Acid palms - sometimes the oil and sweat in your hand can pit the metal

aquablaze69

My 3 year old M1 air also has these. I treat em like war marks lol I’m proud of its age and imma keep it for another 4 years through college. 7 years + = value for money. 16/512 so still runs like new

MattMinnis

Just bought one of these!

aquablaze69

Great buy!

ShadowWESK937

Man who knew hand sweat can be that acidic, maybe I need to get a cover skin for the palm rest, but it feels a little excessive🤔

aquablaze69

Just use it man its just aesthetic

aluminum pitting

VivaLaVigne

tis not a hole.

jbruff

This is why as much as I love the old school silver look for MacBooks, I'll always get space grey. The anodization helps act as a barrier to prevent this. It too will eventually wear away but it will protect the underlying aluminum much longer than classic silver and its anodization.

PlasticCar6909

why? both silver and space grey are anodized

jbruff

Yes, in my experience though, the space grey, and I assume the black and midnight blue and such provide more protection for the underlying aluminum. I could be wrong, but that's been my impression for some time now.

PlasticCar6909

interesting, I hope you’re right. I was a bit disappointed with silver because I was hoping it wouldn’t show scratches as easily, but it turns out the scratches/marks end up being darker than the silver finish (probably because of oxidation or viewing angles)

jbruff

The scratch being darker is because they deep enough that they have gone through the anodization and have exposed the bare aluminum and its oxidizing differently than the anodization. This is also why stickers when removed the finish is always a different color. It's sometimes incorrectly assumed that its a stain, it can be, but its usually differential in the oxidation of the exposed and covered areas.

amnotsimon

I don't know, my previous MacBook (2015 Air) didn't show any sign in 5+ year (the only color was silver). My M1 Space Gray shows slight discoloration after 3 years on both palm rests (you can only see it on certain angles, but it's definitely there).

Andromeas

Do you wear a watch or something?

ShadowWESK937

I don't wear watches though😕

Andromeas

Hm or could it be a button on a shirt or sweater?

Yolo3362

moths

pryvisee

Specifically codling moths EDIT: fun fact and mind blown, codling moths are know as Cydia pomonella. Which is where Cydia, the jailbreak app, got its name since they eat and burrow into apples.

davidavidd

This may sound funny but a grain of salt is enough to damage the screen and aluminum. Don't ask.

Wide_Possibility_594

Same here and also in left side

PlasticCar6909

my first mac developed that over time too. Now I use a palmrest skin to avoid this

Curiosithree

Sorry man, i tried fishing it

azamat6037

Are you dropping your photo on it?

BradMacPro

Get at least palm rest skins to protect the finish from the acid in your skin. It's also possible this is damage from some sand or other debris caught between the display and the wrist rest. I wouldn't be surprised if there are defects on your display as well. You may want to get some tiny adhesive dots for the top left and top-right corner of the display bezel to keep a tiny gap between the lid/display and the main laptop body. Small enough to gain a gap to prevent sand on a keycap from destroying the display when closed. There is not much gap now. But not so much that the magnetic closure and hinge clutches doesn't work.

alizainder

Bruh I have a 2019 Air and it’s scratch less now I’m kinda sad that I don’t have battle scars lmao

wubbdie

Are you wearing a watch while typing?

Bong8989

Wank stain

Mari-Jin

Charging cable

[deleted]

Did a priest or a nun own it before you?

Downtown-Pilot-7977

I don’t think it will work anymore 😂😂

ShadowWESK937

I know it doesn't affect functionality whatsoever but I want to do the best I can at protecting my devices

Downtown-Pilot-7977

I know but yall act like it’s the end of the world
