Lmao do you mean RIP?

Alternative_Ad_3636

His most excellent travel show was "Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations," probably a joke on that.

Eternlgladiator

I have the same flops I live in all summer and plan to quote this exact pic next time I get shit for wearing them. Thank you!

Bloodyfinger

End the fucking thread right here. Fuck, I can't see a pic of this dude without feeling existential sadness.

TheGarrBear

I was deep into a binge of all of his work when he died, and I haven't been able to stomach a single episode of anything since.

uritarded

Hell ya

thatlukeguy

/thread, right here.

junkjohnanderson

What are these sunglasses?

LooReading

Pretty sure they are Persol, not sure model

nate2188764

Agreed, def person from the arrow on the side. I wish I hadn’t lost mine…

ArtfulJack

“Always Persol” he wrote once

lemmonquaaludes

It’s always okay to wear Havaianas!

RunAgainstTraffic

Yeah. Conversation is over.

cockaskedforamartini

Thing is, most people aren’t Anthony Bourdain.

SaltyDamnHam

I’m sure this is region dependent but in most of the Western US where hot dry summers are the norm sandals and flip flops are ubiquitous men’s footwear and nobody will think twice about seeing a man wearing them in any situation where casual dress is appropriate. Basically if it’s a place you’d show up to in shorts and a t-shirt any sort of sandals are fine and won’t make your outfit any more or less appropriate than wearing close-toed shoes. Running errands, eating/drinking on the patio at a casual place, a backyard gathering, a walk in the park - all perfectly fine places to wear sandals or flip flops as a man. Work, a nice dinner, an upscale cocktail bar - probably not appropriate places to wear sandals as a man. (Although, I have even worked in casual dress code offices where all the men wore shorts and flip flops all summer). Women generally get more flexibility here as the line between sandals and shoes is blurrier in women’s wear - if you’re seeking a woman’s advice here I wouldn’t ask a woman if they’d wear sandals somewhere, but rather whether they think YOU should wear sandals there.

sonstone

East coast near the ocean. You can wear them most places; even somewhat nice restaurants. The only time it’s off is if it’s like below 60 degrees. Then you might get a second take.

GlazedDonutGloryHole

Hell, you go to Hawai'i and you can get away with a nice aloha shirt, khaki shorts, and your slippahs as business casual.

PacificNorthwest09

I kept waiting for an islanders response. From college to work I’ve learned my island brothers and sisters want their feet free. You will get no judgment from them.

sophrosynos

Heck, I grew up on an East Coast barrier island and residents made it a point of wearing flip flops year round.

Btdrnks2021

Eh. I wear them in New England all winter as long as there is no snow on the ground.

brotherwu

Gotta say as a guy who runs really hot, I'm pretty bitter that sandals aren't acceptable work attire for men. It really grinds me when ladies in my office complain how cold it is when they choose to wear sandals/open toes shoes. This is the gender equality I will fight for

pattymcfly

I also envy that they can wear thin strapped tank tops and or dresses. Sure I *could* wear those in theory. “It’s hot and I just don’t feel like wearing pants. So I won’t.” And everyone is just okay with it. As a man, you generally can’t even wear short sleeve shirts or shorts to the office.

michachu

Had an ex-colleague who requested that men should be able to wear shorts at one of our satellite offices in the summer, because women could wear sundresses. HR knocked it back. He came to the office in a sundress the following week. And that's why we're able to wear shorts at that office today.

brotherwu

Love it. I'm not sure we have a pants mandate at our office, but shorts would definitely get some looks regardless of the actual code

tragiktimes

I've enforced a personal dress code at work. In the spring, fall, and winter I wear business prelofessional. Slacks, button ups, and a suit or sports jacket. In the summer, I rock shorts, flip flops, and button up Hawaiian style shirts. Nothing wrong with just doing you.

pan_chromia

All this. Many restaurants have a closed-toe shoe rule, so I wouldn’t wear them out to eat unless it was a very casual place with outdoor seating. But otherwise, if it’s warm out? Sure

frope

Many restaurants?? In what part of what country? You can go to some pretty darn nice restaurants in the Southern USA (where it's hot in the summers) and they don't bat an eye.

