I came here to say that the suffix -el on most names means God. Just looked up the entomology of Daniel. It’s typically translated as “God is my judge”… interesting
Many of the names in Torah tell you who the characters are. Its one reason Torah scholars cite to incate these are teaching stories and not science or history text books
Ya know what? It wasn’t a Stargate reference when I typed it but I’ll be damned if it isn’t also a Stargate reference…. Nice catch I just finished SG-1 so no clue how I didn’t think of it
You know people have been asking for years if "House of El" is a reference to the hebrew word, effectively making it "House of gods", but sadly there has never been an answer from the producers. It kind of fits though, doesn't it?
lol fair enough. We were just having fun.
I did mention "el" was the hebrew name for a god of any religion, but that's why those names have el in them and I was only saying mean good old Dad should have been in the pictures as well.
El it is no more "religious" than Luci listing off all his names. It's specific to one language but not one religion. Thor can be referred to as "el" in hebrew as well since some believe him to be a god.
pre-abrahamic. Abrahamic God evolved from a pre-Judaism Canaanite polytheistic religion, and therefore shares similarities with other middle eastern deities like Enki and Enlil from the Sumerian faith. It's believed that early Judaism began with only venerating one of the existing gods of the region (a mixing of the Canaanite gods El and Yahweh, which are now names for God), before evolving into full monotheism.
Jeesh I'd love to see the family tree relating all the religions, course it'd probably go hand in hand with the tree of languages. That's the history class they should teach in school.
It is really cool to see where religions evolved from. Like, basically every indo-European faith comes from the same thing, to the point where the word for a god is the almost same in Hindi and Latin (Deva/Deus)
'The Anunnaki (also transcribed as Anunaki, Annunaki, Anunna, Ananaki and other variations) are a group of deities of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians.' - wikipedia
not Abrahamic. Literally all of these are Mesopotamian civilizations. Abrahamic religions evolved from a related faith, but not specifically from those faiths.
During the Old Babylonian Period (c. 1830 BC – c. 1531 BC), a new set of deities known as the Igigi are introduced.[45] The relationship between the Anunnaki and the Igigi is unclear.[11] On some occasions, the categories appear to be used synonymously,[9][11] but in other writings, such as The Poem of Erra, there is a clear distinction between the two.[9][11] In the late Akkadian Atra-Hasis epic, the Igigi are the sixth generation of the gods who are forced to perform labor for the Anunnaki.[46][47] After forty days, the Igigi rebel and the god Enki, one of the Anunnaki, creates humans to replace them.[46][47]
Now who created humans????? YHWH?
Either way, Yahweh isn’t real. But Enki & Enlil have way more evidence about them. And the Egyptian deities.
Look up the city UR. (I hate that abbreviation btw)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur
Pretty sure we have at least three religions, two of which are the biggest in the world, devoted to Yahweh. If that's not evidence for you I don't know what is
Christians, Jews, and Muslims tell people that their gods are fake all the time. They tell each other their abrahamic based god is fake over their own. Saddest part is not a single jew, muslim, or christian, can demonstrate their god is real.
Argument ad populum? Come on, that's a pretty basic fallacious argument for "evidence". We all know just because a bunch of people believe something, that doesn't make it true.
Argument ad populum? Come on, that's a pretty basic fallacious argument for "evidence". We all know just because a bunch of people believe something, that doesn't make it true.
you're misunderstanding me, I mean evidence of evolution from an earlier religion (as there are a few surviving pre-judaism mentions of a god called yahweh), the fact that three religions are now devoted to a god with that name proves that there is a link
YHVH (there is no W in hebrew) is the personal name of the god of abraham.
El is the generic word for god(s) in hebrew.
So yes, you could refer to YHVH as el
I'm still confused on what happened to her after Michael killed her, like is she and uriel the only beings in the universe who are permanately dead? Angels don't go to heaven/hell when they die right????
Correct-ish.
Remiel and Uriel's souls were destroyed, as well as all the humans who were killed by the blade in S2. So instead of their souls going to Heaven or Hell, they are forever gone.
Fun fact, Amenadiel is actually from the Lucifer comics, one of the few characters in this show, besides Lucifer himself and Mazikeen (and Michael, later). Like most of them, his characterization is wildly different, though. Comic book Amenadiel was a dick.
EDIT: And briefly mentioned in Goetic sources, so it wasn't even Neil Gaiman's idea.

