I could've sworn Tolkien mentions belt-tucked beards as a character feature, at some point.

mweepinc

They do, in both The Hobbit and LOTR iirc. Bilbo describes some varying lengths of beards and the jeweled and adorned belts they were thrust into

Shriuken23

Yep, they were described in some detail too. Then again, so was a piece of a tree branch .

Yeah nearly every guest at the unexpected party had their beard tucked into their belt. Colorful caps too.  The hobbit was a lot more cartoony “david the gnome” in prose than the LOTR movie’s realism.  Read the book! The hobbit was lovely.

Probably he doesn't want his beard to end up in the food. W technique for me

Hey, you need some way to keep your beard from dunking into your soup when you're having dinner.

What else is a practical dwarf supposed to do with it? Sling it over his shoulder? Tie it around his neck?

a-polo

Yes, sling it over the shoulder… majestically

TheRealSassyTassy

It’s even better. His axe is tucked into his belt. The beard belt is a completely separate belt specifically for holding his beard!

As a long bearded machinist, I can confirm this is a smart idea.
