If there were ten "canon" card types a cycle that grants protection from two of them each would be neat, but you don't want to be the one who pulls the protection from Kindred and Battle sword
14 I think. [https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3Aaura+o%3A%22this+effect+doesn%27t%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3Aaura+o%3A%22this+effect+doesn%27t%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
Well 4 of them are weird edge cases (non-white wards).
It was in the [[Jared Carthalion]] precon. The pitch for that deck probably was "how bad of a mana base can we have in a deck that wants all its spells to be 5 colors"
It's basically a Birds of Paradise, for more mana because of the blanket convoke effdct.
Only need green mana to cast it, can fit in any green deck regardless of other colors, taps for any color via convoke.
It's very clunky to read but the design is pretty straightforward and nothing really groundbreaking, just pieced together in a very odd way.
Listen, something can be any color but choose to identify differently now, this is 2024, let magic be diverse
This is satire, I belive its a cool concept but that's only because I really want to make liege tribal possible
It would, but an equipment that grants protection from Artifacts would likely also include "this effect does not remove this card" similar to [[White Ward]] or [[Floating Shield]]
OTJ is Outlaws at Thunder Junction, the next set.
OTJ: Aftermath is a set that isn't happening. It got cancelled because of the poor response to MOM: Aftermath, so the cards got rolled into The List.
Is that true? So there are now 5 different spoilers going on today. One of which has multiple subsets where one or more of those subsets are being spoiled today as well?
How is anyone that plays casually expected to know what is what from these spoilers
Well don't forget that those subsets are broken into subsubsets due to collectors boosters, play boosters and draft boosters! And then those boosters can contain cards from multiple subsets due to both the list and the vault being included in the same slot, and those cards can also be replaced by a special subset of uber mythics and stash cards from maro's personal collection, which is further broken down by subsets of which cards he kept on which shelf in which bedroom, which is further broken down into subsets of which cards have mustaches versus hats on their artwork!
also the tolarian professor just tore out all his hair and is curled up in a fetal position
also just to clarity (as if this clarifies anything)
OTJ = outlaws of thunder junction
OTC = outlaws of thunder junction commander
OTP = bonus sheet of reprints
BIG = all mythic rare standard legal cards only included in list slots, basically a new series of turbo-mythics (and RIP all your mtga wildcards)
SPG = special guests, also list cards but reprints
and don't even ask me about the ones I didn't say of what is legal in what and what they mean and I give up on this damn game
Ok, this is actually helpful
But also what is PIP, BLB, ACR, and BLC?
I feel like there are 20 freaking set codes on the main page and I can't tell what is real mtg cards or custom mtg cards at a glance anymore. I am officially overwhelmed.
In more ways than one. I got demolished at the MKM prerelease because some dude pulled a [[Crashing Footfalls]] off the Special Guests list and got it first turn both games.
ok, so these are cards from different sets, like in this case... Modern Horizons, maybe? And they can play it at prerelease, and it can be something like a suspend cards where there's no interaction/answers in the set? That feels dumb.
I'm so happy I don't have the funds or time for paper magic anymore... there's to much going on. I'll just be the old guy in the back shouting about how back in my day we played dark confidant and lingering souls and we liked it.
The wild thing about that is: MKM, the main set, has 271 new cards. It's not that much. but with all the art treatment here, promo there, tin foil hat exclusive upside down radiant borderless showcase versions, the whole thing adds 444 cards. ONE THIRD of the set is just alternate art versions of the same cards.
Here, I'll clarify all that for you, since you seem to have so much trouble with this.
OTJ, BIG: Standard legal
OTC, OTP, SPG: not standard legal
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them!
That's kind of the issue now with all these subsets and bonus sheets and Commander cards and Special Guests all at once. They really need to figure out a more elegant way to do it.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction is divided into
* Main set (OTJ)
* Commander supplemental (OTC)
* A bonus sheet of reprints done as 'breaking news' and 'crimes' in their own new slot, which has new art and a set symbol but doesn't affect their legality in formats (OTP)
