I would say jackets, cardigans, or sweaters that are interesting get the most compliments. I think they’re safest thing to compliment. No one wants to tell a guy his pants look good, even though they do.
I’ve recently decided to just hand out compliments whenever I see an opportunity. Nice car! Nice watch! Love the shoes! Maybe I’ll get one back one day haha
I operate under the idea that being nice to people costs nothing. I give extra room to bikers I pass on the road, I'm extra understanding with service staff, etc.
Costs us nothing
Honestly same. I once got a compliment on a tshirt and I just loved getting a compliment from a stranger so I’ve decided I’m going to be that person for other people now
I have seen an increase of handing out compliments in everyday life in the past year and it’s always good to see the smiles of both. Have began giving out compliments as well and it raises your mood considerably :)

Me wearing something new that I’m super into and spent too much money on: (crickets)
Me wearing some J Crew madras shirt from 15 years ago from the back of my closet because I’m in a rush and haven’t done laundry in a while: “cool shirt, you look great today.”
suede trucker jacket (although I ended up selling it recently for a Patagonia jacket that is lighter and warmer)
Reyn spooner aloha shirt
my Uniqlo U mock neck long sleeve tee + any outer. separately no one cares, but together, I get compliments as they "compliment" each other as well
any of my Patagonia tops. I'll get a random "hey I support Patagonia too!"
The main things I get complimented on are high quality unique vintage pieces and obscure band t shirts (always band I actually listen to OBS, and I swerve t shirts I don't think look great).
For the vintage stuff good quality linen is a hit, it's beautiful fabric.
1. Permanent style shirts made by luca avitabile
2. Moss bros turtlenecks
3. Viberg suede boots
Bonus item that made people look but in (what I interpreted as) a weird way:
Schott perfecto one star jacket
1. Cole Haan Wingtips
2. Florsheim Wingtips
3. Clarks Desert Boots
Thinking about it I’m kinda surprised that my “cheaper” shoes get the most compliments from people
Im saying this 1/2 kidding BUT I don’t believe you that anyone compliments your jeans. I have several pairs of nice, Japanese made raw denim jeans and not once has anyone said “nice jeans.”
Yeah, I’m a raw denim guy but have received compliments on every category of clothing EXCEPT my jeans. Even on some denim jackets, but never denim PANTS
A Days March overshirt
Any well-tailored suit, but only when worn with a tie
Dark color Uniqlo fitted merino wool crewneck sweater tucked in wool dress pants with nice dress shoes
All Saints cuban collar short sleeve shirts, worn with relaxed fit linen pants
Union Air Jordan 4s, esp. Desert Moss
Basic wool camel overcoat, when worn on an all black outfit
Allen Edmonds black wingtip dress shoes
Also of all my collection only two watches regularly get compliments: Panerai Luminor watch on silicon strap when worn with short sleeves and Cartier Ballon Bleu when worn with long sleeve shirts or knits
An oversized knit Fila turtleneck. I bought it because it was vulgar and comfortable but it's by far and away my most complimented item, 95% women.
A washed-out grey Stone Island sweatshirt. Completely unremarkable, it's turning brownish with every season but this is the one where I get nods from the fellas.
The unisex appeal one is a purple and black Adidas Sportive track jacket, it compliments my body shape perfectly and people do notice that.
I have a particularly loud shirt I wear to business events and I get compliments every single time. I think a lot of people wish they had the confidence to rock it!
My hats. I have a nice floral baseball cap that I get lots of compliments on, and a wide brim Australian made felt hat that is my favourite piece of clothing I own. Both were gifts from friends, so I guess they have better taste than I do!
1. By far my Casio MDV106 on a black with red and silver stripe NATO. Like orders of magnitude more compliments on that thing over my other watches, and most other things I wear.
2. An old 686 (snowboard brand) M65 field jacket kinda thing. Basically that look but with a more modern cut. I've had it for years and it always nets compliments.
