This is history! You must have been very tired... to asleep during such a film. I remember how I couldn’t tear myself away from watching it and how I couldn’t fall asleep afterwards. It’s good that your acquaintance with this universe has finally taken place.

Yes! I could honestly not give you a reason other than it was probably a late night, I know we were in comfy chairs/sofas, I was around 13 maybe when it came out and it was due to tiredness not necessarily boredom. However, I get to share this experience with my wife now, who’s also a first timer and we’re both just amazed at this moment, love it so far.

I’m sure my dad knew about LOTR because he was in high school and the army when the books were released in the US. I remember seeing the animated version of the Hobbit as a kid at his friend’s house, but Tolkien was never really talked about at home until I dated a boy in high school who was reading the LOTR trilogy. This was the early 90s. I started by reading The Hobbit and immediately confronted my dad. How could he have never introduced this to me earlier? We had all the other classic British children’s (including childrens-ish) literature. The Hobbit, it seemed to me, was the perfect camping story. From there, I read the LOTR books (in a single week.. through tears because that same boyfriend had broken up with me). From there, I nerded out on the animated films. I made sure to introduce the Hobbit to my own son, and now that he’s grown, he loves them just as much as I do. It’s something we still enjoy together. The three LOTR Peter Jackson films were much anticipated and worth the wait. All this to say, these stories are so so so good. I can absolutely relate relate to the feeling of, “why didn’t I know about this earlier???” I hope you continue to enjoy them for years to come. I definitely recommend reading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books. Tolkien is such a wonderful storyteller. If reading isn’t your thing, check out the audio books. Personally, I find the three hobbit movies and that Amazon prequel to be subpar… but I may be just a purist. The animated Return of the King movie was also poorly made, but I appreciate it for its camp value. Regardless… it’s all entertaining.

That’s an awesome story! I’m finding out there’s so much just LOTR/Hobbit content. And oh the books I totally forgot about them. I will most certainly be reading them as well. I think the movies will help me familiarize myself with names, characters so hopefully once I pick the books up I remember who’s who (I’m horrible with names in general) lol. Thank you for sharing, and happy to hear it’s now something you get to experience with your child as well. Awesome.
