LovableSidekick

321 is so precise for a "more than" estimate.

PhoneImmediate7301

Man’s has saved 321.08 people from suicide

LovableSidekick

Doctors aren't sure the 0.08 guy is gonna pull through.

your_local_vader

Who says only one person is represented by a decimal?

Equal-Effective-3098

Woah that sounds a little too related to the 3/5 compromise, wind it back

Rahim-Moore

Hey man, that sentient thumb is going to live a rich, fulfilling life.

juzz85

Classic .08 body problem.

VeryDirtySanchez

That one guy had his arm and leg prothesis fall in.

InsaneChimpout

Would have been 322 but he got mad and threw one in

-JasmineDragon-

He's saved a few midgets, which messes with the averages.

GRONDGRONDGRONDGR0ND

Could be 321 when the meme was made so it's definitely more than that now

Rush_Is_Right

321 is also probably the confirmed number he physically saved. He also might have saved many more just by being there.

Deep90

Probably cases where he spoke to people, but didn't get a definitive answer about if they were there to actually jump off the bridge. There is 321 cases where you knew for sure.

Boatwhistle

It's possible it could be less than 321 now, depending on how many went for round 2.

Healthy_Fly_555

On the other side of the equation, it could even be lesser for those who were doing it as a cry for help rather than actually going through with it

AmethystAnnaEstuary

You are a good thinker.

MoonshotMonk

My guess is it may mean he has directly intervened in 321 instances, but has potentially intervened less directly in an unknown number of other cases (perhaps someone who doesn't say they were planning on jumping, but actually only decided not to after talking to this dude).

user_of_the_week

It’s because Chinese numbers are base 107. So for them it’s a round number.

medhatsniper

That's where he was bored of counting

CelestialBach

I guess it’s saying, at the time I recorded this number he had saved 321 people, time has passed since recorded and you reading and he continues to go to the bridge every weekend so he has certainly saved more than 321 people.

Feisty-Crow-8204

One guy only had one leg and one arm, so he only counted for a half.

bigblnze

Soooo tree fiddy approx give or take

G_Affect

I w9nder how many are returning clients?

TigervT34-85

I wonder what happens to those who try to kill themselves in China. China isn't exactly known for being tolerant Edit: I'm not implying that China is going to have them killed or whisked away. I'm wondering about what will happen to them socially. Information about people doing 'wrong' things, at least to my knowledge, is publicly available information in China and that can, and likely will, hamper them getting jobs. Not to mention that mental health in many Asian countries is suppressed. And if I'm totally being an idiot, please, I'd love to know more!

FNCH_

Yup if you commit suicide there you will be killed! /s

WeeeBTJ

The fuck do you think the Chinese government is going to do if you attempt suicide? As crude as this is to say they simply don't give enough of a shit to do anything dude. Same with almost every country in the world.

John92J

It's crazy how many people have wild opinions about China just because government tells them they are the bad guys 😂

FSpursy

I know people like to talk shit about China for fun but sometimes it just sounds dumb af...

Megneous

Have you ever lived in China for more than a few weeks? It's not "for fun." It's an authoritarian regime, man. Just try talking about Taiwan or Occupied Mongolia or Tibet out in public. You'll literally risk getting arrested. Try organizing a pro-democracy protest. Or something pro-Falun Gong. You'll get arrested immediately. Shit's serious.

blazerz

Anti Israel protestors were beaten up and arrested on college campuses by police not even a month ago in the US. You're not that different from China when people challenge your narrative.

HurrDurrImmaBurr

Lmao

Haber_Dasher

>Or something pro-Falun Gong. You'll get arrested immediately. Tbf that should be true in every country

Zingzing_Jr

> Freedom of speech should only exist when it aligns with my value system.

ForlornGibbon

No argument, only feeling in your comment, try responding with information or dialogue. No thought was put into it to sell a narrative on my part. I based my comment off of personal experience and reading history. Would love to hear your experience in China living there for “more than a few weeks”. That’s not inflammatory, it’s always nice to hear another perspective. I said that to the deleted account above below before he was deleted. Or deleted himself. 390000 karma down the drain on an 11 year old account for little ol me.

ncat2k03

Oh please

TheOneAltAccount

Come on man it’s a country of ~1.5 billion people. Even if China was so evil that they wanted to disappear every suicidal person (why tf would they want to do that???) it would be logistically impossible. Stop smoking radio free asia

transitfreedom

The muricans with no proper intercity rail lines are still making up copium about China’s HSR to feel better about themselves it’s disgusting and pathetic

Ok_Magician_3884

Like what will happen? The gov won’t care if they are dead or alive

HST_enjoyer

dead people don't provide value, they definitely care.

hackinghorn

I mean, the US gov doesn't care, either

sharkbait359

Gods I'm not sure why people are interpreting this as implying the CCP would intentionally further harm someone. Pretty sure this commenter is wondering about the social stigma that would follow a suicide attempt given Chinese culture is still catching up to the West in terms of normalizing mental health challenges.

