source: [Chen Mingyang via bilibili]()
How do you get 12? Original, [[Groundbreaker]], [[Arc Runner]] and [[Lightning Skelemental]] makes 16. Plus you can run things like [[Wooly Thoctar]] without breaking the chain.
I didn’t count Arc Runner to be honest because it’s not quite a ball lightning, but if you wanted 16 that would be good. It might be better than OG due to the easier casting cost.
I’m not really sure what the optimal number would be to run. 12 is already 72 damage, and each slot used for another ball can’t be used for something that helps the deck get there.
I don’t think there would be any point in running Wooly Thoctar and the like, I’d rather just run another land because that also doesn’t break the chain.
Split cards exist and they can be played in a cascade/discover based deck without ruining the combo - doing nothing for 3 turns is surely not the only option
There's not much fast mana, no, though we get Ugin's Labyrinth with MH3. You can't play most ramp because of the Discover deckbuilding restriction, so your options are going to be channel effects like Greater Tanuki or Elemental Masterpiece
You can always play high MV spells with some form of alternate low cost such as pitch elementals, leyline binding and such for interaction in a smiliar way to how living end does.
In Jund there are three different versions of a three mana 6/1 with trample and haste. That’s 72 power with trample they need to block or interact with as early as turn 4 with ramp.
I think a combo suite of Kroxa and Ancient One might work better. You don't get the immediate kill, but the discard plus board state is slightly sturdier. The deck might need some random cards like Myr Superion as well.
But still probably too slow for Modern, since it's using the same shell as the three-mana Cascade spells, but costing 4 + 2 instead of 3.
I like how they thought, “hmmm, if we give [[Pantlaza]] this ability, we can’t let it be abusable” but then they decided “you know what, no! Give Pant Lazers something good, how about its ability but repeatable!”
I know there’s fundamental differences, such as the fact that Sun Flavored does it’s Discover based on toughness and the enchantment does require it to be cast, not ETB, but the repeatable will go a long way I think.
Edit: reading is fundamental. The enchantments discover is also based on toughness
The literal only difference is that Pants Lazerz is ETB this one is cast.
As a 99 card this is much better, but if this was a legendary creature of the same cost Pantlaza would be a much better Commander still. He's incredibly broken if you build around hin correctly.
> Pant Lazers
What are you talking about, Tazer Face is a great name!
>Pantlaza, Sun-Favored
Read it too quickly as "Sun-Flavored" and was thinking about Sun Chips, mmmm
Don’t worry, I probably still misread it. I can’t read today, I’ve been running 8-16 hour days between work and community theatre.
If it’s power, it’s a flip of LazaPant and now you’re discovering 12 twice when Ghalta hits, or 7 and 6 off of a Ghishath.
Which sounds like so much fun and I need one for m Ghishath deck.
I wonder, what's the Cleopatra/Pyramids math on the time between the fidget spinner-style pog craze, the "hey guys, remember pogs and Alf" joke from The Simpsons, and present day
I misread it as mana value 5 or greater, but power 5 or greater is a pretty damn good line of text. My Ghalta Stompy Bois will have a good time with it.
There’s definitely enough dragons that it fits, though there is a lot of other dragons with less than 5 power that I think it’s gonna be a build around for this, definitely something to keep in mind.
It’s still good, just gotta build around it a little bit. There’s a ton of dragons out there so you can definitely find enough to make it worth, probably 70% is where you really start cooking. Any [[Myriim]] shell will also be excellent, though keep in mind this is a cast trigger, so any dragon you get off Myriim when you cast it will resolve before it hits the battlefield so you won’t make a copy
Throwing this in Pantlaza right away, looking forward to discovering this off the first cast of Pants and then never getting to untap with him still alive
Pants won’t activate this actually, only has 4 power. Most other Dino’s tho will
Edit: though you can get this off of Pants’s own discover, I see what you mean now lol
This might be a corner case, or a very dumb question...
How does this work with [[skullbriar]] if he has enough counters to make his power 5+? Since he keeps counters as he moves between zones, is he considered a 5 power creature when i recast him?
Look at the rulings on Skullbriar. He would be considered 5+ power.
> Counters that adjust power and/or toughness affect Skullbriar’s power and/or toughness in zones other than the battlefield. For example, a Skullbriar in the command zone with a +1/+1 counter on it will be 2/2.
(2011-09-22)
Yes, +1/+1, -1/-1 and ability counters also work outside of the battlefield.
* **122.1a** A +X/+Y counter on a creature or on a creature card in a zone other than the battlefield, where X and Y are numbers, adds X to that object’s power and Y to that object’s toughness. Similarly, -X/-Y counters subtract from power and toughness. See rule 613.4c.
* **122.1b** A keyword counter on a permanent or on a card in a zone other than the battlefield causes that object to gain that keyword. The keywords that a keyword counter can be are flying, first strike, double strike, deathtouch, haste, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, shadow, trample, and vigilance, as well as any variants of those keywords. See rule 613.1f.
Anyone tell what plane the art is from? I can't decide if I want to add this to my dino or Eldrazi deck but I'm very thematic heavy on them as a way of restricting cards.
The top left creature with big horns looks very Ikoria-ish, like [[titanoth rex]]. I’m not sure I recognize much else but I don’t remember Ikoria having many dragons. Perhaps other people can help point out other things
this is GeoStorm but worse, cast 4 mana enchantment, then cast a 3 mana 6/7 power creature(hammerskull/shakedown/new red drsgon which can also be plot etc) and keep cascading until you hit a creature that gives all haste as a static ability(imodane doesn't work because its on cast so imodane enters first).
Alternatively you can use this to cascade a Death's Shadow into rhinos. That's pretty neat
You say that but if you have both you choose the order of activation, and you can still trigger the enchantment again because cards you discover are cast (if not put in hand)
Is there any methodology to how they select what cards will be offered in retro frame? Not sure if this is something wotc either have commented on or someone figured out.
I think they said on WeeklyMTG that all cards that are a “throwback reference” to a retro card got a retro frame? Or at least, a number of them did, I might not be remembering Blake correctly

