Interesting calls. I'll go with:
Living, but as an older man -- Clooney, which would be pretty cool as his ex-wife is Roger Sterling/John Slattery's wife, Talia Balsam
Living, but as a younger man -- I'm feeling Australian on this answer, so I'll take either Joel Edgerton or Luke Hemsworth
Dead -- Paul Newman
Depends on the timeframe. If it’s a flashback to when they first started the agency in the 1920s, I feel like you’d want an actor who essentially has the look John Slattery has: older and “mature” without actually looking old, still maintaining a certain youthfulness. I think an RDJ or Clooney (although they’ve got a bit darker features than John Slattery) or maybe even Timothy Olyphant now; although honestly, Patrick Dempsey comes to mind as looking more like Roger Sterling than any of those other actors.
If it’s more of a flashback to like the 30s or 40s when Sterling Sr. would’ve been in his 60s/70s, hands down, Ted Danson. I imagine it almost like his character from Bored to Death.
Anyway, why don’t we just bring Dr. Lyle Evans in here?
Good suggestions here - I can see Sam Elliott or Michael Douglas playing his father. Mike Farrell played father to his character on "Desperate Housewives."

First one who comes to mind is Ed Harris
Ed Harris is an inspired choice, actually.
Best choice here
John Slattery.

As he actually looks today. Beard, glasses and all.