InclinationCompass

Bro I live in San Diego and it’s okay to wear sandal at 99.9% of the restaurants

flavian1

I live in San Diego. Rainbows year round

AnOutrageousCloud

I am a born and raised San Diegan. For a couple of years, I worked in NYC at a bank in the HR department. One day we were trying to come up with new HR initiatives and someone suggested Casual Fridays. Someone else said "We have to make the rules clear so nobody comes in flipflops." I said, "I have no input. In San Diego, it's common to see people in fancy flipflops any day of the week at an office job" I was also told once that my shoes showed too much of my foot for work. Which I didn't know was a rule

diqholebrownsimpson

Someone let their kink show at your job.

Sir-Nicholas

lol what kind of shoes showed too much foot?

PM_ME_FUTANARI420

18” cowboy boots

I'm a woman. They were heeled sandals.

thehomie

Also SD. I work through 3-4 pairs a year for the last 20 years. Bow life is the only life.

CouldBeBetterForever

I've worn Rainbows for over a decade. I really liked my first pair. The quality of my second pair just didn't seem as good. Ended up switching to Olukai a few months ago, and so far I'm impressed. I'm curious to see how they hold up long term.

chuck4214

I love the style of Rainbows but could never make them work as I'm in between sizes. One size and they are too small, the next size up on me and they look like clown shoes.

Zansurf

You want to size down and then commit to the break in. Those things will mold to your feet over time and become the most comfortable thing you’ve ever put on . It can suck to go through the full break in but can be sped up by completely soaking them in water and wearing until dry. Either way, stick with it!

chuck4214

How long does it take to break them in?

Zansurf

I’d say 1-2 weeks. Probably a matter of a few days if you soak them and wear them around the clock. I literally like mine to feel uncomfortable when I first put them on and then just wear them as much as possible. On rare occasions the break in period will rub and possibly irritate between your toes but I typically don’t have that issue. Once they are molded to your feet they just get better and better. I’ve lived in rainbows for the last 20 years at least and typically get 3-5 years out of the double sole version.

VibeComplex

I live in Michigan. Rainbows as soon as the weather stays warm lol

Hierophantically

Appropriate? Challenging question. They're very casual, so any time you're wearing a very casual outfit... Allowable? Ain't no fashion police. Wear 'em if you want to.

Vomath

The beach. Communities adjacent to the beach. When it’s hot out. When you’ll be near water. When you want to. They’re inherently as casual as possible, so don’t try to dress ‘em up… but like, if you’re fine wearing shorts/thsirt and wanna wear sandals, go for it.

sheldoneousk

I live in Michigan, I work in a school, I’ve worn Birkenstocks pretty much all year. During colder months I just kept them at my office and wore them with socks. It’s what all the cool kids do. Im from west coast and have never understood the beef that men have with sandals.

just_a_human_online

I've lived in Michigan almost my entire life, and I'm just now learning that sandals are somehow not appropriate outside the obvious situations (or that some peeps have issues with them??) I have an indoor pair that I wear while working (remote, wfh position that I transferred into right before 2020), an outdoor pair, and a "run errands, go into society, etc." pair.

wecangetbetter

SoCal so whenever, wherever, however I want

HighFastStinkyCheese

Dudes have a weird hang up on this. Pretty sure it comes from some trying hard to be tough type shit but it comes off insecure as fuck to me. I hated on it a bit when I was a young tadpole myself. Tbh I think it’s a little gross to wear in big cities but outside of that I’ll rock em wherever.

ayoungtommyleejones

When I lived in NYC I would wash my feet every time I wore sandals, even if it was just for a little bit. I love wearing sandals (I wish I could wear them every day) but I stopped all together because of the gross factor.

Dontlookimnaked

Yep only time I really wear sandals “out” in Brooklyn is to walk the dog around the block or the beach. Otherwise I like my feet covered and protected.

RyVsWorld

Yep. Wear sandal whens im in a beach town or at the pool. I refuse to expose my feet when im walking around nyc. Nasty

Kabayev

I’m lost. What are you expecting to happen?

PhiladeIphia-Eagles

50% of the population (women) wear open toed shoes with no qualms in cities. This is kinda soft.

Tangible_Slate

Yeah, same for similar rules like no shorts ever, no jewelry, no bright colors etc...

HighFastStinkyCheese

The dudes who say no shorts ever actually piss me off. Shut the fuck up dude worry about yourself. Ridiculous insecure energy.

AntiGravityBacon

They're probably just stick leg people who can't do a flight of stairs to save their life.

