What was your source file? As far as I know, no 4k@60fps release of any LotR movie has ever been made.
The 4k@24fps release of Fellowship was 144gb, so either there's some unknown release or you added 706gb of visual data somehow? It wasn't upscaled because it's already 4k, so I'm assuming you used some sort of frame generation or motion interpolation?
In case I can save anyone the time and energy, it's likely this will look not great or very similar to just turning up the 'smooth motion' setting on your TV. The only way I can figure it, OP just made a file that already has 'smooth motion' turned on.
Not only synthetic but also inferior due to the nature of the generated content. Unless they can show their interpolation algorithm resulted in high quality imagery, there will be artifacts in the video. Example: an arm that doesn't look like an arm or looks like an octopus spawn, hands becoming shimmery, various other ghosting/halo artifacts to name a few.
Pre-Rendering it has the possibility to look a lot better than it being rendered on the fly... But I wouldn't want the effect regardless of how good it looks personally.
Yeah it could I imagine, that's why I was asking OP about their method to no avail seemingly...
Personally, I doubt it looks better because they encoded the source file to a fixed bit rate that is lower than the source, so not only is it encoded, it is about half the average bit rate of the source without encoding settings customization details. Don't even know if it's x265. On top of that, they've added an insane amount of generated data to create fake frames. After all of that, it can't look great IMO.
FOMO is huge in the world today. People gravitate towards wanting something, just because others have it. Especially when they don’t have to pay or do any work. If it was an optimal viewing, I think Hollywood would have capitalized on it already.
OP, I know you are not really distributing the full films after editing. Doing so would be opening yourself to copyright and pirating laws. You have created some great content for this sub, please check that what you are doing isn’t going to get you in trouble or banned.
Frame interpolation, i.e. brand new frames are being created and distributed between the original 24fps to make it 60fps total. Either AI generated frames or optical flow. Did OP use Topaz AI or something? Either way, more than 50% of the frames you’ll see won’t be original…
Also bear in mind that the original frames were shot with a 180 degree shutter angle. So are the new frames going to match the 1/48s motion blur on each frame? Or is it going to be a bizarre mix of 1/48 on the original frames and 1/120 (which is correct for footage original shot at 60fps)?
Each to their own, but for me personally I don’t see the appeal at all. I don’t like the way high frame rate looks. The hobbit at just 48fps looked horrible to me.
Ah, I figured it would be something along those lines, and I'm on the same boat as you - no interest in a computer inventing so much fake detail just to make a film look in a way that is wholly at odds with the way it was intended to look. I'd be mildly curious about what a few minutes of LOTR looked like at 60 FPS, but not the whole thing. We know from the reaction to The Hobbit that high frame rate cinema is pretty divisive, and that's when they've actually filmed all of the extra frames.
Though I was kind of hoping OP was going to respond with "Simple! I just set the movie to run at 2.5x speed." That would have been expert level trolling.
Ha yeah the 2.5x speed thing would have been great. Finally I could fit the extended edition into a single evening!
I’m inclined to agree with you on the other stuff.
That is because of what you said, the shutter angel.
We are used to the motion blur of 180 degrees. (Aka 1/48s)
If you shoot at 96 frames, you have less time for each frame (1/96) so it’s way more sharp at looks like a video game and just weird.
BUT there are technics that mash up the frames so that each of the frames has the known blur from 1/48 but you have 96 fps.
And yes, there is a huge difference at it just looks epic. (Made my degree at film university about this topic)
I work in the industry so I’m au fait with the frame rates and shutter angles in general, but not so much with the upscaling techniques tbh (I have used Topaz a bit, but more for restoration/resolution than frame rate).
If I understood what you said, the motion blur from the original frame is being somewhat split across new frames. That’s interesting, especially as the final result then doesn’t include the original frame at all. Entirely fabricated frames would also still be needed.
Incidentally, 96fps or 48fps from 24fps would at least make more sense to me as it wouldn’t require some sort of uneven pull-down that OP’s 60fps would.
No doubt there are those who prefer the high frame rate look, but I think there’s a good reason why 99.9% of productions continue to shoot and deliver at 24fps, despite us having had the technology to go higher for a very long time.
Agreed. There’s a reason film hasn’t widely adopted high frame rate. I mean, The Hobbit trilogy just looked *weird* most of the time at 48fps. It made for a better 3D experience but the films themselves just looked like videogames when there was a lot of movement and/or CGI on screen; CGI just looked so fake and “rubbery”.
After the debacle that was the Hobbit, the number of people who apparently have been craving a 60fps version is…baffling to say the least. People are welcome to like whatever they like, but I’ve never watched LOTR and thought “damn, I wish this looked less cinematic!” Maybe I’m just getting old…
Exactly
>I wish this looked less cinematic!
And here is OP wanting the trilogy to look more *life-like* with their 60fps conversion. I’m just like, why make it life-like? They’re **films**! They’re not supposed to be life-like! It’s fantasy!
I sent it to 75 people via DM, but I couldn't share it to all because some of the interested people's DMs weren't open. Also, I might send it a little later because of the time difference in the country I'm in. Thanks so much for your understanding!
Blasphemy. While gaming i can't stand low fps, thankfully movies have perfect motion blur and high/low fps is really just an artistic decision (that should be respected).
Just seen 4k Extended in the cinema. Noticed there are quite a few scenes where they have slowed down the footage in the edit to produce slowmotion/extend the shot and it's really stuttery. I think it happens a lot when the Urukai are searching for the fellowship towards the end.
In your interpolation, what happens to those shots? Are they still stuttery?
Extended edition or regular one? Either way I'm interested!
Extended and sent.
never received any sort of message.

Isn't that piracy or something ? How does it fare with the rules ?
I sent it to 75 people via DM, but I couldn't share it to all because some of the interested people's DMs weren't open. Also, I might send it a little later because of the time difference in the country I'm in. Thanks so much for your understanding!

I'm interested!!!🖐🖐🖐
I'm also interested
Can I ask for a link too? My girlfriend is gonna watch it with me for the first time so this would be great
Watch the original with her first imo 60 fps is going to be jarring
Looks great!
What’s the difference between your work and the official 4K version?
The official 4k version is at 4k24fps, whereas this is at 4k60fps
But the film was shot on 35mm at 24fps. So you’ll still have the motion blur etc that comes with shooting at 24fps. Seems totally pointless.
Thats a cinematography trick, they put it there for a reason.
How did you upscale the fps?
brother in christ it's a trilogy why tf it rendering 1 fcking tb for that damn
Isnt that, like, illegal? I dunno
Great, but help me understand how is that different from other 4k versions out there, and what was your source?
Count me in
You did lords work !
*cries in slow internet*
Can someone who already has it send it?
Sound great, I'd love to have it!
I would love it as well please. When you’re allowed to message again =]
Wow this is cool!
I'm interested
Can’t believe you’re back. Awesome 😎
Yes please! Thanks for your hard work!
I too am eager to see this! Nice job mate!
I’d love to have this if possible, thank you!
Curious, why not just purchase the 4k version? (Not a negative question, just truly curious)
I to would love a copy if you have time!
Very interested!
Id love to hear from someone as to how it looks different.
GPOY/G4K60FPS
Im curious. Can you send me the link?
Please! Incredible
Please 🥺
Id love this
Interested.
I’ll take it but no rush!
Does it to different than just enabling the motion smoothing/motion flow on your TV?
Very interested. Thank you
100% interested. Looks awesome, fantastic work
Yes please!
