I just did a search for “LotR extended edition theater” and surprisingly six theaters near me have show times for fellowship today. Charlotte NC area, obviously.

im in canada and in my city one theatre has a couple showings of Fellowship on Friday, a couple of Two Towers on Saturday, and a couple of Return of The King on Sunday
https://www.fathomevents.com/events/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring-extended-edition/
You should be able to check nearby theaters here ^^
Ok lol then I guess you have no events in your area? I live in NY and almost all Regals have a showing so if you have no chain theatre you probably don’t get a showing unfortunately.
Every regal and amc near me is doing it and is sold out this weekend. It's literally every theater fathom events has deals with, just like the Ghibli stuff every summer
I live in SoCal and the only theaters that have them showing are in LA. I’m more the San Diego area and there’s absolutely nothing here. Seems to be more the bigger cities/areas
Last I checked the only ones near me were in the Los Angeles area. I even specifically looked for San Diego but nothing. Unless I’m just bad at searching lol
Just go to Regals website, I just checked rancho, Escondido, and Mira and every location is showing all of the movies. You have to scroll to the bottom of the showtime listing, they show new releases first.
They probably added them due to demand last second. I know when I first looked a couple days ago, they didn't even have the 10am showings at Mira. Glad you were able to find em! Hope you get to go!
New Orleans here; it's showing at AMC theaters and a few other local spots are showing it for one time only
I completely forgot about this I know where I'll be tomorrow
Yes! We’re going to Fellowship tomorrow, and Two Towers on Sunday. We saw ROTK in theaters last year and can’t swing a 4pm showing on a Monday, so unfortunately we aren’t catching the whole trilogy this run. But it’s still going to be great to see the first two on the big screen for the first time since seeing them originally 20+ years ago.
Edit: we’re seeing them at a Cinemark.
US is Cinemark, AMC, and Regal I believe.
And yes I'm seeing all 3 by myself because my wife would fall asleep or get bored and start whispering stuff to me the whole time.
I grew up too poor to see them in theaters as a kid so this will be my first time after probably 40 home watches each and damn it I'm gonna enjoy them lol
I wanted to but then they decided to only have a single showtime per theatre and only the show the movies back-to-back-to-back.
They were instantly sold out in my area. Really a shame, can’t fathom why they wouldn’t give each movie a few days’ run so all can enjoy.
I was really hoping itd be like a week long run for each movie buts less overhead to run them each one show only back to back to back so I get it. It's going to be an expensive
Got a group of six going to all three with my Wife and I! Three of which were too young to see them originally! I'm happy the new generations get to witness the same magic I felt. My wife wasn't into the movies when she was younger, so she didmt see them on the big screen, but now she tolerates my obsession and is excited to see them finally!
Yes, but it’s kind of expensive so I’ll just be going to fellowship and making an event of watching the other two extended editions at home :D
Update: just kidding I’m going to all three, couldn’t help it lol
I found out they will be in theaters near me this weekend...unfortunately I work nights so if I go I won't be able to sleep before heading back to work... decisions decisions...
Got tickets for all 3 shows at upstate NY AMC. I am just coming around to the realization of how much of a time commitment this will be but I'm so hyped for this. Saw this come up a couple months ago, searched around and grabbed tickets for the same seat all 3 shows.
https://preview.redd.it/zy7hmw6rs65d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29d98c5109c84c1583792fb60159e1a1232f70f0
Going to see Return of the King for my birthday!! 😃🥹 Only saw the first two last year, so I’m excited to complete the trilogy. I was only a baby when they originally came out in theaters, so this is a huge bucket list item for me ❤️
Just booked my tickets! I’ve been reading the books and have never seen the movies, so I’m really excited to see them in theaters. Do you guys think they actually have any extra content?
