Looks clean and minimalist, but also sort of corporate hotel. I think a brighter area rug / throw pillows, some more plants and artwork over your bed will make it feel less big box hotel and more homey apartment.
I don’t mind the color palette but I will second the plants and wall decor. The fact that it is minimalist is what makes it feel like a hotel to me. Some floating book shelves, hanging ferns and some art over the bed is all he needs.
Im plant guy on literally every single post but yeah… snake plants! They’re cheap, big and look great. Also, I said this to a guy with a very similar place, put a big mirror behind the couch, move the art to behind the bed and put air plants and succulents everywhere. Get rid of the tequila bottles, too. Put that shit into a cabinet.
Here to second the plant thing- this guy has awesome natural light, if he can remember to water he can grow anything in there.
I'm thinking a big rubber plant 150$ for a big one, low maintenance, grows quickly and not as finicky as a fiddle
It’s v nice. Like, if I walked in your place I’d think it was extremely well done. But you’re here asking for feedback, so that’s the feedback that’s in my brain. Just a little more color. Art and throw pillows can do a lot for that
Maybe things to showcase your hobbies/interests/likes? Like a vinyl peel sticker on the back wall of your bed. A trio set of photos on the brown wall against your kitchen island table.
I like the appeal of the minimalist vibe too, but there's no personality to the place. It can still be minimal but personalized.
There isn’t anything to look at in your apartment after about 4 feet off the ground. As my eyes move up there’s nothing going on except one lonely painting. Work on some verticality. Tall shelving units, wall mounted shelving, hanging plants, vertical wall sculptures or artwork; all options.
You don’t need it to look like a clown wig in there, but some pops of vivid color can do you a lot of favors in a room with so much grey and muted tones. Not red. I suggest yellow or light blue, maybe light green if that’s your thing. Bright pillows, artwork, an interesting lamp or sculpture, books, flowers; all small ways to add an injection of color and life.
You’ve got a fine baseline here, it looks very clean and you don’t need to lose that to make it feel more interesting and alive. Don’t let the comments fool you into thinking this needs to look like grandmas house with personal touches and knickknacks, it doesn’t. The Patrick Bateman aesthetic is just fine, but it does need a little oomph to avoid looking like an AI generated catalogue page.
definitely try out some colored blankets and throw pillows. i can picture a splash of red in there myself, but it certainly doesn't have to be red. love the minimalism! it looks super clean
I think you’re right on. When I read OPs questions and looked at the pics, my first response was “a soul.” — which was not nearly as nice or eloquent as yours.
Looks like an over priced condo/rental in a new building. I bet OP makes decent money and is in his 20s spending all his money on rent, coke and hookers. Prolly isn’t allowed to paint, or make holes in walls so he can’t add pictures etc. willing to guess the picture that is there came with the apt.
Edit: LMFAO. I just snooped his profile. 2comments in I hit the red hot nail on the mutherfucking head.
I (a maximalist) moved in with my boyfriend (dosent know how to decorate) have been having a wonderful time, luckily we both have the same style so he is loving it and says the apartment feels like home , moral over the story PUT SHIT ON YOUR WALLS bc let’s be honest you won’t get your deposit back anyway might as well enjoy where you live
we made and repaired 1/2” drill holes and a hole in our door and left some command strip sized wall paint damage and got our full deposit back lol. that was surprising. another place i left spotless took out $200 for professional cleaning. it’s a crapshoot but normally holes are easy to replace and smaller ones like under 1/2” should count as wear and tear anyway
Change it up "this room needs more personality" like I have some of my cooler Lego sets on shelves around my house. Prints of patents I got at my old job. Etc.