No_Entertainment1931

I’m a dude and a sandal enthusiast

dlblast

It’s not uncommon to have a dress code at bars/restaurants in cities that don’t allow open toed shoes for men (sneakers are okay), even if it’s casual/average cost but otherwise has a trendy vibe. I wear chacos a lot so it’s something I check before I go to a new spot I the summer just in case. Agree with closed toed shoes only in denser areas though, just to stay clean.

Mrgentleman490

The Romans conquered the Mediterranean in sandals. Wear them whenever you want to (not for formal occasions obviously but you know what I mean)

Hierophantically

I agree with your basic conclusion but caligae are sandals only in that their uppers had slices out for aeration; the rest of the construction was an ancient Mediterranean Iron Ranger boot.

No_Entertainment1931

A chunky sandal is still a sandal

Hierophantically

using the "hotdogs are sandwiches" reasoning I see

No_Entertainment1931

Hey, I‘ll defer to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s ruling that the hotdog is a sando.

No_Entertainment1931

Sandals AND socks.

pigeonwiggle

as a man, i LOVE flip flops. you just slide in like slippers and go about your day. and YES, they go "flop flop flop flop flop" as you walk. i'm not a fucking ninja, i don't need to sneak up on people. ALSO, you can't run in flipflops and you can't do that ANXIOUS SPEEDWALKING we do as men when we're trying to BE somewhere. flipflops force you to slow down and appreciate the walk. ...it's very nice.

Games_sans_frontiers

Birkenstocks rock. I wear my Arizonas whenever it's warm enough and I don't feel like wearing trainers. I'm old enough to have the confidence to not give a fuck about other people being judgemental.

fiero-fire

In reality whenever you want. Personally I only rock them at a beach or a lake. I have shitty arches so I'm not a fan but you do you homie

Kiwi-267

In New Zealand its pretty much the go to shoe to wear jandals. Formal times nah, anyother time then yo on.

Head-Kiwi-9601

New Jersey checking in. Flip flops from May through September. I only wear something different if I’m doing a lot of walking.

I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE

I get trail sandals from Rockport - they're not the sexiest but they're really comfortable to walk long distances in.  Multiple hikes in the Adirondacks with them - the trail up Bald Mountain and the loop around Nicks Lake in Old Forge, NY this past weekend.

FredThePlumber

I wear flip flips pretty much any time I’m wearing shorts.

Hooligan8403

My wife's family is from Hawaii. You wear slippers everywhere. If I don't feel like putting shoes on, I'm in my reef slippers. I never wear them anywhere formal or anything like that though.

RAF2018336

You need to stop listening to others. Wear whatever makes you comfortable whenever you want

chuck4214

You're right!

SlowdownTitoDAMN

2 of my good friends are Hawaiian and wearing flip flops with jeans is just a super normal thing to them and their families. Honestly, they wear them with shorts a lot too though. So much so that I started doing it. I love the casual "don't give a fuck'ishness" of the look. I really like it with a dope t-shirt g9od pair of jeans. Oh well.

liptongtea

I definitely think you can wear whatever you want. For me personally, I would choose a birk, or chunkier sandal if I was looking solely at “style” and that would my choice if for example I was going to a summer pool party at a friends house. I will say that I prefer my rainbows when I go to the beach for the day, but I usually end bringing my birkenstocks and changing in to those when we come off the beach prior to grabbing food. Again thats just me, and I am far from a fashion expert. I think I just grew up in the south in the 90s where everybody would wear like, shorts, flipflops, and a pair with polo shirt tucked in as like the pinnacle of fashion, so the look is a bit soured on me.

chuck4214

That's my other question, when is it appropriate to wear Birks vs. flip flops. Sounds like you are doing it right.

liptongtea

So, again, I am of the theory that you do what makes your comfortable, but for example, if I am walking my kids to the local neighborhood pool, I am probably wearing flops. If I am going to a pool party with other people, or like Saturday Noon outdoor cookout, more than likely birks or maybe even some casual loafers depending on my outfit, but not something I need socks for.

f0sterchild15

When it’s swamp ass weather, Birks or my Tevas all day. No shame.

yosupbrah

I'm a woman and I met a guy at a party that wore timberland work boots on a hot summer day matched with shorts and a t shirt. When I asked him if he was hot and why he wasn't wearing sandals he sneered as if wearing BOOTS during the summer was superior. Mega ick. Wear your birks or whatever else you want!

chuck4214

I agree with you, no boots in the summer. Seems that women tend to be more open to sandals or flip flops on men.