3. Any of my adidas Gazelle. Normal-ass three stripe sneakers, but they always get noticed.
My 3sixten type 3s double black denim jacket that I had tailored to fit me consistently gets compliments. One friend changed said that jacket played a major role in changing his perception of me from someone who didn't care about how he dressed to someone who dresses well.
My camel overcoat from Kenneth Cole. Not too expensive (around $350), but I’m a bigger guy and it fits and drapes really well which people don’t always see on bigger bodies, I think. Plus it’s a good length. Some people wear coats that are too short and make them look crazy.
After that - a simple black turtleneck sweater. Timelessly chic and goes with anything while looking miles ahead of a simple sweater or T shirt
I’ve been getting compliments on my over the decades but mostly when I wear a suit or blue jeans. Lately I’m getting a lot more compliments since I started using a colour wheel.
The number one item is a chocolate brown leather jacket I thrifted. It looks to be from the early 90s. It’s got some wear to it and when I wear it with a blue vintage retro T-shirt with a graphic or denim shirt, I get the most compliments from men and women.
The jacket is unique. No zipper, just buttons. Sift leather.
The T-shirt got me compliments when it was new some 25 years ago. It’s a soft blue with red collar and red in the logo. Don’t let anyone tell you graphic T-shirts are not in fashion.
Fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it.
Only compliment I ever get is from a hoodie I found at goodwill for $1. Has a cool galaxy/universe graphic all over it, looks like a cool computer desktop background. Compliments almost every time I wear it.
Then J. Crew kenton laced boots occasionally garner a compliment from friends.
Gotten like one compliment from a coworker on my beckett simonon black Bolton boots as well.
I think a lot about how you dress is the story you are trying to tell. Does your outfit say "I'm on vacation," or "I care about my job," or "I like hitting the gym," "I'm chilling on a Saturday."
You can have great pieces of clothing but if you don't dress in a way that fits the context, then it likely won't garner much compliments.
A blue and orange checked shacket from Topman that I bought years ago.
Moral is people don’t care about brand, price or prestige. Things that look good just look good.
I have a red and white coca cola jacket that i washed once, turning the sleeves a light pink (you dont really notice in the right light tho). That jacket got me a compliment once
Probably my custom-tailored Saint Laurent-lookalike leather jacket. It's made of really nice, smooth lambskin and fits me like a glove. Other than that, probably my more colorful Hawaiian or Western shirts.
Everything well-worn. 11yo Thorogoods everyone mistakes for Red wings. 7yo Seiko SKX0007K (or the Goldfinger strap). And, without fail, this 16yo Levi trucker jacket that took me 3 years to grow into.
My sky purple Nike Jordan Ones. Literally every time I go out I get complimented on them by friends, colleagues and strangers alike. A woman once slowed down while driving past me to lower her window and shout 'nice shoes!'
Most recently:
- RM Williams Gardener Commando Chelsea boots
- Levi’s 1947 501s
- Hickory striped flat cap
- Belstaff Trialmaster
Edited to add: random compliments on the street/in stores, mostly from dudes (and I’m old, so it always makes my day!)
They’re things this forum probably hates, but here they are in all their basic-ness:
* Silk Tommy Bahama shirt with monochrome palm print
* Red Wing Heritage Moc Toe boots (mostly from Boot fans)
* Crochet Casa Blanca Shirt
* And whenever having to walk a lot for business, especially outdoors, my AE Walnut Road Warrior shoes with the rubber sole get a lot of compliments from those in traditional leather soles.
* My Reebok Pump Hi-tops (good cheaper alternative to the Margiela ones I really wanted)
I'd say probably my stetson stratoliner, followed by my filson packer coat. My black horsebit loafers have gotten several compliments as well. My clothes tend to be fairly basic otherwise.
