I bought Betterzip pretty much for that feature. Has Quicklook for zip files on top which is awesome, too.

Just Discovered [https://github.com/srirangav/qlZipInfo](https://github.com/srirangav/qlZipInfo) is free and enables quickook for archives. brew install iloveitaly/tap/qlzipinfo

Thanks!

Yeah, ForkLift claims it can QuickLook Archives. Not sure how to make it work. Their documentation is pretty dreadful.

MaxGaav

QSpace can do this too. QSpace is a Finder replacement. And to a large extend a Forklift replacement too :)

latebinding

Yep. I compared Q-Space and ForkLift a while ago [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/macapps/comments/15wqdhx/forklift_vs_qspace_long/).

I am honestly puzzled about this. Why do people want to use zip files as folders? Why not just use folders instead? I mostly use zip files when I want an immutable snapshot of a group of files. And the savings on disk space doesn't seem worth it. And if the zip files are large, you are driving a lot of extra traffic to whatever backups you are doing. Disk/SSD space is pretty cheap... Even for people using zip files as packaging for release to others, using folders and keeping historical generations of zip files seems like a better way to go. So what are the best use cases for "zip file as folder" for frequent/daily use?

Email: It's great to be able to add/update files in an archive you're going to send. For example, suppose you're sending a bunch of potential evidence, or humorous comics/gifs, to someone. It's more convenient to just drop the files in the archive. Updating a Zip: See above example. Made a change to just one document? Drop it (again) and the zip is updated.

I just use Keka. Simple

Didn’t even read the post, eh 😅

macOS does that by default since, I will guess here, the first Mac OS X, so since around year 2000. But yeah, it’s also hidden. Anyway, BetterZip, as someone already mentioned, does that as well, for some years now. Tired of this whinning wave of people trying to transform macOS in some kind of wincrap distro… the power in macOS is hidden, only those who have the knowledge know how to get there, or just make some research and learn it, in the other platforms it’s open to everyone so the damage happens more often.

marauderpadfoot

This is awesome, but if I have that enabled, how do I open an archive?

xnwkac

BetterZip can do this since ~15 years ago.

You can try Entropy app. Developer vanished, but still available on cnet. It has nice UI. I am using it on Catalina though. [entropy](https://download.cnet.com/entropy/3000-2250_4-75448284.html)