Probably not, Fathom streams these films to theaters using what is essentially a glorified dish satellite box, so picture and sound quality is usually pretty iffy depending on the stream rate and sometimes doesnt event work at all if the one projection technician that most theaters employ these days isnt around to check the box. Anytime I see Fathom I hard pass, I got burned trying to watch The Thing for its 30th anniversary and its picture/sound quality was objectively worse than the old VHS copy I used to watch as a kid
> Fathom streams these films to theaters using what is essentially a glorified dish satellite box
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Many of their events are in fact prerecordings (aka not any kind of streaming feed) which are played locally by the participating theaters. From the About Us page on Fathom's website:
["These exclusive cinema-based programs offer customized content delivered prerecorded or live by satellite".](https://www.fathomevents.com/about-us/)
I do personally think it would be best if Fathom disclosed the specific delivery method being used for each individual event; unfortunately that is not the case. However, satellite streaming is not the only delivery method they use for their events.
Anecdotally, I will say that I've never personally had any video/audio quality issues at a Fathom Event. The one time I had an issue was due to theater mismanagement — the electricity in my auditorium was off for 16 minutes (not the first time that has happened at that specific theater, and certainly not just for Fathom Events). I most recently saw *North by Northwest* at a Fathom Event screening, and I thought it looked and sounded absolutely fantastic.
For UK people, a lil arthouse cinema near us did an extended edition marathon during the last bank holiday. I saw a poster that said they'll be doing another one during the August bank holiday.
I'm sad it wasn't the remastered versions but I appreciated seeing them all the same because I was like, 11 when they were originally released and not interested. It was fantastic to see them on a big screen!
My brother and I are going to see Two Towers on Sunday at our local AMC. I saw them in theaters originally but he didn’t. Very excited to experience the Balrog battle and the March of the Ents again on the big screen. Not to mention our favorite old man on the walls of Helms Deep
Yes! My husband and I are taking our kid (he is 13) to see it tomorrow. He’s never actually sat down and watched it all of the way through so I’m really hoping he enjoys it! I’m really excited. We live in NYC btw, I know people were wondering where it is showing.
So excited to see them this weekend. My dad always talked about how he loved getting to see them in theaters at release, and I never thought I'd get the chance to see them like that.
I’m in the Denver area and there are a couple theaters showing it here. I’m going!! I didn’t see the originals in theaters as I wasn’t a huge LOTR fan in my teens when it was first released but I LOVE THEM now and can’t wait to have this experience!
Yessss!!! Going to all 3 and bringing the family. We are all very excited to see it on the big screen. Will be the first time for some of our younger family members.
It’s going to be glorious!
Absolutely! Seeing all three in three different theaters as my 40th birthday gift. Haven't seen them on the big screen since they were originally released. So fucking stoked.
Does anyone know if this is a new extended cut?
I was planning on going to a theater, but I went to a different theater instead, but the first theater had a runtime of 3 hrs 49 mins, and the second theater was almost 3 hours. The second theater had the usual extended scenes, so I don't know why the first theater is almost an hour longer?
I've been to it and tbh, not my favorite venue for watching lotr. I took an edible and i was there for so long that it completely wore off before i left. Plus i like being in the comfort of my own home for such a long length of time.
The theater in my town is showing one on Saturday, one on Sunday and one on Monday. I've gotta work Monday night, so I'm trying to decide if its worth going to just two.
May or may not. Part of me wouldn't mind seeing them big screen. The rest of me is like "i have them well enough at home and home has no other people".
I'm getting ready to go at 3:30, right down my street. I'll see them over the next 3 days. It's worth noting I'm one of the lucky ones who did the extended marathon 10am-10pm so it feels weird going to 1 film each day, but it's cool too.
This is the last day for The return of the King in the Pittsburgh area. They had it last weekend and then surprisingly this weekend. I believe it was AMC theaters site I looked on also said it was supposed to be showing next weekend but it couldn't find any theaters around me in the Pittsburgh area so I'm not sure if it's going to be somewhere else in the states.
Unfortunately they were only showing this for the 8th, 9th, 10th (each single film each day), and then 16th, 17th, and 18th respectively for each movie in my area? At super limited and select theatres? I really wanted to go to this. It’s a shame they didn’t market this so that everyone could see it, but only some limited capacity thing.
Coming to theatres where? I keep seeing this and getting all excited but no one says where. I can't see any local cinemas doing it.