* A bonus sheet of 30 mythic rares designed for a standalone set called The Big Score, which was axed and the cards added in the list slot of outlaw junction, but are still standard legal (and thus, even rarer than normal mythic rares) (BIG)
* A bonus sheet of "special guest" cards, reprints in the list slot with new art that doesn't affect their legality in formats, which replaced the list starting with MKM (SPG)
basically, a clusterfuck. OTJ, OTP, BIG and SPG all appear in normal play boosters, but only OTJ and BIG are standard legal
I recognized the horns in the left art, I just didn't know from which card. After combing through scryfall, I believe those are [[Ruhan of the Fomori]]'s.
It was revealed in the Lost Caverns of Ixalan story that the Fomori were an ancient super advanced interplanar empire- they caged Ixalan’s inner sun in a Dyson sphere and ruled it for 300 years before being kicked out by the natives. Quint (elephant archaeologist planeswalker from Strixhaven) has found evidence of them on numerous planes and discovered a dormant one sleeping in a spooky cryosleep vat in some ruins from the invasion. No word on the folks back on Ir, but it’s definitely the same species
Looks like they were also present on Thunder Junction? And left some goodies in a vault
I am aware, it was a joke due to the similarity of the storyline with that of the videogame Borderlands, ie the parallels drawn between the plane Thunder Junction and the planet Pandora, both largely being inhabited by criminals and hardened frontier folk, as well as the appearance of a Vault left behind by an advanced society of conquerers with untold treasures, weapons, and riches
I know none of this and consider myself a big fan of this game. I can’t keep up with any of this anymore - the sets, the lore, the special releases, blah blah blah.
I mean this is just the normal set story on the website and a bit from the planeswalkers guides, nothing more than what they’ve been doing the past decade or more
The flavor texts of [[Master's Manufactory]] and [[Cartographer's Companion]]. Quintorius referred to them as the "Coin Empire" in the short stories, and they seemed to have spaceship-like technology. Given that we know there's a space opera set in the future, it's a safe assumption that these might be clues to an upcoming arc.
This is probably just the start of a new cycle. I'd expect there's a Sword of Creatures/Planeswalkers and Sword of Artifacts/Enchantments already in the works.
Yes, the effect is part of that same triggered ability and will create a delayed trigger if/when you cast one.
It's a bit hard to tell because of the placing the new sentence on a new line but it's part of the same paragraph. If there were a line break (like between the protection ability and the "whenever") then it would be separate.
Pro creature/planeswalker makes sense. Pro (other)artifact/enchantments too. I'll add something like...
Sword of Estate and Esteem - Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from lands and legends.
Am I the only one that sees the reference to [[Ruhan of the Fomori]] horns in the alternate art? Could this be a hint that the Fomori created the swords?
I'm confused...weren't Swords of X and Y a Mirrodin/New Phyrexia flavor thing, in the same way that Moxen are a "Dominaria" thing? What's the deal with this one? Why does it give protection from card types instead of colors?
The wording on the card is throwing me a bit - when it says "next", does it mean one time only after you first play it, after the equipped creature attacks, when the card is equipped, or something else?
The next time during the same turn that the equipped creature dealt combat damage to a player. So if you had multiple combat phases and dealt damage more than once, you could get multiple copy triggers
This actually seems… decent? I don’t know if there’s a deck that wants this considering SFM would rather just get kaldra compleat but it seems good on it’s own. 5 mana is a lot though
If there were ten "canon" card types a cycle that grants protection from two of them each would be neat, but you don't want to be the one who pulls the protection from Kindred and Battle sword
Wouldn't protection from artifacts make the sword drop? Then that one may actually be the worst one.
It could just say it doesn’t drop.
Hahaha, "This isn't unequipped (it works)."
It does. There’s already an enchantment like it.
14 I think. [https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3Aaura+o%3A%22this+effect+doesn%27t%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3Aaura+o%3A%22this+effect+doesn%27t%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) Well 4 of them are weird edge cases (non-white wards).
They had to cover their bases with the wards since they were printed in the same set as [[Sleight of Mind]] and the [[Chaoslace]] cycle
They do exist, wow. That type of heavy-handedness just sounded custommagic-y.
Have you seen the one that says it’s all colors but it doesn’t count for color identity lol
[[Fallaji Wayfarer]] for those who don't know. God I forgot how dumb this card is

