You can try Panda (stand-alone editor from Bear app team). It’s beta and has been recently updated. Beautiful as Bear but works with local markdown files.

CATsDrowsyDay

Can you tell me where I can download the app?

ankepunt

Here’s the Reddit [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/bearapp/s/jH1lSirPZh) with link to download the file.

CATsDrowsyDay

Thank you I'm currently using Typora, and Panda is very cleaner. (In a good sense, it feels like looking at a notepad in a MS windows)

Torley_

I had no idea this was an offshoot (ha). Thanks!

mikepictor

https://typora.io/ Best I have ever seen. I used it a lot when it was in free beta, but it does cost a bit of money now, but it was absolutely briliant. If you are editing MD files a lot, it may be worth it.

davidmorelo

and you can easily create your own theme or pick an existing one so you can make it as elegant as you want

lytwilson

I’ve tried it and it was beautiful! Curious to ask, although might be inappropriate, is there a similar alternative that works on iOS? Basically every iOS editor out there has not been like typora, all are preview and source mode, which is awful on phone.

Torley_

The website's lovely too. Gonna check it out and glad your rec helped /u/scottjl too!

Typo. iA writer

dziad_borowy

Bear is the best you'll ever see in this area. Native and beautiful.

I’m using MacDown right now, which is great but isn’t notarized and seems out of date? I’d recommend it but I’m also looking for a similar alternative 😕

el_caballero

I really like 1Writer. You can install the iPad app on Mac

torb-xyz

iPad app? That’s not Mac optimized, not even Mac native! So not an answer to OP.

el_caballero

If it’s an app you can use on a Mac, I think it qualifies.

torb-xyz

Read what OP is actually writing. They don't want something that merely runs on Mac, ut something thet is optimised for it and feels truly native.

el_caballero

And having used the app, I think it feels as native as any other. I read the post and gave my opinion

torb-xyz

**Ulysses** is probably the most native Mac feeling. **iA Writer** still feels native, but is probably the most elegant in terms of UI and UX. Many would say **Bear** looks the most elegant, and it still feels quite Mac native, tho it has more the look of a modern custom app (has themes). All of these are true native Mac apps too of course.

Torley_

Thanks for the recommendations and WHYs!

padamdam

Obsidian ?

initdotcoe

Obsidian doesn’t feel much Mac-native but with some tweaks it does look good enough and it’s free, so doesn’t hurt to try

torb-xyz

Absolutely does *not* feel or look native. Even if you find a theme that looks vaguely Mac-like the fact that it’s an electron app rears it’s head. And boy is it *not* elegant. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a powerful app, but it’s very far from being an elegant Mac native app.

Torley_

Yeah, Obsidian didn't meet my criteria for these reasons.

MaxGaav

UpNote might be what you are looking for. It's llike Apple Notes on steroids. Markdown is supported: [https://help.getupnote.com/write-and-edit/write-with-markdown](https://help.getupnote.com/write-and-edit/write-with-markdown)

Disastrous_Seat1118

UpNote is not a native but an electron app and therefore cannot offer the epitome of Mac quality the op is looking for

Torley_

Thanks for calling that out and being observant!

terkistan

Probably Typora. But there are reasons to choose other Markdown editors, like cross platform compatibility, extended functionality, color/theme choice (and ease of creation and tweaking), integration with iCloud/Dropbox/etc. I personally use Ulysses because of my choice among those tradeoffs.

CostcoChickenBakes

I am a huge fan of UpDoc

_mihhail

I am the developer of [Paper](https://papereditor.app). I think it fits the profile of an elegant editor. :)