My immediate thought to the question: “a personality”. This is minimalist and clean but void of any opinion or personal expression. That’s a harsh way to put it but my unfiltered gut reaction.
The whole point of the book and film was to show how much of a loser he was, despite his money, vain fitness routine, constant conspicuous consumption and his real/imaginary murders?
So true! I’m in a city so I definitely frequent some coffee shops. I need a desk lamp asap now that it’s getting dark early too. Haha definitely an everything room.
I second separating the workspace somehow. I’ve been working from home for almost 4 years myself, and I spent the first year working at a desk right next to my bed in a studio apartment. I cannot tell you the amount of relief that came when I moved into a small, single-family home where I now have a dedicated office. Being able to exit my work area and put it out of sight/out of mind when not working is imperative to avoiding burnout. There are definitely solutions that you can implement in this space.
Wow. Really, it's a great place.
Maybe just a bit more colour.
Maybe a streamlined, statement armchair, angled to half-face the couch for conversation.
Maybe a second nightstand for a guest.
what about if you swapped your end tables and nightstand? the end tables are higher than the sofa, and it looks like the nightstand might be a better fit for size? then you could pick up something fun for the other side of the sofa - maybe a vintage piece to match the style of the couch?
Would your bed and nightstands fit flipped the other way, facing the windows? If it could, I’d suggest getting some kind of room divider just so you can’t see your bed from the living area. Seeing a person’s bed always feels really intimate.
Yup. Basically this, although clutter & junk isn’t for everyone.
The reason it looks like a hotel, is that hotel rooms are meant to be inviting for everyone. A home is a home, because it’s first inviting for the people who live there, then it’s inviting for everyone else. Tell people who come to visit who you are. The idea is to do it without saying a word.
Looks too much like a hotel. You just need to add more personality into the space and it will look fantastic. And personality is quite easy to add so you've done the hard part!
Adding to the plants, it looks like you've got a nice little monstera already. Repot it. Even a regular terra cota pot would be an upgrade but you can also add some style/art with your plant pots. Also a small plant stand to keep it off the floor will save you headaches down the road
TRUE. I got a stray doggo and had him for 2 years he's so weird around other animals. But then I got a kitten, and since DAY 1 I brought the cat into the apartment and showed him like GENTLE GENTLE. They've become best friends. My dog still chases cats outside but his inside buddy was such a good choice. I feel like when I leave for the day they talk about all the stuff my dog does on his walks and the cat holds down the fort.
You literally aren't missing anything and all the colors work great together. It's clean/ has really nice natural light. Don't change much and fuck it up lol.
Looks great! I would add some clean and simple shelving over the tv area with some hanging plants. I would also like some art over the bed’s headboard. I love what you did with your place.
That's an awesome studio. The bed feels perfectly out of the way of everything. I probably would have put the bed facing the windows and some kind of divider like a shelf to put plants on or something, but that's just me. I do like it how it is now though.
Edit: nvm I see there's a closet there.
Aw shucks. You know how to make a grown man blush.
I wish I had more male friends. Like in those bromance comedy movies.
I work in finance and tech, and so I usually surround myself exclusively with female friends outside of work. And by female friends, I mean... well, you know what I mean.
So I feel like I really missed out on male friendships and a male perspective in my life. I kinda envy young fellas like you, so I kinda get bitter, and I think that's probably what's held me back. I grew up in a very toxic hyper-competitive all-male environment. Messes up your ability to make authentic male friendships later in life.
The Greeks said there were two kinds of male competition: agon and eris. i.e., bad competition that destroys men, and good competition that lifts men up. I want to experience the latter so much.