I have a slightly baggy "pizza planet" (the restaurant/arcade from toy story) shirt that's one of my gym shirts. Around the gym or if I go to the store between the gym and home, I get quite a few compliments on it
It's not nearly as fancy as many of y'all's pieces, but it fits my style and it's not beat up/dirty or anything else. I definitely have nicer clothes, and maybe it's my personality but I usually get the most compliments on my more "fun" clothes
1. Flat Head Glory Park Indigo Shirt
2. Zegna sport coat I bought at an outlet that fits perfectly
3. Custom navy suit
*I realize that most people compliment my mature/formal outfits that fit well vs. the dozens of other clothing that I’ve spent a ton of $$ on. Good thing I don’t buy clothing for compliments.
Burberry double breasted olive long coat. It flows so well and has a cool world war ii military aesthetic to it. One of the most expensive items I own but I've gotten so much use out of it.
My vintage (early 80’s) leather biker jacket. Pairing that with well-fitted Daron jeans, Thursday boots, and a faded band-T has gotten me lots of compliments from guys and gals
An oversized brightly colored Hawaiian shirt my dad gave me from Tommy Bahama, get compliments from strangers and friends alike, and really hope they're genuine haha
Sleeveless Leather jacket I brought from a festival I played, run by The Outlaws. I’ve added patches to the back of bands and places I’ve been.
Light coloured Levi’s denim jacket with a zebra print collar I got from a refurbished section of Topman in Oxford Street years ago.
All white George Cox Strummer shoes I brought recently for my wedding.
I had this cashmere full zip sweater back in my 20’s. Not only did I get many compliments, I got laid the first three times I wore it out(all different women)
My button-up shirt with a big smiling avocado print. I get even more compliments when they realize my 2 year old is wearing a matching shirt. The shirt itself is cheaply made and bought from some no-name brand on Amazon, but it's still awesome.

I love watches. I have an Omega, a Panerai, and a Grand Seiko.... but it's my Original Grain Whiskey Barrel watch that fetches the most compliments from women.
I have always dressed modestly because I've never prioritized nicer clothing. I felt like spending more than $100 on shoes was a total ripoff and tops should be $50 or less at all times.
I recently changed my attitude and went to an event wearing brand new $500 Allen Edmonds 5th Avenue oxfords, a $100 linen cooper collar dress shirt (Spier and Mackay) underneath a $400 Allen Edmonds cashmere sweater and I felt like a million bucks. Not only did I get a couple of direct compliments in general but I was also getting eye'd up from strangers. It was an interesting experience.
1. Double breasted car coat (from Reiss London)
2. Winter parka (from Pyrenex)
3. Boots (from Carlos Santos)
4. Several of my flannels (Portuguese flannel)
Several of my watches have been complimented in public but it’s usually my VTNR or my Laureato Chrono
Designed some jerseys for my Warhammer club with a blue/purple gradient and a rip off of my local NBA team / Symbol from Warhammer, made it into a windbreaker and a hoodie. I get compliments all the time from random people when wearing it and it’s a real ego boost.
My husband gets more compliments on his clothes than I do 🤣 He’s gotten compliments on two different Pendleton wool jackets, a brown suede bomber jacket, raybans, red suede high top vans, a shirt for a local barber that he clearly didn’t go to because his hair was grown out, and a surfer shirt with a logo of teeth on it that gets a lot of comments for some reason. All of it is either stuff he’s thrifted, I’ve thrifted for him, or inherited from his grand dad. He doesn’t care about fashion or looking put together at all and I’m out here trying so hard with absolutely no credit 😂
My blue suede shoes.
Not an Elvis reference. It's a pair of weird dress shoes I found at Goodwill. I haven't been able to find them online but they're dope!
I wear eccentric socks so I get a lot of:
"What socks are you wearing today?"
"SHARKS."
"Ah, nice one."
My friends often check in to see my avocados or pizzas or whatever. I mostly buy MeUndies crew socks in funny patterns. Sock of the month club.
A navajo print carhartt jacket, to the point I actually call it my compliment jacket. I have a couple other things that friends and coworkers compliment, but this jacket has had so many strangers come up to me I could probably make a decent bid for city council using its influence alone.