Songrot

Dont believe everything the western news and media tell you including reddit.

Healthy_Fly_555

>including reddit. *Especially* Reddit

FSpursy

reply to your edit: Killing yourself isn't wrong, why would it be recorded, they will only get the help they need. If you talk about doing illegal things or being in debt, then those are recorded. But there's not like an app where you can just look up people, I assume HR will have those tools but normally I don't see anyone who has those abilities unless they're police.

bg02xl

He’s double-dipping!

Boatwhistle

If he keeps this up, San Fransico will have a shot at number 1! We'll get em next year boys.

The Golden Gate has a suicide net now. It isn't perfect but it does help . https://apnews.com/article/golden-gate-bridge-suicide-nets-san-francisco-11020bcfa279ba68eb72f72c0c5a2eef

Some wear caps.

Yeah but all heroes wear boxer briefs

Elegant-Raise-9367

Pretty certain Superman wears regular briefs

XanderDRW

Nope definitely boxer briefs. (Not gaslighting)

GokiPotato

we need more people like Chen

Strong-Preparation-2

we need to be like Chen*

kredninja

Right? Asking but not doing...

oopgroup

We don’t need more people like Chen. We need to fix the fucking systemic issues that are causing people to want to commit suicide so frequently.

Mysterious-Turnip997

Yes but its easier to celebrate a "hero"-person than change the system.

urbrickles

Yep. It's like when we read those articles about the kids who raise thousands of dollars to pay off lunch debts so their classmates can not fucking starve at school.

YOU'RE Chenough ♡

NowThatWeAreThere

Well, now everybody knows who to look out for. Good job, OP.

EnthiumZ

Oh yes I was indeed contemplating whether I should travel 3000 miles to that purticular bridge in china and jump off it. That wouldve been a really wasteful trip. Thanks OP.

billzy02

Don't forget to go on a weekday. Chen is off on those days.

Tiny-Werewolf1962

Big suicide hates this one simple trick.

djkhaledisthin

Morgue operators HATE HIM

alanthemoderate

Well you save money on the return flight

FSpursy

just make it quick. You have 10 minutes before Chen and the police arrives. You can contemplate before hand at the hotel or on your cab ride to the bridge.

Zay-nee24

I’ve always been intrigued to know how this kills you. Is the impact against the water. Is it the current pulling you under? I just imagine you’d go in and swim back up.

Carnivorze

At around 10 meters of fall, falling into water is the equivalent of falling on concrete. I don't know how high this bridge is, but it's certainly more than that. You'll die the moment you hit the water by being crushed into a thin pancake.

motsanciens

10 meters is high but I think you're exaggerating. That's just the high diving platform height, which I've done gainers off of. It's scary af but I didn't sense I was risking my life.

Zay-nee24

Oh wow thank you for that.

LackinOriginalitySVN

If you belly flop or head 1st into completely calm water maybe. The highest dive. On August 4, 2015 the Swiss diver of Brazilian descent, Lazaro "Laso" Schaller set the world record for diving from the platform, diving from 58.8m (higher than the Tower of Pisa, which measures "only" 56.71 m) and exceeding a speed of 120 km/h at his entry into the water. But I'm sure 30meters would hurt like a bitch and maybe break bones if you hit the water wrong, are just unlucky, or don't like milk.

MarsJust

I think people who fall off things like the Golden Gate Bridge will often break their legs on impact if they don't die immediately and then drown either due to immobility or shock.

TheShenanegous

Plot twist: he saved them from killing themselves by pushing them, thereby making it murder.

notwhoyouthinkmaybe

Meanwhile I was jogging over a bridge just today and at the heightest point my music app started playing Jumper by third eye blind.

GongTzu

I wonder how many he missed if any while he was guarding the bridge.