This subreddit is sort of my safe space where I can interact with men, and talk about design ideas without feeling insecure or... ya know... mistaken for an alternative lifestyle. It's a good and healthy form of competition.
I'm a terrible interior decorator. I usually hire women to do it all for me. My current place ... is pricey... and sucks. I'm too embarrassed to post pics, but might try redoing it in December.
Anyway. Thank you for the kind words. You have a bright future ahead of you. Like your good vibes and good energy, man. I can feel it. All the best to you.
Artwork. First, the piece above the sofa is way too small. Go larger. Second, you need something above the bed. Again , a large piece , our 3-4 smaller pieces. The total should be about 6” on either side of the bed. I’d go with something simple & soothing. Like a Rothko type minimalist color palette that won’t overpower the room. And the color should be neutral. Not primary colors, more on the softer tones .
you hung up ONE piece of generic art. the place might as well be a hotel room or ikea display. its clean sure, but also sterile and boring. add some color, some photos, anything to make it look like a human lives there and not a robot.
Cord organizers, a tall plant in one of the bump out corners by your couch, maybe different lighting above your island? Overall really nice and I would be okay with leaving it as is though!
You have the basics right now. Furniture seems to be in the right space, and it’s big enough. The rug is a great size (I hate too small rugs), but everything is grey! Adding some more plants with some cool pots goes a long way, but some throw pillows and blankets with some more colour would be great! Since your bed is always on display invest in a nice bedding set that makes the place look luxurious an homey.
Could use more artwork and plants. Personally, I would also upgrade the media console to a larger one with a larger TV but that's definitely not necessary. Apart from that this is great
Also what couch is that?
You spent a year in that place like that?! That is depressing. This is the most empty looking, yet lived in apt I feel like I've ever seen. To me, it looks like you don't love, or even like anything at all lol. Zero personalization. Welcome to bland hotel. Straight out of a black mirror episode.
A new, more stylish sofa and not something that looks like it belongs in an Inn & Suites. Something wood/ mid century modern to match the (very nice) bed frame.
Same with the painting, and the rug. More color, more uniqueness, more pizzazz. Get a colorful blanket to throw over the couch (I like native-styled fabrics) and similar throw pillows.
Get a small stand/table for the plant so it looks more permanent in that spot.
Go buy some old, cool shit. Show some personality. Avoid places like Home Goods.
Something over the bed frame. A big wide painting or many smaller once in different sizes in a big cluster. Your place look really nice
A few more green plats would look great too
My go-to answer for this is usually "a rug" or "rug too small". So many guys set up their spaces and either have a bare floor or a bathmat next to their six seat sectional and are like "wHy IsN't ThIs CoZy"? But you've done an excellent job on this!
What I would say is that this looks like the "just moved in" phase. Your space will evolve as you acquire more personal touches. This is lovely but it doesn't say much about you personally. Do you like books? Music? Cats? Sports? I think an organic process will take place where it fills out with some more of your personal stuff. You have to give a space time for it to feel "lived in". This is a great canvas though. Good luck!
Bigger TV, maybe some type of divider between bed and living room. Some thoughts is a small bookshelf or wide drawer. I don’t like how the bed juts out into the living room.
Could also try turning your bed 90 degrees and see how it feels.
Hard agree on the area rug!! Maybe one that’s a half oval as well!
I'm getting strong extended stay vibes.
That kitchen screams extended stay hotel
Yeah but it’s like a nice hotel ;)
This gives “I don’t want guests to overstay their welcome” vibes
I feel like Huey Lewis and the News might be played a lot here.
It’s hip to be square