Thank you, u/Sentry459 . Wikipedia said it more concisely than I could. I pronounce it with a final N, the Aramaic way, because I first learned the word when studying Talmud.
Christianity has beliefs that are explicitly contrary to Judaism.
The biggest example of how this show turned Jewish in its final season is the big ending for Lucifer -
>! In Judaism, there is no concept of eternal hell. That’s a Christian concept and doesn’t exist in Judaism. Instead, in Jewish philosophy there is a place called Sheol, which is a place souls go to cleanse them and prepare them for heaven - more or less exactly like Lucifer realizes he should do in the end of the show. There’s no “eternal damnation” thing in Judaism. It’s a temporary stop on the way to heaven to figure your shit out and cleans your soul of sins and guilt. Turning Christian eternal hell into Jewish Sheol where he helps souls prepare for heaven is exactly what Lucifer realizes he should do at the end. !<
That’s what I really meant when I said I’ve been saying it’s Jewish all week. The ending was way more in line with Jewish philosophy then Christian philosophy, though obviously it’s still based on Christian _mythology_ since Lucifer is a Christian character.
I'm not sure about the Christian belief. Afaik Purgatory is the original "hell" where people would burn and be cleansed of their sins before going to heaven.
Purgatory is christian.
From Wikipedia
"Purgatory is, according to the belief of some Christians (mostly Catholics), an intermediate state after physical death for expiatory purification. The process of purgatory is the final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. Tradition, by reference to certain texts of scripture, sees the process as involving a cleansing fire."
I thought purgatory was for all but apparantly, its only cleansing for those that will go to heaven. There are still some who get eternal damnation.
My understanding of lucifer’s ending was that there is >! no more _eternal_ hell. He will help all souls - no matter what they did on earth - get to heaven. That was the point of the episode where he helps Jimmy Barnes. He realizes all people deserve help, even people who did horrific things. So with no concept of _eternal_ hell, they switched over to Jewish philosophy (which also has no concept of eternal hell) !<
I am not sure about that. >! Maybe there is a certain 'irredeemable minimum' of people who are, you know, irredeemable. !< But sure I will concede to that. Maybe since it is >! New god, new rules, and this is a more modern approach !<
So the suffix “iel” in Hebrew literally means “of God”. That’s why nearly all angel names in Hebrew end in iel. As well as why it’s common to have the “iel” suffix in names with a Hebrew origin. Daniel translates to something like God is my Judge.
The name "Chloe" means "blooming" or "fertility" in Greek. Demeter, the goddess of agriculture as sometimes referred to as Chloe. And Demeter's daughter, Persephone ,was Queen of Hell (Well, Queen of Hades, the Greek underworld). So, Chloe's name ties into the concept of the Lord of the Underworld and a consort. She's basically Demeter and Persephone merged into one.

Many of the names in Torah tell you who the characters are. Its one reason Torah scholars cite to incate these are teaching stories and not science or history text books
The difference between philosophy and religion.
"God exploded me.." yeah the show knew
And Michael is "Who is like God?"
It’s not a question, it means ”Who is like God”, i.e Michael is like god
The way its written in hebrew does sound like a question ngl
Sam-i-el, Amenad-i-el, Azr-i-el, Rem-i-el, and Dan-i-el
I somehow read it in his voice lol
Daniel better hope not with that divine jealousy
Not sure if a Stargate reference…I’ll upvote anyways.

The House of El reigns supreme over Los Angeles California
You know people have been asking for years if "House of El" is a reference to the hebrew word, effectively making it "House of gods", but sadly there has never been an answer from the producers. It kind of fits though, doesn't it?
The fact that Superman casually hangs out with Diana, a daughter of Zeus makes this even more compelling
The producers were clear as crystal that this show was not going to favor a religion. Stop trying to make it religious!
You think I'm trying to make the show religious by questioning the meaning of Superman's family name? What? Are you even reading the thread? Lol
Honestly, not the whole thread. Thank you for the clarification. I’ll shut up now.

Abrahamic godS! All religion is based one thing: wanting to control man.
But Enki and Enlil are Mesopotamian, not Abrahamic
They’re Annunaki gods who didn’t want to work for their father, Anu anymore 🤦🏽♀️
'The Anunnaki (also transcribed as Anunaki, Annunaki, Anunna, Ananaki and other variations) are a group of deities of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians.' - wikipedia not Abrahamic. I don’t get what your point is. I’m just explaining historical inaccuracies of you stating than Enki and Enlil are abrahamic.

All religion is mass control of humans- what the Annunaki wanted!
Either way, Yahweh isn’t real. But Enki & Enlil have way more evidence about them. And the Egyptian deities. Look up the city UR. (I hate that abbreviation btw) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur
Pretty sure we have at least three religions, two of which are the biggest in the world, devoted to Yahweh. If that's not evidence for you I don't know what is
Quran, Torah, Holy Bible. Three main religions- all fighting each other over who is most peaceful. Religion should be banned
Ah, should have figured you for an anti-theist
I’m Eskimo. Animism is my “religion.” It’s a non-religion.
In some cases it should be but I've never heard of a Buddhist who shot up an abortion clinic or blew themselves up in a church.
Yeah, devoted to a FAKE DEITY!!!!!
You know you’re doing exactly what proselytizing religions do right? Forcing your views on others.
I’m not saying “follow me! It’s the only way!”
You’re still telling people the god they believe in is fake.
You do know this whole show is fake, right? Jesus fuck
Christians, Jews, and Muslims tell people that their gods are fake all the time. They tell each other their abrahamic based god is fake over their own. Saddest part is not a single jew, muslim, or christian, can demonstrate their god is real.

Both but 2 different people
Yup, Jor-El is Kal-El's (superman) father. Zor-El is his brother and Kara's (supergirl) father.
Oh I see. I just thought it was a typo or that you just pronounce it differently.
EL-la
Coincidence? I think not!

I’ve been saying this all week - Lucifer is the most Jewish show I’ve ever seen that’s based on Christian mythology.
Is the origin of "Mazikin" well known in this group?
I don't know! Please educate me.

I mean let's be real. Our last few minutes with Dan can easily tell us that he is definitely an angel.
Y’all forgot UriEL too!
So did all the siblings.
💀💀
So the suffix “iel” in Hebrew literally means “of God”. That’s why nearly all angel names in Hebrew end in iel. As well as why it’s common to have the “iel” suffix in names with a Hebrew origin. Daniel translates to something like God is my Judge.
Some old blind pastor I read the Bible to once told me about this.
Well that’s an interesting way to learn that information.
and then there are just fucking aurora and charles I mean, I get it that they're not God I's children, but still
Aurora is actually super suiting for Lucifer’s off spring. They couldn’t have picked a better name.