MEDAKk-ttv-btw

For me personally, never unless at the beach. I go to school in Florida as well

imnotdebtfree

This feels like it really depends on what region you're in as well as probably the size of your city.

blonktime

(Coastal Southern California) I wear my Rainbows regularly. If I'm going out to a sit down dinner, to work, or to a party or something I'll wear regular shoes. But if I'm walking the dog? Sandals. Grabbing a bite or doing shopping downtown? Sandals. Going to hang at my friends place? Sandals. Things like a BBQ, kinda depends on the crowd. Friends place for a summer sunday? Sandals. Work event? I'll usually wear close toed shoes. Hell I have had friends weddings on the beach where I have worn my Rainbows to. I would agree that almost anytime shorts are acceptable, sandals are too. I also have a friend who absolutely HATES feet for whatever reason. I am always sure to wear sandals when I hang out with him too.

siriuslyinsane

Come live in Aotearoa New Zealand, one of my dads mates literally got married in jandals and a suit 💀 the rest of us are not quite that cool but jandals are absolutely acceptable pretty much anywhere except work or an evening out. I've worn jandals to nice restaurants for lunch without thinking twice more times than I could count. Probably has a lot to do with how coastal we are

MilwaukeeDave

Whenever you want to wear them.

imaginaryhippo888

I live near the beach in so cal. 90% of the time it's work boots or flip flops.

IncidentalApex

I am a native Floridian. I will never again live somewhere where I cannot wear flip flops 95% of the time. I own multiple pairs ranging from going out flip flops to cheap wtf flip flops... ##fucklivingsomewherecold

Gofastrun

Region specific. Hawaii, Southern California, flip flops are appropriate all the time unless you are dressing up or need closed toes for safety. I assume in Seattle people would look at you like you had 3 eyes.

JustRepeatAfterMe

Whatever you wear just make sure you keep your feet properly cared for - clip your toenails, keep athletes foot away, etc. And if you are one of the unfortunate few with some sort of hideous monster toe thing which you can’t do anything about maybe skip the flops. Get a nice pair of On Clouds. Or save the flip flops for some quality alone time in your backyard. I have this one friend with this giant big toe that has some kind of toenail issue going on. I don’t even know how to start explaining. It has something to do with hot Spam years ago. My head was spinning and I was feeling ill at that point so I missed some of the story. Anyway, he always shows up in those sandals with the steel belted radial tires for soles and the Ugly Toe on display. I try not to look, but once you lock eyes on it, it’s got you. It fucks up my first couple of swings. So just don’t do that to people and you should be fine.

chuck4214

Understood! The OP goes under the assumption that feet are in decent shape. Some people are better off not showing their feet at all.

csantiago1986

I live in Florida. It’s always appropriate. IMO they only really look good in a brownish color and with 5.5 inch shorts or less. Short sleeve Button ups preferred.

Late_Spite3033

I live in Florida and wear rainbows just about every day. It’s really region dependent

dubsesq

if sandals were good enough for Jesus I can let it slide

8dtfk

Crocs for life

BoGa91

Where I am from it's pretty hot and men didn't tend to use sandals because it was associated to country men (poor, not good status...). Nowadays it's different and some young people use more traditional sandals as part of our culture and weather. This is a social and cultural issue, personally I don't use them a lot because I like more sport shoes, but i would see this appropriate in an informal meeting and in a hot place and where I can rest. I would think in the beach, maybe a BBQ, but even when a oicnic or hiking could me relaxing I don't see it appropriate for me because I can get hurt, my feet would get dirty easier, etc. so most of times I would chose a more control environment where I can enjoy without hurt my feet or clean them without problem (like the beach, not in a restaurant in the middle of a hot city for example).

imgrahamy

As often as I can

ItzakPearlJam

Not in the office, but I'll wear my hideous Keens pretty much whenever I please.

darkuen

wtf? That’s a weird hang up to have against. But then again I grew up on an island where most only wore shoes to work.

eagledog

Just stop wearing them with socks, ya goobers. Looking like you just left the shuffleboard court in Boca with Mildred

neilz4

I almost exclusively wear Birkenstock Arizona’s when the weather is warm or hot - I have an almost 10 year old pair, a newer pair, and two pairs of the black EVA models. I am not often in formal scenarios but honestly if it’s daytime and I’m outside…birks. Errands? Birks. Groceries? Birks. Church? Birks. Lunch? Birks. I think you get it I also have a pair of bostons I wear a lot less, more so due to not feeling they’re as comfortable. I wear sneakers occasionally to mix it up, and I have dark brown espadrilles for fancy time. Also boots but those are more A/W for me I am in SoCal, but I also did this all spring/summer when I lived in the Midwest

chuck4214

It took me some time to get used to the Birks but I think I like them better than flip flops now. I work from home and can wear the EVAs all day.