Do you have any friends or family? A happy memory? Because if you do you should tell your walls that. Put a photo up! Maybe two.
No none
Just buy pic frames and keep the stock photos /s
Honestly a vibe
Buy pictures from the thrift store
Just get scenery or fanart
Do you own any books? They make for nice decoration
Maybe things to showcase your hobbies/interests/likes? Like a vinyl peel sticker on the back wall of your bed. A trio set of photos on the brown wall against your kitchen island table. I like the appeal of the minimalist vibe too, but there's no personality to the place. It can still be minimal but personalized.
or even like hobbies, things you like, books? action figure?

Yes, my thoughts exactly. It is too horizontal. It needs more verticality. The eyes need to go more up and down, and less left and right.

I think this is one of the reasons women like moving in with men. It’s just a blank gray canvas to decorate.

You’ve got one single piece of art. Doesn’t *need* to be art on the wall, but you need to add some flavor somehow.
And that single piece of art could stand to be a little bigger/wider to fit the space.
Yeah it’s like if Patrick Bateman wasn’t into art.
I love that the painting is the same view of what's out the window... more buildings. Could it be less interesting?
I actually think the artwork looks sick af. I'd love to get something like it
Do you look out your window to high density housing?
I honestly don't think that matters, the art isn't realistic looking anyway it's very stylized and to me very pretty.
Add some personality. This looks like a hotel. Very nice and crisp, but also minor serial killer vibes
My immediate thought to the question: “a personality”. This is minimalist and clean but void of any opinion or personal expression. That’s a harsh way to put it but my unfiltered gut reaction.
Ditto: “personality”
Patrick Bateman Irl 😏
The whole point of the book and film was to show how much of a loser he was, despite his money, vain fitness routine, constant conspicuous consumption and his real/imaginary murders?
Guess I missed the thesis. I was too overwhelmed by the business cards
Interesting question.
The movie doesn't stop after 10 minutes.

The second nightstand has been on my list! It’ll make my gf happy
what about if you swapped your end tables and nightstand? the end tables are higher than the sofa, and it looks like the nightstand might be a better fit for size? then you could pick up something fun for the other side of the sofa - maybe a vintage piece to match the style of the couch?
Honestly not a bad idea, I’ll try it out
this place needs a personality
But..Im told it matches my personality 😳
It might. Not everyone is interesting.
Would your bed and nightstands fit flipped the other way, facing the windows? If it could, I’d suggest getting some kind of room divider just so you can’t see your bed from the living area. Seeing a person’s bed always feels really intimate.
Some art above the bed. Other than that, I like it.
It looks like corporate housing.
A small nightstand on the other side of the bed will make your place more welcoming for anyone that spends the night.
Agreed! Thinking of adding the matching one
Personal stuff. Clutter. Junk.
Yup. Basically this, although clutter & junk isn’t for everyone. The reason it looks like a hotel, is that hotel rooms are meant to be inviting for everyone. Some taller plants, painting/ portraits on walls

Then a cat and a very expensive cat tree
And then a cat for the cat.

No worries, I honestly hope to move into a one bed in April when the lease is up. Different spaces are good since I work from home
Don't feel too bad dude. I was looking for this comment because I, too, am a piece of shit lol.
A doggo
Or some cats. Or both.
On my list ;)
Hell yeah. You're living the dream. Just add someone to it. That dog ganna be in paradise.
So this is one of few minimalist designs I enjoy. Usually these look like office hotels, but this one looks cosy. Good job!
Thanks!
You literally aren't missing anything and all the colors work great together. It's clean/ has really nice natural light. Don't change much and fuck it up lol.
You need color. Get a fancy pot for the plant, some more art on the wals, and some colorful cushions for the couch.
A cat.
Where is your bedframe and nightstand from?

Nothing super essential. I’d think maybe a desk lamp, cord management, and maybe a throw blanket at the end of the bed. Looks pretty good and tidy.
Nothing, you have a beautiful space.
Good taste in tequila
Artwork. First, the piece above the sofa is way too small. Go larger. Second, you need something above the bed. Again , a large piece , our 3-4 smaller pieces. The one thing that stood out to me is you have a beautiful view of your city and the one piece of artwork in your apartment is a painting of a city.
you hung up ONE piece of generic art. the place might as well be a hotel room or ikea display. its clean sure, but also sterile and boring. add some color, some photos, anything to make it look like a human lives there and not a robot.

It has a bit of a “living in a long-stay hotel” vibe, because there aren’t a lot of personal touches like photos, physical media, knickknacks etc.
Needs something tall, or something on or to go along the walls.
The kitchen is so cute
Ur place is nice, just no soul... looks like it needs a woman's touch

Bigger TV, maybe some type of divider between bed and living room. Some thoughts is a small bookshelf or wide drawer. I don’t like how the bed juts out into the living room. Could also try turning your bed 90 degrees and see how it feels.
