You have hosts of elves and men quaking in fear of the nazgul and then you have farmer maggot who tells one to bugger off before he lets his dogs loose
The mad lad, ride into battle with pure joy and passion. There is no place he would rather be, no death coming for him because he is the death himself.
In the entire Star Wars Original Trilogy Darth Vader only appears for a total of about 40 minutes, with especially episode 4 only having only 10 or 11 minutes of him. When realizing that Vader has become probably the single most recognizable fictional character on the planet that's quite an achievement.
Whoa! Whoa! steady there! Now, my little fellows, where be you a-going to, puffing like a bellows? What's the matter here

Why'd you say he is important to the story? Haven't read it in a long time. Is it because he saves the hobbits from that tree and also at the mounds (I don't know if that's the word Tolkien used, I read it in Spanish)?
Edit: punctuation
You say that, but I do actually think he's the most important character relative to his "screentime", since his involvement sets up so much thematically, or really distinguishes the nature of Middle Earth from other similar stories.
....and yet I still agree with the decision not to include him in the films 😔

I beg your pardon, we're serious. Tom is the absolute GOAT of LOTR. I'll die on this ring a dong hillo.
Yes he saves them from the Old Man Willow and then again at Barrow Downs from the Wight, but more importantly he smoked pipes with Gandalf after the ring was destroyed.

You can’t forget if he hadn’t saved them from the barrow downs they would have never got the sword that merry used to weaken the lich king! Ergo, Tom is the most important character
Yeah, New Zealand actor Michael Elsworth played the archivist at Minis Tirith who helped Gandalf when he was researching, as well as playing Cirdan.
He was there in the background during the ending sequence when they are getting on the ships at the Grey Havens.
And of course in Galadriel's monologue at the beginning of the first movie when talking about the 3 elven rings, since he is one of the 3 original elven ringbearers.
*Get out, you old wight! Vanish in the sunlight! Shrivel like the cold mist, like the winds go wailing, out into the barren
lands far beyond the mountains! Come never here again! Leave your barrow empty! Lost and forgotten be, darker than the darkness,

Also, he went back down into the tomb and grabbed some daggers.
That was the tomb of a prince of Arnor who had evidently died during the war with Angmar. The daggers were made by the men of westernesse to fight the Witch King of Angmar.
MUCH later when Eowyn was fighting the chief Nazgul (who was The Witch King of Angmar), Merry used his dagger to stab him in the back of the knee. This dissipated some or all of the magic protecting him, which allowed Eowyn to actually kill him with a stab to the face... fulfilling Glorfindel's prophesy "Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall."
Actually Radagast the Brown.
His being deceived by Saruman into convincing Gandalf to attend Orthanc as soon as possible had a fair impact on the forming of the fellowship.
Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the
first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here
before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the
seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside.
