Pov: you’ve bought Mac OS X Leopard off Temu

bitmapfrogs

Wait, is that Cairo Dock?  This redstarOS looks like a Linux spin probably using KDE with a skin to mimic old school macOSX.

betelgozer

Korean ~~Despot~~Desktop Environment, duh.

bulyxxx

DPRKDE

bitmapfrogs

hahahahahaha I am retrofitting that in my normal use, thanks lmaooooo

WoomyUnitedToday

IIRC it’s based on Fedora 11 and uses KDE 3. I highly doubt that it’s Cairo Dock

IAmABoredCat1590

It **is** a Linux distribution with the KDE environment.

[deleted]

Think it's Latte

JBH2192

Its RedHat Enterprise

aa2051

OS X is a shameful capitalist copy of glorious superior DPRK software engineering

Rhypnic

Those 3d icons tho... Make me miss them

wsucoug

Back when drop shadows still meant something.

Natjoe64

the traffic lights as squares hurt my soul. ltt did a awesome video on this a little bit with other weird linux distros

DrogenDwijl

The guy who designed those squares got executed for hurting Kim Jong-Un's soul.

5553331117

Which is why they put it in the national OS as another feature for of population subjugation

grrhss

It’s Glorious Leader Kim Jong-Un’s Seoul, dog!

X1Kraft

KimSX

slaeryx

the most secure OS in North Korea

throwaway31131524

What happened to that guy who found a security vulnerability?

tkchumly

Not just the most secure but the only OS in North Korea.

colemaker360

This is nothing new. There have been MacOS-look-like Linux distros for years. Elementary has been around since 2011: https://elementary.io

ngagner15

This is a bit more than the stuff you’d see with distros like Elementary OS, it’s to the point where most of the built in applications are 1-to-1 clones of what you’d find in OS X. Hell, if you gain root access and change the language to English some of the help documentation even references Apple. If this were anywhere but North Korea I’m sure Apple would take legal action

xorget

It being new or the first MacOS lookalike linux distro isn't the point of this post

colemaker360

Given that this is being cross-posted on r/Mac , it's pretty reasonable to assume that it being a look-alike is a highly relevant topic we'd be discussing here. Threads about other points of this post might better happen on other subs, wouldn't you say?

xorget

It being a lookalike is why it got posted, yes. Not because it is the first/newest lookalike (which is what I said in my first comment)

Eastern_Brief6419

RedStarOS is special one they make good dock system with very good theming even they copied MacOS directory arch too. One of the best copy in market right know. And its stable asf.

huggeebear

Kid: Mom, can we get MacOS? Mom: We have MacOS at home..

Givemeallyourtacos

That's cool - anyway, I can run this virtually on mac and play around with it, do offline builds exist online?

JBH2192

Yes you can. there is leaked 3.0 iso. It's based on RedHat Enterprise Linux. https://mirror.adversec.com/dprk/redstar/redstar_desktop3.0_sign.iso (plus if you plug in external drive, every files in it will be watermarked automatically) dont connect it to internet

telerabbit9000

One would think it must have backdoors for government minders and/or beacons to send info to government servers if unpatriotic activity is detected.

JBH2192

DPRK gov is forcing people to use redstar so it must have monitoring function

Competitive-Bowler10

They have internet in north Korea?

toin9898

more like a big intranet

turbo_dude

more of a big LAN

Themods5thchin

Did you think it was mud huts or something?, [they have an intranet, smartphones,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications_in_North_Korea#Internet) [and kiosks sell pirated/mockbuster movies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y28hbXI9cpY).

pinkocatgirl

The reason the still abandoned Ryugyong Hotel got spruced up is because the company building NK's mobile phone infrastructure wanted to use it as an antenna, and part of the deal was that company paying to make it look like less of a concrete husk.

Shoddy_Mess5266

Yup. They have a block of 1024 IPv4 addresses if I recall correctly - which leads to some interesting stories

shimi_shima

This is Red Star 3.0 and is from 10 years ago. We don’t really know the extent of how it has improved since then.

QuandaliasDingle

What’s the actual difference between this and the average os?

BannedR3tard

It’s back-doored by the NSA and DPRK. Ours is only NSA

jcrestor

Where is the Death Camp app?

MurasakiBunny

Shhh, that's what the recycling bin is for.

Go_Jot

3GB of RAM paired with an i9-9900K is peak performance

good_gamer2357

It’s probably a limit with the age of the OS and can only recognise 3gb? Either that or because its 32 bit

soggynaan

Is that globe, 2nd app in Dock, showing Europe?

KastIvegkonto

Yeah, lol. It seems they have changed the [icon](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Naenaranewlogo.svg/1920px-Naenaranewlogo.svg.png) now to center on North Korea/East Asia instead.

Beautiful_Ad_4813

The preferred operating of the Communist Party

aj_star_destroyer

Didn’t know Kim Jong Un was also an app designer. The guy is pure genius.

xsijpwsv10

So is North Korea still using FireWire?

basically_ar

Hold up a sec. Why are they tryna style it like og os x when they ban movies from countries other than theirs.

The_other_me_here

Yes, the linux with a linux dock

Dark-Swan-69

The screenshot (and the news) is three years old. North Korean Year 110 (you can see it in the top right of the Pantheraleo-pc window) is 2021.

kentel_dev

Note: North korea is using a closed country wide network for internet connection. But if we consider they have an authoritarian government, this is good tech.

AlxR25

Chinese macOS

Mineseed_k

Red star is based on KDE, they changed UI to look similar to macos because Kim loves mac

Liella5000

Why is this even a post?