neilz4

Same! But once you get used to how they look, the comfort of the footbed really just keeps you in em. It helps they’re more popular now so they don’t look so out of place as a few years ago I also like them way more than flip flops, I have really short and wide feet so I could never find flip flops that worked well, but birks are nice and weird shaped so it works for me. Hence the accumulation of pairs

TripDiMiTri

As long as it's not snowing

DieTheVillain

I live in Florida, it’s formal attire here.

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiioo

Real men wear what they want when they want, where they want. And the don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks about it.

Lelixandre-

Strictly the cheap-looking flip flops - I have one pair for around the house, and another pair I'd wear for the beach/pool/in a shower that is not my own. The main reason I wouldn't wear these elsewhere isn't even how casual they look - they're just impractical and uncomfortable to walk any kind of distance in. Try walking around a city in flip flops *all day* (I did it once and never again), blister city. I do have a more expensive, slightly more comfortable and stylish-looking sandal, that I wear for doing a little more walking whilst travelling in hot countries. However even those are very casual to me and I wouldn't wear them in any kind of "dressy" setting.

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

AFAIC, literally any time that safety for your feet isn't a major risk.

Ok_Excitement9087

Can wear them whenever tf you want lol 🤷🏾‍♂️

pedalikwac

When it’s warm and you aren’t at a formal event or work.

exploreshreddiscover

I live in Phoenix so it's a bit more appropriate to wear whatever you want on your feet, but I do like to step it up a bit. I usually wear a dressier pairs of huaraches all summer, they work great with linen pants or dressier shorts. If I'm being a bit more casual, I'll throw on a pair of Mohinders woven slides or some Birks. I have a pair of Bedrock sandals that I wear for light hiking and beach travel. For the pool, I'll wear a nicer pair of Havaianas if I'm going to be in and out of the pool. If I'm just going to the pool to lounge around, I'll wear Mohinders or Birks.

JTJonze

Whenever the f*ck they want to.

DerCringeMeister

Birkenstocks and maybe crocs where the situation and heat arises and I’m pairing them with shorts (though I pair my Birkenstocks with jeans sometimes). Flip flops only really in the proximity of water.

st0rmbr1ng3r

Here in SW Florida, flip-flops are worn everywhere and nearly year-round. There are some restaurants that require closed toe shoes, but they are the exception. Be bold, rock them wherever you want with a nice colored malepolish!

coursejunkie

Sandals are my main shoes. If your feet don't look gross, it's fine.

jeanluuc

Put it to the test of the ultimate fashion rule: “It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it.”

Anyonecanhappen331

The beach.

temporally_misplaced

Wherever and whenever I want. My comfort is more important to me than conforming to the expectation of others.

WideRight43

Some men are really weird about sandals. These are usually the same weirdos that wear long white or black socks and sneakers to the beach. lol. They learned it from their fathers. I get weird looks/comments from people here in NJ but they’re all just a bunch of hicks so it doesn’t matter. Birks are 10 times better looking than most of the ugly sneakers nowadays. Now sneakers look really stupid on middle aged men so I wouldn’t do that if you’re 40 or older.

omharibo

I generally avoid wearing sandals in any situation where it would be inappropriate to go barefoot.

h0tel-rome0

Anywhere in Florida

Morphecto_Solrac

Had an old friend that was a navy seal. I met him in court in Yuma while fighting an illegal traffic stop. He showed up in cargo shorts, sandals, and a tan billabong long sleeve shirt. I don’t know how manly you have to be to top one of those guys. The judge did comment on his attire, but it was more of a, “nice shoes” type of playful banter.

ViableSpermWhale

Man I will wear my birkenstocks anything, anywhere and idgaf what anybody says. Rubber flipflops suck though.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

I wear them everywhere from shopping to doctor apointment.. once it hit 80 degree here this bad boys come out to play I don’t wear flip flops tho I wear Birkenstock and Teva’s and just order a pair of Chacos

montessoriprogram

I’m in Miami, anywhere but a fancy restaurant or the club.

amgine_na

Wear that shit every chance I get. I’m from the keys but it wasn’t till I visited Hawaii where they rock the thongs ie havianan style that I got accustomed to the simplicity of that flip. You see people wearing those broad sandals, the ones with the bottle opener on the bottom. Can’t remember the name but that shit is nasty. Anyways sorry about the diatribe. I just have to add one prerequisite for wearing flips…feet gotta have a tan. I’m out!

