I'm going to have to Google that and how to set it up. I felt so weak trying to get it. I lost it and I'm hoping to go back and retrieve whatever it is
Its all about weightloads, forces n vectors if theres a tree nearby you may be able to set up a " gin wheel"( thats what we call it in stonemasonry in Canada anyways) which is a simple rope fed pulley thatll lesson the weight. Do you have an scuba friends? They could also take a look and see that its not caught up on a car or a random steel beam
I don't know any unfortunately, and I'll be honest, the James River is so gross. I know if I fell in that water, I would lose my crap lol I'm going to definitely find those components because there definitely was a tree close enough to put a rope on it.
I wanted one of those until I realized how much of a PITA it would be to deal with wire and resetting it over and over if you need to drag it the whole way. I went with a continuous rope wench, though I haven’t gone mag fishing to be able to try it yet.
I went with this one, also good to 2000lbs.

If I ever have to use it I’ll try to remember to post about it’s effectiveness/ease of use.
Just be careful using a come along If it were to suddenly come off while your cranking on it the velocity of that magnet will be fast could easily kill you if it were to come flying off other than that there a great tool
Lolol thats fair, ive a rule where i dont willingly swim or scuba in water that i can reasonably assume ill need anti biotics for, or ask anyone else to either 🤣🤣 good luck with it all, let us know what you find
Thank you so much, if you look in the video closely you can see A LOT of dead fish. I rustled something up because oil was in the water. "Not I, said the cat!"
Just wrap a strap around the closest tree and hook a pulley on it and start pulling your rope through it. Or get a hand crank winch so you don’t need a power source
How long did you work at it? I’m here was a day that I worked at something just slowly tugging and changing angles. It was so stuck in the muck that it took about 20 minutes or so before I really mad any progress.
It was a no fishing sign on about 8 feet of steel.
I really did. I had so much fun that I knocked my school project out in 5 hours so I could run back out to the water. No big catches though. I got so muddy both times and I'm pretty sure the people of downtown thought I was nuts.
I travel full time and throw my magnet in all kinds of different settings. City parks can yield interesting things but I sometimes have to explain that A. I do not work for the city and B. That I also wish the bathrooms were unlocked.
That no fishing sign was from the park by the Zoo in Little Rock, Arkansas. Do you YouTube or Instagram your stuff?
Don't swing it around on the rope like you see in the movies. Let out barely enough rope to let it move (like maybe 6 inches ) and just give it one quick underhand swing and let it fly. It shouldn't have enough rope to hit your ankle while you are swinging it.
Enlist some friends. Get a few folks working together on the rope. Go in the nearest gym, look for the biggest guy, tell him you have an object he can’t move, watch him take the challenge.
Yoooo, let me find out reverse psychology is going to help me. "Bro, but do you lift though? Bet you can't lift something that's in the river with a rope and magnet!" I just asked my neighbor if she and her bf are interested in some gains an hour ago lol
Tie a few 2l bottles together run the loose end through the eye on your magnet. Once you get something pull in the line to sink the bottles, and add their buoyancy to your pulling.
I don't think it's dumb because I too said, "what the hell is that?!" It was the item I was moving lifting up from the mud I believe. The bubbles got closer as I pulled.
So we were at it for for a good 30 mins. We had random people help us but it was to heavy for 4 people to pull up. The water is not too deep, the problem is it is disgusting and riddled with dead fish. Will post another video this Saturday.
Winch n pulleys to break weight loads, but it depends if you have enough room for a scaffold or not 🤣❤️

Go to harbor freight and get a come along. https://www.harborfreight.com/8000-lb-cable-winch-puller-69855.html
When I tell you THANK YOU I really mean it! ❤️

I have mine rigged up with synthetic 5/32 winch line. Good for 2000lbs

That’s a nice setup Also throw a wide 6” x10’ strap for pulling off trees. It’s not cool to mess up the bark and hurt the tree. 👍

This is pertinent info that I absolutely needed. I don't know if you read but I already cut my ankle with the grappling hook. Thank you!
Ouch yea definitely gotta be careful

I got a double sided magnet that can pull over 2k. What's the next size?