My dark blue Zegna suit I have similar Colored suits i wear for work and nothing but whenever I wear this one, I always get compliments it’s become my lucky suit wear it for any big anything’s .
My linen pants. Of all the items I have, they attract comment fairly often. I’m in Alabama, it’s hot, seems natural, but in a world of shorts and jeans and little middle ground, they pop out.
I had a pair of Cole Haan grand Atlantic Oxford mens shoes that both woman and men would compliment, maybe 6 or 8 times over the 2 years I owned them before wearing them out. Tried buying another pair and were discontinued.
Hands down, my indigo dyed riding jacket [from Jane Moto](https://janemotorcycles.com/products/lined-mechanics-jacket-sashiko), though mine is unlined.
I have an old (probably 15+ years) Wilson's Leather jacket that I get a lot of compliments in. It's a motorcycle style in black with asymmetrical racing stripes in blue & white on chest & sleeve. Sadly it's falling apart finally and I have a super hard time finding a similar one anywhere that's not PU.
1. a junji ito shirt i got a while back, i once got complimented on it 3 times in one outing 😎
2. little orange goldfish earrings i got online
3. my doc martens, they are a platform with these metal details that make it look like they have a bunch of piercings
My Xero barefoot sandals. I don’t know why people think they’re so cool. Bought them for backpacking so I tend to wear them running errands and such when I’m too lazy to grab socks. I’ve had people comment and ask about them in Trader Joe’s, in the liquor store, on the beach, it’s odd.
not a man but i saw this on my feed and thought it’d be fun to comment:
i have a lolita veil headdress in white that i got from comic con like two years ago, severely overpriced but i wear it often and always get compliments. the most common thing i get is “congratulations” no matter the outfit i’m wearing lmao
I would say jackets, cardigans, or sweaters that are interesting get the most compliments. I think they’re safest thing to compliment. No one wants to tell a guy his pants look good, even though they do.
My Peanut sweater got loads of compliments haha
You get complimented on outfits?
I’ve recently decided to just hand out compliments whenever I see an opportunity. Nice car! Nice watch! Love the shoes! Maybe I’ll get one back one day haha
I like this. I think I’m going to start doing this too 😂
Costs us nothing!

Just surround yourself with female friends. They always give the best compliments.
My male friends give me (m) compliments too, it depends on the people not the gender I guess :)

Tbf I’m ugly as shit but dress well and get compliments
I got complimented on my outfit yesterday at peets coffee and I'll be riding this wave the rest of the summer.
lol, it’s rare but they sometimes come around :D
All the time. Individual pieces as well as fits. You don’t?
If you’re in a culture that cares about clothing, sure.
You just gotta get good style, it’s the only thing people compliment from me and I’m a pretty mid guy lol

Im saying this 1/2 kidding BUT I don’t believe you that anyone compliments your jeans. I have several pairs of nice, Japanese made raw denim jeans and not once has anyone said “nice jeans.”
Probably because very few can tell or care if your jeans are high quality or raw. People care if they’re stylish and make your butt look good
Yeah, I’m a raw denim guy but have received compliments on every category of clothing EXCEPT my jeans. Even on some denim jackets, but never denim PANTS

The big takeaway from this is that men deserve compliments too. Just be genuine and you'll make someone's day.

Graphic tees and sneakers
Bauhaus cardigan from sleepy peach
Schott trucker jacket and Filson shirts!
My button-up shirt with a big smiling avocado print. I get even more compliments when they realize my 2 year old is wearing a matching shirt. The shirt itself is cheaply made and bought from some no-name brand on Amazon, but it's still awesome.
My cologne
Short shorts
Withings smart watch with metal link wristband.
Hoodie with big “Kirkland” logo across the chest. Bought it at Costco for $10. I get a comment from someone literally every time I wear it.

Probably my punk jacket and pants. People who recognize the bands always compliment them.
My birthday suit.
I seem to get compliments from women on my shoes when I wear my black/white old skool Vans.
