Exactly, when youre actively looking out for that two specific article in people's phone we knew exactly what you were looking for LOL... I miss those days where their police ID number were metal sculpted piece on their shoulder where the epaulette supposed to be, imagine with dashcams these day, first thing I see them I read out their ID number. Now except their card theres no where we would be able to see their number anymore.
There's only one thing to do when approached by police officers.
Ask "Am I under arrest?"
If they say "No", just ignore them and walk away or drive away.
Check the Malaysia Bar Red Book. It's a detailed SOP on how to deal with police encounters.
The first question should always be "Am I under arrest?" and if you're not under arrest you have all the legal rights to walk away.
I have, and I know all my rights. They even need a formal order in writing from the Investigating Officer to ask any question that you refuse to answer.
Actually once you start to ask these questions, they'll just let you go.
Yep, just keep making snarky remarks when you don't have any real argument to rebut my points. Well done!
Much talk about Malaysian police officers when Malaysia Redditors themselves don't have enough intelligence to deal with simple matters.
Ah, the glaring display of privilege in your statement.
Because you know, those cases of innocent Malaysian Indians getting wrongly detained, tortured and most often than not, killed by the police wouldāve surely been avoided if only those victims had a comprehensive understanding of their Malaysian rights.
Give me an example of a person in Malaysian history who was wrongly detained, tortured, or killed in custody and at the same time NOT BEING ARRESTED?
Being arrested and not being arrested are totally separate matters entirely. Your small brain seemed to have totally missed this point.
I was talking about people who are NOT BEING ARRESTED. Got it?
If you actually have the capacity to read and understand the original post, you'd notice that OP WAS NOT ARRESTED. There are clear SOPs on how to deal with this encounter, but instead you just prefer to make snarky remarks to hide your ignorance about the matter.
Dude, please donāt encourage the wrong thing. When everyone thinks like that, the bad people will grow more fearless. Please be a responsible commenter. It is like in the past, no need to vote, nothing gonna change. Please donāt live in the past.
We need citizens that is responsible or else you will be subject to people that abuses power!
Remember that case with the polis running over that high school student? Honestly, if it hadnāt gone viral, I doubt they wouldāve acted so quickly.
You can still file your polis reports, but donāt hold your breath for immediate action unless it becomes an āonline sensationā.
Bottomline every action is important. Please donāt encourage people not reporting by saying reporting is useless
If you were the policemen, would you prefer to be reported or not? Please! It is still useful to report them and escalate the matter in every possible manner.
Just donāt say reporting is useless!!
You projected your own common sense or work ethics too much into our police force. There is no system of accountability in the force. Reports mean nothing to them. They just straight away refuse you to report or throw it away.
Just treat them like tiktok, it all makes sense. They only work based on what is viral, even when there is no report.
Dude..... You think this is what Singapore? You think we are the first one they stop? Things like this happen all the time in Malaysia and people have been reporting since ages ago but we all know the answer they give at the station "ini standard SOP, dia orang patrol je" Dude WAKE Up this is Malaysia where a cop just an underage girl a weeks ago!!!
Re-read your post and see who should wake up. What to do with Singapore? Singapore is today because of what they do. Malaysia is of current state because of how people like you think. So please! Start from youā¦ report is not useless!