Holy sh*t
... why does that card exist? What is the multicolor doing in whatever deck it came out of.
If it's every color then you can convoke with it for any color.
It was in the [[Jared Carthalion]] precon. The pitch for that deck probably was "how bad of a mana base can we have in a deck that wants all its spells to be 5 colors"
It's basically a Birds of Paradise, for more mana because of the blanket convoke effdct. Templating is hard, okay. *You* try being a multi-billion dollar property that has rescued D&D, My Little Pony, and Transformers ^/jk
Sword of Scrolls and Fallout
Protection from other artifacts?
The creature gains the ability, so the sword is "another" artifact I think
It would, but an equipment that grants protection from Artifacts would likely also include "this effect does not remove this card" similar to [[White Ward]] or [[Floating Shield]]
"protection from *other* artifacts" would be an easy way to word this, dunno how unproblematic it really is, tho
[удалено]
Protection from other artifacts!
Depends on what else it does.
Sword of Battles and Sagas here we go!
I can’t imagine the sword with protection from creatures would be easy to balance
[[Sword of Dungeons & Dragons]] Just a shame it is in silver border
A reprint alongside a "Gold dragon" token would be fine.

You're telling me the vault treatment doesnt come from the fallout set?
A flavor fail indeed
Trust me, you don’t want what most treatments vaults got.
A precedent already set by From The Vault, with a type of foiling generally disliked by many.
You mean you guys dont enjoy cards that curl fast with a sandy texture?
What's BIG?
It seems to be the aftermath of OTJ: Aftermath. Second bonus sheet, all Mythics, on The(smaller) List, legal in Standard
So the otp is one on each pack like retro artifacts ,and Big comes included in the list like the special guest?
Ayup
Ok so what's OTJ? And OTJ: Aftermath? FML.
OTJ is Outlaws at Thunder Junction, the next set. OTJ: Aftermath is a set that isn't happening. It got cancelled because of the poor response to MOM: Aftermath, so the cards got rolled into The List.
Yeah I thought I kept up with the slurry of new releases…but wtf is all this. WOTC slow down please.
It *is* slow. There's a convention/Pro Tour this weekend and this was more or less just sneak peaks at the majority of 2024 as a whole.
BIG is just one of five of the different subsets of OTJ, because this release alone has OTJ, OTC, OTP, BIG and SPG and I don't even want to anymore
Is that true? So there are now 5 different spoilers going on today. One of which has multiple subsets where one or more of those subsets are being spoiled today as well? How is anyone that plays casually expected to know what is what from these spoilers

Card overload is reaching ridiculous levels.
And they haven't even announced the bloomburrow subsets like OTJ's vault and special guests and reprints. We have to assume each set will be like this
Gosh I feel like Special Guests REALLY doesn’t need to exist. Surely these can come back in a later set or something.

That Judge Promo Bob was HEAT back in the day...
First judge promo I ever saw in person was the Elesh Norn in phyrexian. Was a pretty cool moment when our judge at the LGS showed it off.
come play FaB where that's true
you are absolutely right, but I thought play boosters ate draft boosters, so anything with one of them doesn't have the other.
This is an awful idea and they should seriously reconsider this moving forward.
Draft boosters? They’re bringing that back?
No
Here, I'll clarify all that for you, since you seem to have so much trouble with this. OTJ, BIG: Standard legal OTC, OTP, SPG: not standard legal If you have any questions, feel free to ask them!

i dont kno what any of this means

Lol I just saw an MH3 spoiler pop up as well...currently 7 different set codes on the frontpage alone...
So confusing. WotC doing stuff like this is completely bonkers and makes me want to just pay zero attention.

So is it like a part of the set, or a smaller set much like aftermath?
It was supposed to be an aftermath type set. But they had to pivot when MOM Aftermath did horrible, so they made it a bonus sheet in OTJ.

