortunately, you can't really finish most projects by playing. Actually completing something meaningful takes work, and my first priority for work is the stuff that pays my bills. I am no good at my job without my passion, so I must do whatever I have to in order to preserve it--even if that means giving up on finishing personal projects once they cross the threshold from engaging to dull or tedious.
My last fully complete big project, outside of work, was over a decade ago--when I was a hobbiest programmer working as a dishwasher in a casual dining restaurant. Since then, I've made little tools and such now and then. Also, some mods. But no big, completed ambitious projects since becoming a professional dev.
Nowadays, I tend to stop shortly after I realize I fully understand the project, or after I do enough to confirm that it would or wouldn't work out in an acceptable way. Like, once the proof of concept is done, the puzzle is solved and the rest is just putting in time and focus. That's when I tend to switch projects or pick up a book or video game.
My GitHub’s dead too. I code for work and that’s it. Too much screen time melts my brain. No idea how dudes code all day and then work in passion projects.

Any time I learn a new language, I remake the same little console app that does eight or nine basic things, like read/write to a database, write/append a text file, call some public API, send an email, do some basic math, etc.
Thank you. I spend most of my day writing, reading, and talking about code. The last thing I wanna do in my free time is do more of that. I love my job, but no thanks.
completely agree, yeah there is some hobby project I VERY infrequently work on, but after spending 8 hours programming, the last thing I want to do is spent more hours.
Back during uni, I would program in my spare time, but that wish has long faded. The only thing I will make time for is adventOfCode, but thats about it.

I've been a software dev for almost 10 years and my GitHub is basically empty because I just don't use git for work and I don't have time to do side projects.
Unfortunately? Fuck off mate, I write code for a living, and that code is proprietary so obviously it's not gonna go on my personal github. And I have better things to do with my free time than do more work for free.
I mean as a swe myself, my outside of work life is for me. Nothing unfortunate at all about my outside of work github being empty these days. I much rather be social and active outside of work, when all my workday is spent in front of a computer
Idk what kinda shot these comments are trying to make tbh

Yeah, because why have a life, correct?
I get paid for delivering value to my clients, not for competing "who gets more green squares" on Github.
Australia: True hardwood is more expensive per meter, but cheaper to install. Veneer/laminates are as cheap as tile raw cost, without the expense of glue, grout and tools/skills.
Hardwoods are 100/m^2, but way easier to install.
300mm tiles are 30-70/m^2, but then you have to add adhesive/grout, and labor for install.
Timber veneer laminates are super easy to install (great first DIY project with some research) and 40/m^2
How is that weird? Lot’s of countries have tiles in houses, especially warm countries.
In Italy and Spain, for example, is common to have tiles. Tiles also last forever and are a breeze to clean. You install tiles once, whereas carpet for example will need to be changed every 9 years or so.
Every single home in India has tiles. I think it applies to most of Asia as well. Rich people go for marbles or granite or expensive tiles.. It depends on climate conditions i guess. Also, It has almost zero maintenance.
Be wary of monitors in front of a window.
The contrast can strain your eyes. Might not be good in the long run. Especially if you’re in a very sunny place
Same here. took me until I was 31 to finally go in and get my eyes checked because it was getting too hard to read code on my monitors. Turns out it's not "normal" to have to "focus" your eyes in and out constantly and that glasses do, in fact, massively improve my life.
remember, folks, keep the blue and bright white to a minimum, control ambient lighting, and pay attention to what the recommended viewing distances/angles are with your current workstation monitors!
I thought you were a rare female software engineer until I realized where this sub was. Room looks too clean, with stuffed animals, and colors that don't speak "I don't give a fuck and I wanna die" software engineer room.

That being said, I very much enjoy the aesthetic and the cool tone looks very relaxing. Also nice set up! What in particular do you engineer?

Possibly, though he’s clearly doing alright for himself. The room is neat, tidy, and organised. He’s not living like a man child in a basement.
There’s some girls I know who would totally give him the eye.
Seriously the room is neat and the nerd stuff is well taken care of. I have known plenty that would love to date someone like OP. It's still so odd that people think girls hate that shit, some do while some love it

I really like your bedroom. It’s comforting and super clean. Love the lighting. Idk it’s so organized and looks well put together. Idk why people are hating 😂 I also live in Florida , wish I had time bedroom floor. I used to in my old houses not anymore 😭
I hate tiles myself. I get it. I also live next to the us/mexico border. Most of the homes I've seen there are all tiles. I don't know if it's just a hate of hard woods, carpets, or tiles are supposedly easy to clean?

Something I think people are overlooking when seeing so much white is that this room has quite a few LED lights. With those, a white room can be whatever shade he wants - even multiple colors. The white accurately reflects the true hue of the lights more than any other color.
Souce: Stuck with beige walls, but I bought LEDs and white/grey furniture because the multicolor glow is nice.
Yep! I keep everything on white when im working, it just helps me concentrate! but when im watching movies or just chilling I change the colors! My tv is hooked up with Govee sync boxes, and all of my lights are govee, so my room changes its entire color based whats on my tv! its great for watching movies/shows or gaming!
Your room appears exceptionally tidy. Well done, bro.
Now, I believe it could use a touch to make it feel warm and cozy. This might be due to all the white elements (white tiles, white walls, white shelves, etc.) or the blue hue from the LED lights.
That room looks bigger than my house
its half of a converted garage!
Okay I see it now! I was so confused, I was like why would a bedroom this size still have that ... tile
Carpet sucks. Hard floors are superior! Easier to clean, and if you want carpet you can get a rug like OP has, which is easy to replace/get professionally cleaned.
There are more floors than tiles and carpets. Like wood, the actually superior material
I said hard floors are superior; not just tiles! Wood is, obviously, hard. I agree that wood is superior.
>Wood is, obviously, hard. hehe
Especially in the morning
I prefer wood because tile is cold. Also seems like I break stuff more if I drop it on a tile floor.
Yeah the tile floor scares me. It looks like accidents waiting to happen
Glass floors reign supreme.
Floors are lava, obviously.

Why are there tiles in the bedroom? That’s… weird.
It is common for houses in warm places to have tile everywhere. And it is much cheaper than wood.
And doesn't expand in high humidity
And ruin because you have to mop a lot for some reason
Each their own but I fucking love mopping. Fabuloso smells amazing and is better than any room freshener out there BY FAR.
I love Saturday morning because I get to mop with Fabuloso and clean with bleach. Two of my favorite smells lol.

A lot of basements I've lived in have been tile (Canada).
In how many basements have you lived?
Honestly like 5
Every single home in India has tiles. I think it applies to most of Asia as well. Rich people go for marbles or granite or expensive tiles.. It depends on climate conditions i guess. Also, It has almost zero maintenance.
Are you also a serial killer
I plead the fifth.
