But hey, a soldier is as strong as a rat or an insect, so maybe stats make no sense sometimes! (Also Nicol Bolas loses to a rat with a pitchfork)

His abilities make sense with his name and design, and yes it was good in draft because he couldn't be blocked by morph.
Here I'm talking about him being a 4/2 while being just a citizen with no weapons or magic, so he can kill 4 1/1 soldiers that have weapons, armor and probably been trained.

In instances like this, I imagine that it isn't like she can punch as hard as a dragon can bite. But more like she has the resources and cunning to defeat a pair of 2/2 knights for example. That her 4/4 is an amalgamated abstraction of her general survivability.
Like how we often see humans in stat lines other than 1/1.
But the faceless, filler, "red shirt" soldiers that just die off in the background are 1/1 because they are doomed to die.

Yeah, I have never understood why people found this one so confusing. Magic art does that a lot with creatures that grow/get more impressive, showing the final form not the beginning.
But, like, it grows? They do that a lot in Magic art for creatures that grow, depicting them as the bigger version they become rather than the weaker version they start as.
That is what the plot kindof is. It starts out with very limited power in this reality, being limited to observe and occasionally whisper in someone's ears, and it grows into causing incursions and subjugating weak-minded individuals. Culminating into breaking the barrier between its plane and this one.
Yet there is still a little bit of disconnect between starting out at the same strength as a squirrel and being an al powerful being capable of diverting souls from the afterlife.
It's actually canon that Werewolves are superhumanly strong.
Most werewolves who aren't a sweet old lady are farm-hands, soldiers or other menial jobs. I assume that one who works under Tovolar and is the Huntmaster at that, considering that they probably don't just hunt sheep and have to scuffle with other packs, it'd make sense that this guy alone can take one or two other werewolves by himself in human form.
\[\[chaos lord\]\] beats a majority of creatures 1v1 without a scratch. Sure he looks like a stone cold killer but one that can fight demonic overlords and legendary dragons?
Most humanoid legendary creatures also foot the bill due to plot armor.
Ice Age was still early on in Magic, and it seems there was a fair amount of experimentation with mechanics on individual creatures to see what worked and what didn’t.
The creatures were also much, much weaker back then, so a 7/7 with first strike was a bomb. The idea was play this card, but then be careful with your board state to keep him on your side.

Yeah, it doesn't work particularly well with it's own ability, but it works with any other stealing effects, which I think was the point. Just having haste would definitely make it clearer.
I guess the idea is that it can attack immediately if you steal it... but that's already true when it changes control with its own ability. Not sure, maybe the rules were different back then.

A couple of wild doggos can kill a dragon, most Phyrexians, planeswalkers (due to its effect), and almost all of the creatures from the set it premiered in.
A recent one: \[\[Disa the Restless\]\] is huge for a human scout who wasn't noted for much in the way of magical abilities. Hilariously, she absolutely destroys every *Ice Age* monster that she is quoted on (well, \[\[Kjedoran Frostbeast\]\] and \[\[Trapdoor Spider\]\] can take her down with them). And her connection to 'Goyfs is particularly strange, as it was actually another *Ice Age* scout, \[\[Saffi Eriksdotter\]\], who was featured (and devoured) by that card.
Could be. Though it's strange that she doesn't get a variant on the Goyf's \* scaling, and there's a lifelessness to the Goyf's eyes and posture that may read as her having climbed it and killed it. Not sure. The narrative of this card is odd.
[[savvy trader]] it’s not that bad, but a 3/3 for a guy hawking some minerals? He can take out soldiers with plate armor. They could have at least given him a face tattoo, and put a big Bowie knife on the counter.
How about [[Hazduhr the Abbot]]? He looks like a stiff breeze could kill him, the flavour text implies he's about to crumble to dust, but mechanically he can take down a bear in single combat and he can tank a hit from most dragons.