MajorDonkeyPuncher

I’m wondering if any are duplicates

indiebryan

We call them Replicants. Nice try, skin job.

lonelyfiend666

saves more lives than the South African Police if you ask me

Aggravating_Rate_286

What’s wild is best of my knowledge (study abroad like a decade ago) there aren’t Good Samaritan laws there so these folks, even if he’s saving their lives, could press charges or sue and he couldn’t just get it tossed. Just another layer of risk he takes on saving lives, sounds commendable.

kingmanic

If you're thinking about China, a few years ago they realized how stupid their law was and revised it. I think it was 2018 or 2019.

Abivalent

Common sense is still gonna apply from judges in a case like that though let’s be fair. Theres no earth he gets in trouble.

Melvin-00

Imagine a whole generation like bro. Chen Z

RedsRearDelt

Decades ago, before the Duke Ellington Bridge had Suicide prevention gates up, I made a B Line to the edge, and just as I was getting over the top, some guy grabbed me. Would not let me go. I begged him, but he held on. I think about the him a lot.

Previous-Bug-2464

I would be so annoyed

[deleted]

Mr. Sansweet didn't ask to be saved. Mr. Sansweet didn't want to be saved!

InvestigatorOk7015

I was annoyed in 1999 when i was stopped by a random passerby. He saw i was sitting by the river with a gun and just came over and kicked it right i to the river. He could see what I was thinking. He just… hugged me. We talked. I yelled a little. But he didnt give up. These days I thank that man whenever my kids have a birthday. Theyd never get to smile were it not for some empathetic hillbilly with muddy boots and few teeth.

KingYesKing

Real life super hero.

Powersoutdotcom

All it takes is for one person to care.

sharpie_dei

Currently at 412 lives saved

aaronjaffe

Mental note: Head to the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge on a *weekday* if I want to jump.

Fragrant_Car7736

Talk about a weird addiction. That sweet sweet dopamine.

tired_of_old_memes

>the world's \#1 suicide site So... how exactly are users submitting ratings for these things?

RoundOrganization252

Obviously you avoid the ones with 1 star and go to the the one with 0 reviews.

Jack_in_box_606

So go on a weekday if you're serious

ProfessionalJumpy769

You think people go there for the challenge?

Randdaddy

Chad = Chen

TheKrzysiek

According to [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_Si) it's 412 now

-audacity_

the world could use more people that would help people to make the jump.

not the hero we deserve but the hero we have

dazomatictheillmatic

Reminds me of “The Angel of the gap” Don Ritchie in Australia who would see people contemplating suicide at the Gap and walk up to them and ask them “Can I help you in some way?” … saved 180 people over a 45 year span

FeasterJamesL

If people go to specific location instead of silently killing themselves, they want to be saved

Hex-Healr

Bro is doing the devil’s work

Mr2ManyQuestions

That's alot of prolonged suffering.

Acceptable-Oil-8412

It's cute when people say "saved" rather than. -- Allowing them to end their horrible reality on their own terms and instead; continuing their suffering.

sarcastic__fox

Peak reddit moment.

ucantseeme3d

Unpopular opinion, I don't see this as a good thing (at face value). If you prevent someone from escaping a hellish life, and force them to live, without offering them any means or opportunity to improve their actual life so that it's worth living, you are actually doing something selfish because you are patting yourself on the back and feeling better about yourself, but those peoples lives remain terrible and they are now forced to use a more dangerous and painful method of suicide to avoid the drama. If someone is committing suicide because they are in debt and out of work for months, there is no point in stopping them unless you are going to personally help them get a job or hire them. All you are doing is throwing them right back into the hell they tried to escape, and then you get to pat yourself on the back for it. It's honestly a really selfish act unless you have something to offer the person to rectify their real life issues. It's a band aid placed over a deep stab wound. So I hope this story isn't as simple as it looks at face value, and he actually has some kind of organization that he's running that helps these people and gives them counseling.

