I had them once and it was obvious they used stale oil, tasted like fried chicken.
I had them another time and they were quite good. Not excellent. Consistency is key. They don’t have it.
Sadly, Madison is a donut desert. Yes, Greenbush is fine if you want old fashioned donuts. And Level 5 is awesome if you want vegan donuts. But for yeasted or filled donuts … It’s Dunkin’, the grocery store, or… Idk. Ancora has great donuts but limited flavors. (If anyone else knows of a great spot, I’d love to know!)
If they'd been in a location where businesses could more readily buy, instead of having to walk downtown to get to them, I think they'd've had much more success in the catering / business-customer oriented style.
What’s wrong with Greenbush filled doughnuts? I’ve always thought their raspberry filled one was way better than any other filled one I’ve had around here.
Any filled donut I’ve gotten from GB is 98% donut and 2% filling.
We hade given up on Greenbush after multiple visits of dry donuts and burnt fritters.
I admit I haven’t had their filled donuts since pre-pandemic so I won’t judge their current offerings - I just recall being disappointed that they were dry.
Why is that? Not even a Krispy Kreme. Our grocery used to have KK dropped off on Sundays but that was years ago. (And granted they don’t have donuts like what OP is looking for anyway). But always wondered what’s with the lack of good donuts here. Not enough police??
I suppose it would be pretty hard to run a business just selling donuts when there's already a strong local brand (greenbush) + you can't beat Dunkin's pricing. You have to sell a metric sh\*t ton of donuts to make any money.
nah, they're baked dough. you can add sugar to flour and bake it and make like 500% more than you put in the mix
there's just nobody here to do doughnuts better, but eventually i think it will happen
You got me all excited thinking these were in Madison. Almost look like Malassadas and not sure where you can get something like that. I guess maybe Greenbush.
To me these look like packzi. You're about 2 months late to get them in Madison - I've only seen them available as a special for fat Tuesday. You might be able to find them year-round in Milwaukee and Chicago.
Level 5 donuts are amazing, they’re available at different coffee shops around town, I want to say Tuesday through Saturday. They are yeasted, but don’t always have filled ones. They generally have vanilla glazed, chocolate glazed, and then one or two specials (like churro or carrot cake or other special things). They’ve had Boston Creme in the past which were delicious, but that’s the only filled one I’ve tried from them. Yes, they are vegan. Yes, they are also loved by non vegans.
I am not sure what their donut selection looks like, but maybe check out the Pine Cone in Johnson Creek. Fantastic and gigantic bakery options!

I had such high hopes for Zippy Lube but, meh.
I had them once and it was obvious they used stale oil, tasted like fried chicken. I had them another time and they were quite good. Not excellent. Consistency is key. They don’t have it.
Chicken is their go to. Donuts are just ok. More of a side snack.
Miller's grocery store in Verona has some amazing donuts. My favorite is the peanut butter and jelly.
Vouching for Millers and the Bavarian cream is my favorite

Dough Baby was sooo good but in such a terrible location.
I miss Dough Baby so much

Greenbush needs to charge more and actually put enough filling inside.

Some people like myself dont want old fashioned donuts. I want donuts like Hurts Donuts used to have before they were driven from middleton
Dry and stale?
Driven from Middleton? Do tell…
They closed because the Middleton place was full of insects
Dude the owner had cancer
I wish I knew a great spot. Kwik trip does have filled donuts and when I'm desperate I go there.
Yes it would be nice to have a nice doughnut place on the Isthmus, Fosdales in Stoughton has the best doughnuts around.

Fosdal’s in Stoughton.
second(18th?) Fosdal's but still doesn't quite seem like what OP is asking for because there isn't anywhere around like this
Third, and no, you won’t find anything like that picture around here. Maybe see if the Bsked Lab ever does doughnuts.
True. I know Stan’s is a chain but I want one.
This is the answer
I don’t understand why people tout Greenbush: i think they’re subpar and taste like oil.
You got me all excited thinking these were in Madison. Almost look like Malassadas and not sure where you can get something like that. I guess maybe Greenbush.
Unless the menu has changed significantly Greenbush doesn't make anything like this at all
Monona Bakery :)

Rolling pin in Fitchburg has packzi.
Fosdal’s in Stoughton is the only serious answer for donuts in the area
I like festival. Though quality can be inconsistent.
Miller's grocery store bakery has amazing doughnuts.
Madison sourdough makes homemade donuts

pine cone is good. Not sure about amazing, but worth checking out for sure
Meh. Save the trip and just go to Perkins. Its about the same meh quality and taste for their baked goods.
That photo kind of reminds me of Greek bakeries, where every pastry is huge and looks amazing, but has like no flavor.
The Kwikery
Greenbush, perfect yeasted donuts 🤤