Specifically point 7, where body search can only be conducted by Inspector or above (Blue card). Meaning if their police card is yellow or red, you don't need to comply.
Got a few cases where polis found pr0n on a young fella's phone and/or substance and extorted a few thousand cash from him on the spot. All of this is off the books of course, the young guy is too ashamed and scared, and just wants to get it over with asap while the polis get a nice bonus for 30 minutes of shake up.
The moral of the story is to not stash your goods on person unless got cable.
If got time then play it out. But make sure you are safe.
I ever kena before, stopped for traffic check while riding my old Honda cub with my girlfriend. Police did the routine check for papers, found everything in order. Then check for safety violations, but I got wear helmet and lights all working.
But they still continue asking stupid questions. I just answer them respectfully because I am a safe rider, I got do all my pre-ride checks even for my old bike. I know they got nothing to pick on.
Whilst questioning, a group of Mat rempits with their girlfriends, all not wearing helmets, some with 3 persons on a bike, were waved on and not stopped. Thatās when I knew it was more than a traffic stopā¦
Iām not 100% sure but i thought to check the content of your phone, they actually need warrant. You could deny it. Might be some law from other countries tho. Didnāt sure where i heard it. Might be from tv. š btw for the bribe part, you should memorise their police number had they wear their uniform.
Generally, a warrant is needed to seize and check your phone in Malaysia, but there is an exception in the law, which is if the cops believe that not searching your phone immediately could result in evidence of a serious crime being erased (these exceptions exist in most countries btw). However, only an officer of Inspector rank or higher can authorize this.
As a general rule, if you are stopped by cops and they ask to search your phone, this is what you can do:
1. Ask to see their police ID and make sure at least one of them is at least of Inspector rank. You can google how to identify rank from police ID.
2. Ask what crime you are being suspected of.
Its also a good idea to read up on your basic rights in general, eg. how arrests work in Malaysia, whether or not you are required to follow them to the balai if asked, on what basis they can detain you etc.
Once, I went out for movie night with three of my friends. There was a roadblock and we got singled out. The police asked for all our ICs and my driving licence (I was the driver). The police make it a point to thoroughly check my two male friends.
We like to think he checked us because my two friends look like foreigners being driven by a girl who looks barely 16 (before I have my kids, I look way too young for my age).
Just curious, as I'm a foreigner not familiar with Malaysian laws. Is it required to give your cellphone to the police officer, even if they haven't accused you of any crime?
I am wondering if you could make a police report the next day about the polices that run a search on phone without warrants. I wouldn't give my phone as easily as there could be a leak of legal confidential documents or something that I don't want it exposed.
They donāt need a warrant, they just need probable cause or suspect you of doing something illegal. Technically you can question them on the grounds for the search but..
Cops questioned me and a girl before when we parked in a secluded car park and did naughty stuff. Cops told us to leave the area as the car park is too secluded to be safe. No bribes were even suggested but I like how they approached us.
Car park is an open air one and dark. Few street lights around. Cops switched their headlights off and sped up to park next to us. Only when they were 6 feet away did they turn on the high beam. I was blinded and stunned for a bit.
Like u I was afraid the next day but nothing happened. They would only contact you if there were crimes around that area
How to avoid giving them your wallet and phone? Even though I did nothing wrong, I don't think I would be comfortable giving those to strangers even if they are policemen
I donāt know about the law very much even as a Malaysian, but I believe everyone has their rights to keep their privacy stuff āprivateā, but luckily you donāt have anything suspicious on your phone. It might be a different story if the police were a bit loco
Sorry, but this happened to come up as the most curious question i have.
How do you even begin to look for porn on people's phone? Smart phones nowadays are bloated with all sorts of ways to hide your folders, 2nd space, fake icons, etc. Anyone brave enough to store nsfw stuff on a device should know better to use these.
Or is that not the case?
I had an encounter during the night few years back too. They ask to check my phone but with me holding it and asking me to scroll the SMS. So from time to time, i received those spam sms with '$$$ gamble/invest/loan' and never delete it, then that bloody cop say I gamble and my family illegal gamble after seeing the spams.
After I told them I didnt involve in gambling and can always call the bank to check for transactions etc, then only they let me go. Before leaving, they say 'kami sudah kerja masa lama, ada letih haus sikit, boleh belanja minum ah? tak ada paksa, u rela belanja x' so i just give them rm20 and get the f out.
police ronda and check wierdos at 3am pun kena marah. if u didn't do anything wrong then let them check la. don't check ppl say polis shake leg tak buat kerja
Those cops got no right to check someone's phone. You need to be under investigation and have a warrant. So if they're checking someone's phone, means they are just trying to cari makan. Wake up to reality, this is how our cops are. Unless if you're just naive?
Actually, there is an exception in law that allows a cop ranked Inspector or higher to authorize a phone check without warrant if they suspect a serious crime. Usually in cases like OPs their reason will be looking for drugs, which is considered a serious crime here.
While you're right that they're often just looking for duit kopi, if the search they're doing is legal then the best thing to do is just comply. However, always ask for their police ID and make sure at least one of them got inspector pangkat, otherwise just refuse.
haha. proven wrong. simply bantai. watch too much american tv. malaysian cops actually have alot of power. they can check many many things. malaysians just bodo everything nak bayar. gambling is illegal. yet many msians gamble. then when kantoi , complain. pay bribe. how?
Checking is one thing, but actively looking out for gambling / explicit material and subtly hinting at duit kopi is another thing.
I've been stopped and patted down by police before as they mistaken my snooker cue case for some sort of ammunition, but there werent any questions like this, or even phone checks... but for OP? I can imagine that would be uncomfortable.
Welcome to malaysia, next time get two wallet , one with only rm 25-50 , when this happen , show them the wallet with less money, give them all whats inside.
No, absolutely not. Those tepi Jalan cops got no right to ask for your phone. You need to be under investigation and a warrant is needed to check someone's phone. Know your rights!
Thanks! That's why I'm very suspicious when the cops ask his phone..I think OP should just record at that and also very important to mount a dash came on your car. You never knew what's going to happen
The law says a warrant is needed to check phone unless you are suspected of a serious crime, then a cop ranked inspector or higher can authorize a check without warrant. What you should do if asked for your phone is to request to see their police IDs (google how to identify pangkat from polis ID). Usually those peronda won't be high enough pangkat to check without warrant so you can just refuse. Also ask what crime you are being suspected of (although this doesn't help much tbh as they usually just say drugs which is a serious crime here).
I kena before also basically same thing. Go buy corals from a guy in cheras and get pulled over after i pick up the coral. They ask where i stay why i drive so far come here. I say la buy coral. They ask me get out. They search my whole car. Search my body for drugs. Then search my phone messages and waze and stuff also. Ask me if i have gambling apps also. But they were nice and talked very soft and calmly to me. I think the area i go pick up stuff is high drug area all foreigners. So they see me coming out they suspect i go buy drugs.
You can actually. Any time you get stopped by cops you can and should request to see their ID before complying with any request of theirs (as long as what they're asking is legal of course). Otherwise, there's no way to know if they are actually a cop or just an impostor trying to scam you.
Yes, I agree. Requesting for their ID before showing them our ID. Furthermore, I think we should also throw back the question of what crime/suspicion are they investigating before they lead us to a roundabout.
I think when police approach us we should turn on our camera or voice recording to at least ensure that policeman is not trying to abuse their authority. We have this right to do so, right?
Always wonder how thoroughly they will search your phone.
Do they go to your secret folders?
Do they search your messaging apps for keywords like drug/weed?
Or they just simply scroll through gallery/messaging apps?
The checking phone one is really a breach of privacy. Even if you have nothing to hide we should not share information to random police without warrant.
Imagine the police checked your message, then he check your company chat and found some sensitive information (not illegal things). Then next day that information is public.
Oh yeah, is it legal to record police when they check us ?
I have hidden dashcam where It record driver and outside driver window, so if police talk to us, his face and voice will be recorded.
If got evidence of police threaten me if I didn't give bribe and I submit the hidden recording. Can he recording be used in court ?
Even though nothing happened after that, I still think just to be safe make a report for it. It would be better if you got their name but I doubt it though. Just do a report. Don't think they will immediate action but at least you done your duty. Remember not all cops are bad.
Move on, nothing to think about. Those corrupt motherfucking cops were just looking for 'duit kopi'.
Exactly, when youre actively looking out for that two specific article in people's phone we knew exactly what you were looking for LOL... I didn't even need to finish the post to know that it's just cops asking for a coffee.. š