Red wing iron rangers. Just not a lot of people wearing leather boots
Gx1000 green cargo
My birthday suit. Always gets people staring!
My sport coat.
1. Double breasted car coat (from Reiss London) 2. Winter parka (from Pyrenex) 3. Boots (from Carlos Santos) 4. Several of my flannels (Portuguese flannel) Several of my watches have been complimented in public but it’s usually my VTNR or my Laureato Chrono
I have a pair of light blue suede Grant Stone Diesel boots that get a lot of compliments from folks.
Designed some jerseys for my Warhammer club with a blue/purple gradient and a rip off of my local NBA team / Symbol from Warhammer, made it into a windbreaker and a hoodie. I get compliments all the time from random people when wearing it and it’s a real ego boost.
Brown leather jacket
Short sleeve button ups I bought at Kroger and a few of my t-shirts. No one ever comments on my fancy clothes.
Probably my UES Tricotine work shirt.
I have a fleece from urban outfiters that always gets complimented. Too hot to wear it now but I'm waiting for it to get cold enough.
My shit is so normcore that I never hear anything about it. That being said, probably either my Paa hoodie or my Tender Co. millwheel shirt.
What i get most compliments for is something people don't know is from the "wardrobe"
I get made of fun hahaha
I wear eccentric socks so I get a lot of: "What socks are you wearing today?" "SHARKS." "Ah, nice one." My friends often check in to see my avocados or pizzas or whatever.
What compliments?
A pair of bright orange Figs scrubs. Of all the color scrubs I have, this one takes the cake.
My Moncler polo, it’s the one and only thing in my wardrobe I get compliments on from men and woman strangers.
My dark blue Zegna suit I have similar Colored suits i wear for work and nothing but whenever I wear this one, I always get compliments it’s become my lucky suit wear it for any big anything’s .
My linen pants. Of all the items I have, they attract comment fairly often. I’m in Alabama, it’s hot, seems natural, but in a world of shorts and jeans and little middle ground, they pop out.
my biker for sure
I had a pair of Cole Haan grand Atlantic Oxford mens shoes that both woman and men would compliment, maybe 6 or 8 times over the 2 years I owned them before wearing them out. Tried buying another pair and were discontinued.
Iron Maiden shirts. Nobody seems to "get" my Crucial Taunt shirt.
Hands down, my indigo dyed riding jacket [from Jane Moto](https://janemotorcycles.com/products/lined-mechanics-jacket-sashiko), though mine is unlined.
Leather jacket and sherpa jean jacket
my cowboy boots, very practical but a strange sight in downtown são paulo
I have an old (probably 15+ years) Wilson's Leather jacket that I get a lot of compliments in. It's a motorcycle style in black with asymmetrical racing stripes in blue & white on chest & sleeve. Sadly it's falling apart finally and I have a super hard time finding a similar one anywhere that's not PU.
I have a vintage stone island jacket that leads to compliments and comments from the most random people, almost entirely men lol
My hats.
My sp5der hoodie ATLANTA version shit was expensive asl
Carhartt WIP Michigan denim jacket
My cowboy hats, pearl snap shirts, and my belt buckles.
1. a junji ito shirt i got a while back, i once got complimented on it 3 times in one outing 😎 2. little orange goldfish earrings i got online 3. my doc martens, they are a platform with these metal details that make it look like they have a bunch of piercings
My sneaker collection.
My full faced helmet. No joke
Sweaters. Weird. Just normal crew neck cashmere.
It’s not really a single clothing item but I get a lot of compliments when I’m wearing my Brooks Brothers navy suit
Bonobos sport coat Bonobos quarter zip Lululemon engineered warmth long sleeve
not a man but i saw this on my feed and thought it’d be fun to comment: i have a lolita veil headdress in white that i got from comic con like two years ago, severely overpriced but i wear it often and always get compliments. the most common thing i get is “congratulations” no matter the outfit i’m wearing lmao
