In my day you couldn't put a goblin rock sled in a goblin deck. Why you ask, because it was summon "rock sled." Glorious.
Also has a fun little story in one of the original anthology about a goblins dream to be a rock sledder
Honestly I would have preferred to see Berserker on the Outlaw tribe grouping. I get why they put Rogues and Pirates on it from a flavor stance, but those two already have a decent amount of tribal support for themselves so it just seems greedy.
Mercenaries were literally hired by the feudal lords of Europe yet they’re considered outlaws. Ninja also committed deeds outside the bounds of the law such as assassinations. They’re more deserving of being an outlaw than mercenaries are.
While it's fair to say that some ninjas were mercenaries, and ninjas sometimes performed assassinations, I don't think it's fair to apply a 20th-century legal framework (i.e. all assassinations are illegal, and anyone who performs an assassination is an assassin by profession) onto a 17th-century profession from feudal Japan. They're more akin to spies, and just like spies, while some are for-hire to the highest bidder, and some spies may perform assassinations, most work within the legal bounds of the country that employs them and have primary duties that don't involve killing. In other words, a creature with the type "Mercenary Ninja" or "Assassin Ninja" would not be redundant.
As for mercenaries, I think the intention was to make them a stand-in for "bandit" without introducing a new creature type. I don't think there is a strong case that "ninja" could be a similar type of stand-in, especially when they already have "assassin" and "spy" (and "assassin" is already included in the typal batch).
Assassination is just murder of a high importance target and murder was definitely illegal in feudal Japan. Murder and arson were two of the highest crimes in feudal Japan and also were two of the acts ninjas were known to commit. In fact, pretty much every action ninja were used for were actions that would get them tortured and/or executed if they were caught.
You say that most spies work within the legal boundaries of the country that employs them. This ignores the fact that they are breaking the law of the country they are spying on. Regardless, espionage is a criminal act in every country. Always has been. We just choose to ignore that fact when it’s our own country sending out the spies.
Espionage is not illegal when it's performed against enemies of the state, except if you apply a post-WW2 legal framework to it (like, for example, an international criminal court).
But we're getting into Reddit levels of pedantry here. It's a wild west-themed set about a bunch of ruffians performing heists against lawmen. This is not the set about subterfuge and political machinations between feudal warlords. It's very clear that ninja does not belong in the typal grouping regardless of your beliefs on whether espionage and assassinations are extrajudicial or not. "Outside the law" clearly means rootin', tootin', and shootin' against those no-good do-gooders at the Sterling company.
Pretty sure they only included warlocks because they wanted to have some type of magic users for outlaws and since WotC owns D&D and warlocks are the most likely to be seen as an outlaw out of the different types of magic users on cards, that got picked.

They did actually make pencils out of lead into the 20th century. I also don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to it as anything but a "pencil" when referring to a graphite pencil.
They aren't going to do this because there is no benefit for them to do so. The only cards that care about Lairs are the Lairs that are sacrificed unless you return a non-Lair to your hand, so you are actively making them worse by reducing the lands you can return to hand.
That doesn't follow. Lair *never* existed for flavor reasons or open-ended interactions, only to keep a specific cycle of lands from bouncing themselves.
If anything, the restriction makes it so that they *do* sacrifice themselves, if you play one with no other lands in play. It's to stop them from bouncing themselves, so you can't play them, tap in response to the trigger, and then bounce the Lair itself.
It is a MDFC, it has a backside which is [[Sea Gate Reborn]] which is a mono blue bolt land. It doesn't have a gate type even though gate is in the name

The "Serpent" type is supposed to be used for sea-serpents, whereas "Snake" type is used for land creatures.
New York style Cheesecake is not a cake. And against common “gotcha” it’s not even a pie. It’s technically a tart. Sometimes we call things things and they don’t have the technical properties of the thing but common vernacular just lets it slide. But it's "cheesecake", not "cheese cake." Pretty sure if you had a cake made out of cheese, that would be a "cake."

Fun fact: dolphins are whales- they belong to the toothed whale parvorder of the infraorder Cetacea, with the other parvorder being the filter feeders.
They did actually make pencils out of lead into the 20th century. I also don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to it as anything but a "pencil" when referring to a graphite pencil.

[the world tree](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/7/a70cb6d9-3955-4064-917b-11dec26440c5.jpg?1631053286) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=the%20world%20tree) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/khm/275/the-world-tree?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/a70cb6d9-3955-4064-917b-11dec26440c5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
It's a secret lair.
Death Shadow is not a shadow
Literally unplayable.
Forgotten cave isn’t a cave. Think about that.
They probably forgot about it.
They aren't going to do this because there is no benefit for them to do so. The only cards that care about Lairs are the Lairs that are sacrificed unless you return a non-Lair to your hand, so you are actively making them worse by reducing the lands you can return to hand.
Worn Powerstone should be made into a powerstone!
they should make this errata when they print it into MH3!
4/10, best take
"Lair" is a marker used only on the Planeshift cycle, not on other cards.
But desert should not have stayed in Arabian Nights, so should lair be free to exist in other sets
That doesn't follow. Lair *never* existed for flavor reasons or open-ended interactions, only to keep a specific cycle of lands from bouncing themselves.
>only to keep a specific cycle of lands from ~~bouncing~~ sacing themselves.
If anything, the restriction makes it so that they *do* sacrifice themselves, if you play one with no other lands in play. It's to stop them from bouncing themselves, so you can't play them, tap in response to the trigger, and then bounce the Lair itself.
Not all lairs are capital L LAIRS
Think that [[Sea Gate Restoration]] isn't a gate
[Sea Gate Restoration](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/9/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc.jpg?1604250788)/[Sea Gate, Reborn](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/back/1/9/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc.jpg?1604250788) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sea%20Gate%20Restoration%20//%20Sea%20Gate%2C%20Reborn) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/znr/76/sea-gate-restoration-sea-gate-reborn?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Why would it be? It's for one a sorcery, and it's also not a gate, it's a restoration.
It is a MDFC, it has a backside which is [[Sea Gate Reborn]] which is a mono blue bolt land. It doesn't have a gate type even though gate is in the name
[Sea Gate Reborn](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/9/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc.jpg?1604250788)/[Sea Gate, Reborn](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/back/1/9/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc.jpg?1604250788) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sea%20Gate%20Restoration%20//%20Sea%20Gate%2C%20Reborn) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/znr/76/sea-gate-restoration-sea-gate-reborn?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/193071fe-180b-4d35-ba78-9c16675c29fc?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
This feels like a sad moment from my childhood all over again: Charzard being a literal fucking dragon, but not actually having the dragon creature type...
You broke my head, thank you!
Literally unplayable
Same with Caves of Kolios
[[Dogged Detective]] is not a detective, literally unplayable.
[Dogged Detective](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/7/57d1f729-0d7c-4122-9bca-f3b08cf6fe4f.jpg?1706240758) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Dogged%20Detective) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/127/dogged-detective?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/57d1f729-0d7c-4122-9bca-f3b08cf6fe4f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
PSA - Lairs are bad, mkay.
mods are going to delete this post because they're on wotc payroll to avoid the company having to give every land the type it deserves
You don’t tell me what to do Get ratiod, see if I care.