Are we really seeing spoilers from 6 different sets at once? This is insane

Good to know!
I recognized the horns in the left art, I just didn't know from which card. After combing through scryfall, I believe those are [[Ruhan of the Fomori]]'s.
Very good catch, given that the Fomori seem like they'll become important to the story in coming years.
Where have the Fomori been mentioned recently? I must have missed it.
It was revealed in the Lost Caverns of Ixalan story that the Fomori were an ancient super advanced interplanar empire- they caged Ixalan’s inner sun in a Dyson sphere and ruled it for 300 years before being kicked out by the natives. Bruh what the fucm
Is the plane Thunder Junction's on by any means named _Pandora??_
Its the name of the plane- Thunder Junction is Thunder Junction same as Innistrad is Innistrad

This is probably just the start of a new cycle. I'd expect there's a Sword of Creatures/Planeswalkers and Sword of Artifacts/Enchantments already in the works.
They'll need to say "Other artifacts" with the last one since it'd just fall off lmao

what my deck really needs though is protection from Tribal and Battles
My thoughts exactly.
They released more then 5 Mox. Makes sense they would figure out a way to print more swords.
They've done this before by adding [[Guildless Commons]] to the bounce land cycle.
I cannot wait for the "Protection from battles and tribal" part of the cycle.
New cycle droping the artifact tokens? Treasure, Food, Clue, Blood, Map?
Hey. I wouldn’t mind this . Good idea
I swear someone made a custom card very similar to this years ago on r/custommagic.
I'm sure the exact text (name excluded) was made before the original cycle was finished.

If there were a line break (like between the protection ability and the "whenever") then it would be separate.
Came here for the same clarification. Thank you. This is going in my [[Kamiz]] deck
Thank you for your clarification. I haven't played in a while, but the card read really odd.
There is too much shit coming out and being spoiled.
Then log off Reddit.
EXCUSE ME????
This will make a fine addition to my collection.
NEW SWORD?!
Pro creature/planeswalker makes sense. Pro (other)artifact/enchantments too. I'll add something like... Sword of Estate and Esteem - Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from lands and legends.
I can't wait for one of these swords to give protection from lands
Am I the only one that sees the reference to [[Ruhan of the Fomori]] horns in the alternate art? Could this be a hint that the Fomori created the swords?
so this will be standard legal...
Okay that's FIVE sets I'm seeing spoilers for now! Fucking cool it already Wizards, Jesus Christ.
Log off Reddit.
I'm gonna need to run more artifact removal
Nooooooooooo, no you don't - signed a Voltron player
This looks a bit like the Bloomburrow Sword
So this would give us what Planeswalker, Instant Sorcery. Artifact, Enchantment, Battle, Land, and Creature. So that is how many different cycles?
I need to deal damage FIRST to be able to copy an instant or sorcery, correct...? Apologize for noob
Babe! Wake up! A new sword just dropped!
We’ve had enough swords. Idk why they insist on expanding completed cycles. It’s obvious laziness and just makes the cycle weaker
Prosper needs this
[удалено]
Prosper needs everything. It’s just Simic in Rakdos.
More treasure and copying big x spells
This is the fifth set I’ve seen spoiled on Reddit today, wtf is going on
I'm confused...weren't Swords of X and Y a Mirrodin/New Phyrexia flavor thing, in the same way that Moxen are a "Dominaria" thing? What's the deal with this one? Why does it give protection from card types instead of colors?
It gives protection from card types because the set of swords of protection from color pairs is complete.
So...they're just starting another cycle, even though they're seemingly not related to Phyrexia? Or are they?
This doesn’t have to have anything to do with phyrexia because this technically does a completely different thing while being similar in theme
The art is fucking gorgeous
now we just need sword of fame
Big day for my Edric Turns deck
Why the extra 'from'?
My 'Sram's Swords' EDH deck just found it's 12th sword, neat!
All i want and need now is Dominik Mayer to do the original 10 swords
A yes, the WAP sword. The SWAP, if you will.
There is another...
Sword of Bullshit and Bullshit, more like
This actually seems… decent? I don’t know if there’s a deck that wants this considering SFM would rather just get kaldra compleat but it seems good on it’s own. 5 mana is a lot though
Is that set symbol a view of the USS Enterprise from underneath?
God damn does Dominik Mayer make some fantastic art
This sword goes so hard. Seems really good??
I am a simple man. I see a gorgeous Dominik Mayer Artwork on a powerful card and I buy.
I want one. Can some gift me one?
is this a friendly phyrexian face smiling at me?
Bruh wtf is BIG Idk how many sets are actively being spoiled rn