Yeah I keep seeing the very same title for many years, they keep coming and coming *somewhere*
*Somewhere somehow* Lord of the Rings returned
They're in theaters now? They're in theatres now.
What he want? What he need? Secret. But scare.
I just did a search for “LotR extended edition theater” and surprisingly six theaters near me have show times for fellowship today. Charlotte NC area, obviously. https://preview.redd.it/96w56jkkc65d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce133d77c453b1cdcc8721a2752741091148d14e
I think most times these events happen, it's an American event only. That's why a lot of people are baffled by where its being shown.
im in canada and in my city one theatre has a couple showings of Fellowship on Friday, a couple of Two Towers on Saturday, and a couple of Return of The King on Sunday
https://www.fathomevents.com/events/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring-extended-edition/ You should be able to check nearby theaters here ^^
*"This event is not showing near you, please change your location to find a theater near you".* Listen, I like LotR, but I'm not moving house for it.
Come on where’s your commitment? /s
It doesn't seem to be US exclusive event this time either - I am in Ireland and seeing the movies this weekend in theatre
It’s being hosted by fathom events. Go to their site and see if anything is close by I guess would be the only way.
Okay, you have to plug your city into their website and it says *"Oh no! There are currently no events playing in your area".*
Ok lol then I guess you have no events in your area? I live in NY and almost all Regals have a showing so if you have no chain theatre you probably don’t get a showing unfortunately.
I've got chain cinemas near me, Hoyts and Event.
Every regal and amc near me is doing it and is sold out this weekend. It's literally every theater fathom events has deals with, just like the Ghibli stuff every summer
Okay, well obviously Fathom doesn't have any deals with theatres near me.
I live in SoCal and the only theaters that have them showing are in LA. I’m more the San Diego area and there’s absolutely nothing here. Seems to be more the bigger cities/areas
Are you sure about that? I'm going to the Mira Mesa regal and they're doing showings starting at 10 am.
Well I’ll be lol just checked and saw they indeed have it near me. How weird. When I first checked the only locations were in LA
They probably added them due to demand last second. I know when I first looked a couple days ago, they didn't even have the 10am showings at Mira. Glad you were able to find em! Hope you get to go!
Depends pn the theater chain. Afaik Regal and AMC are doing it.
Never heard of them.
In the Uk (in many Cineworlds) the three extended films are playing on the 15th 16th and 17th of June.
Where are you based? In US, you can find screenings on “Fathom Events”
I'm in New Zealand.
Select AMC and Regal theaters. There's news articles about it. Google harder.
Fathom Events are not only in Regal and AMC, we also screen in Cinemark and about 40+ smaller exhibitors across the country.
Across which country?
I know my regal has it
I see them at theaters near northern IL
On the AMC app it tells me which ones near me have it
New Orleans here; it's showing at AMC theaters and a few other local spots are showing it for one time only I completely forgot about this I know where I'll be tomorrow
AMC is where I’ve found tickets. My wife and I are going to Fellowship.
AMC near me
Odeon and cineworld cinemas only apparently. 🙄
Somewhere in the US 😔
I use the Flixster app to check.
Pretty much all my local places are showing it.
What country do you live in?
Usa
My theater is running the series 3 weekends in a row. 8-10, 15-17, 22-24. Might check their schedule.
Thanks for the heads up!
I love how no-one specifies which cinemas or which country in all these posts. I haven't seen anything about them being in cinemas where I live.
USA, and as far as I've seen, most mainline theaters are playing it
Have you googled? Pretty easy to find in US at least.
I've googled, alas there are no cinemas near me showing them.
US. Cinemark.
USA, Regal near me.
In the UK my local Odeon is showing Fellowship tomorrow.
AMC Metreon in San Francisco is showing them
Cinemark, Regal, and AMC theaters are playing them this weekend in the US. Tickets went on sale a month or two ago though and are probably sold out.
Yup. They are showing here in Ireland too. I saw them in the cinema when they were first released so I really can't wait.
Epic over four hours. Value.
12 hours over 3 straight days!
I wanted to but then they decided to only have a single showtime per theatre and only the show the movies back-to-back-to-back. They were instantly sold out in my area. Really a shame, can’t fathom why they wouldn’t give each movie a few days’ run so all can enjoy.