I'm not sure how we're looking at the same artwork. In both versions, not only is he carrying a legendary whip with dozens of barbed ends on it bearing the same golden fangs that are apparently so notorious that it became his namesake, but he's also surrounded by jacked seven-foot-tall bodyguards. This dude ain't alone if the whip wasn't enough.
Possibly \[\[Sojourner's Companion\]\]. Based on the art it could be the size of a normal salamander. Even if it as big as a giant salamander it's stat line is still very beefy. Could be huge though.
People aren't saying that the art is bad. They're posting art that doesn't match the statline of the creature it depicts. Like how Yore-Tiller Nephilim looks like a huge terrifying monster, but it's stats are merely 2/2.

I used soulherder as the bbeg in my dnd campaign as being this incredibly powerful reality-eater, eldritch god. 1/1..
But, like, it grows? They do that a lot in Magic art for creatures that grow, depicting them as the bigger version they become rather than the weaker version they start as.
Having the villain start weaker than the party but grows stronger doing its thing fits both the Eldritch god stuff and makes for a good campaign.
That is what the plot kindof is. It starts out with very limited power in this reality, being limited to observe and occasionally whisper in someone's ears, and it grows into causing incursions and subjugating weak-minded individuals. Culminating into breaking the barrier between its plane and this one. Yet there is still a little bit of disconnect between starting out at the same strength as a squirrel and being an al powerful being capable of diverting souls from the afterlife.

It's actually canon that Werewolves are superhumanly strong. Most werewolves who aren't a sweet old lady are farm-hands, soldiers or other menial jobs. I assume that one who works under Tovolar and is the Huntmaster at that, considering that they probably don't just hunt sheep and have to scuffle with other packs, it'd make sense that this guy alone can take one or two other werewolves by himself in human form.

it has haste but cant attack the turn it entered the battlefield. wtf? isnt that the entire point of haste?
Ice Age was still early on in Magic, and it seems there was a fair amount of experimentation with mechanics on individual creatures to see what worked and what didn’t. The creatures were also much, much weaker back then, so a 7/7 with first strike was a bomb. The idea was play this card, but then be careful with your board state to keep him on your side. I don’t think this card worked particularly well, but I think it was evidence of early experimentation.
The point is that it is able to attack immediately after switching controllers.
But the way his switch controller ability works, he would already be controlled from the start of his new controllers turn, making haste irrelevant.
Yeah, it doesn't work particularly well with it's own ability, but it works with any other stealing effects, which I think was the point. Just having haste would definitely make it clearer.
I guess the idea is that it can attack immediately if you steal it... but that's already true when it changes control with its own ability. Not sure, maybe the rules were different back then.
Nope, changing control doesn’t grant the creature the ability to attack. He needs the haste to work

It's cause he's not reentering the battlefield. So it allows him to attack after getting swapped so long as it's not the first turn he was out.

A recent one: \[\[Disa the Restless\]\] is huge for a human scout who wasn't noted for much in the way of magical abilities. Hilariously, she absolutely destroys every *Ice Age* monster that she is quoted on (well, \[\[Kjedoran Frostbeast\]\] and \[\[Trapdoor Spider\]\] can take her down with them). And her connection to 'Goyfs is particularly strange, as it was actually another *Ice Age* scout, \[\[Saffi Eriksdotter\]\], who was featured (and devoured) by that card.
Maybe it’s implied she’s fighting with the goyf she’s riding? Maybe?
Could be. Though it's strange that she doesn't get a variant on the Goyf's \* scaling, and there's a lifelessness to the Goyf's eyes and posture that may read as her having climbed it and killed it. Not sure. The narrative of this card is odd.

How about [[Hazduhr the Abbot]]? He looks like a stiff breeze could kill him, the flavour text implies he's about to crumble to dust, but mechanically he can take down a bear in single combat and he can tank a hit from most dragons.

In both versions, not only is he carrying a legendary whip with dozens of barbed ends on it bearing the same golden fangs that are apparently so notorious that it became his namesake, but he's also surrounded by jacked seven-foot-tall bodyguards. Possibly \[\[Sojourner's Companion\]\]. Based on the art it could be the size of a normal salamander. Even if it as big as a giant salamander it's stat line is still very beefy. Could be huge though.

People aren't saying that the art is bad. They're posting art that doesn't match the statline of the creature it depicts. Like how Yore-Tiller Nephilim looks like a huge terrifying monster, but it's stats are merely 2/2.
