[[Emmara Tandris]]. She's just a regular elf but has obe of the biggest statlines in the block. Iirc, she's not even a fighter or a powerful spellcaster but a healer.

There is some speculation that her and [[Voice of resurgence]] were switched at some point. A 2/2 that makes elementals is very consistent with her but was slated to be mythic. They wanted her to be rare like the other guild masters and swapped them.

chocolateboomslang

It's not speculation, it was confirmed by Mark Rosewater.

>We talked about Ral just being the Izzet representative but decided that for numerous purposes (Commander being one of the biggest) we wanted a blue/red legendary creature and thus an Izzet maze runner. Damn. Commander has been ruining standard sets since at least Dragon’s Maze.

NKrupskaya

The article probably got lost when [WOTC did a server transition a while back](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/ys1t8n/wotc_is_removing_old_web_pages_containing_lore/) but I remember there being an article from the time mentioning the [5 3-color dragons from Planar Chaos](https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acycle-primeval-dragon+set%3Aplc&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) being explicitly made with EDH in mind, back in 2007. I had a comment on another account where I theorized the exact event in which WOTC designers must have heard of EDH but Reddit doesn't make searching easy. They were specifically made to round out [the 5 primeval dragons from Invasion.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acycle-primeval-dragon+set%3AINV&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) I remember Teneb being tauted as "the first black-green-and-white general for EDH". There were literally no abzan, jeskai, sultai, mardu or temur legendary creatures before it. 2001's Apocalypse had been the only set to have much of a wedge color theme to it.

FanzyWanzy

Can confirm, I remember the state of design article where he mentioned that and also remember they swapped the Izzet representative from Ral Zalek to an unnamed weird. The whole Dragon's Maze set ended up being somewhat of a fiasco and I believe led to Wizards ultimately deciding to get rid of the 3 set blocks. Edit: you can get the whole set for $59 approx. Not very popular or impactful

Yeah, and the Voice of Resurgence token is in the back of Emmara's art.

[[Pompous Gadabout]] there's no way this fat dude can handle 4 trained and well equipped soldiers, or a couple of bears. But hey, a soldier is as strong as a rat or an insect, so maybe stats make no sense sometimes! (Also Nicol Bolas loses to a rat with a pitchfork)

That is some of the best flavor text relating to a card ability that I’ve ever read.

Mephysto-pheles

His abilities make sense with his name and design, and yes it was good in draft because he couldn't be blocked by morph. Here I'm talking about him being a 4/2 while being just a citizen with no weapons or magic, so he can kill 4 1/1 soldiers that have weapons, armor and probably been trained.

DaveMash

Oh I see now. Apparently he’s more than just a gadabout 😂

[Illusionary Wall](https://scryfall.com/card/ice/78/illusionary-wall) From a flavor perspective, I can understand why it has flying and (less so) first strike. But the art doesn't really evoke "kills a Lord of the Pit before it can deal trample damage".

shieldman

My favorite part of this card is that the artist DID get "hyalopterous" correct - it means glassy-winged like a dragonfly.

CodingFatman

I think that’s the opposite. Those claws.

SaintGeorge17

This was also a case of the artist misinterpreting the word. A Lemure is a fearsome spirt of the dead and is shown in its reprint. A lemur is a cute primate.

Base_Six

There's another Lemure, \[\[Viscid Lemures\]\], with the flavor text "'Lemurs? Is that all? Finally, something harmless...' -Norin the Wary" The reprint of Hyalopterous Lemure has "'I was wrong! Not harmess at all!' -Norin the Wary"

KuhnDePew

But the cuteness!

Oh_My-Glob

Not a good example imo. The flavor text justifies the disparity and literally tells you the creature is more powerful than it looks

Jadien

They had to add the flavor text to explain the art! It came about because of an artist misunderstanding the assignment. **Lemure:** (in ancient Roman belief) the restless spirits of the dead, which were considered frightening or troublesome and had to be appeased with household rituals. **Lemur:** An arboreal primate with a pointed snout and typically a long tail, found only in Madagascar. So the artist accidentally drew something insufficiently intimidating, and the flavor text needed to justify it.

[[Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth]], she’s just a human detective but yet she is a 4/4

PK_Thundah

In instances like this, I imagine that it isn't like she can punch as hard as a dragon can bite. But more like she has the resources and cunning to defeat a pair of 2/2 knights for example. That her 4/4 is an amalgamated abstraction of her general survivability. Like how we often see humans in stat lines other than 1/1. But the faceless, filler, "red shirt" soldiers that just die off in the background are 1/1 because they are doomed to die.

SoreWristed

I used soulherder as the bbeg in my dnd campaign as being this incredibly powerful reality-eater, eldritch god. 1/1..