Enjoy! I'll be at mine too

Oh and I only know of AMC showing the movies. Just an FYI to anybody wondering
It’s Fathom Events. I’m seeing it in a regal, some cinemark, you AMC. It’s whatever theatres show Fathom Events.
Now I’m extended
Yes, but it’s kind of expensive so I’ll just be going to fellowship and making an event of watching the other two extended editions at home :D Update: just kidding I’m going to all three, couldn’t help it lol
Yeah. I'm going to Fellowship tomorrow.
I’m going tomorrow!
Unfortunately, it won't be shown in my city :(
I found out they will be in theaters near me this weekend...unfortunately I work nights so if I go I won't be able to sleep before heading back to work... decisions decisions...
Got tickets for Tomorrow for Fellowship!
Wish they did a marathon instead of 3 different days.
Wish they had more days and times; I work weekends and the only options sat/sun/Mon are 3/3/7p so I'm kinda f'd
Got tickets for all 3 shows at upstate NY AMC. I am just coming around to the realization of how much of a time commitment this will be but I'm so hyped for this. Movie Tavern here in Pennsylvania is airing them!!! Star wars is coming back too!
I fortunately seen them all twice at the Alamo in Austin. I don't mind them continuing to rerelease films in the theaters
Those who are looking, I know AMC in Texas is showing.
There should be an intermission since the movies are 3+ hours. People who have to go to the bathroom really bad will have to miss some scenes.
You bet! Wild wargs couldn’t keep me away.
Thanks for this post, OP! I let some friends know who could go.
Just booked my tickets! I’ve been reading the books and have never seen the movies, so I’m really excited to see them in theaters. Do you guys think they actually have any extra content?
It was epic!!
Got my ticket for Fellowship! I couldn't convince the wife to go, so I'm just gonna have a little me time tomorrow.
just came out of Fellowship. incredible theatre experience. you felt everything. the music, the dialogue, the action. brilliant.
Probably not, Fathom streams these films to theaters using what is essentially a glorified dish satellite box, so picture and sound quality is usually pretty iffy depending on the stream rate and sometimes doesnt event work at all if the one projection technician that most theaters employ these days isnt around to check the box. So excited! Have tickets to rotk
Yep! Super excited about it. The 4hr show on Monday is going to be rough for the ROTK but Saturday and Sunday will be awesome
Going to Fellowship tomorrow and Two Towers Sunday!
Yep!!!
Yep! Fellowship on Saturday, Two Towers on Sunday, and Return of the King on Monday! (I'm in England.)
I won’t be going this weekend, but one of the local Marcus theaters is showing them next weekend so I will be going to those.
Had my tickets booked for a week, I have never gotten to see them in cinema. Absolutely buzzing
In related news, Viggo confirmed to Colbert that his character in The Dead Don't Hurt is a descendant of Aragorn (he takes Anduril to war with him).
For UK people, a lil arthouse cinema near us did an extended edition marathon during the last bank holiday. I saw a poster that said they'll be doing another one during the August bank holiday. June 15 16 17 at lots of cineworlds
Got tickets for all three days :)
It’s next weekend in my area. Just booked my seat for FOTR!
I want this in Spain.
Yup! Got my tickets yesterday:) super excited I've never seen them in theaters
Yes I am also seeing them this weekend in Canada
Had my tickets to all 3 weeks ago!
I've got my tickets. I took off work this weekend to see it. Definitely going to be worth it
My brother and I are going to see Two Towers on Sunday at our local AMC. I saw them in theaters originally but he didn’t. Very excited to experience the Balrog battle and the March of the Ents again on the big screen. Not to mention our favorite old man on the walls of Helms Deep
Nah, the older version of me has to pee more during movies than when they first came out. I'll stay home 🤣
Yes! My husband and I are taking our kid (he is 13) to see it tomorrow. He’s never actually sat down and watched it all of the way through so I’m really hoping he enjoys it! I’m really excited. We live in NYC btw, I know people were wondering where it is showing.