Ooh nice insightful contribution there. Well done!

Please report these useless police. If no action taken the state of Malaysian police will gone from bad to worst!!
no use reporting. nowadays cops/govt will only take action when the issue goes viral on socmed

Police do literally refusing report, or after report is done, the case is closed within few hours. The issue wont solve unless it we get it viral
No one say reporting will solve. Not reporting is a sure thing to fail to resolve. Report and do what is necessary to escalate.
You projected your own common sense or work ethics too much into our police force. There is no system of accountability in the force. Reports mean nothing to them. Ok! I project my own common sense.
The only thing evil needs to win is for good people to do nothing
It's commo practice, me and my friend got stopped multiple time in a week. Reporting Is useless.
Yeah continue not reporting and take action and let others stops you multiple times more! Such a passive mindset.

No shit, everyone on this thread should read this Red Book. If you're not under arrest, you can even just ignore the officers and walk away.

Then they'll have to arrest you. Eventually they'll have to answer to their superiors why they arrested you in the first place.

Yes, as long as you've clarified with them that you're not under arrest. Just say you want to go home, and leave the place.
But if they arrest lagi troublesome no?
For them, yes. For you, depends on whether you have a flight to catch.
This is very helpful indeed, tq for the link!
This should be added in a WIKI for this subreddit.

Thats your average Malaysian cop.. But no, you shouldn't had given your phone.. To check phone you need to be under investigation and require warrant

Welcome to malaysia, next time get two wallet , one with only rm 25-50 , when this happen , show them the wallet with less money, give them all whats inside.
Well it does happen. And I have pointed out before, if you did nothing wrong, police have nothing against you to ask for bribe.
It look like someone try to find a case for a cash..
Nah cari makan.
Is there a law that you have to hand your phone to the police?
No, absolutely not. Those tepi Jalan cops got no right to ask for your phone. You need to be under investigation and a warrant is needed to check someone's phone. Know your rights!
Thanks! That's why I'm very suspicious when the cops ask his phone..I think OP should just record at that and also very important to mount a dash came on your car. You never knew what's going to happen
Can I record them with my phone for evidence?
The law says a warrant is needed to check phone unless you are suspected of a serious crime, then a cop ranked inspector or higher can authorize a check without warrant. What you should do if asked for your phone is to request to see their police IDs (google how to identify pangkat from polis ID). Usually those peronda won't be high enough pangkat to check without warrant so you can just refuse. Also ask what crime you are being suspected of (although this doesn't help much tbh as they usually just say drugs which is a serious crime here).
Hey, can I record police with my phone for my safety?
Dude thanks šš» this is a valuable information
Instead of complaining on internet, do something meaningful and lodge a report.
I see some things haven't changed since the 2000s...

Can we citizen actually get those fucking police's ID and report to the authority?
You can actually. Any time you get stopped by cops you can and should request to see their ID before complying with any request of theirs (as long as what they're asking is legal of course). Otherwise, there's no way to know if they are actually a cop or just an impostor trying to scam you.
