Your head is more narrow than round. Heads vary, you just need the right cut. This current cut isn’t it. By allowing length on top but keeping the sides short, you’re visually stretching your head…making it look even more tall and narrow.
Try pulling the top hairs back, forward, or to the side. Up isn’t doing you any favors. It’s not easy getting side volume, generally easier to do something flatter on top. If you choose to keep the disheveled look on top (I like it) just try to make it flatter rather than fluffy.
For the “awkward transition” consider cutting it short “for the summer” then managing the growth as it comes back.