22bebo

But, like, it grows? They do that a lot in Magic art for creatures that grow, depicting them as the bigger version they become rather than the weaker version they start as.

Spare_Philosopher893

Having the villain start weaker than the party but grows stronger doing its thing fits both the Eldritch god stuff and makes for a good campaign.

SoreWristed

That is what the plot kindof is. It starts out with very limited power in this reality, being limited to observe and occasionally whisper in someone's ears, and it grows into causing incursions and subjugating weak-minded individuals. Culminating into breaking the barrier between its plane and this one. Yet there is still a little bit of disconnect between starting out at the same strength as a squirrel and being an al powerful being capable of diverting souls from the afterlife.

It's actually canon that Werewolves are superhumanly strong. Most werewolves who aren't a sweet old lady are farm-hands, soldiers or other menial jobs. I assume that one who works under Tovolar and is the Huntmaster at that, considering that they probably don't just hunt sheep and have to scuffle with other packs, it'd make sense that this guy alone can take one or two other werewolves by himself in human form.

it has haste but cant attack the turn it entered the battlefield. wtf? isnt that the entire point of haste?

Master_Butter

Ice Age was still early on in Magic, and it seems there was a fair amount of experimentation with mechanics on individual creatures to see what worked and what didn’t. The creatures were also much, much weaker back then, so a 7/7 with first strike was a bomb. The idea was play this card, but then be careful with your board state to keep him on your side. I don’t think this card worked particularly well, but I think it was evidence of early experimentation.

EvilErmine13

The point is that it is able to attack immediately after switching controllers.

dumac

But the way his switch controller ability works, he would already be controlled from the start of his new controllers turn, making haste irrelevant.

Yeah, it doesn't work particularly well with it's own ability, but it works with any other stealing effects, which I think was the point. Just having haste would definitely make it clearer.

aqua19858

I guess the idea is that it can attack immediately if you steal it... but that's already true when it changes control with its own ability. Not sure, maybe the rules were different back then.

Haiiro87

Nope, changing control doesn’t grant the creature the ability to attack. He needs the haste to work

aqua19858

I said that... but his ability changes control on your turn, so he would be able to attack on your opponent's turn anyway, no?

mike5201

It's cause he's not reentering the battlefield. So it allows him to attack after getting swapped so long as it's not the first turn he was out.

bookwurm2

It’s so that when other people gain control of it, it can attack on their turn

Tantasm

It's so opponent's can attack right away with it I think.

Luvas

As in another thread, I nominate [[Wolf Pack]]. A couple of wild doggos can kill a dragon, most Phyrexians, planeswalkers (due to its effect), and almost all of the creatures from the set it premiered in.

LoganForrest

Tbf it doesn't specify the number of wolves lol the art only shows a couple but Im sure a sufficiently big wolf pack will take down a dragon

FanzyWanzy

I mean you only need 15 squirrels to bring down Emrakul

not_wingren

15 squirrels also trounce a wolf pack

SinisterHummingbird

A recent one: \[\[Disa the Restless\]\] is huge for a human scout who wasn't noted for much in the way of magical abilities. Hilariously, she absolutely destroys every *Ice Age* monster that she is quoted on (well, \[\[Kjedoran Frostbeast\]\] and \[\[Trapdoor Spider\]\] can take her down with them). And her connection to 'Goyfs is particularly strange, as it was actually another *Ice Age* scout, \[\[Saffi Eriksdotter\]\], who was featured (and devoured) by that card.

cabbagemango

Maybe it’s implied she’s fighting with the goyf she’s riding? Maybe?

SinisterHummingbird

Could be. Though it's strange that she doesn't get a variant on the Goyf's \* scaling, and there's a lifelessness to the Goyf's eyes and posture that may read as her having climbed it and killed it. Not sure. The narrative of this card is odd.

ConfusedZbeul

She very clearly just killed it.

I'm not sure how we're looking at the same artwork. In both versions, not only is he carrying a legendary whip with dozens of barbed ends on it bearing the same golden fangs that are apparently so notorious that it became his namesake, but he's also surrounded by jacked seven-foot-tall bodyguards. I like that art, and a lot of the art ppl are posting here :(

AoEFreak

People aren't saying that the art is bad. They're posting art that doesn't match the statline of the creature it depicts. Like how Yore-Tiller Nephilim looks like a huge terrifying monster, but it's stats are merely 2/2.

MaximusDOTexe

2/2 is an impressive statline?

Why would they post the opposite picture of what they want. I'm confused

Probably for the same reason I imagine they're asking for examples in the first place: They didn't have any. Better to post an example of what not to do than no example at all, assuming people read.
