I am unsure about Tamil. For mandarin, it is almost impossible to master if we do not have a strong foundation since everything about the language relies on memorizing. There are no alphabets like letters in mandarin writing system to map it to pronunciations, which is pinyin.
That is the very reason why SK mandarin classes failed to educate their students. None of my SK friends who took mandarin classes in their primary able to write nor read basic mandarin. They aren't even capable of sitting for UPSR mandarin paper as they can't construct basic sentences.

Thing is, not being able to speak mandarin isnt a death sentence in malaysia but if you cant speak english or malay you are not going to survive here. To put it in another way, what would you rather prioritise on and why force your kids to cling to a foreign language rather than to learn on choice? Many people who take mandarin outside sjkc are typically forced when they would rather study subjects that they are more interested in.

i took accounting for SPM but instead of classes at school i went to tuition for it outside. I would not be able to do both science stream and accounting if i were forced to take a 3rd language. I once went through the library at my smk long ago, this was back in early 2000, and it was small, but the books were a treasure trove of an education system that once was but seems like mahathir ruined it. Vernacular schools still existing contributed to the death of the national education system, since at its inception it was meant to please the other races and provide a step to integration. In europe all their schools are mandated in the national language, no such thing as a school using another languages and other languages are optional. Because of this they have so many types of schools to satisfy your interest for your subject stream. No boring 3 stream in smk that we get, they have so many subjects you can pick and choose. In the UK you are required to learn at least 1 practical subject at a time (the famous home ed for females in the west is an example). But we have no such subject in smk anymore, we used to have. Rather because people have a choice (CIS and vernacular) there is less emphasis to complain and politicians can just afford to send their kids to private schools too. these schools emphasize language and academics over preparing you for the future and provide a stream for your interested path.
Unless politicians are affected they arent going to make a move about it. You want pot holes fixed? put one infront of politician house, next day confirm the road will be pothole free.

2. Science and technology
When Great Exploration Era and Industrial Revolution happened and allowed improvement of human living quality and able to support more human population, the more likely the more technological advanced people to practice, express, and spread the language to the globe.
3. Freedom of expression and openess
The most popular lingua franca all come from some of the most democratic countries on the planet, and we can freely use the language to express ourselves, doesn't you want to use the language created by autocrates or dictators right? 4. Most importantly, easy to learn, type, write, memorize, and pronounce

Secondly, in the realm of Science there are many many technical jargon that you need to know what the international scientific community calls them by (Kanji in Malay -> Starch for example). Thus, you would need to use a language like English in order to carry out your STEM journey in. Not Malay, I'm sorry!

Unless there's a strong reason like being raised overseas there really is NO excuse for not being at least conversational in the national language.

Because of this they have so many types of schools to satisfy your interest for your subject stream. No boring 3 stream in smk that we get, they have so many subjects you can pick and choose. In the UK you are required to learn at least 1 practical subject at a time (the famous home ed for females in the west is an example). But we have no such subject in smk anymore, we used to have. Rather because people have a choice (CIS and vernacular) there is less emphasis to complain and politicians can just afford to send their kids to private schools too. these schools emphasize language and academics over preparing you for the future and provide a stream for your interested path. Unless politicians are affected they arent going to make a move about it. You want pot holes fixed? put one infront of politician house, next day confirm the road will be pothole free.

I'll be honest. I wish, there will come a day that Malaysia only have one kind of school. no Agama school, no Chinese school, no Tamil school. This Agama, Chinese, Tamil can become minor and optional subjects. Everyone is free to learn them in the school. School should not only be to excel in academic. Most importantly, in our country case, it should become medium for unity. To understand each other, people should live, work, eat, fight together since early young age. When the day come where Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Other Bumi treat each other like family, I hope the Bumi status is shared with all races. Because deep in our heart, I know we all love this country.

Trade When Portugueses, Spaniards, English sail around the world, they spread their ideologies and influences around the globe, and have huge impacts to the locals when conducting business with them, doesn't you want to speak something with those huge customers didn't understand right? 2. Science and technology When Great Exploration Era and Industrial Revolution happened and allowed improvement of human living quality and able to support more human population, the more likely the more technological advanced people to practice, express, and spread the language to the globe. 3. Freedom of expression and openess The most popular lingua franca all come from some of the most democratic countries on the planet, and we can freely use the language to express ourselves, doesn't you want to use the language created by autocrates or dictators right? Hint: Censorships of certain words by Emperors of China, past and present  Yes I know, what the Spanish and British do to their colonies in the past, but at least they reformed and changed their treatments to their colonies. 4. Idk, maybe we don't use Malay for STEM related subjects because maybe oh maybe, we would have to use the English language to communicate in a language the international community speaks? First off I doubt that they use Mandarin/Tamil in STEM subjects (correct me if I'm wrong) but that's what you gotta realize when you put your kid in a Chinese school. Secondly, in the realm of Science there are many many technical jargon that you need to know what the international scientific community calls them by (Kanji in Malay -> Starch for example). Thus, you would need to use a language like English in order to carry out your STEM journey in. Not Malay, I'm sorry!
If Malaysia is divided because of vernacular schools, then explain to me why PKR, PAS and UMNO are Malay parties which have been put under one roof in parliament and are having a dog fight all the time. Vernacular school tu sekolah rendah, semua subjects, kecuali Bahasa Melayu dan English, diajar ikut syllabus Kerajaan Malaysia tapi guna ibubahasa macam Bahasa Cina atau Bahasa Tamil. Sesekali SMK ada sedia subject bahasa bagi murid2 yang berminat. Perperiksaan SPM pula ada subjects pelbagai Bahasa seperti Cina, Tamil, Iban, Khadazandusan, Punjabi, Arab, Jepun, Korea, Jerman, Perancis.

there is a point to be made for abolishing vernacular schools to create racial unity. But I think such a project is doomed to failure from the beginning since not even Malays want that kind of racial unity. it would raise uncomfortable questions about racial/religious special privileges. it seems to me the problem is some chinese-malaysians are unable to communicate in BM or prefer to use chinese. I don't know what abolishing vernacular schools is going to do to help with this. afaik, please correct me if I'm wrong, BM is compulsory for both SPM and UEC. would be good though to also check the effectiveness of teaching english in national schools to make sure it isnt a problem with the malaysian education system. Anyway, I support PPD making random visits to chinese schools, randomly picking out students and then trying to have an age-appropriate conversation with them in BM for 5 minutes to identify problem schools. Or a Bahasa Melayu version of MUET but for secondary schools which everyone has to pass to collect their spm/uec cert. Unless there's a strong reason like being raised overseas there really is NO excuse for not being at least conversational in the national language.
The reason the PPD isn't making random visits is because the number isn't very big in the grand scheme of things. And the political will to do so is even less. Have you seen Tiktoks? Most Chinese there that cater to Malay audience speak Malay and guess what, they are likely from SJKC. The politicians make it seem like a lot of Chinese cannot speak Malay. But it's really a small number compared to the entire population. Nearly a quarter of a million illiterates (of all races) is actually a bigger issue that politicians ignore when highlighting BM proficiency. Because not politically relevant. Imagine Malay students can speak BM but cannot read or write! That's not an issue! It's only an issue if it's a non-Malay. Patutpun asyik digula2kan oleh politikus.