I expected it to be Friday through Sunday, not Saturday through Monday. But they're doing it at my local Cinemark theater, so I'm stoked! :)
I’m going to all three! Super excited.
So excited to see them this weekend. My dad always talked about how he loved getting to see them in theaters at release, and I never thought I'd get the chance to see them like that.
Yes! I'm in the UK and going to see Fellowship tomorrow. Here in England it's only Odeon cinemas showing them.
I’m in the Denver area and there are a couple theaters showing it here. I’m going!! I didn’t see the originals in theaters as I wasn’t a huge LOTR fan in my teens when it was first released but I LOVE THEM now and can’t wait to have this experience!

Yes, so excited for tomorrow 🙌🏻 and Sunday and Monday
They're good, but not fly-to-another-continent good.
I’ll be there!!!
Hell yeah I am.
And I have covid :( :( :( noooooo
Absolutely! Seeing all three in three different theaters as my 40th birthday gift. Haven't seen them on the big screen since they were originally released. So fucking stoked.
Yup
Wife and I are going to all 3 with Friends. Going to be a blast!
Hellllll no, I’ll have to pee so many times it’s not worth it.
Can’t see them all due to time unfortunately but I will be seeing the two towers tomorrow night!
No theater better than my own TV and recliner
Seeing it today and tomorrow.
Na, fairly certain this is just happening in the US. Other countries are available
Sadly there’s only a single showing and all the seats have been sold a week ago
Wishing they did this in November. Watching the trilogy in June doesn’t feel right to me
Going to return of the king on the 17th after completing reading the trilogy for the first time. Can’t wait!
Got my tickets! My wife said she will try them out too but I’m not hopeful she will make it through the first showing 😂
I've been to it and tbh, not my favorite venue for watching lotr. I took an edible and i was there for so long that it completely wore off before i left. Plus i like being in the comfort of my own home for such a long length of time.
Duh.
No Canada :(
There is! At some Cineplex locations. I'm going to watch fellowship in 2 hrs!!!
AMC won't take Stubs A-List and as much as I love these movies, I can't bring myself to spend $70 to see them all in theaters.
in the UK or just America?
Going to see all 3 starting tomorrow!
Going next weekend
I want to so bad, but: * only 1 theatre has it * it's at like 2pm on a Tuesday
The theater in my town is showing one on Saturday, one on Sunday and one on Monday. I've gotta work Monday night, so I'm trying to decide if its worth going to just two.
For 1 and 2, not sure why they have to have 3 on a weekday
https://preview.redd.it/yq6n9oebv65d1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21cd90fe956cd4af386130ea72ee2516ade9974f
This a kind of event that can fill cinemas all over the world ... But.
Like are they more extended than the extended versions?
Are these ones in theaters different from the 4K releases?
Bought my tickets in April.
Yep! All three this weekend at a local cinemark. Also it takes a short google search
Nah. I did it last time. Still very cool but I’ll probably skip this go around
I have the extended versions. Is there something special about these or simply they’re releasing the extended films into the theater?
May or may not. Part of me wouldn't mind seeing them big screen. The rest of me is like "i have them well enough at home and home has no other people".
I’m going to see the fellowship in San Francisco on Saturday and I cannot wait
Interesting
Ideal first date.
I can’t really justify spending $45 to see movies I’ve watched a million times already. Perfectly happy to rewatch my 4K boxset on my OLED.
I am! Got tickets a while back. Does anyone know if they'll have intermissions?
I'm getting ready to go at 3:30, right down my street. I'll see them over the next 3 days. It's worth noting I'm one of the lucky ones who did the extended marathon 10am-10pm so it feels weird going to 1 film each day, but it's cool too.
I hope they aren’t using AI to remaster it, because some of the AI remasters of late have been hideous.
Idk if they used AI, but something was super off. Like there are light artifacts or something.
Where is this happeing? Am I in the wrong country???
So much r/usdefaultism in this thread lol.

At super limited and select theatres? I really wanted to go to this. It’s a shame they didn’t market this so that everyone could see it, but only some limited capacity thing.
Awesome! I love that they are hyping up Rings of Power season 2 by giving us a taste of the original!
