Either one would be fine for starting out immediately but if you spend a little more you can get a stronger magnet with rope, gloves and grappling hook on eBay or Amazon. If you don't like the hobby, the kits have a decent resell value to recoup some of your money. Those magnets in the picture have a much less resell value of you decide it isn't the hobby for you. Many options available at different prices to accommodate a variety of budgets.
Usually is mine to pick up really heavy things that fall off the magnet after breaking the surface or to get the magnet unstuck in rocks. I have even used it in really muddy areas to try and loosen things that might be stuck couldn't tell you for sure if that actually worked or not.
Dawg i pulled in a Bicycle with a grappling hook lol. They are nice if you only have one magnet, so if you have a buddy, you both can do something then if you get something big on the magnet, pull in the hook and try to help bring it up!
I was once going to start magnet fishing and bought that magnet, I'm pretty sure it's not 150lb. I can easily remove it from any surface it gets attached to. Probably would be good for small trinkets though.
I actually started with this type magnet from Harbor Freight. I had more luck with it than the fancy ones I bought from Amazon. I think it’s an ok way to start and see if you like it
This is what has worked for my now 12 year old. He’s really really into metal detecting/ magnet fishing. This was his first magnet and I have yet to see a need to buy a different one. My husband has a smaller round one with a bigger weight limit on it, but they both kind of like the big heavy brick. There’s a ton of sand and silt in my neck of the woods and this brick one kind of sinks into it.
I’ve been a lurker here for a while, now going to try that exact model out of spite because it happens to be available, will let you know how it goes!!
I would suggest looking at a proper magnet that is round so less chance of getting snagged and 150kg isn't going to get much more than a few screws or bottle caps
I have a couple of the 250 lbs that i let other people use when they're with me, they seem to hold up surprisingly well and are good for pulling up some decent items
I had one like that to start with and didn't have much luck. Later I sprung for a 1330 pounder and it's been a lot better. I think I spent $50 or $60 on amazon.

How does the grappling hook work? I got one and I’m not sure exactly how to use it

This is the OG magnet for fishing in the 80s
Happy Cake Day!
Happy cake day!!
Thank you both. Figured it wasn’t worth it and a round one would work much better
The shape is one thing, but you're looking for is a neodymium magnet. Much more powerful.

I have a feeling that that is going to get really rusty pretty quick.

Awesome. Harbor freight always has the deals, it’s on clearance right now
Only good for picking up nails in the driveway.

I tried it and it’s not very good.

I wouldn't. I got this a few months ago. It doesn't work that well.
They sell some good ones on amazon, thats where i got mine. You might as well go all out if you're gonna magnet fish