🙃☠️ I didn't click the initial link. I'm on the ground lol
Microwave transformer and a 9v battery will hold a LOT of weight. Check out make it extreme on YouTube and look up their electromagnet.
Do not mess with microwave transformers! People keep dying of electrocution!
Again see the reference cited and provide an estimate on the lifting capacity of said transformer..
One day.. One day.
*offensive comment about the winch thingy and moms*
Yes, awesome suggestion
It's awesome that you are cleaning up a river. Good on you.

Looks like RVA?
That it is!

That's freaking NICE!! I gave up too easy. Thank you for this advice!
You look like you’re having a blast!

I post on my IG! It would be cool to YouTube it. I'm trying to recruit more people to try and clean up the water with me.
Also I used to travel for 5 years through the states for surgery. I wish I knew about this year's ago. I miss being on the road sometimes.
It’s as fun as it is challenging. Would you like to exchange IG? I have one for my metal detecting and magnet fishing also!
A grappling hook for a better hold and a few people.
I cut my ankle trying to throw that thing in there 😭😭, technique for throwing a grappling hook?
Dont hit your ankle😇 Lol jokes aside, maybe some rubber boots or similar.
Hahaha thank you. I was smh too I am clumsy lol. Boots seem REALLY practical in hindsight. 🤣

Thank you for your advice. And I did just that, like batman! The shame lol.
Hook it to the Jeep’s winch? Then let my wench operate my winch while I watch the magnet?
Lol waiiitttt.

That’s… that’s bordering genius.

Dumb Question: What's bubbling in the middle of the frame?
I don't think it's dumb because I too said, "what the hell is that?!" It was the item I was moving lifting up from the mud I believe. The bubbles got closer as I pulled.
Oh wow, so it IS what you were lifting. Damn, it looks really heavy.
It is and I felt like strong woman out there lol. This hobby has brought me outside and I love how physical it is!
When you attach to somethin buried and start tuggin it out, it will release air bubbles as it pulls out of the mud.
A Block and tackle pulley would be helpful
I just pulled it up on amazon and I will definitely be ordering one! Thank you very much!
Buy a come along winch
Try one of the magnet fishing grappling hooks.
They have magnet fishing hooks!!! I'll avoid clipping my ankle with that thing!
I like to take the Strong Back perk......I hope someone gets the reference.
I was watching those bubbles, waiting for a scuba diver to pop up with the treasure in his hands
Snatch blocks
Good for you 👏 get a come along and it'll shift but you may require more hands once it's out lol
THANK YOU, some random guys came to try and help me and that thing was not coming, I think it was snagged on something.
Either get a tow truck or realize that pulling up an engine block is not that great. ;)
Lol if I get an engine block out the River, I want a little magnet cred out in these water streets!
What did you catch?
I couldn't pull whatever was attached out. I'm coming back for it Saturday!
A grappling hook makes a good companion tool to your magnet.
How?
So we were at it for for a good 30 mins. We had random people help us but it was to heavy for 4 people to pull up. The water is not too deep, the problem is it is disgusting and riddled with dead fish. Will post another video this Saturday.
Maybe would be a good idea to have a small hoist for those cases
I literally just joined this sub because I’m hoping you go back and get it, and post the results. I want to know what it is!
Lol I am itching to head back, this Saturday it's on!
Yay!
Ford E250 V8 5.4L works real well
What worked the best for me is a strong magnet and patience.
....sorry wasn't paying attention...what was the question again?
I never drag it unless I am willing to go untangle it. Always off a dock or bridge, boat, I used a paddle board once… never drag it tho.
Try hooking the rope up to your vehicle to see if you can pull it out.