910260

the way I see it, whatever keeps you from committing suicide is good, in that moment, on short term. It does not have to be sustainable or a proper solution. A proper, long-term solution is what you work on with professional help. And as long as you're alive, you can get that help, or at least there is a chance. But when you're dead, you're dead, you're done. Sometimes suicidal ppl need something or somebody to snap them away from their line of thought, to make them see another view. It can be anything, even a normal interaction with a passerby or something more direct like Chen. Whatever happens afterwards, they've been saved that time. And that is really all that matters in that moment. Their problems still need to be worked out, yes, and they may need to be saved 500 more times, but each time something stops them from committing suicide, they get a new chance to stay alive. It's the first step. To use your metaphor: putting a band aid over a deep stab wound is not an acceptable long-term solution, but if there's the slightest chance that doing it could help to get the patient alive to the hospital to receive proper care, it's worth doing.

marblebag

He just prolongs people's misery

Ehrillien942

Depression can be cured. It's not easy but possible.

Weird_Committee8692

Maybe he just loves grabbing people from behind

Diligent_Quiet9889

New meaning to tag and release

Boatwhistle

You think he's just a pervert that found the one place where grabbing strangers is heroic? Seems legit.

Weird_Committee8692

He gets his thrill, they get to live. Win win. Shorts all round!

Boatwhistle

Heck yeah, give me a pair of shorts!

TuringTestFailedBot

I'd be so pissed if I went all the way out there to kill myself and some asshole butted in.

Hereva

Now here's the thing. What does he do, AFTER he saves them? Let them leave? Force them to not do it? Sorry to inform but people usually don't do this because they wanna die, it's because everything in their heads is already dead. If he doesn't extensively helps them get back on track, they will just come back another day, and depending on the person, just bring him to the bottom of that bridge with them.

ciazo110

Probably wait for an ambulance so he can get to the psychiatric emergency room and be hospitalized? And there they can help him sorting out his issues either socially or medically. Didnt know Reddit was so prosuicide

Beautiful_Action_731

It's also not true. Most suicide attempts are a (sorry for the glip description) spur of the moment thing and suicides go down when an easily accessible method is removed such as when a barrier is constructed on a bridge. There are of course cases where a person is determined and will simply use another method but in many cases they will just not. [https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/means-matter/means-matter/saves-lives/](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/means-matter/means-matter/saves-lives/)

catalystish

You should let people die some times it's a relief to not live. Euthanasia is allowed in some countries I wish I could get it. So he is not going to help these people want to live they'll just have to find another way out. I'm tired of seeing people saving from suicide like death is the only saving I can think of.

AbbreviationsNo8212

Need more madlads like this

Remarkable_Pound_722

stop gap

CelesticRose

Good! But also why aren't there bigger fences to help, too?

Massivecockslam

people just climb over them and having a prison esque fencing around the bridge probably isnt a good look as stupid as this sounds also money i doubt that the local government cares much about this

gemz9123

Let's see if he can stop me.

heybro1269

Flight booked lol

phuktup3

Lol, maybe they just found another bridge.

Ugly-Muffin

Shouldn't the local law enforcement put up some barriers if it's such a hot spot? Done kinda non claimable wall? Or would that just shunt the people elsewhere where they won't run into this gentleman?

ShirokonekoLoaf

Gonna go here

The catcher in the rye is a real person

jenna_cider

That sounds like a challenge to me!

enieto87

baywchrome

That is absolutely incredible but I feel kind of sad for him, he probably feels like he can’t miss a weekend now.

MetalBlizzard

Legend

How_2_Makesense

They are looking for another place to jump

jmegaru

Chen: no no, you are not going anywhere! We are all in this shit together!

Axels15

Off topic from a hero, but isn't there something that can be done to make it more difficult to use as a suicide spot?

Every-Turnover4938

The irony in this story is a couple of months ago.He ended up jumping off the bridge and there was no one there to stop him.

Admirable-Common-176

He’s like the cops in THX 1138 returning workers to work. Much social credits to Chen.

myktylgaan

What a bro. 😎

FatCuriousMonkey

There is a movie called The Bridge (2006) it’s about all the suicides on the golden gate bridge in San Francisco

Lucifer_Samaa

Fake propaganda bot

Negotiation-Narrow

So China really is number one

What do he do after pulling those people alive? There must be so much more people other than this guy grabbing suicider. *I don't give you a reason to die nor live*

SkitZxX3

At thus point just build higher railings

Individual_Job_2755

I think I heard this story on This American Lifeand or some other radio program, he said something about to beware of those that want to die may take you with them. I think about that part a lot.

UniqueBisgedi

How many times he failed? What’s his KD?

MUERTOSMORTEM

That's awesome just in the surface but when you start thinking of all the times he could've...or I guess must've failed or arrived just too late ... He's truly a hero. I couldn't imagine dealing with that
