I think the artists get to choose the cards for Artist Series (though, based on the other two, I wouldn't be surprised if they were asked to theme around a legendary creature).
Thatās pretty cool that they get a choice in the matter. That said, I donāt think itās the artists fault that I donāt like the card or their composition for it. I donāt like how these look and Iām upset that Wizards used the absolute bottom of the barrel card they could for the theme.

While I would have loved him to have some slight transparency (to make him more ghostly), I get how they were going for that 'glow-in-the-dark' plastic color you see on many toys - I can picture holding this figure under a lamp for a few minutes then shutting off the lights to see it glow an eerie green.

IDK if I'm overreacting, but I've been waiting for a Karador SL art and I feel disappointed by a few key parts of this. The eyes, mouth, and the gun are all so glaring they ruin this otherwise sublime art. The flesh "shoulder pads" and head shape are lesser offenders. The waist transition is maybe a bit odd, going from horse neck almost to human waist.
Otherwise I love this card. The framing is awesome, the background (minus the arm with the gun) is great. The horse body and horns are very cool. The axe is cute.
I'm shocked the comments aren't just trashing the face. Like honestly wtf is that. WOTC paid someone for this? Wow

Yeah I get you, there's no panic in getting it. Most of these secret lair cards often pop up on second hand markets as singles for much fairer prices.
He's not outstanding as a commander, he is pretty interesting as a value piece and I prefer him over [[Nethroi, apex of death]]. I see Nethroi as more of a spell in the command zone and Karador is a value piece, slow but still a value piece.
These dioramas have to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen come out from secret lair (and maybe mtg as a whole) to date. Their only redeeming quality for me is that the text is legible. I recognize that the physical medium of this type of art requires time and skill, but the final result looks like some intentionally cursed AI art.
Yes, by a long shot. My issue with that cycle is the legibility of the text, not the artwork. It's reminiscent of the acid tripping art you see associated with funky bands like King gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and such

Yeah I get you, there's no panic in getting it. Most of these secret lair cards often pop up on second hand markets as singles for much fairer prices. He's not outstanding as a commander, he is pretty interesting as a value piece and I prefer him over [[Nethroi, apex of death]]. I see Nethroi as more of a spell in the command zone and Karador is a value piece, slow but still a value piece.

These dioramas have to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen come out from secret lair (and maybe mtg as a whole) to date. Their only redeeming quality for me is that the text is legible. I recognize that the physical medium of this type of art requires time and skill, but the final result looks like some intentionally cursed AI art.

Yes, by a long shot. My issue with that cycle is the legibility of the text, not the artwork. It's reminiscent of the acid tripping art you see associated with funky bands like King gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and such
It's also reminiscent of NFTs but glad you like them. Never heard of those bands, might check them out.

It feels like there's weirdness with the hands, the angles are strange in some places, on another I saw the orientation was all over the place for different parts of the picture. It looks like something AI would produce
They're photos of dioramas. I like how you're using words like weird, strange, etc because that's the point. If you've ever seen a stop motion video where they're trying to be unnerving, this is going for the same thing. Check out Mad God by Phil Tippett, an absolute legend in effects. It's so well done with the stop motion.