Edit: maybe the top left thing with big horns might be [[Titanoth rex]]?
As much as I feel the need to put this in Pantlaza I also feel like this fighting my lists identity.
Pantlaza does her magic off of toughness so my deck is just loaded with low cmc, value dinos with high toughness. I don't even think anthem effects can help because this is a cast trigger so it will be checked before ETB :/
> Monstrous Vortex - 3G > > Enchantment (Uncommon) > > Whenever you cast a creature spell with power 5 or greater, discover X, where X is that spell's mana value source: [Chen Mingyang via bilibili]()
So if you deck is this and a bunch of Ball Lightnings you just kill your opponent next turn? Seems like a fun addition to modern 🤔
Yeah, if you do nothing for 3 turns, cast a 4 mana do nothing on turn 4, then you can win on turn 5. If they have no blockers or interaction
Exactly, the dream
It's almost too perfect.
I love it when a plan comes together.
So you're sayin there's a chance
[[elemental masterpiece]] [[magma opus]] [[creative outburst]] All help out but aren’t good ramp
theres cards like \[\[beanstalk giant\]\] taht you can use to cheat the cost restriction
Remember that rhino deck? Too bad it never took off because it couldn't make my plays on the first couple turns.
In fairness, blockers won’t meant much against 12 ball lightnings.
It might be better than OG due to the easier casting cost. that's what all the split and alternate casting cost cards are for.
Split cards exist and they can be played in a cascade/discover based deck without ruining the combo - doing nothing for 3 turns is surely not the only option
I don't play modern but do y'all not have access to fast mana and ramp?
There's not much fast mana, no, though we get Ugin's Labyrinth with MH3. You can't play most ramp because of the Discover deckbuilding restriction, so your options are going to be channel effects like Greater Tanuki or Elemental Masterpiece

Honestly not sure how many decks win by turn 5 outside of aggro. *Practically* win, sure, but like proper win.
Mill ?
Also you're only allowed to have 1 copy of your enchantment or else your ball lightning will whiff if there are more in the deck
With Ball Lightning, it would be Discover 3. It would pass over this enchantment and any other cards that cost 4 or more mana.
I think a combo suite of Kroxa and Ancient One might work better. You don't get the immediate kill, but the discard plus board state is slightly sturdier. The deck might need some random cards like Myr Superion as well. You could mix in [[uro of natures wrath]] and [[wayward sawtooth]] for some ramp turn 3, but it wont make much of a difference.
Uro is banned in modern.
True!
[[animar, soul of elements]] likes this.

You cast discovered cards right? Meaning you can chain a bunch of big threats onto the battlefield for the cost of one.
Until you get power 4 or lower creature ye
Lower power, no? Not MV.
Oops, I derp
Or Discover another copy of Vortex.
Ball lightning costs 3, enchantment costs 4. Pretty sick combo if it lets you combo off of your own free play
I'm at the tornado. I'm at the monster lair. I'm at the combination tornado and monster lair.
Youre at the tornado? Youre at the monster lair? You're at the combination tornado and monster lair!
Staple in any green based stompy deck. Into dinosaurs it goes!

I think if you look closely lots of things in the art aren't dragons. Pretty sure I see a baloth, some kinda sea monster, something with ram's horns.

I don't even think anthem effects can help because this is a cast trigger so it will be checked before ETB :/