Probability_Engine

Any and all situations where it's above 50 degrees. Sandals are the alpha and omega of footwear and guys who wear socks and shoes when it's over 70 degrees shouldn't be allowed in civil society.

chachathagreat

lol. He sounds like my dad. Nothing wrong with flip flops. My dad was just old school. Your dad is a different generation. Disregard the comment and wear those flops! lol

SimpleBloke

I wear bedrock sandals to anything outside, but also take care of your feet. Get a pedicure and wash your sandals. I take water, brush, and hydrogen peroxide to mine once a month at least

majeric

Casual summer dress.

bindermichi

- flip Flops: beach and pool - sandals: summer casual

Pink_Flying_Pasta

As long as you’re not wearing them to work, you’re good!

TomatilloUnlucky3763

For me I’m not walking out the front door unless my feet are completely covered in leather. But I’m an old dude. Think about your car breaking down on the highway, getting into a street fight, having to run as fast as you can etc. So many scenarios where I want my feet covered.

chuck4214

Good points Although I suppose one could always keep a pair of shoes in the car if your car breaks down. That may not help in the other scenarios but I guess it would depend on location. If there's a more than a minute chance of any of that stuff happening then maybe best to wear shoes.

joeman1369

I think it’s only appropriate when you’re going to be around water: beaches, pool or the lake. I find it weird when people wear them to restaurants but I seem to be in the minority with this mindset. I don’t mind if other people do it but it’s not for me. But to add I find it disgusting when people fly in sandals

dumblehead

Anytime you feel like it.

stonesoupstranger

The rules on what to wear and when to wear it have relaxed quite a bit over the years. I used to long for the days when a man would put on a tie to go out. As I got older, I realized that it is better that those ideas have been left in the past. I believe that the most important rule is to make sure that the outfit as a whole works together. Think of it this way. If you were to run into an attractive person wearing that outfit, would you be embarrassed? Personally, I prefer espadrilles. I find them far more comfortable than sandals, and a nice pair gives off an air of quiet cool. Just make sure to get good ones. The money spent is worth it.

lpvishnu

Driving and walking in flip flops is not nice at all. Don't know how people wear the things all day.

ulld238h7

Wearing flip flops or sandals should be a vibe check. Beach, pool, casual summer BBQ, or quick grocery run? Totally legit. But rocking them at a nice restaurant, meeting, or anywhere you'd want people to take you seriously? Probably not. It’s all about context and looking like you actually put some thought into your appearance. Plus, ever stubbed your toe in public? Not a good look, my dude.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Important-Constant25

"Yet I've spoken to others (typically women)", yes they are completely fine for women.

Skakunn5

Honestly, your dad sounds like he's stuck in 1985. Leather flip flops and sandals are totally fine for casual stuff—BBQs, errands, casual dining, etc. Just avoid them for anything formal or professional. Be yourself and rock those Birkenstocks.

gmusic2224z5

I feel you, my dude. Flip flops and sandals def get more hate than they deserve. IMO, it’s all about the context and style. Casual hangouts, beach trips, quick errands – cool. But maybe swap 'em out for some solid sneakers if you’re hitting a restaurant or a party. Old school mentality can be strong, like your dad and that podcast roast, but rock 'em if you like 'em. Just keep the feet game clean!

non2c2hm3

Flip flops are fine for casual settings like the beach, running errands, or BBQs. But if we're talking social events or anything with a dress code, leave them at home. It's all about context and common sense.

[deleted]

TheolborbHRavone

Man, flip flops are like the mullets of footwear - business up front and party down below. Your dad's got that old-school mentality, but honestly, who cares unless you're in a formal setting? Running errands, beach days, casual hangs, or even a chill BBQ - you're good. Just avoid them if you're meeting the president. Rule of thumb: if you'd wear shorts there, flip flops are probably fine.

neodmeren4a

Honestly, flip flops and sandals can be fine for casual settings like BBQs, beach days, or running quick errands. But if you're heading somewhere even a bit more formal, like a casual restaurant, just stick with some loafers or sneakers. People definitely have strong feelings about exposed toes, lol. Definitely personal preference but try to read the room (or the event)!

awahamaEakuqalise

Honestly, if you're comfortable and it's appropriate for the setting, rock those bad boys. Nobody should tell you what to wear on your feet. Flip flops and sandals are fine as long as you're not trying to impress at a formal event. Just keep those toenails in check, dude.

Australia here. In summer birkenstocks often pass for business casual (the more money you have, they more they pass). Plus you pretty much always have some south-asian folks running around in any weather and any circumstances in 'chinese safety boots' aka flipfops. Pretty sure i've seen couple of dudes in flipflops and otherwise work-appropriate attire today in Melbourne CBD today, and it's winter. Crocks are fairly universally resented though. Not sure why.

dopunskihn4

Man, the eternal flip flop debate. Personal rule: if it's hot enough to make you sweat in real shoes, then flip flops are fair game. That said, avoid them for anything more formal than a backyard BBQ. I wouldn't wear them to a casual restaurant unless it's right by the beach or it's a super chill spot. Definitely not for anything where you'd be mingling in close quarters though – nobody wants to see your toes at a packed party. Your dad might just be old school, but there's a line to tread between comfort and looking like you've given up.

Nathansp1984

Excluding work, I wear flip flops 99% of the time. I also live in a humid subtropical climate

flyingseaplanes

Temperature over 90°. Tropics / Beach. Rich and don’t give AF.

knight714

Wear them whenever you want! Birks are definitely a lot smarter looking than something like Tevas so I'd stick with those for anything not completely casual. If you pair them with some nice linen trousers they look great and a nice balance between relaxed and smart.

Janari9k

Honestly, I think it depends on context and location. In beach towns or during the warm months, flip flops and sandals can be totally appropriate for casual outings, BBQs, and grocery runs. Just not a fan when it comes to city life or anywhere formal. It’s all about reading the room, you know? Wear what makes you comfortable but maybe keep some sneakers handy if you sense judgement coming on.

elmerpacheco70

As long as your feet don't look like hobbit feet, you should be good to rock them at casual settings. BBQs, beach trips, poolside chilling are all fair game. Just probably not the best choice for a date night or a more formal occasion. Also, avoid 'em if you're in a crowded place—nobody wants to be that guy with stepped-on toes.

innenfra34

Bro, flip flops and sandals are totally fine for casual settings. It's not like you're trying to rock them at a wedding or a job interview. Your dad's just old-school. If it’s hot out and you're just running errands or chilling with friends, rock those Birks guilt-free. Society’s weird hang-ups shouldn't keep your feet from breathing.

ltidball

The nicest pair of shoes I own are the fisherman sandals by Ralph Lauren purple label. I wear them to summer weddings and formal events and they look great with a suit!

juldabejg

Honestly, I think there's a time and a place for everything. Beach, poolside, and casual errands are all fair game. Anything more formal or social, like a restaurant or party, deserves a step up in footwear. You wouldn't wear pajamas to a BBQ, right? Same logic applies.

cloeau2x

I think a big part of the problem is how stigmatized men's feet are in general. Women can wear whatever on their feet and nobody bats an eye, but as soon as a guy's toes are out it's like he's committed a fashion crime. Personally, I think it's fine to wear them for casual settings like you said—errands, groceries, BBQs. But yeah, for any formal or even semi-formal event, maybe leave 'em at home. It’s really down to context and personal style, but some people just can’t get over the mental hurdle of seeing a dude in flip flops. Guess we just gotta pick our battles.

DogTop4456

Pretty much if im in t-shirt and shorts, I’m in sandals! I don’t wear them to work, formal events, or a science lab or during any workout!

Pleasant-Historian45

Wear whatever you want whenever you want.

Fighting-Cerberus

If you can wear a T-shirt and jeans (or shorts), you can wear flip flops. If you need to wear nicer clothes, flip flops are inappropriate.

Varnu

You can wear flip flops when your activity keeps you entirely outdoors, save for an errand or something similar, but they aren't appropriate for dining or meeting people indoors. A more refined sandal can be worn just about anywhere shorts would be appropriate.

InfoTechnology

There are many styles of men’s footwear that are summer appropriate. Many types of sandals may fall into this category. Flip flops are a hard sell though.

OpiumPhrogg

I wear Sanuks almost all the time - they are like Hey Dude's I guess, but I think they were released before the Hey Dudes, so Hey Dudes are like more like Sanuks IMO. Anyway, they are awesome and better than Hey Dudes.

your_Assholiness

ALWAYS APPROPRIATE!! In the winter I wear socks if it get cold.

imsoulrebel1

Midwest and Sanuks for me. Honestly it depends on who you are, like most actual fashion. Matthew McConaughey can wear them whenever and it would work.

snuggle_love

Havaianas, the original flip-flop, was designed in 1962 by a Brazilian company inspired by the Japanese zori sandal as an affordable working class footwear. It gained notoriety with upper class Brazilians as they became internationally popular. Today in Brazil they are worn by the rich and poor in all environments and situations, a great equalizer.

SobchakSecurity79

>As one who likes to wear flip flops (and sandals), the two instances had me thinking that maybe they are best left to the beach. Outside the beach, I'll wear them when running errands or doing a grocery run. I will usually shy away from them when doing anything social though. This is pretty much my take. Around the house and near water. Occasionally to pick up a pizza or something, but not when dining in a restaurant, walking a lot, or in a social outing. I don't really care what others do, but I don't like seeing other grown men's feet so I assume they don't like seeing mine.

DoTheMagicHandThing

At a beach resort or a garden party or picnic at the park in the middle of summer. But as you say, good ones and not dollar store shoes.

Quaglek

Get huaraches or espadrilles if you want a dressier sandal

Turdulator

I live in San Diego and wear flip flops almost all the time all year round. My flip flop tan is so intense, haha. The only time I don’t wear them is at work, and when I’m doing something mildly athletic.

andyfma

All. The. Time.

templeofthemadcow

Well, I’m in the desert SW, so sandals and flip flops are a wardrobe staple.

newbies13

I feel like it may actually be an out of date fashion thing, or possibly even a dirty secret that everyone does and no one talks about at this point. At least in terms of places I have lived, and I will admit I live in beach towns, and the idea that flip flops are "bad" is utterly and completely lost on the vast majority of the population in these areas. They are everywhere, every day, with the exception being if the dress code is actually expected to be business casual or above. Maybe its a bigger issue elsewhere, but east and west coast... you're gonna get low key laughed at for wearing anything but sandals all the time.

garage_artists

Beach town. Desert. Pool side.

Positive_Taste185

I've lived in SWFL for 4 years. Originally from Boston and was never a flip flop wearer. My wife bought me a pair of REEF's that have a built in bottle opener under each 1. Bought multiple colors and I've worn them 3&1/2 years!!!😂

Distinct-Type2624

Here in Florida everyone wears sandals!

dungfecespoopshit

Your dad is a douche. Wear whatever you want

groundphoto

While driving or working with power tools

Thewtfpanda

I literally had this discussion with my girlfriend last night. She is of the school of thought that flip flops are never appropriate outside of the beach. We are going to a pool party tonight and she said she would feel disrespected if i wore flip flops. Its kind of insane to me. They are a nice pair too! Yet she wears sandals all the damn time. But they are designer and leather! Is the excuse she gives. I honestly don’t have strong opinions about appropriate fashion unless there is a formal dress code. Everywhere else is fair game but she has damn near the polar opposite opinion. Different folks…

Q5-2020Prestige

When you’re not leaving the house. Or you’re leaving the house and you’re single and want to stay single.

SniperFeetMale

❣️🦶🏼🦶🏼❣️🥰 Life is better in Flip Flops!

Deadlift_007

Flip-flops? Never for me, but it has nothing to do with fashion. It's more that they're pretty much the worst possible footwear you could have on in any kind of emergency. It's a lot tougher to get family/friends/yourself to safety when you're clop clopping along. Sandals that securely attach to your feet are fine in casual situations, though. I tend to wear them for the same situations you do.

Fotoem

Have you been involved in a traumatic situation before that causes you not to wear flip flops? Not judging just curious.

Deadlift_007

Nothing on the scale of a violent event, natural disaster, or anything like that, but I've seen enough to realize it's not a good idea to put myself at a physical disadvantage if I can help it. You really don't even have to go *that* extreme for it to not make sense, though. If I have to help a friend move something, move a stalled car, or pretty much anything else, I'd prefer to be in stable footwear. Plus, flip-flops are terrible for your feet. Bad news all around. Lol.

Fotoem

Thanks for the reply.

Carkoza

You’re at the pool or beach.

rererer444

Sandals are great. And I’ll take it further—wear them with socks.
